For the Chronicle
The Hu, a Mongolian band that will return to The Elm in Bozeman on Sunday, share the stories of their people through seemingly unusual means — metal music. Band member Nyamjantsan “Jaya” Galsanjamts, however, argues that traditional Mongolian music was already metal, both in the sounds generated by the instruments and in the epic subject matter. “It translates very easily into modern metal,” Jaya said through a translator over Zoom from a hotel in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in September. Jaya and bandmates have simply brought the warrior mentality common in traditional Mongolian music to the modern age, electrifying instruments such as the morin khuur — known in the English-speaking world as the horsehead fiddle — and using layered throat singing to create driving rhythms and melodic chants. If you translate what they are singing into English, you would read epics, fables and sagas of ancient Hunnu warriors, Jaya explained. Stories
are passed from generation to generation, unifying people and lands — wide countryside and ancient mountains much like Montana. “We’re singing about our ancient histories, our ancestors,” he said. The band’s core includes Galbadrakh “Gala” Tsendbaatar, the lead throat singer who also plays an electrified version of the morin khuur. Enkhsaikhan “Enkush” Batjargal takes the lead on the morin khurr and adds to the chorus of throat singing. Temuulen “Temka” Naranbaatar plays an electric tovshuur, a three-stringed lute. Jaya adds throat singing as well as the tsuur, a wooden pipeshaped wind instrument he carries in a holster on his hip. He also plays the jaw harp and flute at times. Keeping traditional instruments gives these stories a “unique power,” Jaya explained. They help the band create a sense of place and ground the music in the culture. There’s a deep connection between Mongolian people and the horse, and every instrument can create the sound of galloping.

“Movie: Life Upside Down” (Oct. 21)
Three couples who know one another are stuck at home during the beginning of lockdown. Jonathan (Bob Odenkirk), Clarissa (Radha Mitchell) and Paul (Danny Huston) will see their lives turned upside-down, forced to look at each other and ultimately at themselves.
Carla Gugino didn’t necessarily set out to be a horror star, but thanks largely to the work she has done with Netflix, she’s built a reputation for herself in the genre. She has teamed again with filmmaker Mike Flanagan on Netflix’s new, currently streaming version of the Edgar Allan Poe tale “The Fall of the House of Usher.” The limited series updates the story to make Usher siblings (played by Bruce Greenwood and Mary McDonnell) the controllers of a prominent pharmaceutical firm, though their business doesn’t prevent others in their family from dying under mysterious circumstances, thanks to someone who returns from the past … with Gugino’s character Verna having a major role in what happens Gugino previously worked with Flanagan on three Netflix projects in the horror vein: “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and “Midnight Mass.” She’s clearly a vital part of the acting company that Flanagan has built through his work, not unlike producer Ryan Murphy’s casting pattern through such ventures as “American Horror Story” and “American Crime Story.” However, Gugino entered the supernatural genre even before her association with Flanagan began. Among the other series she has done was “Threshold,” a short-lived 2005 sci-fi drama that CBS pulled with several episodes left to air. The actress plays the central part as crisis-management expert who prepared advance scenarios on how to handle various emergencies if they became real, one such situation being contact with aliens. (Of course, that happened in “Threshold,” thus the reason for the show existing.) However, more down-to-earth roles have been Gugino’s calling cards more frequently – a notable one being “Karen Sisco,” a 2003 ABC series detailing more adventures of the federal deputy marshal

“Gone Girl” made a bold move from page to screen It’s hard to think of many movies of the past decade that have had more expectations to work against than “Gone Girl.” At the time of its publication, former entertainment journalist Gillian Flynn’s best seller was read by just about anybody who wanted to stay current with pop culture ... and once you know its twists and turns, telling the story in another medium and still keeping it surprising and thrilling is one enormous task. Leave it to David Fincher to prove himself the man for the job. The “Social Network” and “Fight Club” director made a 2014 movie of the book that’s almost completely compelling, the problem being a home stretch in which the picture (adapted by Flynn herself) Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike breaks some of its own rules. By and large, though, “Gone Girl” – which Cinemax in “Gone Girl” shows Monday, Oct. 16, and Friday, Oct. 20 – does its genre proud. Casting rarely gets more ideal than Ben Affleck as relatively callow bar owner Nick, whose wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) vanishes on their fifth wedding anniversary. A struggle appears to have taken place, and not surprisingly, Nick soon becomes a suspect in the disappearance. What happened is recounted in a flashback-heavy nature, fueled largely by Amy’s diaries, painting both herself and Nick in ways expected and not. The resulting scenes play to the strengths of Affleck’s persona, and even if his largest praise has come from his directing lately, “Gone Girl” is a reminder of just how good an actor he can be with the right material. It’s also a revelation where Pike is concerned. Having long offered reliable support to male stars, dating back to the James Bond caper “Die Another Day,” the British actress truly came into her own as the presumed victim who has been labeled by her parents (David Clennon and the late Lisa Banes) as “Amazing Amy.”

Simon Cowell OF AMERICA’S GOT TALENT ON NBC Q: Was Simon Cowell one of the original judges on “America’s Got Talent”? A: No, but he still played a major part in the NBC series from the start, since he created it. (He also has been an executive producer of the show from the beginning.) Piers Morgan, Brandy Norwood and David Hasselhoff made up the judging panel for the first season in 2006, with Regis Philbin as the host. At the time, Cowell was intending to make a similar contest for British television, but some complications ultimately held that up and he turned his attention to making a U.S. version. The result was a summer hit for NBC, and it also jump-started the originally planned British edition, which premiered in 2007 and also continues. From there, the concept expanded even more, with versions still being done in Canada, Cambodia, France, India and Spain (among other locations). A judge on the British version from the start, Cowell became an on-air “America’s Got Talent” presence beginning with the 11th season – this year has marked its 18th round – but he wasn’t present for the live episodes during Season 15, due to a back injury. Substitute judges were enlisted initially, but the number of judges then was reduced from four to three in Cowell’s absence, with Howie Mandel (who has been with the show since Season 5), Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara holding forth with those duties. Actually, Klum also missed some of Season 15 due to illness, with Vergara’s fellow “Modern Family” alum Eric Stonestreet filling in for her.

Viewers still can love ‘Lucy’ every weekday
BY JAY BOBBIN
One of the most popular sitcoms in television history dates back to the early years of the medium, and it basically hasn’t been off the air since then. “I Love Lucy” is now shown weekdays by Catchy Comedy, and no matter how many times one has seen the antics of Lucille Ball’s Lucy Ricardo – wife of bandleader Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz, also Ball’s real-life husband at the time) – they remain greatly amusing. William Frawley and Vivian Vance, who reportedly did not get along when the cameras were off them, also were essential to the show as married neighbors Fred and Ethel Mertz. So many episodes of the series are classics in their own right, if you asked five people which one was their favorite, you’d likely get five different answers. In any event, the world continues to love “Lucy.”

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Martin Odegaard and Gunners look to kick off London derby with a bang The 2023-24 Premier League season continues as the London derby kicks off at Stamford Bridge this weekend. Chelsea hosts Arsenal, Saturday, Oct. 21, with all Premier League action broadcast live on NBC. After a breakthrough season last year that saw the Gunners win their first 16 games — marking their best start to a campaign, including returning to the Champions League after a six-year absence — Arsenal has looked similarly strong to start the 202324 campaign. In fact, they’re already sitting with double digits in points and getting contributions from players collectively. With Arsenal fielding the second-youngest team last season, a significant boost to its squad has been in the midfield position, with newly appointed captain Martin Odegaard a large reason for its newfound success. Since his arrival to the squad from Real Madrid, the immediate impact the Norwegian has displayed can’t be understated. His vision in the midfield has sparked the offence at the right times, providing timely assists for Bukoyo Saka and Leonardo Trossard spreading out the offence and providing the Gunners with a more balanced attacking game. His ability to control the tempo and provide timely balls proves why Arsenal has him as part of its long-term plans, recently signing him to a five-year contract, making him the clubs highest paid player. While Arsenal have been trending upward, the same can’t be said about Chelsea. This season has been nothing short of disappointing as the Blue Devils currently sit in the lower half of the standings, following a season that saw record financial spending. Adding to an already difficult season, coach Mauricio Pochettino has had a difficult time fielding a full-starting 11 squad at any point this season, with injuries to several first-team players, including star captain Reece James. Hoping to continue what has been a great start to the campaign, look for Arsenal and Odegaard to make their mark early, aiming to add another strong and decisive victory into their win column. Catch the Premier League action live on NBC Saturday, Oct. 21, at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea takes on Arsenal in their first regular season matchup.
