Moonshadow finds femininity, power through dance RACHEL HERGETT For the Chronicle

When dancing, Austine Moonshadow embodies empowered female archetypes of history or lore. She’s an independent and often mysterious woman, a femme fatale, a rebel, or someone filled with dark, feminine wisdom — women

like Mae West, Joan of Arc, Mata Hari, Marie Laveau or Anne Bonney. “I like to pay homage to women who were bucking societal expectations of them at the time and received both renown and infamy because of that,” Moonshadow said over coffee at Treeline in Bozeman last week. Through dance, Moonshadow rediscovered her own femininity, a trait often stifled

in small town Montana. Red Lodge’s version of cool, she said, wasn’t about sporting the latest makeup look or stylish clothes: It was about who had the most functional Carhartt jacket. Embracing her feminine side has given her an inner strength. “I love gender expression of all types,” Moonshadow said. “But I really think it’s really important to show that there’s more than one type of strength. There’s more than one different type of

courage. There’s more than one different type of wisdom.” Moonshadow has been studying belly dance for over a decade, taking on a contemporary style with few rules. This allows for evolution as she encounters different types of dance and interacts with those who add to her skillset. She teaches classes in Bozeman (including an 8-week fundamentals course starting in January), performs for various events and has a collective in the works with three other local

belly dance instructors. While classes used to be taught through Moonshadow Belly Dance, Moonshadow’s stylistic diversification has led to some simplification in branding. Moonshadow has become both an adopted surname and business name. Most people now learn of her upcoming classes and workshops via Instagram, @austine_moonshadow. In a world where dancers often put in long hours with little to no monetary compensation, Moonshadow said, working with dancers who have the same passion and dedication is always the aim. And morale among that group is everything. More DANCE I 14

Checking in with

VANNA WHITE

Born as an 18th-century lord, Louis (Brad Pitt) is now a bicentennial vampire, telling “50 First Dates” (Available Now) his story to an eager biographer. Suicidal after Playboy veterinarian Henry (Adam Sandler) the death of his family, he meets Lestat (Tom sets his heart on romancing Lucy (Drew Bar- Cruise), a vampire who persuades him to rymore), but she has short-term memory loss; choose immortality over death and become she can’t remember anything that happened his companion. Eventually, gentle Louis the day before. So every morning, Henry has resolves to leave his violent maker, but Lestat to woo her again. Her friends and family are guilts him into staying by turning a young very protective, and Henry must convince girl. Antonio Banderas, Kirsten Dunst and them that he’s in it for love. Christian Slater also star.

With “Wheel of Fortune” poised to move into a new era, Vanna White will remain a constant of it, at least for a while. Though host Pat Sajak is leaving after the syndicated, Merv Griffin-created weekday game show’s current 41st season, television’s iconic “letter-spinner” recently signed a deal that will keep her on the program for two more years once Ryan Seacrest assumes Sajak’s former spot. White rarely has been absent from “Wheel “ since she joined it in 1982 (though she was absent for a week of shows that aired earlier this month), and she’s also prominent on the “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” edition Wednesdays on ABC, so there had to be interest in keeping her there for consistency .. with a pay hike reportedly a part of her new deal. Having a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a Guinness Record as the most frequent clapper in television history – indicating her enthusiastic cheerleading for contestants – White knows firsthand what it’s like to be a game player. Before she began her “Wheel” tenure, she made it to Contestants’ Row on “The Price Is Right,” though she didn’t make it to the stage with host Bob Barker. Previously a model and a Miss Georgia USA contender, White actually was one of three hostesses who initially worked with Sajak after Susan Stafford left “Wheel.” It only took a couple of months for that position to go solely to her, and though she customarily has held that job, she got a temporary promotion to host when Sajak needed emergency surgery toward the end of 2019. She also hosted

the show for a week in early 2020, assisted then by Sajak’s daughter Maggie. Whether “Wheel” watchers will have to brace themselves for White’s departure as well won’t be known for a while, so in the meantime, they can continue to enjoy her spirited cooperation as players buy vowels and consonants in the pursuit of puzzle-solving. “Jurassic Park” still brings the thrills celebrityq&a Though the week of Halloween is a good time for anything that generates scares, “Jurassic Park” is an all-purpose, year-round thrill ride. As it nears the end of its 30th-anniversary year, the Steven Spielberg-directed blockbuster is streaming on Peacock, along with several of its sequels. It remains just as exciting as it was when audiences first sampled it three decades ago, with Michael Crichton’s best seller about cloned creatures Ariana Richards, Sam Neill and from the prehistoric age providing an ideal Joseph Mazzello in “Jurassic Park” basis for Spielberg and company to pour on the visual and emotional excitement. It’s interesting to note that Spielberg also was working on “Schindler’s List” at the time he was filming “Jurassic Park,” and the clear diversity and ultimate triumphs of those two projects stand as testimony to his celebrated skill and breadth as a filmmaker. The method he uses in “Jurassic Park” to warm viewers up for the eventual appearance of the dinosaurs recalls his slow and steady pace in bringing the shark into view in the smash that really put him on Hollywood’s map, “Jaws.” Richard Attenborough plays a businessman who wants the island where the “Jurassic” creatures roam certified safe, following a fatal mishap, so he summons three scientists (Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum) to the site to assess it. One of the greatest looks of wonder in screen history can be found on Dern’s face, followed by Neill’s, as their characters get their first sightings of beings long considered extinct – with John Williams’ majestic music adding extra punch to the moment. Two youngsters also are in the scenario, with Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards as attenborough’s grandchildren, who find themselves uncomfortably in the thick of the action as larceny by some of the island employees helps set the stage for the mayhem that comes. The plotting helps make “Jurassic Park” more than just a special-effects show, though those effects surely are worth the price of admission on their own.

Kirstie Alley OF CHEERS ON NBC Q: I recently saw a repeat of “Cheers” that had Kirstie Alley in it. How long was she on that show? A: The late actress joined the NBC sitcom, set in the Boston bar “where everybody knows your name,” in 1992 at the start of the sixth of its 11 seasons. Her character, Rebecca Howe, became the site’s manager and effectively assumed the former spot of Diane Chambers (played by Shelley Long) as a romantic interest and verbal sparring partner for bartender Sam Maloine (Ted Danson). Alley already had done a considerable amount of television work by the time she began her “Cheers” tenure, including her stints as a non-celebrity contestant on “Match Game” and “Password Plus.” Her first major acting role was TV-based, as Lt. Saavik in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” (1982), though that was a theatrical film. She had a brief mid-1980s run in the ABC espionage series “Masquerade,” then gained attention in the ABC miniseries “North and South” and played iconic feminist Gloria Steinem in the ABC movie “A Bunny’s Tale.” “Cheers” came next for Alley, and most of her extracurricular work during her run on that series leaned toward feature films. She used her hiatus periods from the show to make such movies as “Shoot to Kill” (1988), “Loverboy” (1989), “Sibling Rivalry” (1990) and the three “Look Who’s Talking” comedies (1989, 1990, 1993). Alley would make several other series, including “Veronica’s Closet” and “Kirstie” (though her character in the latter was named Maddie), later.

“The Buccaneers” - Season 1 (Apple TV+ — Nov. 8, Series Premiere) Inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel of the same name, this series follows a group of fun-loving young American girls as they explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. Sent to secure husbands and titles, the buccaneers’ hearts are set on much more than that, and saying “I do” is just the beginning.

“Halloween” is here again

BY JAY BOBBIN

Though it’s a potent chiller anytime, there clearly isn’t better scheduling for director and co-writer John Carpenter’s original 1978 thriller “Halloween” than the week of trick-or-treating itself. AMC gives the scare show a real workout by showing it Sunday, Oct. 29, Monday, Oct. 30, and Tuesday, Oct. 31 – along with several of the sequels, which were guaranteed when the first movie became one of the most profitable independent films of all time. Recent Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis secured her “scream queen” label as Laurie Strode, the babysitter who ends up in a battle for survival against Michael Myers (played mainly by Nick Castle), a sanitarium escapee who targets various people in an Illinois town. Donald Pleasence also stars as the masked and highly lethal Michael’s psychiatrist, who does what he can to recapture the killer. Carpenter also composed the memorably minimalist music score.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF McDavid, Oilers faceoff against Flames in first matchup in a Battle of Alberta Heritage Classic In what is sure to be one of the most anticipated games of the regular season, the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Calgary Flames as the Battle of Alberta gets underway on Sunday, Oct. 29, at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, with the game airing live on TNT. It’s been 20 years since the NHL and the Edmonton Oilers hosted the first-ever regular season outdoor classic game at Commonwealth Stadium in 2003 — a game that saw the Oilers defeat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in front of 57,167 fans. This season, the stage couldn’t be better to kick off the Battle of Alberta’s first regular season matchup between the Oilers and Flames, as both teams head into the year with high expectations — which include nothing short of a deep playoff run. While the Flames and Oilers have a long season in front of them before thinking playoffs, setting the tone early with a win against a provincial rival is surely something both teams will look to capitalize on out the gate. For captain Connor McDavid and the Oilers, they’ll be looking to continue exactly where they left off last season, with McDavid setting new career highs, finishing first in the NHL scoring race with 153 points (64 goals, 89 assists), and linemate Leon Draisaitl coming in second, finishing with 128 points (52 goals, 76 assists). Despite an early playoff exit to the eventual Stanley Cup champions, the Vegas Golden Knights, in the Western Conference second round, the Oilers have a lot to look forward to this season with McDavid playing in his prime and well positioned to reach even higher numbers — assuming he remains healthy. With the Oilers and Flames in the conversation as some of the top teams going into the season, the Heritage Classic promises to be a thrilling first regular season matchup. The puck drops on the Battle of Alberta at Commonwealth Stadium, Sunday, Oct. 29, with the game broadcast live on TNT.
