‘Something to laugh at’ RACHEL HERGETT For the Chronicle
Playwright Noël Coward seemed to want his audiences to know what they are in for when titling “Blithe Spirit,” as the story introduces some generally playful ghosts. “Noel Coward wrote this play in 1941 in order to give the world something to laugh at when the world was falling apart,” said Debbie Jamieson, who is directing a production of the play for
Open Door Theatre this month. “It’s very timely, because the world is always falling apart.” Open Door Theatre presents “Blithe Spirit” on Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 3-4 and 10-11, at 7 p.m., with Sunday matinees on Nov. 5 and 12 at 3 p.m. Performances are at the Martin-Campeau House, 419 S. Grand Ave. in Bozeman. In “Blithe Spirit,” novelist Charles Condomine (John Larkin) hosts a dinner and
after-dinner séance at his country home with the help of medium Madame Arcati (Peggy Jensen), hoping to use some of the medium’s manner in an upcoming book. Though Arcati’s ineptitude seems to be well known, a spirit is indeed conjured at the séance — that of Charles’ ex-wife Elvira (Reilly Scott). Charles can see and hear Elvira, but his current wife, Ruth (Heather Sackett), cannot. And Ruth is not so appreciative of the new
houseguest. “You see the evolution of the characters,” Jamieson said. “Charles starts out thinking ‘this is a joke,’ making the séance and all this. He just wants to get some material for his next book. Pretty soon it’s not a joke any more and he has to come to terms with how he treated his first wife and how he’s treating his second wife and how he is going to change that. More SPIRIT I 14

stories from the world of professional wrestling. From the life and careers of figures like Abdullah the Butcher, Marty Jannetty and Tammy Lynn Sytch to infamous events such as WCW Bash at the Beach 2000, Season 4 tries its best to find the truth in this wacky intersection of fact and fiction.
For Tim Allen, “The Santa Clause” is a gift that keeps on giving. Though he’s had long-running television sitcoms with “Home Improvement” and “Last Man Standing,” the actor-comedian has had mixed fortunes in the movie realm. One of his most successful films was the 1994 Disney comedy about an everyday man pressed into service as the new Father Christmas, with Allen reprising the role in 2002 and 2006 theatrical sequels. He’s playing it again in “The Santa Clauses,” a Disney+ series that had its premiere last holiday season and returns for a second round with the first two new episodes Wednesday, Nov. 8. The show’s return finds Scott Calvin (Allen), who has been performing the tasks of Santa since being transformed into the beloved yuletide figure, still considering retirement and seeking a successor to accomplish Christmas Eve gift deliveries. Elizabeth Mitchell, Austin Kane, Elizabeth Allen-Dick (Allen’s daughter) and Laura San Giacomo also return in their roles, with Eric Stonestreet (“Modern Family”) and Gabriel Iglesias among those joining the show for its sophomore season. While he has made such other movies as “Galaxy Quest” and “Joe Somebody,” Allen has scored many of his top big-screen victories via Disney. The Toy Story franchise surely stands as testament to that, with his voicing of Buzz Lightyear helping to fuel four massively profitable feature films as well as related short subjects and television specials. “Jungle 2 Jungle” and a remake of “The Shaggy Dog” are among other projects that have served both Allen and the Disney studio well. Whether “The Santa Clauses” will keep the humor and magic going for a third season remains to be seen, but at least for now, Disney+ is

Denzel Washington puts his own spin on “The Equalizer” Especially if you’re familiar with the 1980s television series “The Equalizer,” you know Denzel Washington is a far cry from Edward Woodward. That late British actor gained some of his biggest fame as a former spy turned troubleshooter-for-hire by using his skills to help people “equalize” their problems. Washington inherits that role, reconfigured considerably for him, in the first movie version of “The Equalizer” ... reuniting him with Antoine Fuqua, the director who steered him to a best-actor Oscar in “Training Denzel Washington Day.” Starz Encore shows the 2014 “Equalizer” Thursday, Nov. 9. Where the original TV “Equalizer” (Queen Latifah stars in CBS’ current reboot) dealt in subtlety and nuance, that’s not so much the case with the big-screen versions, the pattern having been set very successfully in the initial film. In fact, by having Washington’s McCall work in a big-box hardware store, many impromptu weapons are at his disposal. It’s a pretty good bet you’ll never look at a corkscrew in quite the same way after seeing this movie. The Boston-based McCall actually would be happy not to go back to the tricks of his old trade, but he simply can’t ignore the assault of a young prostitute (Chloe Grace Moretz) whom he knows. The Russian underworld is involved in the attack – so when it becomes clear he’ll be dealing with some tough customers, McCall finds a new use for power saws, among other items. Is “The Equalizer” grim going? You bet, especially with the visually downbeat motif that Fuqua uses. With its theme of brutal payback, could this have been a vehicle for Liam Neeson rather than for Washington? You bet, again. The basic structure of the TV series provides a convenient framework on which to hang a middle-aged-ex-spy scenario, and the success of many of Neeson’s films have verified that moviegoers will go with it. The ace in “The Equalizer,” of course, is Washington. His often understated but plainly evident charisma is at work again here (as if it couldn’t be), and he’s always smart enough not to overplay, Though he never had done a sequel before, Washington reprised the McCall role in two “Equalizer” follow-ups, “The Equalizer 3” having been in theaters very recently (and about to be released on physical home media), FRIDAYTHURSDAY, NOVEMBER 39, 2023

Jesse L. Martin OF THE IRRATIONAL ON NBC Q: I’m glad to see Jesse L. Martin back as a series star in “The Irrational.” I know he also was in “Law & Order” and “The Flash,” but has he done any other shows? A: Yes. After appearing on the ABC daytime serial “One Life to Live” early in his career, Martin landed a starring role in the short-lived “413 Hope St.,” a seriocomic Fox show about a crisis center. He stayed with Fox for a recurring part on “Ally McBeal” during its first two seasons, then NBC’s “Law & Order” came his way, and he appeared in just under 200 episodes over eight years as Detective Ed Green. Martin had another recurring role in the NBC musical-drama series “Smash” during its second and final season, then his next long television run – lasting the better part of a decade – with his portrayal of Joe West on The CW’s “The Flash.” Martin was cast in the “Irrational” before his “Flash” engagement ended, and he went from regular to recurring status on the superhero show so that he could begin work on “The Irrational,” on which he’s also a producer. The fact that Martin started work early on “The Irrational” is a big reason the show was able to premiere as it normally would have at the start of the fall season, when so many other series were unable to start at the usual time because of the actors’ and writers’ strikes that prevented production from taking place. Enough “Irrational” episodes had been banked by the time the strikes began to enable the program to have the September start that it always was planned for.

“The Killer” (Nov. 10, Movie Premiere)
Inspired by writer Alexis “Matz” Nolent and artist Luc Jacamon’s 1998 graphic novel, this thriller tells the story of an assassin (Michael Fassbender) who, after a fateful near-miss, battles his employers — and himself — on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal. Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton also star.

“It’s three things. It’s the animation process which is difficult in and of itself. Two, very complicated show. We have a larger cast than you might see in any other show. We’re an hour-long animated show which is very unusual. ... And three, COVID. We debuted in 2021 and when we got the pick-up for Season 2 and 3, ... we had to figure out completely new processes to work with all the restrictions that came from that.” - Creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman explains to Collider why it took two years to make Season 2 of “Invincible.”
“Obviously, women have come a long way since the 19th century, and Americans have come a long way since the 19th century, but it’s still on the same continuum; we’re still fighting for the same thing. We’re still fighting for equality and opportunity, and we still have a long way to go but the themes are very much the same.” - In an interview with Parade, Cynthia Nixon refects on how the themes of “The Gilded Age” relate to the world today. 8

The series follows Miyamoto Musashi — who is modeled after late Japanese film icon Toshiro Mifune —as he embarks on a covert mission to rid Edo Japan of demons. Armed with the fabled Oni Gauntlet and his trusty sword, is Musashi enough to combat the forces of evil?
“The story had been marinating with Ron [Nyswaner] for a solid decade before I ever came on board. ... Ron had an almost religious zeal about this project, this world, and these characters that just washed over everyone involved, and made it the profound experience that it was.” - Matt Bomer, star and executive producer of “Fellow Travelers,” speaks with Vanity Fair on working with series creator Ron Nyswaner.

Shepherd and Willis are ‘Moonlighting’ on Hulu
BY JAY BOBBIN
As many classic series as there are that have been picked up by streaming services, it took a while for one of the most coveted shows to land in that space … but the comedy-mystery “Moonlighting,” which typically was a subject of next-day conversation during its original 1980s run, finally has landed in that arena on Hulu. Cybill Shepherd rebooted her stardom while Bruce Willis launched his as they played detective-agency partners Maddie Hayes and David Addison Jr.,, whose verbal fencing is the stuff of television legend. With the Al Jarreau-perforrned hit title song launching the episodes, the show became famous for being unpredictable – to the extent that ABC sometimes didn’t know if an episode would be delivered in time for its scheduled broadcast. Allyce Beasley plays the agency’s receptionist, and Curtis Armstrong joined the cast in later seasons.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Martin Truex looks to add another NASCAR Championship to his resume It’s the moment NASCAR fans have been waiting for all season. The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race has finally arrived, with all the action broadcast live on NBC from the Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona, Sunday, Nov. 5. After a regular season that saw veteran racer Martin Truex Jr. battling it out with rising star William Byron and Kyle Larson, the three racers have continued fighting for the top spot on the podium. Still among the favorites to hoist the Bill France Trophy in Phoenix, Truex Jr. managed to keep himself above the cut line in the Round of 8, placing ninth at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and achieving only his first top-10 finish in the playoffs. This came at the end of a disastrous pit strategy that almost looked to be the end for the No. 19 car. Prior to his Las Vegas race, his best finish came at the Texas Motor Speedway, where he would finish 17th. Despite the slight drop in standings, Truex Jr. remains the top driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, leading in points over teammates Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, Chris Buesher and Ryan Blaney. Throughout the regular season, Truex Jr. has proven he’s still one of the most dominant drivers on the track, with his team remaining optimistic. “That group knows why they can do it because they did it over 26 weeks,” car owner Joe Gibbs told NBC Sports. “So, it’s a matter of hitting it. Coming here, we thought we would have a real good shot. ... We’re working our butt off. We’re going overtime on pit road with practices. We’re doing everything, I think, we can do.” With everything coming down to the championship race, look for Martin Truex Jr. to come out of the gates blazing, hoping to win his second NASCAR Cup Series Championship. Full name: Martin Lee Truex Jr. Birthdate: June 29, 1980 (43) Birthplace: Mayetta, New Jersey, U.S. Height/weight: 5-11/180 pounds Team(s)/number: Joe Gibbs Racing No.19
