runa Massadas is drawn to collaborations and collaborative spaces. “I’m always trying to find that place of connection. That’s a really big part of who I am,” the Bozeman artist said on Friday from the Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture, where her latest solo exhibition, “Mountain Pose,” hangs in the Weaver Room Gallery. Massadas is energized by working alongside or near other artists. She wants to see what they are up to, not to inform her work, but to inspire her productivity. “I find it really hard to be alone in the studio,” she said.

In Oakland, California, Massadas was a member of the female and non-binary art collective CTRL+SHFT. During pandemic lockdowns, the support of members of The Binder of Women out of Los Angeles was invaluable, with artists meeting and collaborating over Zoom. In Bozeman, she said, the Emerson has provided that space. Massadas describes herself as too much of a social butterfly to work in her own bubble. She is rarely alone, however. Her studio in the Emerson’s west wing also houses a desk where her husband can work and a large play area for their now 1-year-old son (though he can often be found on her hip as she paints). It seems natural for the studio door to be open. Other artists in the building can pop in and Massadas said she likes to hear the singing from the Verge Theater

classroom across the hall. Massadas was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and moved to California with her family when she was 15. While California’s landscape of endless highways doesn’t factor into her current work, paintings merge “the tropical vistas of her native Rio de Janeiro with the volcanic formations of the neighboring Yellowstone Park,” according to her website. The colors one often associates with Rio are there, tempered somehow in a delicate balance that is bright but never garish. In her studio, Massadas digs out her first painting, from 2001. She describes how she went to a craft store and bought canvas then set up a mini studio in her parents’ garage. More COMMUNITY | 14

MARIAH CAREY 4

“It Lives Inside” (Dec. 29) Sam (Megan Suri), an Indian-American teenager struggling with her cultural identity has a falling out with her former best friend (Mohana Krishnan) and, in the process, unwittingly releases a demonic entity that grows stronger by feeding on her loneliness.

The holiday season certainly has its traditions, and one of them is the sound of Mariah Carey. The long-popular singer-songwriter with the uniquely high vocal register has had her share of hits, one of which, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” has been an annual staple since she introduced it in 1994. Of course, it’s on the musical menu as CBS and Paramount+ repeat the 2022 special “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to All” on arguably the most appropriate date of all: Monday, Dec. 25. Recorded at New York’s Madison Square Garden, the twohour show offers a bounty of relevant tunes, also including such standards as “Joy to the World” and “Sleigh Ride.” As much as Carey, recently immortalized with a Barbie doll in her image, has become closely associated with Christmas — underscoring that again with a holiday concert tour this year — she already had established herself solidly before that happened, with a career dating back to 1990 and her eponymous debut album. Helping her win a Grammy Award for best new artist, that release (the top-selling album of 1991) yielded the hit singles “Vision of Love,” “I Don’t Wanna Cry,” “Someday” and “Love Takes Time.” From there, Carey took creative gambles with her second album, “Emotions.” Though she varied styles on it, she also continued her string of hits with the title track, as well as “Can’t Let Go” and “Make It Happen.” Her next album, “Music Box,” featured “Dreamlover” and “Hero” among the cuts. Her fourth album was “Merry Christmas,” which gave the world “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as well as traditional songs of the season; an expanded 25th-anniversary edition was released in 2019. With such other tunes as “Fantasy” and “We Belong Together” also parts of her canon, Carey has remained a unique force on the music scene. There’s a

BY JAY BOBBIN

celebrityq&a BY JAY BOBBIN ‘A Christmas Story’ gets its annual 24-hour marathon Taylor Kinney

“You’ll shoot your eye out.” Peter Billingsley in “A Christmas Story” Whether you’re a holiday-movie connoisseur or just a casual viewer, you likely know where that line comes from and who it’s directed toward, time and again. The richly nostalgic 1983 comedy classic “A Christmas Story” marks its 40th anniversary as it gets its traditional 24-hour marathon starting on Christmas Eve – Sunday, Dec. 24 – on both TBS and TNT. Based on the writings of humorist Jean Shepherd, who narrates the picture, the Bob Clark-directed tale follows eager young Ralphie (a perfectly cast Peter Billingsley) through a long-ago Christmas season when he has his heart set on one very particular gift: a Red Ryder BB gun, which everyone from his mother (Melinda Dillon) to his teacher (Tedde Moore) to a department-store Santa Claus (Jeff Gillen) warns him about. For the specific warning, check the first sentence of this article again. However, there’s plenty else competing for Ralphie’s attention during the holidays. Take his younger brother Randy’s (Ian Petrella) unique way of eating a meal. Or the never-ending battle that their gruff father (Darren McGavin) wages against the household furnace. Or school pal Flick (Scott Schwartz), who accepts a “triple dog dare” and ends up getting his tongue stuck to a frozen pole. Or the decoder ring that has a disappointing result for Ralphie when he deciphers the secret message conveyed by the “Little Orphan Annie” radio program. Such are the wonderful touches laced throughout “A Christmas Story,” and we haven’t even gotten to the turkey-dinner disaster or Ralphie literally getting his mouth washed out with soap. What really makes “A Christmas Story” endure so warmly for so many devotees, though, is the strong dose of heart it has along with the many laughs it goes for. Much of the credit for that goes to Dillon and McGavin as two of the very few adults the movie pays attention to — which makes sense, since “ A Christmas Story” really is Ralphie’s story told from a youthful perspective. Dillon (who passed away this year) has a particularly wonderful scene when she retrieves Ralphie from a schoolyard fight he atypically gets the upper hand in. McGavin is more sly in playing his sentimental hand, which he does toward the end in the film’s big payoff scene. (We won’t spoil it here.) It’s no surprise that many of the “A Christmas Story” faithful watch the film multiple times during its yearly marathons, since the movie captures the feel of the holiday ideally. Plus, by now, so many of its elements are iconic that it would feel like something was amiss without at least one viewing of it every December. Happily enough, that time has come again.

OF CHICAGO FIRE ON NBC Q: Is it true that Taylor Kinney is coming back to “Chicago Fire”? A: Yes, at least for the start of the NBC drama’s upcoming Season 12, set to start Jan. 17. Presumably, the episodes will deal heavily with Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) having gone to retrieve husband and fellow firefighter Kelly Severide (Kinney), who was absent from Firehouse 51 on a special assignment. While he was away, Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) returned, and with a big personal matter to take care of … his proposal to paramedic Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer). That opens up another set of questions for the show’s future, since it recently was announced that Killmer will be leaving either during or after the series’ forthcoming season. She has been a big part of the program since Season 3, when she was brought in to play a successor to Lauren German’s Leslie Shay, who died in the line of duty. Brett has been very much at the forefront of many “Chicago Fire” episodes since, with Killmer bringing a big supply of good humor to the role. Of course, even after any departures of actors and characters that are yet to come, the “Chicago Fire” ensemble cast that has existed up to now can still be seen in repeats that are on display often. Besides being in syndication to local stations, earlier seasons are shown regularly on ION Television and USA Network, both of which also have rights to the Dick Wolf-produced sister series “Chicago P.D.”.

Bill Murray gets ‘Scrooged’ for another Christmas

BY JAY BOBBIN

Bill Murray in “Scrooged”

“A Christmas Carol” has been told in a lot of ways on the screen, but the 1988 comedy “Scrooged” remains one of the most unique variations, perfectly suited to star Bill Murray’s persona, Directed by Richard Donner (“Letha; Weapon”), the picture currently is streaming on Paramount+, with Murray as a selfish and crass television executive who wants to stage a live holiday season telecast of – of all things – Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Just as Ebenezer Scrooge was, the TV bigwig is visited by several ghosts (David Johansen, Carol Kane, Robert Hansen) who try to inspire him to correct the errors of his ways. The terrific cast also includes Karen Allen, John Forsythe, Robert Mitchum, Bobcat Goldthwait and Alfre Woodard. “Six Million Dollar Man” Lee Majors turns up in a prelude that sets up the tone of the film perfectly.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Jalen Hurts and Eagles host the Giants for a Christmas Day matchup Looking to continue a season of excellence and hoping to keep the Christmas spirits high, the Philadelphia Eagles get set to host struggling division rivals New York Giants Monday Dec. 25 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia with all the action broadcast live on Fox. The last time Philadelphia faced New York in a regular season matchup, the Eagles walked away with a 22-16 victory (Jan. 8, 2023), in what was a key victory for the Eagles. Star quarterback Jalen Hurts led the way, helpng secure the number one spot in the NFC East throwing for 229 yards, all after being sidelined with a shoulder injury weeks prior. Coming into the 2023 season fully healed, Jalen Hurts hasn’t skipped a beat throwing for 557 yards and five touchdowns in November. This performance made the Eagles the first team in NFL history to start 10-1 or better in back-to-back seasons since the 2005-06 Indianapolis Colts. Having yet another MVP season, Hurts also made history by becoming the first quaterback ever to have 10 rushing touchdowns in three straight seasons. Meanwhile for the Giants, it’s been a season to forget as they rank last in the NFL in yards per game (258.7) and rank top 10 in turnover ratio with 12 interceptions. Adding salt to the wound, the Danial Jones injury woes have not made things easier after the Giants signed him to a four-year, $160 million deal in the off-season, only to see him tear his ACL in what turned out to be a season-ending injury in only Jones’ fifth season. After falling short to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in last years playoffs, the Philadelphia Eagles are hungry to get back into the Super Bowl after proving yet again this season they have what it takes. But first, they’ll have to face a New York Giants team that will surely look to stop Hurts and the Eagles from finding any sort of comfort. Don’t miss any of your NFL on Christmas Day action as the New York Giants head to Philadelphia to take on the league leading Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field Monday Dec. 25 with all the action airing live on Fox. While rudimentary in many ways, the basic composition of the painting is obviously in the lineage of her work today. It is almost eerily similar to a painting leaning against the wall of her studio that makes one feel like they are looking up at the moon peeking through a canopy of leaves. When Massadas moved to Montana about five years ago, she had been in a long stretch of painting portraits. But the new locale also brought the return of an old subject: landscapes. “But the funny thing is that a lot of these landscapes almost feel like portraits in terms of the composition,” she said. “Mountain Pose” is thus a play on words, invoking the idea of each mountain sitting for a portrait. In the paintings that make up “Mountain Pose,” the mountain is usually front and center, drawing the viewer’s focus. Though she doesn’t practice yoga, where “mountain pose” is the basis of all standing postures, Massadas also sees “Mountain Pose” as a physical stance. Her version of the pose is a way to center herself. It has been grounding in the more difficult moments of pregnancy and motherhood over the last couple of years.

“Making these paintings is also, in some ways, like a practice of grounding myself,” she said. Massadas’ work is mostly intuitive, without lengthy studies, though she does reveal a series of small studies of what may become her next body of work. “I think it’s very valuable to me to have that space of unknowing,” she said. “I feel like you’re

supposed to know everything outside the studio, at least that’s what is expected of you. You are supposed to know what to do in your job. You are supposed to know what to do for dinner.” Leaving space for the unknown allows Massadas to explore her curiosity. She starts with a basic idea of the composition of each piece. From there, it becomes

an exploration as she takes the approach of an abstract painter. “There’s a lot of listening to the painting,” she said. While mountains are the obvious subject in the paintings that make up “Mountain Pose,” Massadas thinks of them in colors, shapes, textures and lines. She considers herself an interpreter, helping give voice to

innocent civilians. What he hears teaches him about the people of Afghanistan-Taliban and otherwise—and leads to a reckoning with 20+ years of war. Biography. A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space? Should We Settle Space? And Have We Really Thought This Through? by Kelly & Zach Weinersmith. each subject. “We’re complex people. I think we need to explore sometimes different ideas in different ways,” Massadas said. “So this is one way in which I know how to, you know, express myself and things that are happening in my head.” Other ideas she has explored include a podcast, an online cooking show and an animated short film. Massadas, however, keeps returning to painting. Seeing “Mountain Pose” in the Weaver Room feels special for Massadas, whose paintings are often shown or sent to galleries in major cities. The show signifies both acceptance and declaration: Bruna Massadas is here and this is her community. “This is such a wonderful opportunity to share my paintings with people I see every day: my neighbors, my co-workers, my MSU students, and the baristas at my favorite coffee shop,” Massadas wrote in the caption of an Instagram post. “It makes me feel more part of this town, makes Montana truly feel like home.” Massadas’ “Mountain Pose” is on exhibit in the Emerson Center’s Weaver Room until Feb. 23, 2024. An artist talk and closing reception is Friday, Feb. 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. For more information, visit https:// brunamassadas.com/. agenda. Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is based on the book: American Prometheus: the Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J.
