For the Chronicle
Rasmussen joined blues rock band Bluejack at 15, playing “crazy” gigs like the Sturgis motorcycle rally. Her dad went on the band’s first tour to supervise, but eventually learned how protective the other band members were of their young singer. Bluejack went on to open for acts like the Doobie Brothers, BB King and Pat Benetar, as well as performing at the Salt Lake City Olympic Games in 2002. Though she now runs two
separate businesses — PR Supply, a distribution company focusing on hydroponic growing supplies and packaging; and PR Productions, a film, music and event production company — Rasmussen still surrounds herself with musicians she respects. Only now she tries to bring them into Paige and the People’s Band. “I was all of their fans first,” she said of the horn-driven modern soul band which consists of Mike Koziel on keys, Casey George on bass, Tyler Schultz on guitar, Chris Naro on drums, Matt Powell-Palm on sax, Luca Rodini on trumpet, and singers Libby Sweeney and Kayleigh Armstrong. In the beginning, Rasmussen said she “went with the flow” when brother Aaron suggested that the band be “Paige and the Somethings,” then landed on the alliterative “People’s Band.” “I think that my brother had sort of ulterior motives all along,” Rasmussen said. “Like ‘I’ll put kid sister’s name in front of this band and she’s gonna work her ass off to make it the best she can.’” More PATH I 14

“The ABCs of Death” (Dec. 31) This ambitious anthology film features segments directed by over two dozen of the world’s leading talents in contemporary genre film. Inspired by children’s educational ABC books, the motion picture is comprised of 26 individual chapters, each helmed by a different director assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were then given free reign in choosing a word to create a story involving death.
“Honeymoon” (Dec. 31) Young newlyweds Paul (Harry Treadaway) and Bea (Rose Leslie) travel to remote lake country for their honeymoon. Shortly after arriving, Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night. As she becomes more distant and her behavior increasingly peculiar, Paul begins to suspect something more sinister than sleepwalking took place in the woods.

“Good Trouble” - Season 5, Part 2 (Jan. 3)
This horror comedy film sequel finds the the resilient quartet of survivors — Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) — are still surviving one very long decade after the zombie apocalypse first hit. Battling mutant strains of zombies, the group looks towards the future in the America’s heartland.
This fan-favorite drama follows the 20-something residents of Los Angeles’ The Coterie. This season, the roommates will face their toughest obstacles yet as they’re confronted with evolving relationship challenges and new career opportunities. Through highs and lows, romance and heartbreak, The Coterie crew will lean on each other while they navigate the next stage of adulthood.
When you’ve starred in a long-running series, coming up with a follow-up can be a challenge. Jon Cryer can testify to that. Having had a 12-season run in “Two and a Half Men,” he’s getting back to the business of weekly TV with “Extended Family.” The NBC sitcom starts its regular run Tuesday, Jan. 2, after having a preview showing just before Christmas. Cryer and Abigail Spencer (“Timeless”) play a divorced couple who continue to share housing while taking turns raising their children (Finn Sweeney, Sofia Capanna); the arrangement already is delicate enough when the ex-wife gets a new love interest (“Scrubs” alum Donald Faison) who owns a sports team that counts the ex-husband among its biggest fans. Cryer also is an executive producer of “Extended Family,” and he has altered his appearance by shaving his head … and for some viewers, that may echo his portrayal of villain Lex Luthor in several of The CW’s former DC Comics-related series. However, he’s legendary to many movie fans as Duckie, who pined romantically for his best friend (Molly Ringwald) in the perennially popular, John Hughes-written 1986 movie “Pretty in Pink.” While Cryer earned earlier comedy-series praise as a novice talent agent in “The Famous Teddy Z” (1989-90), if he has a signature TV role, it’s clearly Alan Harper on “Two and a Half Men” (2003-15). A nervous and lovelorn divorced parent much different from his carefree live-in brother Charlie (Charlie Sheen), Alan got a new housemate in tech tycoon Walden (Ashton Kutcher) for the show’s last three seasons. The change in co-stars placed a lot of responsibility on Cryer to keep the series afloat, which he did successfully by giving the program – still seen on such channels as TV Land, Paramount Network and IFC – those additional three years.

Now, the focus is on Cryer again to prove he can sustain another show after having that enduring hit. Time will tell whether “Extended Family” extends that reputation for him. “Black Panther” remains its own Marvel The box-office success of any Marvel superhero movie is largely a given by now (the lower returns of the recent “The Marvels” notwithstanding), so the real challenge is to come up with something different creatively. “Black Panther” surely did that. With Ryan Coogler of “Creed” fame as its director and co-writer, the 2018 film – which TNT presents Sunday, Dec. 31 – truly did generate a new world, and one that impressively made its own rules by turning a good chunk of modern history on its head. Played by the late Chadwick Boseman, the title character is the alias of the prince of a kingdom called Wakanda, which needs defenders from outside invaders ... one of them tellingly named Killmonger, played by “Creed” star MiLupita Nyong’o and Chadwick chael B. Jordan in a fine reunion with Coogler. Boseman in “Black Panther” “Black Panther” has the requisite special effects and frantic battles of any Marvel movie, but it also has a lot more in terms of depicting family relationships and the essence of an entire culture. Letitia Wright is especially fun as the lively sister of the rather straitlaced Black Panther, who supplies him with an array of weapons not unlike what Q does for James Bond. And what a cast Coogler built overall: Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”) and “Get Out” Oscar nominee Daniel Kaluuya also are included, to name several other notables. Though the length of their appearances varies, each gets a sufficient turn to make an impression quite commendably. So do creative talents in other departments; the film won three Oscars (for costume design, production design and original score). The racial considerations of “Black Panther” clearly are evident, and that goes right down to the character’s name, suggestive of the roots of social change in the 1960s ... when Marvel icons Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the comic on which the film is based. Through circumstances both similar to that period and very much of this day and age, that sensibility remains today, making the story just as relevant now if not even more so. Amanda Kloots OF THE TALK ON CBS Q: I’m seeing a lot of Amanda Kloots in commercials these days, and I enjoyed her movie “Fit for Christmas.” Will she be making any more films? A: It’s quite possible, since she has shown herself to want to give outlets to her creativity wherever she can find them. That 2022 CBS movie (which was repeated recently, and which she also co-wrote) came from a very personal place for Kloots, since her character in it incorporated the career she has had as a fitness instructor … so whether that aspect also would have to factor into any other films she makes remains to be seen. Also seen weekdays on CBS as a co-host of “The Talk,” Kloots used to be one of Radio City Music Hall’s famed Rockettes, and she has been in such Broadway musicals as “Follies,” “Young Frankenstein” and “Bullets Over Broadway.” She also was a Season 30 contestant on “Dancing With the Stars,” ultimately placing fourth in that competition – and also addressing the high kicks she performs in the current commercials referenced in this question. Kloots has done much to continue memorializing her late husband, fellow Broadway performer, Nick Cordero, following his death from COVID-19 in 2020. She met him while they both were in “Bullets Over Broadway,” and she has posted on Instagram about him often. She also wrote the memoir “Live Your Life: My Story of Loving and Losing Nick Cordero,” and she has a young son by him, named Elvis.

Allan Jones, Harpo Marx, Chico Marx and Groucho Marx in “A Night at the Opera”
BY JAY BOBBIN
The Marx Brothers spend “A Night at the Opera” If merriment is wanted to start a new year, the Marx Brothers are among the most ideal suppliers of it. Groucho, Harpo and Chico (minus sibling Zeppo, who had just left the act) refined their material to perfection, and “A Night at the Opera” – which Turner Classic Movies presents Monday, Jan, 1, as part of a Marx marathon to welcome 2024 – shows just how well they honed their work. The 1935 laughfest does turn an operatic performance into something of a circus, and the siblings are up for every humorous turn of the plot. Groucho plays shyster lawyer Otis B. Driftwood, who’s overseeing a client’s (frequent Marx foil Margaret Dumont) investment in an opera company. A celebrated, pompous tenor (Walter Woolf King) has his eye on the same role as an earnest aspiring singer (Allan Jones), and both men have a romantic interest in the show’s soprano (Kitty Carlisle). A related ship voyage from Italy to New York is filled with hilarity, encompassing a scene in a small, increasingly packed stateroom that‘s widely regarded as one of the funniest sequences in movie history.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Matthews and the Leafs look to knock Kings off their throne After a bit of eggnog and recharging with loved ones, Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs head to Los Angeles as they look to even their regular season series against the Los Angeles Kings, Tuesday, Jan. 2, at the Crypto.com Arena, with the game broadcast live on ESPN+. Hoping for a better outcome compared to the last time these two teams met, Matthews and the Leafs will be looking to come out swinging after dropping their first meeting against the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 in front of a packed home crowd at Scotiabank Arena. Despite the result, captain John Tavares managed to get on the scoreboard, with Mitch Marner and William Nylander providing the assists. For Matthews, even though he was held off the scoresheet, he’s been one of the more consistent players for the Buds and there is no doubt he’ll be looking to have more of an impact. Well over 20 games into the year, Matthews has once again cemented himself as an elite goal scorer in the NHL, kicking off the season with back-to-back hat tricks in the Maple Leafs’ first two games of the season — a record only achieved by four other players: Alex Ovechkin (2017-18) and Cy Denneny, Joe Malone and Reg Noble (all 1917-18) in NHL history. However, the Kings significantly outplayed the Leafs in just about every area of their last matchup. Cam Talbot, who is having a Vezina Trophy type of season, provided stellar goaltending, stopping 29 of 30 shots, with the Kings getting solid contributions all around from Anze Kopitar, Trevor Moore, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Kevin Fiala, Phillip Danault, Arthur Kaliyev, Quinton Byfield and Andres Englund. Despite John Tavares being the lone forward to score, fans can remain optimistic as Matthews has not been held off the scoresheet in more than four games this season, proving his resilience even when things aren’t going his way. Last season, Matthews battled through injuries and, despite all that, racked up 85 points in 75 games. Path/from 2 A similar story emerged when Paige and the People’s Band performed on MontanaPBS program “11th and Grant with Eric Funk,” which aired in November 2018. In an interview, Aaron called the band “Paige and the Responsibility.” Paige and the People’s Band opened for Phox at the Filling Station in 2016, the only gig featuring brother Aaron, who had just started a family. The band is almost totally different now, Rasmussen said. Only she and Koziel remain. Though Rasmussen is now responsible for much of the business of the band — from booking to marketing — she still doesn’t get on stage and announce that she is Paige and the rest of the members are the People’s Band. Sure, having her name is a nice stroke of the ego, but Rasmussen said there is also a slight bit of terror involved with being a frontwoman, of being “Paige and the Responsibility.” So when Rasmussen thinks of the band, she thinks of the collective. She thinks of how band members contribute musically and add their own flavor to performances. “It’s so collaborative and it really is everybody’s band,” she said. In 2024, Rasmussen said Paige

and the People’s Band is finally hitting the studio. Though she has long been a songwriter, much of that talent has lent itself to others’ voices. Songwriting inspiration comes in many forms. Sometimes it’s a thread of an idea that Rasmussen tries to catch and pull in, an act she said is akin to what Elizabeth Gilbert describes in her book “Big Magic.” You have to be ready to follow the idea, to record it in the moment
before it disappears. “Here it comes. I gotta get ready for it,” Rasmussen said, describing an approaching idea. “So you pull over your car because you’re like ‘It’s going to happen.’ Something is going to come out that’s going to be — something. Who knows? It could be utter crap or it could be magic.” But if you lose the moment, that bit of inspiration may be gone forever.
The morning of her interview with the Chronicle, Rasmussen felt such a pull while thinking about a sense of home and what that means. She did pull over her car, digging into the feeling of being away from Bozeman, of feeling lonely and out of place and wishing someone would give her permission to come home. The fledgling song became a waltz in her head. “I sang it into my recorder in ¾ as if I were inviting someone

to come home again,” Rasmussen said. “It was lovely. And it was what I would have wanted someone to say to me in those times when I felt alienated.” These memories stem from experiences like living and working at a remote fishing lodge in Alaska, or performing with a Cuban show in Las Vegas. Though Rasmussen may have missed home at times, she said music carried her through. It’s soul food, she said, a necessary way to connect people to each other. “I don’t know if I ever considered putting it down,” Rasmussen said. “This is joyful. This is fun. I’m actually OK at this.
