Checking in with

JANE KRAKOWSKI 4

Jake Johnson makes his feature film directorial debut in this new comedy thriller. Offered $1 million to take part in a reality game show where hunters try to kill him, Tommy (Johnson) thinks he’s found the perfect loophole: they can only attack when he’s alone. But, when none of his family believe the game is real, Tommy finds himself fighting to stay alive and learning that he has a lot to live for. Anna Kendrick, Andy Samberg, GaTa, Wayne Brady, and Emily Hampshire also star.

Since Jane Krakowski is quite musical herself, it’s appropriate that she’s presiding over one of the most musical games on television. The award-winning “Ally McBeal,” “30 Rock” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” alum is back as the host of “Celebrity Name That Tune,” which has just returned to Fox with new episodes on Tuesdays. In the update of a classic contest that dates back to the 1950s, personalities from the worlds of entertainment and sports challenge one another to name a song via the fewest clues, thus yielding the familiar phrase, “I can name that tune in [whatever number] notes.” Correct guesses can help the players win sizable money for the charities of their choice. Music industry veteran and former “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson is the show’s bandleader. Though Krakowski started her screen career with roles in such movies as “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983) and “Fatal Attraction” (1987), she established her musical cred fairly quickly by appearing on Broadway as a teenager in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Starlight Express.” She soon followed that with a Tony Award-nominated performance in “Grand Hotel,” and such other New York shows as “Company” and “Once Upon a Mattress” followed for her. So did a revival of “Nine,” which earned her a Tony in 2003. At that time, Krakowski had just finished a five-season run as Elaine Vassal on Fox’s “Ally McBeal,” a comedy-drama that was famous for integrating fantasy and musical sequences, making the show an ideal fit for her — particularly on the occasions when she was permitted to cut loose within a tune. The actress sometimes got to do the same on NBC’s “30 Rock” as Jenna Maroney, a self-involved performer whose career was marked by mishaps and wrong turns; conversely, Krakowski earned four Primetime Emmy nominations for the show.

“Gordon Ramsay’s Road Trip: Spanish Vacation” (Jan. 12) Chef Gordon Ramsay hits the road with his friends and colleagues, Gino D’Acampo and Fred Sirieix, traveling the world on the road trip of a lifetime, enjoying the sights, adventures and hidden culinary gems.

Lately, Krakowski also has been appearing in the Apple TV+ series “Schmigadoon!,” another show with a musical motif. Thanks to that and “Celebrity Name That Tune,” if she’s not as comfortable and satisfied with her TV employment as she’s ever been, that certainly must come close. Steve McQueen is ultracool as ‘Bullitt’ on TCM “Bullitt” is legendary for its midpoint car chase through the streets of San Francisco, but there’s also plenty else to recommend about it. The Peter Yates-directed 1968 crime drama gets another of its frequent Turner Classic Movies showings Friday, Jan. 12, as part of a “Guest Programmer” night of selections made by “John Wick” franchise director Chad Stahelski. The picture remains most famous as one of the best examples of title star Steve McQueen’s particular brand of screen cool, as he plays a self-styled Steve McQueen in “Bullitt” police detective who’s chosen to protect a witness for an ambitious politician. Robert Vaughn (who also shared screen credit with McQueen in “The Magnificent Seven” and “The Towering Inferno”) also is great as said politician, who’s outwardly charming but covertly cold-blooded in seeking to advance his own agenda — so he isn’t very pleased when an assassin gets to the witness before the latter can testify, leaving both him and one of Bullitt’s colleagues in very bad shape. With tenuous support from his boss (Simon Oakland), Bullitt and his partner (McQueen pal and frequent co-star Don Gordon) seek those responsible ... leading to the car chase referenced earlier, for which auto enthusiast McQueen spent quite a bit of time behind the wheel himself. That’s much of why the result is so exciting, since one clearly can see it’s actually McQueen doing the driving. Another terrific chase caps “Bullitt,” set near and across the runways of the City by the Bay’s airport — and one only can marvel at the shots of McQueen ducking under moving planes, at a time when it had to be done for real without inserting an actor via computer-enhanced imagery. (Almost 30 years later, a similar pursuit between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in “Heat” served as something of a homage to that sequence.) FRIDAYTHURSDAY, JANUARY 511, 2024

Julianne Moore OF GAME CHANGE ON HBO Q: Someone told me that Julianne Moore started her career on a soap opera. Is that true? A: Yes … two of them, in fact. Her earliest professional credit is “The Edge of Night,” on which she appeared for several episodes in 1984. Soon afterward, she joined “As the World Turns,” playing the dual roles of Frannie Hughes and her look-alike relative Sabrina. She earned a Daytime Emmy Award for her work on that show, which she did continuously from 1985 to 1988; she then made a return appearance in 2010. Moore began doing primetime TV parts during her “As the World Turns” run, notably opposite Valerie Bertinelli in the 1987 miniseries “I’ll Take Manhattan,” then she was hired for TV-movies including “Money, Power, Murder” and “The Last to Go.” Around the same time, she also moved into theatrical films with “Tales From the Darkside: The Movie” and “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” and that became her principal venue from the early 1990s forward, with her eventual win of an Academy Award for best actress for “Still Alice” (2014). After doing guest stints along the way on “Saturday Night Live” and “Sesame Street,” Moore made a particularly significant return to TV by playing former Alaska governor and vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin in the 2012 HBO project “Game Change.” She won a Primetime Emmy Award for the dramatization of the 2008 election season, with Ed Harris playing Sen. John McCain, who chose Palin as his running mate

Burt Reynolds is back behind the wheel as the ‘Bandit’

BY JAY BOBBIN

When it comes to actors known for on-screen car chases, Burt Reynolds has a secure place on the list, and “Smokey and the Bandit” is a major reason why. Sundance presents the 1977 comedy hit — directed by Reynolds crony and former stuntman Hal Needham — Saturday, Jan. 13, featuring the star as a fast-driving troubleshooter hired to transport a cargo of beer illegally across state lines. While his partner (Jerry Reed, who also supplies some of the music here) hauls the physical stash in a large truck, the Bandit (Reynolds) scouts for trouble en route … and that actually finds him, in the form of a runaway bride (an amusing, engaging Sally Field) whose would-be father-in-law (Jackie Gleason, playing it broadly and hilariously) is a “Smokey” or lawman who’s determined to catch the wily Bandit. As they say, good luck with that.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Eastern Conference finals preview in early post-season matchup as Celtics visits the Bucks It’s another potential Eastern Conference final matchup as Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks get set to take on a hot Boston Celtics team Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, with all the action airing live on TNT. Last season saw the Bucks finish with the best regular season record, winning 58 games and becoming the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, with Antetokounmpo averaging over 30 points per game and 10 rebounds, putting himself firmly into the MVP conversation once again, having already won it twice, in 2019 and 2020. This year, the Greek Freak is back doing what he does best, wreaking havoc with his athleticism to prove yet again that he is a top five player on both ends through his first 15 games, averaging 29.9 points, 10.8 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 60.7 field goal percentage. However, there is one glaring difference this season — the addition of superstar point guard Damian Lillard. In their regular season debut against the Philadelphia 76ers, the duo would combine for a total of 62 points, with Antetokounmpo adding 13 rebounds and shooting 10-for-22 from the floor. While Lillard has brought a breath of fresh air to the Bucks, it hasn’t come without its growing pains, with Lillard taking a career-low 14.2 shots per game and posting his lowest usage rating since 2015. Meanwhile, for the Boston Celtics, the addition of NBA champion and former Milwaukee Buck Drew Holiday has been seamless, with the Celtics off to an incredible start this year sitting top five in points differential (+8.4), points allowed (108.1) and rebounds (47.5). The last time these two teams faced each other, the Celtics walked away victorious, 119116, with franchise player Jason Taytum playing through a cold but putting up 23 points and 11 rebounds and with Jaylen Brown adding 26 points and eight assists. For the Bucks, Antetokounmpo was held to only 21 points, having come off scoring 40 points in his previous two games. Looking for a much better performance in their second regular season matchup, look for Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks to come out with guns blazing as the battle for the top seed in the Eastern Conference continues Thursday, Jan. 11, as the Milwaukee Bucks host the Boston Celtics at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, with all the action broadcast live on TNT. Full name: Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo Birthdate: Dec. 6, 1994 (28) Birthplace: Athens, Greece Height/weight: 6-11/243 pounds Team(s): Milwaukee Bucks, No.34 (2013-present), Filathlitikos, No. 4 (2011-2013)

After the twin towers fell on 9/11, hospitals were filled with injured marines. Hastings’ sons were deployed. Hastings himself fell deathly ill and started looking for purpose in his life. Then, finally finding some serenity on a fishing trip in Canada, Jean suggested flying a “C-130 load” of wounded warriors to Canada to experience it for themselves and let “god and nature do its work.” Hastings led the foundation for nine years. Part of the Warriors & Quiet Waters mission is to help veterans on their “hunt for purpose” post combat, to show them they are “built for more” than their military service. Through his retirement, and again after Jean’s death, music has been that purpose for Hastings. Now, he has turned back to the piano. The instrument still fascinates him, and he touts the variety of sounds possible from its 88 keys. “Playing gives me a peace and a serenity that not even fly fishing does,” he said.
