H
aving nine lives is not reserved for cats, Chace McNinch said on Friday. Humans may not defy death quite as frequently as felines, but we possess a unique ability for reinvention. We can choose to start new lives for ourselves.
McNinch seems to be on her fourth life, this one born in Bozeman where creating a community around comedy, music and LGTBQ+ advocacy has allowed for more confidence to express and embrace
her entire self. Here, she is the technical director at Last Best Comedy, where she accompanies improv groups and has been named “Montana’s funniest human person.” She will perform at Last Best on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. with the improv musical “Winging It.” McNinch’s first life begins in middle America, specifically, Kansas. It was a very conservative upbringing, with fundamentalist Christian values at the fore that landed McNinch in very small private religious schools for most of her childhood. The family moved often, but landed back in Kansas by the time McNinch was in high school. It was isolating, though in hindsight McNinch said it allowed her to be laser-focused on music.
“If my life were a video game, every time I had the chance to level up, I pushed plus one on music,” McNinch said. “So right now I’m like a level 99 bard. And I’m a level two archer.” Describing herself as a “socially awkward dweeb,” McNinch constantly turned to music, learning new instruments and diving into music theory. When she started at age 3, she was able to sound out “Mary Had a Little Lamb” on a little toy keyboard. Now, the list of instruments seems unending: piano, drums, guitar, hammer dulcimer, bass, mandolin, banjo, trombone. There could be more, she said, if she gave them any time. More REINVENT I 14

Checking in with
JASON PRIESTLEY 4
Never count out Jason Priestley — as an actor, a director or both. The “Beverly Hills, 90210” alumnus tends to resurface in series television when it’s not expected, and he’s doing that again in the new show “Wild Cards,” airing Wednesdays on the CW. He plays the incarcerated veteran-con-artist father of another swindler (Vanessa Morgan, “Riverdale”) who has teamed with a disgraced police detective (Giacomo Giannotti, “Grey’s Anatomy”) to merge their special talents for crime-solving. Priestley’s character is concerned about his daughter’s new arrangement, but that doesn’t keep him from giving her advice and help from behind prison bars when she needs it. The new role lets Priestley incorporate the wry humor for which he’s been known ever since he played Brandon Walsh in “90210,” with that role allowing him to combine an earnestness with a mildly sarcastic take on the world. The part gave Priestley a decade-long run (1990-2000), before he played a variation of himself in “BH90210,” which had a brief run in the summer of 2019 and also featured the other principal members of the original cast in spins on their real-life images. In Priestley’s case, his “BH90210” doppelganger was also a director, and that’s a job he started doing during his original “90210” days, ultimately helming 15 episodes of that show. He went on to direct installments of “Call Me Fitz,” “Private Eyes” and “Raising Expectations,” in which he also starred. Additionally, he called the shots in stints on such series as “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” “Haven,” “The Night Shift,” “Rookie Blue,” “Saving Hope” and “Van Helsing.” Don’t be surprised to see a directing credit for Priestley in “Wild Cards” as it goes along, too. While such double duty isn’t necessarily a requirement for him on any show he acts in, it’s a nice bonus since he

‘Titanic’ sets sail again on Showtime celebrityprofile The basic story had been told earlier in other films and television projects, but even though it matches a fictional romance to facts of the ocean disaster, the Oscar-winning 1997 version of “Titanic” is the definitive one for many people. Being presented by Showtime on Sunday, Jan. 21, writer-director James Cameron’s epic is a beautifully structured saga that cleverly takes the audience from contemporary times — as a treasure hunter (Bill Paxton) and his colleagues scour the ship’s sunken wreckage — back to its maiden Leonardo DiCaprio and voyage in 1912, when it was launched with Kate Winslet in “Titanic” much pomp and circumstance. Various passengers are introduced, including the allegedly “unsinkable” Molly Brown (played here by Kathy Bates), but two key characters are the ones who came to matter most to the vast majority of moviegoers: privileged Rose and stowaway Jack, roles that elevated the highly charismatic-together Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio to superstardom. (Their later reteaming in “Revolutionary Road” surely was a bid to benefit from their iconic teamwork here, good as they also are in that picture.) From evading Rose’s spurned and vengeful fiance Cal (Billy Zane) to navigating blocked and/ or flooded passageways, the couple’s experience aboard the Titanic turns into an endless series of perils ... ultimately enhancing and fusing their affection for each other, to the point where the legendary phrase “I’ll never let go” is much more than mere lip service. For as personal as the Jack-and-Rose story is, the production that surrounds them is massive and impressive, certainly justifying the 11 Academy Award wins that included best picture and best director (and making for what was one of the highest-rated Oscar telecasts to date, since so many observers were invested in how the movie fared in that ceremony). Cameron united Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox together to finance the project, and the result is stunning visually, particularly in scenes of the ocean liner in its final throes. Michael Jackson OF THRILLER 40 ON SHOWTIME/PARAMOUNT+ Q: I saw that the documentary about the 40th anniversary of “Thriller” had a lot of footage of Michael Jackson recording other songs as well for that album. How was that material acquired? A: As one of music’s ultimate superstars at the time, Jackson clearly was worth following for the filmmakers who decided to capture every element of the process that they could, leading to much footage that hadn’t been seen before director Nelson George incorporated it into the project. Among the highly notable portions of the program is Paul McCartney’s in-studio participation in “The Girl Is Mine,” which Jackson wrote, and which was the first single released from “Thriller.” Of course, there was plenty of detail on the title tune, which yielded one of the most popular music videos ever. John Landis directed it as a mini-movie at Jackson’s behest, since the singer had appreciated the filmmaker’s work on “An American Werewolf in London” … which the style of the “Thriller” video emulates. As much archival footage as there is in “Thriller 40” — which became available on both Showtime and Paramount+ at the start of December — director Nelson George also included contemporary interviews with such personalities as Landis, Usher, Mary J. Blige, Will.I.Am, Misty Copeland and Mark Ronson. As hard as it might be to conceive that some of today’s younger generation might not know who Michael Jackson was, such comments help to contextualize what a major piece of pop culture “Thriller” (the top-selling album of all time globally) was and is.

celebrityquotes
“It’s an interesting way that they tell this story because I haven’t seen this in — I don’t think ever, especially in a season of television where the two main characters spend the majority of the season not interacting with one another. They’re sort of on parallel tracks until, of course, they aren’t, and they come smashing together. I think that’s an interesting way to do it.” - Jon Hamm on the new season of “Fargo”
“TV comes from an effort to sell soap in boxes, but it’s evolved into more complex narratives. HBO was key in turning it into a more profound art form. It’s now just as complex, if not more complex, than cinema. It’s like creating a perfect movie again and again episodically to tell a single story. There’s a cultural impact of it on our identities. Movies are a beautiful affair you think about later in life. TV shows are relationships you keep coming back to.” - Issa López, showrunner for “True Detective: Night Country” 8

Now, protective older brother Kevin must figure out how to work with both Gretel and her pet Hamster to protect their city from mysterious dangers.
“Storage Wars” - Seasons 12 & 13 (Available Now) Garage sales are an old-school waste of time, at least in the eyes of the treasure hunters featured in this reality series. It follows a group of bidders looking to strike it rich by buying repossessed storage units. They’re at once detectives and gamblers, as they get only a quick flashlight-aided peek inside the units before they decide if they want to make a bid, and for how much. It’s a high-stakes game that can pay off big time — one featured collector bought a unit for $800 and sold its contents for a $40,000 profit — or leave one sifting through the equivalent of trash.

“FEUD: Capote Vs. The Swans” (FX/FXX/Hulu — Jan. 31/Feb. 1, Limited Series Premiere) This second installment in Ryan Murphy’s FEUD anthology is based on the bestselling book “Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era” by Laurence Leamer. Acclaimed writer Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) surrounded himself with a coterie of society’s most elite women, whom he nicknamed “the swans,” Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. Naomi Watts, Slim Keith, C.Z. Guest and Lee Radziwill also star.

‘The Producers’ launches TCM’s latest Oscar salute
BY JAY BOBBIN
Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder in “The Producers”
Mel Brooks was known for his work in other mediums when he made his first big feature-film mark with “The Producers,” and the 1967 comedy is the first attraction in a Turner Classic Movies night tied into channel co-host Dave Karger’s new interview book “50 Oscar Nights” Monday, Jan. 22. Appropriately in keeping with that theme, Brooks received an Academy Award for best original screenplay for the picture, which almost didn’t get a wide release until fan Peter Sellers took it upon himself to crusade on its behalf. Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder play backers of a Broadway musical that they want to fail, hoping to cash in on that result. No one is more surprised nor dismayed than they are when the show becomes a hit, meaning that they’ll have to pay off other investors … with funds they don’t have. True to Brooks’ style, the humor is often off-color; the marvelous cast also includes Dick Shawn, Kenneth Mars, Estelle Winwood, Lee Meredith and later “Maude” co-star Bill Macy.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Hunter Dickinson and Jayhawks get set to battle Cyclones Another NCAA Big 12 match-up hits the court as the Kansas Jayhawks get set to take on the hungry Iowa State Cyclones, Saturday, Jan 27. Meeting the Cyclones at home, the game airs live on CBS from the James H. Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. Entering the 2023-24 season, the Kansas Jayhawks are one of the favorites entering the year as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA. Beginning this year on a five-game win streak, their success this season has been exceptional (9-1 as of Dec. 15), and with the major acquisition of a fourth-year transfer from Michigan State, Hunter Dickinson, a projected second-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Jayhawks are looking to win it all. Coming off his previous three seasons with Michigan, Dickinson is a presence at center, having averaged 18.5 points per game, 9.0 rebounds per game and 1.8 blocks per game last season. With the Jayhawks kicking off the season on fire, Dickinson hasn’t skipped a beat, improving in just about every area of his game, averaging 19.4 points per game while shooting for 63.7% from field goal range. On the defensive side, he’s been a handful for teams in the paint, averaging 12.6 rebounds per game and an improved average of 2.4 blocks per game, proving to his team and himself he made the right off-season move. Having shown right out the gates to be a star player for the Jayhawks and solidifying his position in collegiate basketball, his dominance at the center position is exactly what the Jayhawks need as they continue their chase for another Big 12 championship and national championship. Full name: Hunter Dickinson Birthdate: Nov. 25, 2000 (23) Birthplace: Alexandria, Virginia Height/weight: 7-2/260 pounds Team(s): Michigan (2020-2023), Kansas (2023-present) High School: DeMatha Catholic HS

Reinvent/from 2 While teenage years are filled with many forms of uncertainty as youth navigate the world, music was a constant for McNinch. On stage, even when performing in the family’s church, the anxiety melted away. “Even if it goes bad, I still have control over how bad I want to go, you know?” McNinch said. “And the second that I’m off stage, I’m back to hiding from people. I just hate talking. I would go sit in the van after plenty of shows and I would just wait to leave.” There’s a little bit of irony here, as the interview for this story over coffee at Rockford in downtown Bozeman lasted almost three hours. But that’s McNinch’s latest life. McNinch’s second life probably began around the time she applied for and got into Greenville College (now Greenville University) in Greenville, Illinois. While college wasn’t her path, it did lead McNinch to playing bass with the Noble Manes. And that band led to a connection with a country act known as Broseph. At first, Broseph played for drinks and tips, but soon got serious. They started touring as a supporting act to country

would aid in her self-discovery. She didn’t play a note in her first year in Portland, instead diving deep into health care and legal systems necessary to transition. Still with no friends and working from home, McNinch said the onset of the pandemic didn’t change much in her life. It was only when she stumbled on a Reddit livestream of a lizard in a cage that things started to change again. If the lizard could get the views, couldn’t she? Soon, up to 100,000 people would watch her live streams, where McNinch sat at the piano and improvised. Here, there were no rules. The ideas, the direction were her own. It was the first time she had performed in years. “It’s weird and it’s abstract, and it keeps them guessing,” she said. “But I’m good enough at what I do musically to back it up with actual talent. So they’re just like, I don’t know what this is, but I want to watch this.” But personally, things weren’t great. She had broken up with her girlfriend, but the pair were still living together in lockdowns. A planned visit to England to visit a new prospect fell apart. McNinch needed out. Her fourth life began when she made the choice to head to Bozeman, where a friend was
offering a chance to clear her head, and a couch to sleep on. It turned out to be what she needed. In Bozeman, McNinch has discovered how to be a “socially functioning person.” She went to her first Pride. She became the LGBTQ liaison for the Belonging in Bozeman Project. “I wasn’t ready for how supportive and unique of an opportunity Montana and Bozeman would be for music, for comedy, for existing while queer,” McNinch said. Now, she is starting new musical projects (with Last Best bar manager Sara-Paule Koeller of Diamond Princess and Cyera Thackrey of Witch Bitch, namely), and recording with friends across the country (like Superpink). She has honed her love for musical improvisation into comedy. She loves anti-comedy, people like Andy Kaufman and Tom Green. She loves absurdity, but not obnoxiousness for the sake of obnoxiousness. Life, she said, is absurd. But living it authentically is the best present we can give ourselves. “No matter who we are, even the straightest, widest cis man to ever exist, as long as you’re at peace with yourself and you know yourself, that’s the most beautiful gift,” McNinch said.

McNinch was on the keys. All was going well in terms of career growth and opportunity. All was not going well internally for McNinch. The second life was given a quick death when McNinch came out as a trans woman. “At this point in the game, I have no shame about who I
am and talking about identity stuff,” McNinch said. “I never wanted that to be the focus. I wanted to be a musician first, entertainer first, but I’ve also realized it’s really integral to the whole story and what I’m doing with my life.” Coming out caused both personal and professional conflict, and McNinch found themselves living in Nashville with no network, no friends or family to lean on.
