Everyday magic RACHEL HERGETT For the Chronicle

On Saturday, Gallatin Valley Regional park will be aglow with the light of nearly 300 fanciful lanterns crafted by local artists and community members out of paper, fabric and various structural materials. Beginning at 6 p.m., participants in the Winter Bloom Lantern Parade organized by Random Acts of Silliness will walk the mile path around the park’s two ponds, bringing light and warmth to the depth of February. “We think a lot about what the community needs and when exactly they need it,” said Danielle Thompsen, “chief enchantment

officer” with Random Acts of Silliness, an organization that focuses on bringing whimsy and delight to people of all ages. Aside from the hundreds of lanterns expected, there is an open invitation for community members to create their own and join the parade or to simply come and take it all in. Lantern parades, according to Thompsen, are increasingly popular around the world. Many of these are grassroots efforts where little organizational structure is needed: The communities already know about lantern parades and how to construct their own. Random Acts of Silliness hopes to plant that sort of seed in Bozeman. More MAGIC | 14

“Next Goal Wins” (Feb. 15)

While “FBI: Most Wanted” has had its share of cast changes since it premiered, at least with the latest one, the performer and character are familiar. As executive producer Dick Wolf ’s first “FBI” drama spinoff starts its fifth season Tuesday, Feb. 13, on CBS and Paramount+, Shantel VanSanten is moving the role of Special Agent Nina Chase — which she played as a “special guest star” on the parent show, particularly during star Missy Peregrym’s (“Rookie Blue”) most recent maternity leave — to “Most Wanted.” In effect, she’s succeeding Alexa Davalos (“The Man in the High Castle”), who has left the latter series after portraying Special Agent Kristin Gaines for the past two seasons. VanSanten’s arrival follows several other high-profile exits from “FBI: Most Wanted.” Julian McMahon (“Nip/Tuck”) departed in the third season, with Dylan McDermott (“The Practice”) then joining as the leader of the show’s investigative team; founding co-star Kellan Lutz (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2,” 2012) also left in Season 3, with Davalos replacing him; and Nathaniel Arcand (“Heartland”), who appeared as McMahon’s character’s brother-inlaw and fellow agent, left after the first two seasons. With VanSanten resurfacing in the “FBI” world, she brings some rich history with her alter ego. Nina is now a mother; her child’s father being Special Agent Stuart Scola, the part portrayed in the original “FBI” by John Boyd (“24”). Given that relationship, and producer Wolf ’s propensity for crossing characters over between shows in the same franchise (see: his “Law & Order” and “Chicago”

Any constant TV viewer knows that VanSanten is quite used to series work, from “One Tree Hill” and “The Messengers” to “Shooter” and “For All Mankind.” Since she already has lived inside the mind of Nina Chase, that only can be an advantage for her as she reports for “FBI: Most Wanted” duty full time. Olivia Rodrigo

Very simply, “Mission: Impossible - Fallout” was the movie of the summer of 2018. And it certainly was one of the movies of that year. In promoting the spy adventure — which FX shows Sunday, Feb. 11 — Tom Cruise said he just wanted to give the audience its money’s worth, and did he ever. For any and all complaints that there are about Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Tom Cruise and needless sequels, the sixth round Ving Rhames star in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” of the “Mission” franchise is a series-best (at least to date), thanks to the know-how of Cruise and returning writer-director Christopher McQuarrie. The picture not only offers a jaw-dropping series of action sequences, it does a deep dive into the personhood of IMF agent Ethan Hunt, as those closest to him face threats of very bad things from an enemy. That alternately sways and doesn’t sway Hunt from his mission to stop the theft of plutonium, to be used on very specifically chosen targets. That’s the nominal plot. As for the action? Hunt makes a HALO jump out of a plane. Hunt has a major brawl with a CIA man (Henry Cavill) in a restroom. Hunt goes racing through the streets of Paris at breakneck speed. And all of it is thrilling, especially since you can see that it’s really Cruise doing it. Also back for this mission – and neatly tying together virtually every other movie “Mission” that came before – are Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan and Alec Baldwin, with great additions in a steely Angela Bassett as an espionage boss and a lethal Vanessa Kirby as an agile killer. OF BIZAARDVARK ON DISNEY Q: I’ve enjoyed seeing Olivia Rodrigo on TV fairly often lately. Someone told me she was a regular on a series. Is that true? A: As many young fans can confirm, she was a Disney personality before becoming a music superstar who went into this year’s Grammy Awards with six nominations, tying with Taylor Swift (among others). One of Rodrigo’s first performing credits was a jeans commercial, then she had the title role in the direct-to-video 2015 movie “An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success.” In 2016, she was hired to play Paige — a guitarist, thus letting Rodrigo display her musical inclinations — on the Disney Channel series “Bizaardvark,” and she was homeschooled during the three seasons she was on that show. She then moved on to the Disney+ program “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” which again enabled her to show her music talents during the three seasons she was on it. Then in 2022, Rodrigo decided to turn her focus principally to her musical career, which had started to pay off with her Grammy win for best new artist at the 2022 ceremony (one of seven categories in which she was nominated, also encompassing victories for best pop vocal album for “Sour” and best pop solo performance for “Drivers License”). Her Grammy bids this year were linked to her second studio album, “Guts.”

Tuesday and Thursday kids age birth to 35 months meet up. They spend about 15 minutes enjoying songs, movement and a Board book. The remaining 45 minutes are spent in sensory play, processing art, and gross motor exploration. That may sound a bit advanced for

a wee baby, but they love it! On Wednesday and Friday, the kids aged 3-5 meet up. Their Storytime features 20 minutes of songs and movement, one or two full-length picture books, and 40 minutes of sensory play, processing art, and fine motor exploration. Kids may be invited to use tools like scissors, glue, or tweezers during this Wed/Fri program and may handle materials that are choking hazards for babies. Pay close attention! Questions?

‘Goodfellas’ retains its power and impact

BY JAY BOBBIN

Widely considered director Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece, the first-rate, fact-inspired 1990 crime drama “Goodfellas” — which AMC shows Sunday, Feb. 11 — casts Ray Liotta as Henry Hill, a Mob novice who is mentored by veterans portrayed by Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Paul Sorvino. In a picture packed with memorable performances, even by players who have only a couple of lines, Pesci won an Oscar as an underworld lieutenant with a hair-trigger temper. Lorraine Bracco (who stayed in a gangster milieu later in TV’s “The Sopranos”) is also fabulous as Hill’s wife, who slowly unravels in the face of his life of illegality. Always worth noting in a viewing of this film (which is dubbed substantially for basic-cable showings, given its frequently profane language) is the superbly chosen soundtrack, sort of a hits parade spanning the 1950s through the 1970s; in fact, veteran singer Jerry Vale turns up as himself in a nightspot sequence.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Volkanovski returns to featherweight looking to dominate at UFC 298 It’s time! Another weekend of UFC bouts is right around the corner, as UFC 298 kicks off Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski gets set to defend his featherweight title belt for a sixth time against the 26-year-old rising star from Halle, Germany, Ilia “El Matador” Topuria, in the main event, airing live on ESPN+ and PPV, with prelims live on ESPN. Having remained undefeated in the featherweight division, Alexander Volkaonvski looks determined to get himself back into the win column after putting his win streak on the line, coming up short twice against a formidable lightweight champion in Islam Makhachev. Still regarded by many as the greatest featherweight in mixed martial arts, his failed bid to become a two-division champ has cast some doubts, with his return to the octagon coming just four months after a knockout loss at UFC 294 in October. Speaking to Michael Bisping on his YouTube channel, Volkanovski is confident in his abilities and experience having fought three times in 2023. “He’s a good matchup. A lot of hype around him, undefeated, I think this is just the perfect bounce-back fight for me as well. A lot of people are saying he’s dangerous, which, look, he is dangerous,” Volkanovski said. “He’s a powerful dude. He’s undefeated. That’s a story in itself. You’ve got the story of what happened in my last fight. People are like, ‘Oh, is he coming back too soon?’ All this is part of the story. When I look at it, I’m like, ‘Mate, I’ve been in camp for that long.’ I’m hearing people saying, ‘Oh, he’s back too soon.’ I just can’t see it,” Volkanovski said. While Volkanovski does hold an impressive 26-3 record, Illia Topuria comes in undefeated at 14-0 with 12 bouts ending in stoppages. Since joining the UFC in 2020, he’s racked up six wins, including his most dominant and recent victory coming against Josh Emmett. Full name: Alexander Volkanovski Birthdate: Sept. 29, 1988 (35) Birthplace: Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia Height/weight: 5-6/155 pounds Division: Featherweight (2014-present), Lightweight (2014, 2016, 2023), Welterweight (2012-2013)

Magic/from 2 Random Acts of Silliness has taken various approaches to support people in bringing their lantern visions to life, hosting workshops, commissioning pieces and collaborating with other groups. Workshops provided opportunities for community members to get in the act. In some, adults crafted flowers and butterflies from templates. Kids of all ages also decorated existing globeshaped lanterns to their interpretation of the winter bloom theme. There are lots of flowers, bugs and butterflies, Thompson said, but also a school of fish, a puma and some donuts. Roughly a hundred Montana State University students in their first year of art school teamed up in groups of three or four to build lanterns, guided by Jade Lowder. Rather than give them specifications, Thompson said she asked that the students lean into the feelings they wanted the lanterns to elicit. “Our most important value is they must all be joyful,” she said. Like most of the organization’s offerings, the lantern project is designed to inspire collective wonder and awe. There are many ways to bring out that sort of emotion, Thompson said. Lanterns may be humorous in

their table. As an art teacher, she has led students in decorating premade lanterns with watercolors. And she has a love for origami lanterns made with folded paper. However, the extent of her prior lantern-making experience came from a building kit her mom picked up when she was a kid. Though her background is mainly in photography, clay and textile art, Yonke is diving into the lantern project. Experimenting with new materials and playing in different mediums comes naturally for the art educator, who also coordinates community outreach and education for Tinworks Art. “I love the new challenge,” she

said. “I live for a project, a really good juicy project.” Yonke’s piece is a giant sun, with sunray arms that will move and interact with the lantern and crowd. Its structure includes ski poles and tent poles, a hula hoop, and even a couple deconstructed soccer goals. Thomas Dunning, the designer and fabricator behind Meristem Services, often builds custom display pieces and works on exhibits in galleries and museums that require work to exact specifications. He has enjoyed pushing his creativity with a project that doesn’t demand accuracy to a thousandth of an inch. He has enjoyed the trial and error and the ability to change approach in the middle of the project. “That kind of free-form making is so delightful,” he said. Dunning’s design is a chickadee, with wings operated by a pulley system that rotate around its body. The bird is perfect for a parade that celebrates life in winter, he explained, retaining a “spunky attitude” even when the temperature is at its lowest. Matt Cameron has been working behind the scenes at Random Acts of Silliness from the beginning — in conjunction with his day job as a graphic designer. This will be his first time participating in a larger build with the

organization and he has gone big, designing a queen bee to create a buzz through the parade. His piece uses 12-gauge wire and “lots of wooden skewer sticks as its structure, holding up a massive multi-colored bee with a crown atop its head and color-changing lights. “I wanted to do something pretty memorable, so hopefully I accomplished that,” Cameron said. The final commissioned lantern comes from the team of Erin Corsi, Grace Washko and Sarah Washko from Studio Wheelhouse, a local art space that has also played host to many of the workshops. The trio are working on a sea turtle, a take on the winter bloom theme designed to bring that winter bloom theme designed to bring variety in subject and color to the parade offerings. “It’s such a uniquely creative experience,” Grace Washko said. “Who gets to make a 6-foot turtle lantern?” Studio Wheelhouse was designed to make art more accessible and to bring more creativity into our lives. The collaboration with Random Acts seems to naturally fit into their model. “Random Acts is so good at bringing beauty and magic to everyday things,” Grace Washko said.

subject. They may be really, really big and generate that sort of wonder based on sheer size. They may move in a surprising way, or be beautifully and meticulously detailed. Four large-scale lanterns were commissioned, drawing on local artistic talent. Though most only had rudimentary experience with lantern-building, the artists were tasked with making their lanterns larger than life — at minimum three feet in diameter and with some sort of moving element. Artist Angela Yonke is no stranger to a lantern. When she was a kid, the family always had Japanese lanterns hanging over Montana Native Lily Gladstone.
