Butte hip-hop artist 2 Dolla Will is on a mission to shock, and he appears to be succeeding. To listen to 2 Dolla’s music is to dive headfirst into a confounding torrent of pop culture references; peculiar samples of obscure doo-wop, “Feliz Navidad,” and country radio chatter; paeans to potent cannabis; sexual boasts; and proud but not exactly flattering depictions of Butte. The only thing more audacious than 2 Dolla’s raunchy, reference-rich music is the staggering rate at which he makes it. At age 25, he has already uploaded more than 50 albums to the digital music hosting platform Bandcamp, from

the lush, country-inflected “RED BUTTE REDEMPTION” to the JayZ-referencing “THE BUTTEPRINT” and the jazzier “Butte Chips.” This holiday season proved especially fruitful for 2 Dolla fans. In December he released a bombastic full-length collaboration with the Nashville artist Lord Who titled “I SOLD CRYSTAL METH TO TAYLOR SWIFT,” as well as a shorter holidaythemed project and a handful of singles, including the diss track “YOU PROBABLY WATCH PODCASTS.” His next album arrives in February. 2 Dolla (he declined to share his given name) collaborates with a rotating cast of producers and fellow MCs. While his crew, the Blicky Boyz, all live in Butte, his tracks feature guest verses and beats produced by artists across the country. Read on as the enigmatic rapper waxes insightful on the nature of shock value, his

creative process, critics and more. MTFP: You rep Butte pretty hard. What’s your relationship with the city like? 2 Dolla Will: I moved here when I was 7 or 8. I was in Florida before. Butte is a crazy place. It’s like the Tim Burton version of Montana. Half the people are just walking around drunk all hours of the day. There’s obviously a bunch of meth and all that. It seems like a haunted place. MTFP: If someone comes to visit you in Butte, where do you take them? 2 Dolla Will: Honestly, they’re not missing much [laughs]. My favorite restaurants, pretty much all of them have closed down. Metals Bank, that’s one—go eat in the vault. MTFP: Do your collaborators live in Butte? 2 Dolla Will: The main people that I work with are in Butte. [Producer] jdmasters, we have been friends since

high school. We’ve been making music together probably at least once a week. Sometimes we’ll come out with three or four [tracks] in one day. And then Yung Regis is another one. And Lil Curbstomp, who’s the third member of the Blicky Boys. MTFP: You release so much music. What does your writing process look like? 2 Dolla Will: It really depends. Lately I haven’t been doing as much, but in 2021, I released an ungodly amount of projects. I put out 21 projects in 2021. That’s when I first started getting beats from [producer] Iceberg Theory, too. Every time I’d send him a song back, he’d send me back three more beats. I just became addicted to that. I wanted to hear what he would send me next. So I’d get up … make a quick one. More WILL I 14

“The Rookie” - Season 6 (Feb. 21)

As has long been known, all good things must come to an end, and that’s about to be the case for “The Good Doctor.” The ABC drama begins its seventh and final season Tuesday, Feb. 20, with title star Freddie Highmore putting the final touches on his portrayal of autistic Dr. Shaun Murphy. While such other cast members as Richard Schiff (“The West Wing”), Fiona Gubelmann (“Wilfred”), Will Yun Lee (“Altered Carbon”), Christina Chang (“Live Free or Die Hard,” 2007) and Paige Spara (“Kevin from Work”) will also be back, two have left while two others are joining the show for its concluding stanza. Founding co-star Hill Harper (“CSI: NY”) and Brandon Larracuente (“13 Reasons Why”) are gone. Entering the series are Kayla Cromer (“Everything’s Gonna Be Okay”), a medical student who’s on the autism spectrum, and Wavyy Jonez (“Young Rock”), another medical student who may not be entirely suited to the profession. For Highmore, who also is an executive producer of “The Good Doctor” and has directed episodes occasionally, there still are plenty of aspects to examine with his alter ego Shaun — not the least of which are his first-time parenthood with his wife, Lea (Spara), and his strained relationship with his mentor, Dr. Aaron Glassman (Schiff). Though he also has considerable movie work to his credit, television has been the London, England-born Highmore’s consistent home for some time now. He started “The Good Doctor” immediately after finishing five seasons as the young Norman Bates — the unsettling character famously played as an adult by Anthony Perkins in Alfred Hitchcock’s

chiller “Psycho” (1960) — in the A&E Network prequel series “Bates Motel.” While working on “The Good Doctor,” Highmore also was a star and executive producer of “Leonardo,” a docudrama series about legendary painter Leonardo da Vinci (with that part played by Aidan Turner) that had an American run on The CW. A second season was ordered, but the status of that has been uncertain for a while. However, it’s a good bet that with the well-planted TV roots he has now, Highmore will be back on home screens sooner or later after “The Good Doctor” closes up shop. First ‘Sex and the City’ movie carries the premise along As feature-film spinoffs of television series go, “Sex and the City” is a textbook example of giving people what they want. The popularity of the frank comedy about four female New York friends made it a game-changer for HBO, which presents the first movie (released in 2008) Tuesday, Feb. 20. The company had to know that going the film route with the franchise would be a smart business decision ... particularly after the original show ended, since its devotees likely would leap at more adventures of Carrie, Samantha, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Sarah Jessica Miranda and Charlotte (played again by Sarah Parker and Kim Cattrall in “Sex and the City” Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis). And leap they did, though returning writer-director Michael Patrick King was also wise enough to make allowances for those unfamiliar with the series, largely accomplishing that through an opening-credit voiceover by Parker that quickly brings the stories of all four women up to date (for that time, anyway). Those involve the men in their lives, with Chris Noth, Jason Lewis, David Eigenberg and Evan Handler also reprising their TV roles. Remaining first among equals is the story of Carrie (Parker) and her wealthy beau known as “Mr. Big” (Noth). True love did not run smooth for them in the original version, nor does it here, even as they’re headed for the altar. A case of cold feet is a major factor in what happens, resulting in a great display of what always has been a principal theme of “Sex and the City”: sisterhood. With the way the other women rally around Carrie, it’s no surprise that fans took this movie to heart as they did. The fact that the actresses knew the characters and their relationships so well by then added an extra layer of authenticity that was everything in terms of this story, making the picture a smash hit — even at a length of 2-1/2 hours, which still wasn’t enough for many people. Ray Romano OF NO GOOD DEED ON NETFLIX Q: I’ve heard that Ray Romano is going to do another series. Is that true? A: It is. With “Everybody Loves Raymond” still available regularly on TV Land and IFC, the actor-comedian is working on his newest show, a Netflix sitcom titled “No Good Deed.” He’ll be part of an ensemble cast in the saga of several families who all want to buy the same house, with plenty of complications arising from their vying for the property. Romano isn’t the only well-known series veteran in the show, which comes from writer-producer Liz Feldman, who had an earlier Netflix hit with “Dead to Me.” That program’s Linda Cardellini reunites with her for the new program, which also will feature Lisa Kudrow (“Friends,” “The Comeback,” “Web Therapy”) and Denis Leary (“Rescue Me,” “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll,” “Animal Kingdom,” “The Moodys”). Of course, Romano also has had other turns at the series game. He followed the nine-season CBS run of “Everybody Loves Raymond” with TNT’s critically acclaimed comedy-drama “Men of a Certain Age,” of which he also was a creator and executive producer. Then, he was a star of the HBO recording-industry drama “Vinyl” (which had Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese among its creators and executive producers), the Epix (now MGM+) series version of “Get Shorty” and the then-HBO Max’s seriocomic “Made for Love.” The premiere date of “No Good Deed” had yet to be determined as of this writing, but with the powerhouse names that its cast encompasses, the scheduling of its debut surely will be made known as that time gets closer.

‘Ferris Bueller’ takes his day off on Freeform

BY JAY BOBBIN

Alan Ruck, Mia Sara and Matthew Broderick star in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”

Writer-director John Hughes’s long-popular 1986 comedy “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ” — which Freeform presents Thursday, Feb. 22, and Friday, Feb. 23 — centers on a very inventive teen’s (Matthew Broderick) self-approved vacation from high school. The tale finds Ferris feigning illness so he can enjoy adventures across Chicago, joined by his girlfriend (Mia Sara) and his best pal (Alan Ruck, more recently of “Succession”). The school’s dean (Jeffrey Jones) is determined to catch young Bueller at his own game, setting up a monumental battle of wills that Ferris regularly addresses to the audience (with Broderick, who’s absolutely perfect in the part, often speaking to the camera). Jennifer Grey, Charlie Sheen and (as the teacher who seeks a classroom response from the absent “Bueller … Bueller”) Ben Stein also appear. One of the major credits for Hughes in building the reputation he had for cross-generational movies, this picture will continue to resonate for many years, particularly with young viewers.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF The Great American Race returns! The 2024 NASCAR Cup series is set to get underway this weekend as the 66th annual Daytona 500 kicks off at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, Sunday, Feb.18, with the Great American Race broadcast live on Fox. With a new season comes new opportunities to win, and this year fans can expect exactly that with established names such as Chase Elliot, Danny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney all expected to remain a force on the track. However, when it comes to winning it all, 31-year-old Kyle Larson is in a field of his own as he looks to continue adding more championships to his resume. The Elk Grove, California, native is no stranger to success. Larson put in a dominant performance in 2021, earning himself a 10-win season before going on to win the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Championship. And it seems like Larson just keeps improving on the track each year. During the 2023 season, Larson led a Cup series-best 1,127 laps, earning his second Championship 4 appearance in three years while finishing second in overall standings. While Larson has been finding success on the track, he maintains a level-headed approach, aiming to improve on his mistakes and maintain consistency. “You want to win races and contend for wins and championships and all that,” Larson said, speaking to Hendrick Motorsports. “For me, I want to clean up all the areas where I kind of struggled in ‘23 and throughout my Cup career. I pretty much lead the series in crashing, but I also lead the series in laps led. If we can maintain the good stuff with my style but rein it back a little bit, that would be my main goal. When you can finish more races, you are going to have more opportunities to win and you are going to win more. I think that all compounds.” Full name: Kyle Miyata Larson Birthdate: July 31, 1992 (31) Birthplace: Elk Grove, California Height/weight: 5-6/135 pounds

Will/from 2 MTFP: A full track? 2 Dolla Will: Yeah. It’s like my warm-up. I would be still writing when I was at work. I was a general manager of Butte’s Jimmy John’s. I’d go on my lunch break and finish that song. After my shift, I’d come back and probably do two or three more [tracks]. And then maybe jdmasters would hit me up and be like, “Hey, let’s do something.” So I’ll go up there and do another two. I don’t find it hard to do them quickly. After I come up with a good first couple lines, it goes pretty naturally. I don’t usually go back and rewrite stuff. I’ll usually just lay it down and then — unless it sounds like crap — that’s just the final version. MTFP: Do all of those tracks make it onto a record? 2 Dolla Will: I don’t like to do albums longer than 15 or 16 songs. Usually I’ll have too many songs and I’ll start cutting them off, and then I’ll have another half an album. So then I’ll find a new batch of beats that fits with those and make another album. You’ll have the main album that’s like the really, really good one. And then you’ll have another one that’s for the people that can’t get enough. Like “Susan,” the one I just

All those songs were actually made in 2021 when we were working on “Elaine Benes.” It’s not the polished final product that “Elaine Benes” is — it’s like the booster pack if you need more “Elaine.” MTFP: You’ve got a track where you rap “If Gianforte can bodyslam a reporter’s face and still control the state / how the [expletive] is anything I say in poor taste?” I’d like to unpack that one. 2 Dolla Will: It’s crazy. How do you think legalization is going? 2 Dolla Will: I think it’s awful, to be honest. They’re blowing the prices up. These

corporate-type people are making all the money. MTFP: I love the recorded voice in some of your tracks that says “Go back to Bozeman.” Who is that? 2 Dolla Will: That’s Jeff Steitzer. He is the actual voice in [the video game] Halo. “Double kill,” “triple kill,” all the crosstalk. We paid him to say a bunch of Butte stuff. MTFP: What do you think about Bozeman? 2 Dolla Will: I’m not a fan. It’s like Butte’s evil twin. They’re the people that get offended by the stuff I say, you

know what I mean? MTFP: You talked about the shock value of your music earlier. What do you hope someone takes away from your music? 2 Dolla Will: Honestly, I just hope people hear it and say, “There is no way this guy just said that.” And then go back and listen to it again and be like, “This is actually really dope.” It’s a similar reaction to when I first heard Action Bronson or Big L. I think people get misconstrued that something shocking has to be violent or messed up in some sort of way. But in reality, shock value can be me rapping insane “Seinfeld” references or saying that Michael Bay’s “Transformers” is the real “Citizen Kane.” That’s just as much shock value as anything else I’ll say.
