Relationships are hard. Bozeman therapist and author Julie Menanno wants to help.

Menanno’s book, ”Secure Love: Create a Relationship That Lasts a Lifetime” was released by Simon and Schuster on Jan. 30. It is already a national bestseller, making lists released by USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly. “Secure Love” is designed to augment therapy, or provide a guide to those who do not have easy access to that resource for their own relationship.

“All I’m really doing is taking my passion and experience with couples and just trying to somehow give people out there that can’t be in this room with us a similar experience,” said Menanno, a licensed marriage and family therapist and founder of the Bozeman Therapy & Counseling clinic and The Secure Relationship Coaching. “I know how powerful this work is. I know how effective what I’m doing is with couples. I just really want to bring that to people on a bigger scale.”

If she weren’t so real, I might think that Mennano was Superwoman in disguise. Aside from the commitments with the new

‘Absolutely transformative’

book and with her large family (a husband, six children ages 12-22, and a big lovable dog named Scout), she is still seeing clients. On Tuesday, I met Menanno at home and we chatted over coffee at her kitchen table. Somehow she didn’t feel at all rushed, though she had no less than seven couples sessions scheduled that day. A couple minutes before 1 p.m., she made her way upstairs to her office for the next session with clients.

Next week, Menanno embarks on a UK book tour. She notes that she has help both at work and at home, allowing her to dedicate her time to clients, content creation like the Instagram account or writing, and family. This also leaves time for watching football and experimenting with outward expression through press-on nails.

“Queens” - Season 1 (March 5)

Angela Bassett narrates this new National Geographic docuseries, telling the story of how the wildest places on the planet have always been home to powerful leaders, but this a story of a new hero – fierce, smart, resilient and … female. “Queens” features matriarchies and female leaders around the world to tell a story of sacrifice and resilience but also of friendship and love. These “Queens” aren’t always kind or gentle, letting nothing come between them and the success and safety of their families.

“Extraordinary” - Season 2 (March 6)

Season 2 picks back up with Jen (Máiréad Tyers), following her journey as she enrols as a client at the power clinic. Jen soon discovers that the process of finding her power isn’t as easy as she hoped, and things in the rest of her life aren’t smooth sailing either. Ex-cat, now-boyfriend Jizzlord (Luke Rollason) has had an unexpected revelation about his past, and Kash (Bilal Hasna) and Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) are attempting to be totally mature and dignified about their break-up, which is not easy when they’re still living under the same roof.

Checking in with SCOTT CAAN

“Prometheus” (Available Now)

The discovery of a clue to mankind’s origins on Earth leads a team of explorers to the darkest parts of the universe, with two brilliant young scientists leading the expedition. Shaw (Noomi Rapace) hopes that they will meet a race of benevolent, godlike beings who will in some way verify her religious beliefs, while Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) is out to debunk any spiritual notions. However, neither the scientists nor their shipmates are prepared for the unimaginable terrors that await them.

Scott Caan has been missing lately in more ways than one, but his absence is about to end.

The “Hawaii Five-0” alum returns as his latest series — “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” — begins its second season Tuesday, March 5, on Fox. He’s back as Jason Grant, a Philadelphia police detective who works with his ex-spouse, Missing Persons Unit chief Nikki Batista (Dania Ramirez, “Heroes”); they share a tragedy of their own that keeps them bonded as they try to locate other individuals. Joining the show is Gil Bellows (“Ally McBeal”) in the recurring role of Hollis Braun, the partners’ new supervisor. Also new to the cast is Alisha-Marie Ahamed (“Family Law”), playing an expert hacker who’s under house arrest as she helps the sleuths.

Caan spent 10 seasons in the CBS reboot of “Hawaii Five-0” that cast him as Danny “Danno” Williams, the investigator played by James MacArthur (“Swiss Family Robinson,” 1960) in the original iteration of the show. He also had a recurring role in HBO’s “Entourage,” in which he often appeared during the inside-Hollywood comedy’s final two seasons (and he probably got some tips about doing series work from his late father, since James Caan had been a star of NBC’s “Las Vegas,” ABC’s “Back in the Game” and Starz’s “Magic City”).

However, Scott Caan had made a name for himself in movies before he started TV work regularly. Perhaps most notably, he was a part of the robbery crew in the 2001 remake of “Ocean’s Eleven,” as well as the sequels “Ocean’s Twelve” (2004) and “Ocean’s

Billy Howle also stars.

A ‘Magnificent’ remake that wasn’t really needed

The 2016 remake of “The Magnificent Seven” is quite enjoyable. And quite unnecessary.

The original 1960 Western — inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s Japanese classic “Seven Samurai” — still holds up beautifully, but after three sequels and a TV series that was a modest success for CBS over a couple of seasons, it’s not hard to understand why a studio would return to one of its most famous properties. BBC America shows the most recent version Sunday, March 3.

The story basically stays the same: A town is besieged by a villain (portrayed in this case by Peter Sarsgaard, “Garden State,” 2004) and his followers, and the citizens realize they’ll have to hire defenders. Haley Bennett (“The Girl on the Train,” 2016) plays the woman who spearheads the deal.

First up for the job is a bounty hunter played by Denzel Washington, reunited here with director Antoine Fuqua, who led him to an Oscar in 2001’s “Training Day” (and also worked with him on the “Equalizer” movies). Another collaborator from that film, Ethan Hawke, plays one of the other six — with the rest made up of the likes of Chris Pratt (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” 2014) and Vincent D’Onofrio (“Godfather of Harlem”), each character possessing certain skills that are effective in battle.

And about that battle: You just know a big showdown is coming, and while it’s violent enough, it stayed within the constraints of the picture’s PG-13 rating. Those rules were even tighter for movies in 1960, and if director John Sturges could pull it off then, Fuqua certainly can here.

An updated “Magnificent Seven” is all well and good, but the original remains a wonderful example of filmmaking and storytelling that’s just as rich today. One of the tests of remaking a classic is whether the update supports or diminishes the legacy of the original. This “Magnificent Seven” is perfectly serviceable, so it gets credit for not taking anything away from the allure of the title.

Lisa Ann Walter

Q: It was fun to see Lisa Ann Walter win the latest “Celebrity Jeopardy!” tournament. I know she’s on “Abbott Elementary” now, but what other series has she been in?

A: The actress-comedian seemed the most surprised of anyone that she emerged victorious in the January championship that pitted her against Katie Nolan and Mo Rocca. She has done plenty of guest roles, but her work as a series star dates back to the mid1990s, when she toplined the short-lived Fox sitcom “My Wildest Dreams.” Soon after that, she had another brief run in the ABC comedy “Life’s Work.” In 2001, she starred with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse in NBC’s “Emeril” (which also featured Carrie Preston, now of CBS’ “Elsbeth,” as well as “The Lazarus Man’s” Robert Urich and current talk-show host Sherri Shepherd).

After those, ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” (which premiered in 2021) has been Walters’s steadiest on-camera series job — though she also was a co-creator of the competition series “Dance Your A– Off,” which was shown by Oxygen in 2009-10. Among the many shows for which she has done guest shots have been “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “GLOW,” “Rizzoli & Isles,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Las Vegas” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

“Apples Never Fall” (Peacock — Mar. 14, Limited Series Premiere)

Based on Liane Moriarty’s New York Times bestselling novel, this series centers on the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family. Former tennis coaches Stan (Sam Neill) and Joy (Annette Bening) are ready to start their golden years, while they look forward to spending time with their four adult children (Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner, Essie Randles). But, everything changes when a wounded young woman knocks on Joy and Stan’s door, bringing the excitement they’ve been missing. But when Joy suddenly disappears, her children are forced to re-examine their parents’ so-called perfect marriage as their family’s darkest secrets begin to surface.

“Surrounded” (Available Now)

This western drama follows former Buffalo Soldier Mo Washington (Letitia Wright) as she travels West to lay claim on a gold mine. After her stagecoach is ambushed, Mo is tasked with holding legendary outlaw Tommy Walsh (Jamie Bell) captive and must survive the day when the bandit’s gang tries to free him.

“Strays” (Available Now)

In this odd-ball adventure comedy, after a fast-talking terrier (Jamie Foxx) shows a naive pup (Will Ferrell) that his beloved owner (Will Forte) is a dirtbag, the dogs embark on an epic adventure for revenge. Isla Fisher, Randall Park, Rob Riggle, Josh Gad, Sofía Vergara, Jamie Demetriou, Harvey Guillén and Jimmy Tatro also voice star.

“The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course” (Available Now)

In this action comedy, Aussie adventurer Steve Irwin, aka The Crocodile Hunter, has nabbed another feisty croc, hoping to save it from poachers. What Steve doesn’t know is that the crocodile has innocently swallowed a top secret US satellite beacon, and the poachers are actually American special agents sent to retrieve it. Crikey! Relocating the croc won’t be easy, but if he can handle bird-eating spiders and venomous snakes without getting bitten, gun-wielding agents shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

‘Star Wars’ continues to give ‘Hope’

The Star Wars franchise has held many surprises for its countless fans, one of which was that the first movie actually was the fourth chapter. On Saturday, March 9, FX presents the original trilogy from the George Lucas-created saga — with 1977’s “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” introducing characters from “a galaxy far, far away” that have become only more beloved as time has gone on.

Mark Hamill (“The Fall of the House of Usher”) plays adventurous Luke Skywalker, who responds to an appeal-by-hologram from Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher, “The ‘Burbs,” 1989) as she tries to thwart the sinister Darth Vader (David Prowse of 1971’s “A Clockwork Orange”; voice by James Earl Jones, “Field of Dreams,” 1989) and his scheme to build a Death Star capable of ravaging the universe. The would-be heroes get assistance from maverick smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford, also famed for the Indiana Jones franchise) and his sidekick Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew, “Dark Towers”). Among the picture’s seven Oscars are wins for best visual effects — of course — and John Williams’s iconic music score.

A PWHL Wednesday night doubleheader

The inaugural Professional Women’s Hockey League season continues with a Wednesday night doubleheader on March 6 as Boston travels north to take on Toronto at Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, with the match streaming live on YouTube, while PWHL juggernaut Montreal visits New York at UBS Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut, with all the action broadcast live on MSG.

As Boston looks to remain in the top half of the standings, Hamilton, Ontario, native Sarah Nurse and her Toronto teammates have managed to remain in the mix after winning only three of their first eight games during the league’s opening month. During the slow start in January, Nurse managed a goal and two assists, with Natalie Spooner adding to the goal column with five goals throughout the month — surely something Boston will be looking to shut down.

Meanwhile, New York gets set to take on a talented Montreal squad. Since both teams are loaded with offensive talent, it’s no surprise they were among the top teams in total goals through January.

For Montreal, it comes as no shock that they have been the favorite to win it all, with Marie-Philip Poulin proving why she’s one of the top talents in hockey as she leads her team with seven points, including six goals.

However, if there is a spark that can get things going in the right direction for New York, it’s none other than 26-year-old Canadian Ella Shelton.

Shelton has shown all season long why New York made the right selection, taking her fourth overall in the 2023 PWHL draft. The defender out of Ingersoll, Ontario, has already put up impressive numbers this season, sitting top five amongst all players with three goals, five assists and eight points through January — giving New York a big reason to remain optimistic for season ahead.

Full name: Ella Shelton

Birthdate: Jan. 19, 1998 (26)

I first encountered Menanno more than three years ago through her instagram page, @thesecurerelationship. There, she uses cute bird cartoons and infographics to outline attachment styles and how they present themselves in relationships to her more than a million followers. She creates scripts to help people find the right words to work through their conflicts more effectively. In following her page, my own interactions within relationships (romantic and otherwise) have evolved. I’ve learned how to better regulate, to respond with compassion and understanding based on how these attachment styles present themselves.

Our ability to relate to others shapes not only the course of our lives, but our mental health. Working through conflicts in our relationships in healthier ways, is a healing act.

“When couples can learn how to avoid negative cycles, interrupt negative cycles, and repair negative cycles…what they are really doing is learning how to directly access their vulnerabilities and communicate about them in a more measured way than is possible during escalated fights,” Menanno writes in “Secure Love.”

The “Secure Love” story really starts about 11 years ago, when Menanno decided to go back to

Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples. Though she could have waited a week and started a program near home in Los Angeles, Menanno made plans to travel to Bozeman to dive in right away. She fell in love with the method, with working with couples and with the place.

“I have not taken on another individual client since that day,” Menanno said.

Like the social media page, “Secure Love” offers scripts for interactions and practical advice that help us learn about our own attachment styles, which Menanno believes to be the key to understanding each other.

“I loved listening to you read the audiobook,” I texted Tuesday night. “Your compassion is evident, both in your writing and voice.”

Through it, Menanno hopes that couples are able to find a softer place from which to approach tough conversations, to lean into each other for that security we all so need. It also works for families. Menanno is now confident she is able to provide the emotional support her children need.

“I felt like there was just something I’m not getting about relationships because I didn’t grow up in an environment where I had the healthiest modeling,” Menanno said. “I wanted to give that to my family desperately.”

After earning her Master’s degree in Psychology from Phillips Graduate Institute in Los Angeles, Menanno was focused on completing clinical hours (a therapist must complete a certain number of hours to be licensed).

This includes seeing couples, though she had no interest in pursuing couple’s therapy at the time.

Yet, in her very first couples session, Menanno was struck both by the difficulty of the experience and how much fulfillment it brought her. Working with couples presented a challenge, which Menanno embraced. Instead of simply asking open-ended questions, she was dealing with live emotions. It was intellectually stimulating in a way she hadn’t experienced before.

The couple left the session and within hours, Menanno had found a training program on

Menanno reads the audiobook version, which was recorded over five days in October in New York City. The process was a chance to experience the book front to back in a way that made it feel new.

“I had this bizarre feeling while I was recording it…,” Menanno said. “Like, ‘wow, this book is making me a better person, which is interesting considering I wrote the book.”

“Secure Love” is grounded in empathy and compassion. In

Winner of four prizes including L’Oeil d’Or (Best Documentary) when it screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Four Daughters is a compelling portrait of five women.

Trolls Band Together. Hey,

“We need to start being more vulnerable,” Menanno said. “We need to stop communicating from this protective place. We need to start really truly learning how to be close and connect with others. When you can start bringing this support and safety and connection into your relationship, it starts to take on a life of its own... It’s absolutely transformative.”
