D BOZEMAN DAILY CHRONICLE FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 2024 Collaborators join library program Symphony storytime

New perspectives

For the Chronicle

Storytime was already a popular offering at the Bozeman Public Library, with five on the schedule each week serving a variety of ages. This year, however, storytime has acquired some new partners — the Bozeman Symphony and Montana Shakespeare in the Parks.

For the inaugural Symphony Storytime in January, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks actor Emily Hawkins explained how both she and Sandy Stimson, the symphony’s principal oboist, are taking their own approaches to what is essentially the same material.

“Sandy and I are different kinds of storytellers,” Hawkins explained to the audience.

At the event, Hawkins read “No Two Alike,” a book written and illustrated by Keith Baker

about uniqueness in snowflakes, bird nests, ski tracks and, of course, ourselves. The addition of the oboe helped take her inside the winter wonderland of the storybook, she said.

Stimson immediately asked to be included when she heard of the collaborative storytime.

“I said ‘sign me up,’” she said. “I thought it was the best, most creative thing I’ve heard.”

The oboist chose music to fit with the story, playing short selections of a variety of pieces to heighten the changing moods of the story and ending with a tango written by Mathieu Lussier. She chose the upbeat dance to “get all the kids moving and excited,”

Stimson said. “And plus I like playing it.”

Performing has always been a love, she said.

“I adore it,” she said. “I get so excited sometimes that I’m shaking because I just love performing and I love to play.”

Adding children to the mix only heightened the experience for Stimson.

“They’re so inquisitive and they want to see the instrument up close,” she said. “Their curiosity is delightful.”

After the story, Hawkins expanded on the theme, using ice cream as an example of something most people can agree is delicious, even if our flavor preferences differ.

“We have some people that like chocolate ice cream, some people like vanilla, some people like strawberry,” she said. “There’s a lot of similarities amongst us, but all of those little differences in what you like and you don’t like make us all feel unique and special.

“Freaknik: The Wildest Party

Never Told” (March 21)

This documentary is a celebratory exploration of the boisterous times of Freaknik, the iconic Atlanta street party that drew hundreds of thousands of people in the ‘80s and ‘90s, helping put Atlanta on the map culturally. What began as a Black college cookout soon became known for lurid tales of highway hookups and legendary late-night parties that ultimately led to the festival’s downfall. Rooted deep in its history of Civil Rights, thriving Black leadership, and focus on the uplifting of Black culture and education, Atlanta became the only place a festival like this could grow and thrive.

Checking in with PETER KRAUSE

21)

“Stolen Baby: The Murder of Heidi Broussard” (March

When Heidi Broussard (Anna Hopkins) is ready to give birth, her best friend, Magen (Emily Osment), travels to Austin, Texas, to be by her side. However, when Heidi and her newborn daughter go missing soon afterward, authorities begin to suspect that Magen is hiding a huge secret. Based on the true story of Heidi Broussard.

Peter Krause is still responding to “9-1-1” calls, just in a different place on television now.

After six seasons on Fox, the actor and his castmates have moved their adventure-drama series to ABC for its seventh round, which has just started airing on Thursdays. Also an executive producer of the show, Krause continues his role as Robert “Bobby” Nash, a Los Angeles Fire Department captain having a very memorable – and dangerous – honeymoon with his police sergeant wife Athena (Angela Bassett) aboard an overturned ocean liner, in what the program’s makers have acknowledged is their homage to the 1972 movie “The Poseidon Adventure.”

For Krause, “9-1-1” is the latest of several long series runs that have seen him able to stay with a single role for a considerable period of time without needing to seek employment elsewhere. After a two-season run as a co-anchor of a fictional sports-news show on ABC’s “Sports Night” (1998-2000), created and produced by Aaron Sorkin (“The West Wing”), Krause spent five seasons as a member of a funeral-home-operating family on HBO’s seriocomic “Six Feet Under” (2001-05). The latter show earned him many award nominations, including for three Primetime Emmys and two Golden Globes.

Krause’s next series stop was ABC’s “Dirty Sexy Money” (2007-09), on which his character succeeded his late father as the attorney for a vastly wealthy New York family headed by a couple played by Donald Sutherland and Jill Clayburgh. Following that came another lengthy engagement for Krause on “Parenthood” (2010-15), marking the second time NBC attempted a series inspired by the Ron Howard-directed 1989

“My Hero Academia: Two Heroes” (March 22)

All Might (Kenta Miyake) and Deku (Daiki Yamashita) visit I-Expo, the world’s leading hero item exhibition, but a sinister plan is set in motion when villains hack the security system.

movie; Krause portrayed one member of the multigenerational Braverman family.

“9-1-1” began in 2018, and ABC clearly saw advantages to adding the show to its schedule (though Fox is retaining the spinoff series “9-1-1: Lone Star,” slated to return next season). And the happy news for Krause is that his regular paychecks for weekly TV work, which he has collected for some time, are continuing.

Melissa McCarthy is ‘The Boss’ as star and co-writer

Who’s “The Boss?” Well, in movie terms in 2016, the answer to that was fairly easy: Melissa McCarthy.

The “Mike & Molly” and “Gilmore Girls” alum’s film career has been an ever-fluctuating series of hits and misses ever since she struck the bullseye with her marvelously bawdy, Oscar-nominated work in “Bridesmaids,” but it’s a thrill to see her still riding reasonably high ... especially, in some cases, with projects she generates for herself.

“The Boss” — which Freeform presents Thursday, March 21, and Friday, March 22 — was one of those, and as with “Tammy” a couple of years earlier, she also was a co-writer of it with husband Ben Falcone, the film’s director. She plays a self-actualization guru who gets into legal trouble and goes to prison, then has to take a sizable dose of her own medicine and rebuild her life once she gets out.

She’s helped in several ways by her former assistant, played by a winning Kristen Bell, who’s smart for knowing and grabbing a good supporting role when she sees one. There’s a lot of business about humanizing McCarthy’s Michelle Darnell, and that lets the actress put some spins on the image she has cemented through her television work.

The rest plays out a lot like Diane Keaton’s “Baby Boom,” with Bell giving McCarthy the incentive to get back into the business swing by marketing a certain product in a unique way. While the premise may be familiar, it’s the McCarthy twist that provides the difference, reaffirming the natural talent that elevated her from the supporting ranks to her current status in stardom. Remaining likable to an audience, even when your alter ego does some not-so-likable things, is a gift.

Q: I enjoyed Hilary Swank’s newspaper drama “Alaska Daily.” Why did it have such a short run?

A: The main answer is the one that applies to so many shows that don’t last long … ratings. ABC expectedly wasn’t shy about promoting that it had a double Oscar winner as the star of one of its shows, and the high hopes for it were evident from its getting a slot on Thursday, a night anchored by one of the network’s biggest and most enduring hits, “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Though there was some response from critics and viewers alike to the theme of the plight of Indigenous women in Alaska, that didn’t translate into a wider audience, with a significant dip in the numbers after the show’s premiere. It likely didn’t help that the series had an extended hiatus that saw it go off the air in November 2022 and not return until March 2023, which had to have impacted any momentum it might have been building. The back half of the lone season of “Alaska Daily” proved interesting for another reason. At the point she filmed those episodes, Swank was pregnant with twins, though her journalist character Eileen Fitzgerald wasn’t expecting. Therefore, the actress was filmed creatively, using angles that concealed her condition — with head-and-shoulders shots, scenes of her captured from a distance, or views of her wearing bulky clothing.

What ultimately was the series finale set up “Alaska Daily” to continue if ABC opted for that, but it wasn’t to be. The last episode aired at the end of March 2023, and the cancellation notice came when the next season’s lineup was announced that May.

‘Tootsie’ remains full of laughs and truths

One of the great contemporary movie comedies, “Tootsie” — which MGM+ presents Thursday, March 21 — is very smart and genuinely funny, while also being an incisive look at the challenges often faced by those in the acting profession. Certainly, not everyone goes to the extent of Dustin Hoffman’s character to land and keep a job in front of audiences, but there’s still plenty of truth to the humor that’s involved.

Hoffman plays Michael Dorsey, a struggling performer trying to help a friend (Teri Garr) land a role on a daytime-television serial. When she doesn’t get it, he decides to pursue it himself ... as “Dorothy Michaels,” disguising himself to convince others that he’s a woman, and one capable of playing very conservative new hospital administrator Emily Kimberly. The charade prompts a series of great one-liners from Bill Murray as Michael/”Dorothy’s” perplexed roommate. Director Sydney Pollack’s 1982 film earned an Oscar for Jessica Lange as a co-star of the soap of whom Michael is quite enamored; the cast also includes Dabney Coleman and Charles Durning.

Formula One returns down under for the 2024 Australian Grand Prix

Round 3 of the 2024 Formula One season gets underway as drivers make their way down under for one of the fastest courses on the calendar. The Australian Grand Prix kicks off Friday, March 22, and runs through Sunday, March 24, at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Australia, with practices, qualifiers and race day all broadcast live on ESPN [US]/TSN [CA].

With a new season comes new challenges, and for the Visa Cash App RB Formula One team, formerly known as Red Bull Racing’s sister team, AlphaTauri, expectations are certainly higher. RB Formula One made great steps forward in the off-season, including upgrades to the newly branded VCARB 01 front and rear suspension and a gearbox from Red Bull, with the hopes of making some significant progress on the grid.

Following the release of driver Nyck de Vries last summer, RB Formula One was able to provide 34-year-old Daniel Ricciardo the opportunity to make his return to F1, proving to be a solid choice with Ricciardo going on to earn the team’s best finish last year — a seventh at the Mexican Grand Prix.

The team looks to make big strides this season and with Round 3 about to get underway, Ricciardo is keeping expectations realistic with the hopes of reaching the top five a few times this calendar year — if all goes to plan.

“You have to aim high, but being in this sport for so long, you want to remain as realistic as possible as you don’t want to end up ultimately disappointed,” said Ricciardo, speaking to F1.com. “Top-five finishes should be the target, and if we get in that position, maybe some podiums present themselves. Of course, we want to win, but, you know ... I think we made steps last year, let’s make a few more steps.”

“Do I think top-five results are on the table — and could they be on the table in the first half of the season?” Ricciardo continued. “I’d like to think so.”

Perspectives/ from 2

Hawkins had arrived in Bozeman a few days prior and immediately launched into rehearsals for the Montana Shakes! spring tour, which will travel to 60 elementary schools by mid April. Working with children inspires her imagination, and the book played into the necessity of leaning into the characteristics that make us who we are as people and as artists.

“It’s really lovely, you know, talking about everyone’s own uniqueness and what makes you you and how none of us are exactly alike,” Hawkins said. “I think those values, especially with young minds, are really cool.”

Hannah Jacobsma, the director of community engagement for Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, said Wallace was incredibly thoughtful in finding a story that connected so well with the spring show “Goofs, Gaffes, Flubs & Fumbles.”

“It’s about expressing yourself and dancing to the beat of your own drummer and celebrating the uniqueness and the greatness,” she said.

Our uniqueness is also the source of our ability to work together creatively, to bounce ideas off one another and learn from each others’ strengths. It is

the reason collaborations like this are possible, Hawkins said.

“As an actor, performer, it’s all about constant collaboration and getting as many voices in the room as possible,” she said. “To have the symphony working with the Shakespeare company is really great just to see all kinds of perspectives in storytelling.”

The idea to collaborate with the library on storytime came from the symphony’s music director Norman Huynh, who ran similar programs with the Oregon Symphony, according to Cierra Wallace, the symphony’s new education and community engagement

“We do songs and rhymes and books,” said Amy Cory, who works in the children’s area of the library. “And then we just pick a few different activities. Sometimes there’s a theme and sometimes not. But we try to get all their different senses going in the story time.”

“What we’d really love to do is start creating programming for every age range,” she said.

The Symphony Storytime is a step toward that goal and Wallace was thrilled to see it come to life in a room filled with children.
