‘Shadowed World’
RACHEL HERGETTFor the Chronicle
Completed in 1891, two-story house at 234 E. Mendenhall St. in Bozeman, was built by Joseph Lindley with funds provided by Nelson Story. And it was built to be a brothel.
The men’s thinking, you learn on the tour for the new Extreme History Project exhibit, “Illuminating the Shadowed World of Bozeman’s Historic Red-Light District,” was that in order for Bozeman to be in the running
as the home of the state capital, the town needed a proper two-story parlor house brothel.
“This building has a really extreme history,” Crystal Alegria, the executive director of The Extreme History Project, said during a recent exhibit tour. “So it fits really well with us.”
The Extreme History Project’s exhibit “Illuminating the Shadowed World of Bozeman’s Historic RedLight District” is on
display in the organization’s headquarters at 234 E. Mendenhall St. in Bozeman. Hour-long exhibit tours are offered on Tuesdays at 11 a.m., Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 1 p.m. through the spring. The exhibit will be up for about a year. For more information on the exhibit and other historical tours, visit https:// extremehistoryproject.org/.
“The many tours you can take are kind of fun,” said Dave Parker, who sat in on the exhibit tour with wife, Margot. The other participant was Kelly Simmons, a writer who met Alegria through a writing group. She has heard stories about exhibit subjects Lizzie Woods and Libbie Hayes and her sisters, and hoped the tour would fill in some of the plot holes.
Louisa Couselle and Louisa “Frankie” Buttner. Couselle and Buttner both died in the 1880s, and worked out of a building that was torn down to make way for the parlor house brothel. The Extreme History Project’s exhibit focuses on later history and especially those who worked in the house the organization now calls home.
“I am fascinated,” she said. Bozeman was founded in 1864, and many have heard names of earlier madams like Kitty Warren,
At the time, this was the middle of Bozeman’s red light district — a small footprint with a large impact on the young town. The district was mainly confined between Rouse and Bozeman avenues to the east and west, Mendenhall Street to the north and the alley between Main and Mendenhall streets to the south. If one wanted an opium den, a brothel or saloon, this was the place to find one.
“This was where all the vice happened,” Alegria said.

“Vanderpump Villa” - Season 1 (April 1)

It follows the elite staff as they try to provide luxurious, once-in-a-lifetime experiences for guests while dealing with the rivalries, romances and raucous misadventures that come from working and living together 24/7.
“American Horror Story: Delicate”
- Part 2 (April 4)
Returning with Part 2, this installment of the horror anthology series from Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk is adapting its story from Danielle Valentine’s book “Delicate Condition.” While the series is notoriously close-lipped about plotlines, the book’s synopsis may provide viewers with a peak at what is to come. Emma Roberts, Cara Delevingne, Matt Czuchry, Michaela Jaé (MJ) Rodriguez, Kim Kardashian, Julie White, Debra Monk and Annabelle Dexter-Jones star.

“Anatomy of a Fall” (Available Now)
In this Oscar winner, Sandra (Sandra Huller), her husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) and their young son Daniel (Milo Machado-Graner) live a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, the police question whether he was murdered or committed suicide. What follows is not just an investigation into the circumstances of Samuel’s death but an unsettling psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel’s conflicted relationship.
There may not be much that’s supernatural about it, but Jared Padalecki’s current series is giving him another healthy television run.
A reboot of Chuck Norris’s long-running “Walker, Texas Ranger,” The CW’s “Walker” is one of the few shows that has survived under the network’s new ownership. With its fourth season beginning Wednesday, April 3, Padalecki continues to executive produce the series as he returns to his role as the title lawman whose widower-father status gives him much to deal with beyond the crimes that he and his Austin-area associates set out to solve.
Continuing co-stars include Mitch Pileggi (“The X-Files”) and Molly Hagan (“Herman’s Head”) as Walker’s parents; Violet Brinson (“Sharp Objects”) and Kale Culley (“Black-ish”) as his children; Keegan Allen (“Pretty Little Liars”) as Walker’s brother, Liam; Odette Annable (“Supergirl”) as his girlfriend, Geri; and Coby Bell (“The Game”) as his ex-partner-turned-Texas Rangers chief. Appearing on a recurring basis is Padalecki’s wife, Genevieve (“Supernatural”), as Walker’s late spouse.
How much longer “Walker” will last is a real question, given The CW’s known aim of reducing production costs, but current programming president Brad Schwartz — who maintains “Walker” has attained that goal — has indicated that Season 4 might not be the end of the show if its ratings continue to perform well. Even if it does go on, though, it would be a very long shot to speculate that it will last as long for Padalecki as “Supernatural,” which ran for 15 seasons, the first being on the then-WB Network, then the other 14 on The CW.
Padalecki’s familiarity and popularity with that outlet’s audience allowed him to move directly from “Supernatural” into “Walker,” but
“Poor Things” (Available Now)
Based on the Novel of the same name, this four-time Oscar-winning film tells the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
it also didn’t hurt that the Walker character’s name was well established with viewers from the earlier Norris show, which ran for eight seasons. Time will tell whether the current “Walker” still has years to go, but Padalecki can keep calling The CW his TV home for now.

BY JAY BOBBIN‘Spider-Man’ makes a swing overseas
Let this be said right up front: Do not stop watching “Spider-Man: Far From Home” before the end credits are over.
Hopefully, FX will leave them at full-screen size when it shows the 2019 film as part of a “Spider-Man” marathon Sunday, March 31. If you do walk away too soon, you’ll miss a major twist, and one that certainly was vital to the next movie in the series (2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which will be shown immediately after this). This film is quite enjoyable, and with all the Spidey stories there have been, it still relies on the basic and familiar premise of our young hero battling the monster du jour.
In this case, it’s really multiple monsters, which take various forms as Peter Parker and his pals embark on a school trip through Europe in the aftermath of the events of “Avengers: Endgame” ... and the picture is wise in changing the setting, since “Spider-Man” typically has been an all-American venture. The group’s first stop is Venice, which barely survives (though some might argue that it doesn’t) an attack by the so-called Elementals — and then, Prague scarcely fares any better.
“Elementals” is a pretty clever name for the bad guys, since they take in the characteristics of such elements as water and fire, and in extremely big and destructive ways. Of course, that lets the special-effects team have a field day, generating some whoppers of visuals given the creative freedom that computer-created imagery enables.
Tom Holland hits more of the right notes in this turn as the web-slinger, whether the young hero is trying to woo Mary Jane (played by Zendaya) rather clumsily or scoping out a would-be mentor who comes to be known as Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal, another example of the fun casting of known “guest stars” - see Michael Douglas, Jeff Bridges, etc. — that the Marvel movies delve into).

BY JAY BOBBINSusan Kelechi Watson
Q: Such a big deal was made about Susan Kelechi Watson of “This Is Us” joining “Will Trent,” why was her character killed off in the season premiere?
A: Though it wasn’t known before that episode aired in February, the ABC series had a specific purpose for making that move as it pertained to Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent Trent (played by Ramon Rodriguez) going forward. He and Watson’s explosives-expert character Cricket Dawson established a connection quickly, and it seemed that it would proceed rapidly from the professional to the personal, since they were planning to go on a date. What ultimately happened prevented that social occasion from happening, since Cricket didn’t have enough time to disarm a bomb that had been planted in the bureau’s parking garage. She was killed by the explosion, which she had tried to contain in a room within the garage … and her death added to the pain that Will already was trying to handle from other situations, including the murder of his biological mother and the strain of his complicated relationship with police detective Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen).
Though she might not be a lasting physical presence on “Will Trent,” then, Cricket still has a place on the show as a spectre destined to continue to haunt Will as he makes his way through the show’s sophomore round. The addition of the character did its job for the brief time Cricket was around, since that season-opening episode achieved a ratings high for the series up to that point – not an easy thing to achieve in its Tuesday time slot against another crime procedural, CBS’ well-established and much-watched “FBI.”

BETH BOYSON Library columnistAt Bozeman Public Library, the picture book collection is hugely popular. It’s an introduction to reading that most people remember very fondly: The Berenstain Bears, Goodnight Moon, Pat the Bunny, Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss, Maurice Sendak; these are the enduring giants of the picture book genre. There are times however, that a picture book is challenged, or a request is made to remove it from the Library’s circulating collection. That request may result in the book being banned. Maybe you read about the record number of challenges made against school and public library books in 2023?
In an effort to inform people
about this process and some of the titles constantly challenged across the United States, Bozeman Public Library presents a Banned Picture Books discussion. We’ll get together to read a few picture books aloud and talk about the themes and responses to these specific books as well as the arguments made for or against their inclusion in library collections. This is an opportunity for community members to engage with books that have been challenged and banned
elsewhere and express your opinions on the content. Please note: this program is for adults. You do not need to read the books beforehand. You may not agree with either the challenges or the themes presented in the books, but we hope every participant is open to a civil discussion regarding the books chosen for that evening. The Banned Picture Books discussion will take place Monday, April 1, 6:30-7:30 in the Cottonwood room on the 2nd floor. For more information, please call

I never could have imagined when we started ‘Blackish’ that this is where the character would end up. So I’m very thankful and just happy with where he’s gone, and I’m like, ‘OK, it’s time to say goodbye.’”

“The Antisocial Network” (April

“Parasyte: The Grey” (April 5)
This Korean sci-fi thriller draws inspiration from legendary manga “Parasyte” by Hitoshi Iwaaki. At the center of the story is Su-in (Jeon So-nee) as she grapples with her newfound coexistence with a parasite. The series also tracks the efforts of “Team Grey,” a group dedicated to fighting mysterious parasites that live off humans.
“It is really good fun. It’s very different for Sally Wainwright. She’s put political intrigue, sprites, magic, lots of fighting, highway robbery, and Regency England in a big pot, gave it a stir and out came an amazing idea. It is really good writing and I have a really good time being bad.” - Adrian Lester, star of “Renegade Nell”
“It wasn’t just about the connection to my own Jewishness, but also being able to explore a role that touches on my own ancestry, it’s very personal. It takes on a new meaning. A lot of roles I’ve had in the past and hopefully continue to take on in the future, I’ve been able to connect with in a special way. But when a show’s subject matter is that personal to your own history and your own family, it’s even more special.” - Star of “We Were the Lucky Ones,” Joey King

‘Easter Parade’ steps off again
There’s no date better than Sunday, March 31, for Turner Classic Movies to show “Easter Parade” this year, placing it right on the holiday. The channel traditionally gives a seasonal run to the 1948 musical treat that boasts an Irving Berlin score as it casts Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Ann Miller as performers whose career choices largely are dictated by their romantic ties, past and present.
Astaire plays a Broadway star whose partner both on and off the stage (Miller) is pursued for her own project, so he seeks someone to replace her, choosing a chorine (Garland) and trying to give her a makeover that will turn her into a virtual clone of the Miller character. Eventually, he lets her be herself, but matters of the heart interfere with how successful they might be … both personally and professionally. Peter Lawford also stars in the film that includes “Steppin’ Out With My Baby,” “It Only Happens When I Dance With You” and (of course) the title tune on its soundtrack.

BY ROBERTO JOZEFSaka and the Gunners continue their title chase against Manchester City
Two of the English Premier League’s top teams face off in a highly anticipated match, with both clubs continuing their title chase, when Manchester City hosts Arsenal at Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England, Sunday, March 31, broadcasting live on NBC.
In what has shaped up to be the English Premier League’s closest title race in years, Manchester City and Arsenal have remained neck and neck in the standings all season long, with the Gunners walking away from their last meeting with a slim 1-0 victory. While Gunners star forward Bukayo Saka wasn’t able to contribute in the previous matchup against Manchester City due to injury, he has been on fire since his recovery, sitting Top 10 in both goals and assists, proving not only his value but his versatility and consistency as a high-end attacking threat in football.
Winning the EPL Player of the Month award in February, Saka and Arsenal went undefeated through all of February. However, against an elite Manchester City attacking squad, the Hale End graduate will need to be in top form in his team’s search for its first league title in 20 years.
For Manchester City, it will be looking to win its fourth consecutive league title, a feat that’s never been achieved, with Erling Haaland leading the EPL in goals, and additional contributions from Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez, all leading the team in scoring and sitting Top 20 in goals in the EPL.
While Manchester City may be favored to win it all once again, this season the team has the highest rate of conceding goals off their opponents’ first shot on target, having let in 28 goals in 28 games, something the Gunners will surely look to take advantage of — especially as they lead the league with 70 goals for and counting.

Law enforcement liked that these activities were contained, she explained. and the ladies in their big houses on Willson Avenue could sleep a bit easier knowing a brothel was unlikely to open next to their stately homes. In its heyday, the red light district was home to nine brothels, with an estimated 4 or 5 women working out of each house. Though violence and addiction ran rampant in the area, according to Alegria, it also provided a means for around 40 women to support themselves.
Here we learn about Libbie Hayes, who lived and worked in the house from for about 10 years, sometimes alongside sisters Hattie and Mattie, until she saved enough to buy the two houses on the lot next door in 1912. She died the next year of uterine cancer.
“There’s a lot of sad stories in this district,” Alegria said.
The exhibit also covers Lizzie Woods, who built her house down the block in 1886, and lived and worked in it until her death in 1918.
Alegria called Woods the “queen of the underworld,” as well as an often savvy businesswoman intent on making money. Woods operated a saloon out of her “place,” paying a fee of $84 every three months, according to records. She bought and sold real
estate, including a building on Livingston’s Main Street with 17 rooms on the top floor that were rented to boarders.
Woods was known for brandishing a revolver and was fined and charged after shooting at a group of would-be peeping toms and hitting one in the shoulder. She was also charged with “white slavery” after convincing a 14-year-old she met in a train station to journey to Bozeman as a companion for her daughter. But when that girl, Maude Ross, realized what was actually happening, she went to the sheriff.
The Mendenhall Street house was a brothel from 1891 to 1918. Now stuccoed, the building originally sported a brick exterior. Inside, visitors were greeted in a grand parlor and led to rooms in the back or up the large wooden staircase. Corner blocks on the trim feature carved doves with their tails lifted, which are speculated to represent the “soiled dove” term for the sex workers of the time. Most are reproductions, modeled after two that remained over a door leading into the building from the parlor.
The room houses the exhibit’s cases filled with artifacts like shoes and jewelry, bottles and a spittoon.
“You’ll learn too about the harsh realities these women lived with including drug addiction, violence and early death due to overdose, disease or suicide,”
according to the Extreme History Project’s website. Historical documents provided much of the basis for the exhibit, though this sometimes leaves an incomplete picture. No one, for example, knows what the building was called at the turn of the century.
“I know that this building had a name, but we’ve never been able to figure out what it was,” Alegria said.
Many brothels were referred to as “so and so’s place,” such as “Liz Wood’s Place” which stood on the southwest corner of Mendenhall Street and Rouse Avenue.
Another piece that may be lost to history is what the women who worked in Bozeman’s brothels called themselves. While today, “sex workers” is the preferred term, did the women at the turn of the 20th century consider themselves “prostitutes” or some of the more euphemistic terms in popular use at the time — “sirens,” “harlots” or “soiled doves?”
Alegria sees connections between the building and the overall history of Bozeman. There are players like Lindley and Story, but the area is also tied to some of the namesakes of the streets that surround it. John Bozeman’s house was nearby, and he connects the history to the town’s cofounders, Daniel Rouse and William Beall.
“It’s such an important part of town,” she said. “We can tell a lot of stories from this place.
