Fresh update

RACHEL HERGETT For the Chronicle

“The Glass Menagerie” is a rarity for The Ellen Theatre. On a stage that usually sees complex set pieces and musicals with large casts and choruses, the four-person piece by Tennessee Williams is intimate, exposing both the characters and stage itself.

“I don’t think anyone will have seen a show look like this one does in this space,” actor Colton Swibold said when I stopped by the theater on Tuesday to chat about the play, which opens Friday, April 5.

Swibold moved from Missoula about five years ago and has been a regular on the Ellen stage in shows such as “Damn Yankees,” “You Can’t Take it with You,” Fiddler on the Roof” and numerous productions of the seasonal classic “A Christmas Carol.”

Seated in the front row, it was easy to see what Swibold was talking about in terms of the space. Nothing is hiding. There are no curtains impeding the view from the front of the stage to the doors leading into the alley. Audience members can peer into the wings and up to the ceiling, creating a rare openness that is buoyed by the theater’s new fly system, installed last summer. The modern update of the old manual hemp rope and pulley system used to bring in lights and set pieces is now incredibly streamlined (and mechanical). Now, the architecture of Bozeman’s grand old lady of a theater, which opened in 1919, is on full display.

“We’ve exposed the bones of the theater,” director Connor Berkompas said. “We’ve created this meta theatrical environment for the story to be told, because it is a memory play, and Tom is conjuring his memory for us.”

“The Greatest Hits” (April 12)

“The Channel” (April 12)

When a bank heist goes wrong, a desperate criminal, his out-of-control brother and a motley crew of ex-Marines must escape from New Orleans and a determined FBI agent. Clayne Crawford, Max Martini, Juliene Joyner, Jaren Mitchell and Nicole Banks star.

It’s been a big decade for Kelsea Ballerini since she launched her professional career, and she’s marking it in a big and appropriate way.

The Academy of Country Music Awards and Country Music Association Award-winning star returns for the fourth consecutive year — going solo in the job this time — as host of the CMT Music Awards, which CBS and Paramount+ present Sunday, April 7, from the Moody Center in Austin, Texas. No stranger to such events in recent years, either to preside over the given occasion or perform at it (or both), Ballerini is nominated for three of the honors herself: video of the year and CMT performance of the year, both for “If You Go Down (I’m Goin’ Down Too),” as well as female video of the year for “Penthouse.”

Ballerini began performing very early, taking up dancing when she was 3 years old and starting to write songs at age 12. She made a record label deal at 19, and it didn’t take long for her to make CMT’s Next Women of Country list after she issued her first single, “Love Me Like You Mean It.” The tune went to the top of Billboard Magazine’s country chart, making her only the 11th solo female country artist to accomplish that with her debut single. She then made history again by also hitting No. 1 with her followup single, “Dibs.”

The fast-rising status Ballerini attained in the music world got added confirmation when she joined NBC’s “The Voice” for its 15th season in 2018, as she was made a fifth coach — the first time the contest had added such a slot — and returned to the show during Season 20 in 2021. A few months later, Ballerini was inducted by Carrie Underwood as a member of the legendary Grand Ole Opry, and she went on from that to stage her successful Miss Me More Tour in 2019. She also head-

Harriet (Lucy Boynton) finds art imitating life when she discovers certain songs can transport her back in time – literally. While she relives the past through romantic memories of her former boyfriend (David Corenswet), her time travelling collides with a burgeoning new love interest in the present (Justin H. Min). As she takes her journey through the hypnotic connection between music and memory, she wonders – even if she could change the past, should she?

lined her Heartfirst Tour in 2022-23, and she has toured with such other acts as Keith Urban (“Blue Ain’t Your Color”), Kelly Clarkson (“Stronger”) and Kenny Chesney (“When The Sun Goes Down”). Ballerini’s popularity and fame have only grown with time, and her being given this year’s CMT Music Awards to front on her own is definite proof of that.

Sean Connery’s James Bond spies ‘From Russia With Love’

Just as most people have their favorite screen James Bond, most have their favorite James Bond movie. For many purists, “From Russia With Love” ranks extremely high on the list. Being shown by Cinemax on Thursday, April 11, the 1963 caper came close on the heels of Sean Connery’s debut as Agent 007 in “Dr. No” ... and much of the appeal of the second round rests in the actor’s cool confidence in a role he grew into very quickly. There’s also satisfaction for Bond devotees in the film being one of the most literal adaptations of a novel by Ian Fleming, since gadgetry began to compete heavily with story starting with the follow-up, “Goldfinger.”

Though Bond — or someone we think is him — appears in the pre-credits sequence that became a standard Bond element with “From Russia With Love,” it actually takes a while for him to enter the picture in full. Early scenes are devoted to introducing various villains such as Rosa Klebb (Lotte Lenya), she of the poison-tipped knife concealed in her shoe, and impressively strong henchman Red Grant (Robert Shaw, 12 years before his “Jaws” turn as Quint).

They’re in on a plot to discredit Bond by luring him with a much-coveted decoding machine, then filming him while he’s being seduced by one of their allies (played by Daniela Bianchi). A problem is that she genuinely falls hard for our hero, of course, leaving her loyalty in doubt until the moment when it counts the most.

While “From Russia With Love” has many highlights, the culmination of a tense trip aboard the Orient Express surely is among the best. Returning from “Dr. No,” director Terence Young stages a train-compartment fight that’s as brutal as it could be, and it has held up very well over nearly 60 (!) years. The helicopter and boat chases that follow also continue to stand up nicely.

Q: With some streaming series getting additional runs on regular TV lately, will Sylvester Stallone’s “Tulsa King” also be one of them?

A: As a matter of fact, yes. CBS announced at the end of February that the Paramount+ drama’s first season will get a broadcast run this summer (a premiere date hadn’t been specified at the time of this writing), and its move to the broadcast network side wasn’t necessarily a sure thing before that news was confirmed, since it seemed such deals largely were being made to help fill gaps created by Hollywood-strike-related production shutdowns last year. However, it makes total sense that “Tulsa King” would also get such treatment, for multiple reasons.

First is the outcome CBS had from running past seasons of Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone,” which proved to be a considerable ratings success. That had been a question mark going in, since no one knew for sure how the Kevin Costner-starring show having already run elsewhere might impact the size of the audience for it on CBS. The gamble paid off, with a sizable number of viewers evidently sampling the saga of the Dutton family for the first time in its broadcast afterlife.

Then, as with Costner in “Yellowstone,” there is the star power of Stallone. He is bound to be a considerable draw for CBS, whether or not those tuning in already have watched “Tulsa King” in its original home … and particularly for those who haven’t seen it yet, big curiosity should exist about how Stallone fares in a series role. Having the first season widely available on CBS also should whet appetites for Season 2, which is expected to start production for Paramount+ in the near future.

And there’s an urgency to what she does because it’s really about self-preservation. She’s someone who doesn’t have any agency, any autonomy. She doesn’t have any authority or power except through the men she’s married to, or through her male children.” - Julianne Moore, star of “Mary & George”

We’re off to see ‘The Wizard of Oz’ again classic corner

Of all the films that still enchant viewers of all ages, “The Wizard of Oz” ranks very high on the list. The 1939 fantasy based on L. Frank Baum’s book is one of the shiniest gems in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer library, so it’s no surprise that Turner Classic Movies is including it as part of a 100th-anniversary salute to the studio. The picture — which earned Oscars for its overall score and the Judy Garland-performed song “Over the Rainbow” specifically — runs Monday, April 8.

Generations continue to regale in the adventures of Dorothy Gale, Garland’s character who is whisked from a Kansas farm — along with her dog Toto, of course — into a magical land where she makes fast friends with the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion (Jack Haley, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr). More than one young viewer has been alarmed by the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) and the Flying Monkeys, but this movie remains an essential element of many people’s childhoods.

It’s the first major of the 2024 PGA season and one of the most anticipated events in the world of golf, as players get set to tee off April 11-14 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, with one round airing each day. The first two rounds broadcast live on EPSN and rounds 3 and 4 broadcast live on CBS.

Coming off what was an exceptional 2023 season, 29-year-old Jon Rahm won his second major of his career and earned his first Green Jacket, finishing with a four-stroke victory at the 2023 Masters, putting on a dominant and consistent performance against formidable foes in Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka. Heading into this year’s Masters tournament, the Spaniard could potentially be the first back-to-back champion since the great Tiger Woods in 2001-2002.

With his recent Masters victory, as well as his 2021 U.S. Open victory under his belt, Rahm has shown tremendous poise, maintaining a consistent form throughout the majority of his career, displaying a proven ability to excel under pressure and solidifying himself as one of the top golfers heading into this year’s tournament.

While Rahm’s recent play has etched his name as a top contender this season, the competition will be as tough as ever with the likes of world No. 1-ranked Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick all aiming to get a crack at winning their first major trophy of the year.

The 2024 Masters is set to be a thriller, as Jon Rahm looks to become the first repeat champion since Tiger Woods.

Tom, played by Swibold, acts as the narrator as we dive into his memories of the months before he left home for the merchant marines. Through them, he examines his guilt at leaving his mother and sister to follow his need for adventure in his life. “The Glass Menagerie” centers on his recollections of the family’s interactions. We see how his mother, Amanda, can feel domineering in her desire to positively impact the lives of her now adult children. We see the protectiveness he feels for sister Laura, especially when their mother insists she needs “gentlemen callers.”

The play is an American classic, oft read and examined in high school classrooms. That does not mean, however, that it feels dated. The idea of a memory play contrasts with the prevailing naturalistic style of the time, allowing the creators and audience to use their imaginations to find the essence of the characters and their emotions. Even today, Connor said, realism and naturalism are the prevailing theatrical forms.

“People are still playing with forms today, and there’s physical theater and musical theater, all these things are still happening, but when you look at all the new plays that are being written, there’s still a ton of kitchen sink dramas,” he said, describing the classic stage set up with a fridge and couch and family gathered

Connor, the founding artistic director of Nervous Theatre, said the Tennessee Williams classic immediately felt like the right project to tackle when the idea came up in conversation with the Ellen’s executive director, John Ludin.

“It seems to live in the cross section of what I would normally direct with a company like Nervous Theater, and then something that the Ellen Theater audiences would be familiar with,” Connor said.

The last three Nervous Theatre productions have been a departure from text-driven works, often exploring movement and physical space. “The Glass Menagerie,” though still expressive in its silent moments, is a “wonderfully text-heavy play,”

of fantastical creatures that roam the wizarding world and discover the magical cast of characters in pursuit of them.

“At first I was thinking, ‘Okay, what can we cut? What can we take out? How can we find physicalized things?’” he said. But most of the play remains. “For as poetic as (the language) is, it’s also very precise, and it’s very lean.”

While a definite, bleak ending is often implied, Connor said that this production focuses on the possibilities. What could life look like for these characters trying to weather the depression and find places for themselves in this world?

“Amanda is so full of adversity and hope,” said actress Susan K Berkompas, calling her character’s strength and resolve to make her own future “invigorating.” “She has every reason to just crawl into a hole, and she just keeps going.”

Susan has lived in most of the state’s bigger cities, listing Helena, Billings and Missoula alongside her hometown of Great Falls. Now chair of the theater program at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, California, she is no stranger to Williams’ work. In 2007, she took on the role of Blanche in “A Streetcar Named Desire” in the inaugural production of the American Coast Theater Company which she helped found. Susan called Amanda “the role of a lifetime” and touted the playwright’s ability to dig into deep emotional wells and probe their intricacies, a rarity for men of that era.

“There’s just this very specific way he writes for women, the detail and the heartbreak,” she said.

In “The Glass Menagerie,” her daughter Laura is played by Annabella Joy, a dancer and voice teacher as well as a founding member of Nervous Theatre. Recent projects include “A Marvelous Party,” “Strange Mating Calls” and “Mommy’s Dead And They Buried Her In Moscow.”

the play is Tom’s story or Amanda’s story, because the bulk of the lines fall to them.

“But you forget about Laura,” she said. “And, wow, I really came to learn that it’s all about Laura and she is the hope and then the drive of tomorrow and it’s beautifully devastating and wonderful at the same time.”

Rounding out the cast is the “gentleman caller,” Jim, played by Gabriel Taurman. A Bozeman High School and New York University graduate, Taurman has performed with Nervous Theatre, The Ellen Theatre and Bozeman Actor’s Theatre, and toured with Montana Shakespeare in the Parks schools’ tour. Though he appears later in the action, Jim seems to be an antithesis to the others in his acceptance of his own life, though he offers Laura plenty of advice for hers.

“I think one of the beautiful things about every character in this play is that they’re all trapped and they’re all just trying to get by,” Swibold said. “You cannot blame them for anything that they’ve done as much as you want to.”

Roux. Elsie Arbour has taken great care to document what fairies are, the anatomy of a fairy, the life cycle of a fairy, and their habitat. This book was discovered in the archives of the British Museum of Natural History. Makes sense, right?
