Celebrating the abilities of Katy Rose Caplette

‘I Am Everything I Am’

“One of the most beautiful things about being Rose’s mom,” Jenna Caplette said over coffee at the Bozeman Community Food Co-Op in March, “is I never knew who was going to show up every morning.”

Each day, she would wait for daughter Katy (Catlin) Rose Caplette to come down the stairs, wondering what persona she would choose. Would it be John Travolta? Would it be a character she created?

“Her sense of play was huge,” Jenna said.

Rose died of heart failure on Aug. 1, 2022, at 40 years old. “Most people with Down Syndrome don’t live past 40,” doctors had said. Jenna hoped that they were wrong.

Now, Jenna has channeled

some of her grief into creating a means to showcase her daughter’s creativity. “I Am Whatever I Am” is an open house/exhibit showcasing Rose’s work. It will include more than 20 drawings, along with video and sculptures and will take place at at Eagle Mount in Bozeman from 4:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. Speakers on slate at 6 p.m. are therapist Eugenia Funk, art coach Phillip Zemke and Rose’s mom, Jenna. Florence Guest will debut songs she wrote with Rose, accompanied by violinist Silas Rea. CDs will be available. Guests will be able to order prints of the art, or take home free coloring pages.

“It’s really hard, but I’m so grateful that she left me this project, even though she wasn’t leaving it for me,” Jenna said.

Checking in with MICHAEL DOUGLAS

“Blacklight” (April 18)

Travis Block (Liam Neeson) is a government operative coming to terms with his shadowy past. When he discovers a plot targeting U.S. citizens, Block fnds himself in the crosshairs of the FBI director he once helped protect.

Michael Douglas has certainly done his share of movie work, encompassing Oscar wins on both sides of the camera, but he’s also not averse to returning to the home screen.

The son of fellow Hollywood icon Kirk Douglas (“Spartacus,” 1960), Michael had made some films before he largely built his fame on the 1970s ABC police drama “The Streets of San Francisco,” and his honors have included Academy Awards for producing “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975) and acting in “Wall Street” (1987). Now, he’s back to series work by depicting the life and achievements of Benjamin Franklin in the Apple TV+ series “Franklin,” which is streaming new episodes each Friday; he is also an executive producer of the biographical drama.

If it seemed that movies would have Douglas’s services exclusively after he left “The Streets of San Francisco” (for which he was Emmy-nominated three times) a year before its run ended, he demonstrated otherwise by hosting NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” in 1984 and also appearing in specials. He also executive produced a mid-1980s ABC series based on the movie “Starman” (he was an executive producer of the film as well) and guest-starred on NBC’s “Will & Grace.” On top of all that, he also took his first role as Benjamin Franklin in the 2003 PBS series “Freedom: A History of US.”

However, Douglas’s major return to TV was the 2013 HBO project “Behind the Candelabra,” for which he won a Primetime Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award (among other accolades) for his portrayal of the entertainer Liberace. After that, Douglas tackled a series role again in the Netflix comedy-drama show “The Kominsky

Method,” casting him as an actor-turned-acting coach. He earned another Golden Globe for the program, which reunited him with such previous movie colleagues as Kathleen Turner (“Romancing the Stone,” 1984) and Douglas’s close friend Danny DeVito (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”).

Now, “Franklin” is challenging Douglas as he plays a legendary figure who actually lived, something he rarely has done in his career — and that he has taken the mission seriously goes without saying.

True, lethal diplomatic crisis plays out over ‘13 Hours’

When the name Benghazi comes up, it typically sparks controversy, given the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Libya ... the aftermath of which resulted in the deaths of four Americans, and became a major political issue.

The movie “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi” tries to keep the politics out as it re-creates the effort by American forces to defend the compound. The 2016 film – being presented Sunday, April 14, Thursday, April 18, and Friday, April 19, on Paramount+ With Showtime – was guided by one of the top action directors around, Michael Bay, of “Transformers” and “Armageddon” fame, and he clearly wanted to focus on the action that occurred under the circumstances.

Still, it’s hard to overlook the politics completely here, since questions arose about Washington leaders’ readiness (or lack thereof) for such a situation. Indeed, the soldiers portrayed in the film are shown going against orders to stand down, relying instead on their own skills and instincts. The cast includes some familiar faces, such as Toby Stephens (“Black Sails,” “Die Another Day”) and John Krasinski (“The Office,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), but it purposely plays down overt star power to try to enhance the realism of the dramatization.

And it is a suspenseful story, in the tradition of so many that have pitted heroes against seemingly insurmountable odds … the type of tale director Bay has vast experience in telling. One problem, though, is the film’s length; it occupies nearly two-and-a-half hours, and though that certainly isn’t as bad as 13 hours, it does feel overextended when at least a half-hour less would make the film that much tidier and perhaps give it even more impact.

Ryan Gosling OF BREAKER HIGH ON UPN/YTV celebrity q&a

Q: Someone told me that Ryan Gosling was a child star on television. Is that true?

A: It is, though he ultimately limited his home-screen career so that he would be considered for dramatic roles in movies, which he feared his TV fame was interfering with. He tried out for a mid-1990s version of “The Mickey Mouse Club” and landed the job, being cast along with Justin Timberlake (who reportedly became a good friend of his at the time), Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. He relocated from his native Canada to Orlando, Fla., for that two-year gig.

After that ended, Gosling went back to Canada and found work on such shows as “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” and “Goosebumps,” and he had a leading role in the comedy-drama series “Breaker High.” He then went to New Zealand for the title part in the show “Young Hercules,” which was the project that made him decide to pursue a different direction with his career, largely since he wanted to play a variety of roles.

Gosling’s agent parted ways with him, but the actor still secured parts in such movies as “Remember the Titans” (2000), “The Believer” (2001), “Murder by Numbers” (2002) and “The United States of Leland” (2003). He really cemented his place as a film star with the 2004 hit “The Notebook,” which teamed him with Rachel McAdams (with whom he had a personal relationship after the filming). After that, Gosling continued to focus on feature films almost exclusively. Somewhat ironically, his next one is a reboot of a TV series, “The Fall Guy”; it’s slated to be in theaters in early May.

‘The Sixth Sense’ remains unsettling classic corner

Bruce Willis has had many box-office successes from overt action tales on the order of “Die Hard,” but he also had an enormous hit by playing it more subtly in “The Sixth Sense,” the 1999 melodrama that FX shows Monday, April 15. The movie also did much for the careers of young co-star Haley Joel Osment and M. Night Shyamalan, the writer-director from whom major story twists have been expected ever since.

Willis plays a psychologist working with a child (Osment) who maintains that he sees deceased people, and they behave as if they’re still among the living. The boy reminds the doctor of a previous patient (portrayed by Donnie Wahlberg) he feels enormous guilt over, so he continues to work with the youngster – and to try to communicate with the spirits himself. Toni Collette, Olivia Williams and Mischa Barton also appear in the hugely effective chiller.

Los Angeles Dodgers host division rivals San Diego Padres

The 2024 Major League Baseball season is in full swing as the star-studded Los Angeles Dodgers host the new-look San Diego Padres Sunday, April 14, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. As both teams get set to wrap up their first regular season series matchup, all the action broadcasts live on ESPN.

In what has already been a thrilling start to the season, the Dodgers are hoping to continue their dominance going into this year after coming off their fourth consecutive 100-win full season, becoming the first MLB team in history to accomplish the feat.

Playing for a team that already has the post-season in mind, Los Angeles superstar Mookie Betts is coming off one of the best seasons of his career in 2023, hitting a career-high 39 home runs. He led the league in leadoff homers with 12 and finished second in voting for the National League Most Valuable Player, while missing only 10 games and earning his seventh MLB all-star selection.

Meanwhile, the Padres are hoping to build up some momentum after last season, which saw the team miss the playoffs and part ways with superstar outfielder Juan Soto and Cy Young winner Blake Snell on the heels of an underwhelming year.

With the Dodgers boasting a highly talented team — featuring three former league MVPs — it leaves no doubt that, on paper, they are the favorites to win it all, but not if their National League West rivals can spoil the party.

Full name: Marcus Lynn “Mookie” Betts

Birthdate: Oct. 7, 1992 (31)

Birthplace: Nashville, Tenn.

Rose/from 2

The event is presented by Dancing Drum studios, which is a name that honors Rose’s American Indian heritage but is also a bit of a comic nod to her Down Syndrome. Late in life, when Rose started to mumble more (and before Jenna started wearing hearing aids) Jenna misheard her daughter when she mentioned the disorder. Rose, especially, did not like the diagnosis. She rarely acknowledged it. So it was rare she brought it up. And when she did, Jenna seemed to hear “Dancing Drum” rather than “Down Syndrome.”

Rose was in the process of changing her first name from Catlin to Katy, like one of her favorite musicians, Katy Perry. Plus, the change would clear up confusion over her first name, pronounced like “cat,” not “Kate.” In our conversation, Jenna most often referred to her daughter as “Rose,” so we’ll use that here.

An enrolled member of the Crow tribe, Rose was also gifted two more names “Sees The Two Rainbows” and “Speaks With Her Colors”

Around Bozeman, Rose was a familiar face. Her mother owned Visions West downtown, and Rose grew up around the store. Though she was a couple years older, we went through the same Bozeman schools, starting with Hawthorne Elementary School. Later, she would often be spotted riding her three-wheeled bike. Everyone knew Rose.

“She was fiercely alive,” Jenna said. “She liked to stir things up, which really sucked, right? But it was also really wonderful.”

Rose loved to dress up, living life in costumes, capes and sparkly crowns and tiaras. While she now misses them, Jenna did not share Rose’s love for crowns. She

feared people’s reactions, wishing Rose would choose conformity rather than singling herself out.

But Rose didn’t care. If her mom didn’t want her to wear crowns, she would store them in her backpack until safely on the Galavan on her way to her job at Reach.

Jenna tried to contain her daughter’s energy, while simultaneously loving it.

“That was our dance,” she said.

Jenna and Rose spent most of the pandemic lockdowns at home together, where Rose had her own office space. Without social outlets, Rose busied herself creating a new magical world to explore. Here,

That’s Not My Name by Megan Lally. This suspenseful novel concerns a teen who wakes up on the side of a road with no memory of how she got there, or who she is. Meanwhile, one man claims she is his daughter Mary, and far away, a young man faces murder charges because his girlfriend named Lola is missing. Be More Yoda by Christian Blauvelt. I always thought Yoda was full of wisdom. He taught about balance, inner calm, and a mindful life: There is no try, only do. In this book, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Luke Skywalker have lots to say, too. These lessons can also help teens master a chaotic life in a galaxy very close to home.

people are superheroes, often imbued with powers related to the four elements. They are able to bring on the winds, or make the sky rain fire.

“But super-heroes, oh, man, they have thoughts,” Rose told Jenna when asked about her work. “They can see, they can do anything they feel like doing.”

Character sketches in brightly colored markers showed each person’s powers. Each included a character name as well as an idea of who could take on the role — including Rose herself.

In all, Rose made 71 portraits. “I Am Everything I Am” will include just over 20.

Daniel in the Lions’ Den by Christin Ditchfield. The classic Bible story of Daniel, a kind and wise man who loved God above all, is retold with bright, contemporary-style illustrations. Preschoolers will love the look of this new Little Golden Book as well as the timeless tale of devotion. One in a series of Little Golden Books. Little Raccoon by Peggy

Each is grounded with a bit of beadwork that recalls Rose’s heritage.

Though confined to one house in the pandemic, Jenna had tried to maintain her distance. While she did purchase some new Sharpie markers, Jenna didn’t know the extent to which Rose was using them.

“I had no idea she was doing this because I was doing my best to give her space during COVID,” Jenna said. “So it’s been a surprise, some of it, how rich of a collection this is.”

For many of her characters, Rose also made videos. Some will be shown at the open house.

“She dressed up for each part,” Jenna said. “I have to get to where I know the characters well enough to be able to ID them in the videos, because she doesn’t. And I’m not there yet.”

Plus, Jenna admits, she doesn’t quite have the courage to watch them. She is still discovering the facets that made up her daughter’s world. The Dancing Drum project is still a work in progress, with more to come. And Rose may remain a bit of an enigma, remembered through her art if not fully known.

“This work is important because so many times people with disabilities are unseen, except when we have an event like Special Olympics,” event collaborator Linda Griffith stated in an article Jenna wrote for Bozeman Magazine. “Look what we’re missing by not seeing what Rose was able to create, and then multiply that by all the people with disabilities across the world who are marginalized.”

“I Am Everything I Am,” celebrating the art of Katy (Catlin) Rose Caplette, is at Eagle Mount, 6901 Goldenstein Lane in Bozeman on Saturday, April 13, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
