On slate for summer
RACHEL HERGETT
For the Chronicle
There’s little I love more than Montana’s summer music scene, where we are treated to countless opportunities to get lost in the music while breathing the fresh air, taking in the scenery or looking up at the stars. Both homegrown and musicians passing through pepper summer lineups. As we’re heading into that season, I’ve come up with a round-up of sorts to help you sort through your options.
RAPPIN’ THE RIVERS
A newer festival on the radar, Rappin’ the Rivers, https:// rappintheriversmt.com/, is presented by Nickel Barney’s
No Coast Entertainment on Aug. 16 and 17. Barney has been unwavering in his drive to bring more hip-hop and electronic dance music to the area for decades. Rappin’ the Rivers takes place at the Bridge outside Three Forks (technically Cardwell), the same venue as Headwaters Country Jam and namesake Rockin’ the Rivers. I plan to check it out for the first time this summer, drawn by acts such as Talib Kweli, Brother Ali and even Mickey Avalon, which is a bit of nostalgia from my college years. The lineup also features Cordel Drake, Dizzy Wright, Mac Lethal, Kottonmouth Kings and Filth and Foul.
SWEET PEA FESTIVAL
AND SLAM
And, more recently, SLAM, www.slamfestivals.org, a festival focusing on only local artists, has taken over Bogert Park on the same weekend. A lineup will be announced closer to the festival.
MONTANA FOLK FESTIVAL
One festival I rarely miss is Bozeman’s annual Sweet Pea Festival, https:// sweetpeafestival.org, which takes over Lindley Park on the first weekend of August, this year Friday, Aug. 2 to Sunday, Aug. 4. Local promoter Grant Gilmore has been in charge of the music for years and I have to applaud his taste. I can’t forgo an opportunity to talk about March Fourth here, formerly known as March Fourth Marching Band. Based out of Portland, Oregon, where you may happen upon them creating a parade all their own down the street, March Fourth is part circus act, part swampy horns and entirely entertaining. The music here doesn’t ever fit into one genre, though Americana acts seem heavily favored this year. The schedule includes appearances by Dustbowl Revival, John Craigie and Po’ Ramblin Boys. I’m also excited to see Rayland Baxter, who played the Elm last year, on the lineup.
Even with what I consider a large scope of musical influences and knowledge, when I look at the list of performers announced for the Montana Folk Festival,
https://montanafolkfestival. com, in Butte from July 12 to 14, the only one I recognize is Sam Platts, who I have written about here. Big names aren’t the draw for this festival. Instead, I go for the variety of folk acts from around the world that showcase their talents throughout the weekend. This year’s lineup promises delights like Mississippi delta blues, Puerto Rican bomba, Metí fiddle and Ethiopian accordion plus Spanish flamenco, traditional Hawaiian and Zuni dancers. And because the festival is free (though donations are always appreciated), it’s easy to visit for an afternoon or make a weekend of it and stay for all three days.

“Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” (June 7)
“Clipped” (June 4)

“Queenie” - Season 1 (June 7)
Based on the bestselling novel by Candice Carty-Williams, this drama series follows Queenie Jenkins (Dionne Brown), a 25-yearold Jamaican British woman living in south London, who finds herself straddling two cultures a feeling like she doesn’t fit into either. After a messy breakup, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places and begins to realize that she has to face the past head-on before she can rebuild a better life.
Jeremy Renner is resuming his current series, but for quite a while there, the question of whether he’d be able to.
“The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou” (Available Now) Celebrate the 20th anniversary of this Wes Anderson adventure comedy, in which renowned oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) and his crew, Team Zissou, set sail on an expedition to hunt down the mysterious, elusive, possibly nonexistent Jaguar Shark that killed Zissou’s partner during the documentary filming of their latest adventure. They are joined on their voyage by a young airline copilot (Owen Wilson), a pregnant journalist (Cate Blanchett), and Zissou’s estranged wife (Anjelica Huston). The cast also includes Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Michael Gambon, Noah Taylor, Seu Jorge and Bud Cort.
On New Year’s Day 2023 near his Nevada home, Renner was hit by a snowplow that he saved his nephew from being injured by. Renner sustained blunt chest trauma and more than 30 broken bones from the incident. He was in a hospital’s intensive care unit in critical condition, but returned home after two weeks to continue his recuperation, then started to walk again roughly three months after the accident.
By January of this year, Renner was ready to resume production on “Mayor of Kingstown,” the Paramount+ drama that starts streaming its third season Sunday, June 2. Also an executive producer of the show — created by Taylor Sheridan and series co-star Hugh Dillon (both of “Yellowstone”) — Renner stars as Mike McLusky, an ex-convict who’s at the forefront of his family’s efforts to maintain peace among the various factions of their Michigan town.
with JEREMY RENNER
Contraband distribution and Russian mobsters are among McLusky’s chief problems as “Mayor of Kingstown” returns, and so is someone he knows from his time in prison. Though Oscar winner Dianne Wiest (“Bullets Over Broadway,” 1994) has exited the series as the McLuskys’ matriarch, Paula Malcomson (“Ray Donovan”) is among new cast members, with Michael Beach (“Dead Boy Detectives”) now a show regular as police captain Kareem Moore.
Restarting “Mayor of Kingstown” has been Renner’s first professional commitment since his accident, and though he also has the role of Hawkeye in Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, he has said that he
wanted to see how his health and energy were from making “Mayor” again before deciding on any other career plans. (His 2023 Disney+ documentary series “Rennervations” had largely completed production before his mishap.)
For now, it’s something of a miracle that Renner is back as “Mayor of Kingstown,” given the extent of the injuries he suffered … and it’s sure to be a welcome sight for his fans.

BY JAY BOBBINTom Hanks does multiple jobs in ‘That Thing You Do!’
Courtesy of a music group named The Wonders, which didn’t actually exist, the fans of “That Thing You Do!” are many as it nears its 30th anniversary.
Written by co-star Tom Hanks, who also made his directing debut on the film, the 1996 musical-comedy — currently streaming on Hulu — charts the rapid rise and equally fast fall of a small-town 1960s band that hits it big after the suddenly necessary replacement of its drummer, played by Tom Everett Scott. He sets a new beat for the group, literally, and their locally popular single (which shares the movie’s title) zooms up the charts as a result.
That’s thanks to a savvy talent agent (Hanks) who steers The Wonders on a path that many actual music acts of the era followed ... appearing in a concert tour, in a “Beach Party”-type movie, and on an “Ed Sullivan Show”-type variety series. Hanks clearly has a deep affinity for that era, since all of those events are depicted with loving authenticity that’s warmly nostalgic at the same time it’s knowingly amusing.
The other Wonders are represented superbly by the rest of the main cast: Steve Zahn as the wry guitar player who maintains a healthy skepticism about what’s happening to all of them; Ethan Embry as the naive bass player
Liv Tyler and Tom Hanks in “That Thing You Do!”
who’s happy to go along simply for wherever the ride takes them; and Johnathon Schaech as the moody, hyper-serious songwriter and and singer and guitarist. Liv Tyler is charming as the latter’s girlfriend, who travels with the band as the members’ “wardrobe mistress,” though she’s principally their prime cheerleader.
Much of the music (cleverly evoking familiar ‘60s hits) for “That Thing You Do!” was composed by Adam Schlesinger, the later “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” maestro who very sadly became an early casualty of the coronavirus pandemic. Hanks also had a big hand on composing the soundtrack, which ranges from bouncy tunes to sentimental ballads, and even to the theme of the aforementioned TV variety show that enjoyably features Hanks’ late “Bosom Buddies” partner Peter Scolari as host “Troy Chesterfield.”

BY JAY BOBBINKelly Clarkson
Q: Will “The Kelly Clarkson Show” continue to broadcast from New York, rather than return to Los Angeles?
A: Apparently so, since Clarkson – who initiated that switch of coasts last year, to satisfy her personal wishes – seems quite happy to be based in the Big Apple now. It was part of an overall strategy that also involved a very noticeable change in her physical appearance, and it certainly hasn’t harmed her ability to get big-name guests. That might have been more of a challenge if the original relocation that had been considered, to Montana, had taken effect.
The move also hasn’t harmed Clarkson’s ability to accept other work, which she has proven in recent months by hosting NBC’s “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” special, and she’ll also be a big factor in the NBC Universal networks’ coverage of the Summer Olympics. From an award standpoint, “The Kelly Clarkson Show” remains a contender, since it and its host are Daytime Emmy nominees again. (They have won those honors both of the past two years.)
It all amounts to quite a progression for Clarkson, who was a novice to the entertainment business when she became the first “American Idol” in 2002. She certainly got plenty of practice in being in front of cameras during press rounds for that show, then later as she promoted her music. She also became a TV staple all over again as a mentor and judge on the NBC singing contest “The Voice,” and she was a host of such events as the Billboard Music Awards … all amounting to experience that convinced those in charge of the syndication arm of NBC Universal that she was ready to host her own weekday show (which began in 2019). And the rest, as they say, is history.

“I had met him [Jim Henson] briefly. I knew people who knew him very well, who held him in such high esteem. He was a very modest guy. But at an immediate first glance, I still didn’t realize the scope of what he had accomplished in his 53 short years — far too short. And so I was curious about this sort of explosion of creativity and what was the engine behind him and it? And I knew he was passionate about his work; everyone knew that. But I didn’t know where this kind of outlier mentality came from, combined with this extraordinary amount of work.”

‘American Graffiti’ brings the early ‘60s back strongly
For one of the most entertaining doses of nostalgia that the cinema has offered, “American Graffiti” fits the bill completely. Being shown by Turner Classic Movies on Sunday, June 2, director George Lucas’s 1973 comedy focuses on several California high schoolers … some of whom have just graduated and aren’t quite sure about their futures. Curt and Steve (played by Richard Dreyfuss and Ron Howard) supposedly are leaving for college the next day, but Curt develops second thoughts, largely fueled by his sighting of a mysterious blonde motorist (Suzanne Somers).
The fabulous ensemble cast also includes Paul Le Mat, Charles Martin Smith, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips, Bo Hopkins, legendary disc jockey Wolfman Jack and Harrison Ford – the latter becoming even more famous for filmmaker Lucas as Han Solo and Indiana Jones later. Fans of music of the story’s era will be delighted with the soundtrack choices, encompassing many of the pop hits of the time (which went into a soundtrack album that sold quite well).
A ‘Thorn’ in their side: Portland takes on
North Carolina in an NWSL matchup
Things are getting heated in the National Women’s Soccer League as the sixth-place North Carolina Courage make the trip to Providence Park in Portland, Oregon, to play the fourth-place Portland Thorns. Be sure to catch all the action Saturday, June 8, when the game airs live on ION. With five straight wins under their belt (at press time), Thorns forward Sophia Smith looks to keep up the momentum and continue pushing her team up the NWSL standings. Smith has been with the Thorns for the entirety of her career, being drafted first overall by the team in the 2020 NWSL College Draft. The 23-year-old has proven to be a major player for the team, picking up both league and championship MVP honors on the way to the Thorns’ 2022 NWSL championship victory. This season, Smith leads the NWSL with 28 shots on target in eight games.
On the other side of the pitch, the Courage have lost four out of their last five games as of the time of writing. Hoping to turn their fortunes around, team captain Denise O’Sullivan leads the Courage into enemy territory Saturday, June 8, when they face the Thorns. Tune in to ION for all the action, airing live.
