Final tour

O’Toole takes on new role with MSIP

A culmination

As Montana Shakespeare in the Parks prepares to hit the road on its summer tour, actor and new associate artistic director Riley O’Toole can’t help but reminisce on the more than 600 performances and 10 tours he has already taken with the company.

For O’Toole, this summer promises to be his last on the road — at least for the time being.

“It’s never out of the question,” O’Toole said, pointing to

local actor and musician John Hosking’s turn as King Lear in the eponymous play. Hosking, then a senior theater major at Montana State University, signed on for MSIP’s first full tour around the state in 1974 and last toured with the company in the summer of 1982 before taking on Lear in 2022 for the 50th anniversary season.

MSIP will begin their summer tour, taking “The Winter’s Tale” and “Hamlet” to 65 communities across the state and beyond, beginning June 12.

The idea of a final tour would be “super bittersweet,” if not for

the new position, O’Toole said. In an interview on Tuesday, he marveled over the nighthawk that stopped to watch him give his final speech as Puck in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” He talked about how he intends to savor the traditions he has made on tour, meals at out-of the way burger joints, early morning hikes near Silvergate, the “secret mission” in Sidney that involved Dairy Queen’s Dilly Bars, or the dip in the Madison River that is a baptism of sorts into the company.

What’s Available NOW On

“Origin” (June 10)

Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Ava DuVernay, this film chronicles the tragedy and triumph of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) as she investigates a global phenomenon of epic proportions. Isabel experiences unfathomable personal loss and love as she crosses continents and cultures to craft one of the defining American books of our time. Inspired by Wilkerson’s New York Times bestseller “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.”

“Wreck” - Season 2 (June 11)

In Season 2 of this dramedy horror series, Jamie (Oscar Kennedy) and his misfit friends are on the run, and it’s do or die as they infiltrate a mysterious wellness festival — but it’s going to be the total opposite of a healing experience.

“Brats” (June 13)

In the 1980’s a number of coming-of-age films — including “St. Elmo’s Fire” (1985) and “The Breakfast Club” (1985) — took the pop culture world by storm, with the young actors in the cast of such movies being labeled the “Brat Pack.” As this new wave of ‘80s teen film connected with young audiences in a way that have never been achieved before, the actors in the Brat Pack found their careers and their lives being shaped by the label for decades. Directed by Brat-Packer Andrew McCarthy.

Joe Mantegna is pleased that “Criminal Minds” is still evolving.

Though CBS canceled the popular mystery series in 2010, it returned in 2022 in the form of the continuation “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” which has just started streaming its second season with new episodes debuting Thursdays on Paramount+. Mantegna’s David Rossi and his fellow profilers in the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit must again deal with serial killer Elias Voit (Zach Gilford, “Friday Night Lights”), who manages to get himself placed in federal custody — translating into a new set of problems that the BAU team has with him.

Paget Brewster (“Community”), A.J. Cook (“The Virgin Suicides,” 1999), Kirsten Vangsness (Pretty the Series”), Aisha Tyler (“Archer”) and Adam Rodriguez (“CSI: Miami”) also return to the cast, and Mantegna is enjoying the freedom that being on a streaming service is allowing them.

“It’s a full hour with no commercials, and there are no restrictions, really,” Mantegna says. “On a show like ours, that gives it more realism, because there are things you can say and do that you couldn’t do on broadcast TV.

“Considering the nature of what our show is about, it isn’t surprising that you’d see David Rossi swear once in a while,” adds Mantegna. “We’re able to tell the story in more of a serialized form now, too, and I think people who are hooked into that really like it. Everything feels positive, and we’re hoping for a Season 3, so we’ll see where this takes us.”

“Camden” (Available Now)

Set in Camden, London’s beating heart of music, this documentary reveals the untold stories of how the lives and careers of some of the world’s most iconic artists were influenced by this corner of the city. Through archive footage, observational filming and interviews, viewers experience Camden’s rich history, hearing from world renowned musicians as they relive their Camden experiences. Featuring Dua Lipa, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Noel Gallagher, Little Simz, Yungblud, Questlove, Pete Doherty and Carl Barat of The Libertines, Mark Ronson and more.

“Zach Gilford did, too,” Mantegna notes. “He hadn’t directed before, but he was ready, and he did a wonderful job.”

Felicity Huffman (“Desperate Housewives”) is a notable acting addition for the sophomore round of “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” in which Mantegna has enjoyed directing again, something he also did several times on the original series. Fellow stars Cook, Tyler and Rodriguez directed new episodes as well, as did someone else in the cast.

Movie credits include: “Cars 2,” “Valentine’s Day,” “Lonely Street,” “The Last Hit Man,” “Witless Protection,” “The Simpsons Movie,” “Nine Lives,” “Liberty Heights,” “Boy Meets Girl,” “Celebrity,” “Thinner,” “Albino Alligator,” “Up Close & Personal,” “Eye for an Eye,” “Forget Paris,” “Airheads,” “Baby’s Day Out,” “Searching for Bobby Fischer,” “Body of Evidence,” “Bugsy,” “Homicide,” “Queens Logic,” “Alice,” “The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone,” “Things Change,” “Suspect,” “Weeds,” “House of Games,” “Critical Condition,” “Three Amigos,” “The Money Pit,” “Compromising Positions” Other television credits include: “Criminal Minds,” “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders,” “Gun Stories,” “As We See It,” “The Simpsons,” “Barry,” “The Starter Wife,” “Spenser: Small Vices,” “Thin Air,” “Walking Shadow,” “Joan of Arcadia,” “First Monday,” “The Rat Pack,””The Last Don,” “A Call to Remember,” “Frasier,” “Fallen Angels,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Twilight Zone,” “Simon & Simon,” “Archie Bunker’s Place,” “The Greatest American Hero,” “Bosom Buddies,” “It’s a Living,” “Soap,” “Elvis”

Beatles fans can believe, somewhat, in ‘Yesterday’

Say that George, John, Paul and Ringo never united, and that an entire catalog of some of the best-known songs of all time never existed.

That would be just like “Yesterday,” which is the title not only of a Beatles classic, but also of an entertaining fantasy based on the conceit of a world without the group. Driven by two top talents, director Danny Boyle and writer Richard Curtis, the 2019 tale — which FX shows Monday, June 10 — posits a 12-second blackout in which everyone’s memory of the Fab Four is wiped out. Almost.

Lily James and Himesh Patel star in “Yesterday”

Only one struggling musician, played nicely by Himesh Patel, remembers the Beatles and their tunes ... and he decides to “introduce” and claim the songs as his own. That results in the character ultimately having an ethical crisis as the public marvels at his creative genius, which of course is really the genius of others. It also yields some moments of inspired humor, as when Ed Sheeran (playing himself) suggests that a certain Beatles song would be better with the slightly altered title “Hey Dude.”

The thing about “Yesterday” is not to oversell it. It’s a pleasant diversion, helped also by good acting turns by Lily James and “Saturday Night Live” alum Kate McKinnon as the hero’s manager and agent, plus a funny cameo by James Corden. However, the humor of writer Curtis typically works best when one doesn’t approach it with huge expectations (though he readily admitted that the story idea here was someone else’s, and he then was brought in to script it).

If you think back to “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” and even “Notting Hill” and “Love Actually,” the Curtis touches evolved organically. And often, they were small moments that sometimes can be noticed only upon multiple viewings.

Chances are very good that it will be the same for many people with “Yesterday”; its concept of “no Beatles” is quite a bit to grasp initially, and that probably will be the overriding journey for most moviegoers the first time around. However, the smaller strokes — particularly those involving the relationship between Patel and leading lady James — seem likely to be recognized more upon second and third (and beyond) screenings.

Q: I enjoyed seeing Josh Brolin host “Saturday Night Live” recently. Has he ever had a TV series of his own?

A: That March appearance – which was meant to promote his presence in the movie “Dune: Part Two” – actually was the third time that James Brolin’s fellow-actor son hosted the NBC late-night staple. Having the popular Ariana Grande as the episode’s musical guest surely was a boost in terms of viewership.

Though Brolin’s work principally has been in feature films, he was a television-series regular in several instances early in his career. Not long after he made his movie debut in the enduringly popular “The Goonies” in 1985, he co-starred in the short-lived NBC drama “Private Eye” (1987-88). He then had a longer run as the young Wild Bill Hickok in the ABC Western “The Young Riders,” which lasted three seasons (198992) and currently can be found in the On Demand lineup for the MGM+ cable channel. Brolin’s next series was “Winnetka Road,” a 1994 interpersonal NBC drama that lasted only five episodes (a sixth was produced but never aired). He would return yet again to NBC briefly in 2003 in the title role of “Mister Sterling,” a drama about a U.S. senator that was created by Lawrence O’Donnell, the MSNBC personality who then used his personal experience from working for Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Lately, Brolin – who also narrated the 2012 documentary series “Mankind: The Story of All of Us” – has starred in “Outer Range,” a combination of science-fiction and Western that currently is in its second season on Prime Video. Imogen Poots and Lili Taylor are among his fellow cast regulars.

Al Pacino keeps his impact in ‘Scarface’ classic corner

Al Pacino has given many memorable performances, and one of the most iconic is his work as the brash and forceful Tony Montana in director Brian DePalma’s 1983 version of “Scarface.” MGM+ Hits shows the film Tuesday, June 11, and it proves that Pacino’s power in the part hasn’t diminished at all in the 40plus years since the Oliver Stone-scripted picture debuted … and shocked many moviegoers with the graphic level of its violence.

A refugee from Cuba, the self-assured Montana becomes a major figure in the Miami drug world, making plenty of enemies along the way. Michelle Pfeiffer took a big career leap forward as Tony’s eventual wife, whom he steals from his mentor (Robert Loggia), and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio also makes a big impression as Montana’s sister. Steven Bauer and F. Murray Abraham also are prominent, but Pacino always is the focus right up to the picture’s famous ending, a mansion shootout that sees Montana wield a massive machine gun that he ironically calls his “little friend.”

For McLaren — and, arguably, every team in competition — Red Bull remains the greatest barrier to victory in F1 racing. But McLaren drivers Piastri and Lando Norris have had stellar performances to begin the 2024 season.

Norris, who has consistently remained in the top tier since entering F1, secured his first win of the season at the Miami Grand Prix and has earned multiple podium finishes to boot.

For his teammate Piastri, keeping the momentum going after a promising rookie year has also contributed significantly to the team’s overall success, with three fourth-place finishes (as of press time) bringing in some much-needed points.

Going into this year’s Canadian Grand Prix, Piastri holds a top-10 position in the standings while trailing his teammate Norris, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and F1 2023 world champion Max Verstappen, who continues his dominance in 2024.

As the F1 circus heads to Montreal, the stakes are only getting higher. Piastri’s 2024 season reflects his growth as a driver as he reaches closer to the reality of becoming a leading contender in F1. With continued support from McLaren and his relentless drive to improve, Piastri is set for more success as the season progresses.

But touring is exhausting. O’Toole often tells new cast members that they have been hired for a construction crew, and they spend more time on that task than performing. Each day on the road, before the show starts, the cast builds the stage. And each night, after the show wraps, they deconstruct it again and stow it back in its trailer to journey to the next venue.

“Every night is opening night and closing night,” O’Toole said. He wouldn’t change it. Rather than follow the path of his college contemporaries to stages in Chicago or New York, O’Toole found fulfillment in teaching, in interacting with the audiences and in exploring Montana.

“You’re actually engaging with people about the show, you’re eating meals in their homes, you’re staying in their homes,” he said. This final tour is in many ways an opportunity. O’Toole still has the ability to connect with audiences in communities, but then has a greater say in implementing changes that are imagined on the road as the associate artistic director.

O’Toole did some community theater shows as a kid in Sacramento, California, then found his way back to the stage during his senior year of high school,

Sing it Like Celia by Mónica Mancillas — After her mother’s sudden departure, 12-year-old Salva Sanchez adjusts to her new life in an RV campground with her father and finds her voice through new friendships and a love for Celia Cruz, the ‘queen of salsa’. In a time when children are living in campers in Bozeman, this novel is quite insightful.

He intended to apply to the Air Force Academy, but after a gap year instead chose the University of Minnesota and Guthrie Theater’s actor training program.

the space, the curiosity that he had in this space, the eagerness and willingness to participate on any level, was what we need here,” Asselin said.

O’Toole was drawn to MSIP for the sheer amount of stage experience it offered. If you think of it like a fine artist, he explained, 78 shows in a season means 78 chances to get into the studio, 78 chances to hone his craft. Not to mention the competitive pay and focus on community.

You may remember O’Toole as Edgar in “King Lear,” Puck in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,”

With Hamlet, he intends to bring out the humor of the character, as the prince of Denmark toys with those around them in his own search for personal truth and desire to live up to expectations. In “The Winter’s Tale,” O’Toole is a shepherd, a small, humorous role that swept fellow castmates into fits of laughter at Tuesday’s rehearsal.

“It’s amazing to get to play Hamlet,” O’Toole said. “It feels like a culmination, for sure.”
