‘POWERFUL PARADOX’ Land, industry collide in ‘Wheatfield’ at Tinworks

The seeds of this summer’s exhibition at Tinworks Art go back to the spring of 1982, when conceptual artist Agnes Denes planted 2 acres of wheat on top of a landfill in lower Manhattan. For four months, New Yorkers watched as the wheat grew, turning from green to gold and creating a dramatic contrast to the city skyline. Denes called the piece, “Wheatfield: A Confrontation,” a “powerful paradox.”

In the history of art and especially of ecological and land-based art, Denes’ piece is iconic, Jenny Moore, the director of Bozeman-based Tinworks Art, said on Tuesday. When in talks with the organization’s board about her position and asked for ideas for future exhibitions, “Wheatfield” was the first place Moore’s mind traveled.

“When I think about Montana and the kind of art and images that live in my mind, one of the first things I came to was Agnes’ ‘Wheatfield’ and understanding the dynamics of a growing Bozeman and the loss of agricultural land in the region,” Moore said.

Now, Moore said, the organization is “very honored” that Denes accepted the invitation to reimagine the work. Denes’ “Wheatfield — An Inspiration. The seed is in the ground” is the centerpiece of this summer’s Tinworks Art exhibition “The Lay of the Land,” on view from June 15 through Oct. 19. An opening celebration is Saturday, June 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Tinworks Art, 719 N. Ida Ave. in Bozeman.

In the summer 1992 edition of Art Journal, Denes wrote about “Wheatfield: A Confrontation” and outlined the idea for “Tree Mountain,” a piece that would be dedicated in Finland in 1996. Art, she explained, lives beyond our ideas of art and can and should incorporate elements we may not consider “art” to achieve a vision.

“Wicked Tuna” - Season 13 (June 19)

Wicked Tuna follows a group of salty fishermen from the nation’s oldest seaport — Gloucester, Massachusetts — as they make their living the way it’s been done for centuries: rod and reel fishing, one catch at a time, all in pursuit of the bluefin tuna. One “monstah” bluefin can be worth more than $20,000, and with that kind of money on the line, every captain is fighting to be the best in the fleet.

“Shoresy” - Season 3 (June 21)

This Smash-hit series returns for a six-episode third season. Created by and starring Jared Keeso, sees the foul-mouthed, chirp-serving, mother-loving, fan favourite character, Shoresy (Keeso), and the Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs of the Northern Ontario Senior Hockey Organization (The NOSHO), continue their quest to never lose again. In Season 3, Shoresy and the Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs compete in the National Senior Tournament, facing off against teams from across Canada, like the Charlottetown Reds, Vaughan Canadesi, and SOO Hunt.

“Marmalade”

(June 21)

This romance-infused crime thriller follows the recently incarcerated Baron (Joe Keery), who strikes up a friendship with cellmate Otis (Aldis Hodge), a man with a well-versed history of prison breaks. As the pair hatch an escape plan together, Baron recalls the story of how he met Marmalade (Camila Morrone), the love of his life, and their “Bonnie and Clyde” style scheme to rob a bank in order to care for his sick mother and give the couple the life they’ve always dreamed of.

Patton Oswalt has been a lot of things in his entertainment career, but a game show host hasn’t been one of them … until now.

The comedian and actor has played many different professions in television and movie roles, but he’s currently very much himself as he presides over Fox’s new Monday competition “The 1% Club,” also available to stream on Prime Video. In the show, that’s based on a format being used internationally, Primetime Emmy and Grammy winner Oswalt poses questions to players who have to prove they’re in the top percentage of those who can avoid wrong answers to focus on the right ones. Episodes are also available on Prime Video.

Oswalt is no stranger to TV games from the other side, having been a contestant on ABC’s “Celebrity Jeopardy!” and earning $250,000 for charity by placing second in a tournament last year. He’s also known for the stand-up comedy specials he’s done for such outlets as Comedy Central and Netflix, but his acting roles have covered a range of projects and characters.

Seen recently in the movie “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” Oswalt started his big-screen work with “Down Periscope” in 1996 and proceeded through such other films as the acclaimed drama “Magnolia” (1999) and the comedies “Starsky and Hutch” (2004) and “22 Jump Street” (2014). He also has been in the voice casts of animated efforts including “Ratatouille” (2007) and “The Secret Life of Pets 2” (2019).

As for Oswalt’s other TV work, he has been a writer as well as an actor (Fox’s “MADtv” being a notable example), and he has appeared in recent years on such shows as ABC’s “The Conners,” HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows.” He starred in the NBC school sitcom “A.P. Bio,” and he had a standout role — actually, four of them — by playing quadruplets on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” during its ABC run.

Now, Oswalt has the television part he knows better than any other: himself. And as he “plays” it, the contestants he quizzes are hoping to cash in on it.

“Prey” (June 22)

After an extremist militant group threatens their lives, a young couple (Ryan Phillippe and Mena Suvari) is forced to flee their Christian missionary post in the Kalahari Desert. After being granted passage aboard a rickety plane, piloted by a corrupt smuggler (Emile Hirsch), their escape to safety is nearly in reach. But, when their aircraft loses power and crash lands, they find themselves fighting for survival against both man and beast.

Disney serves up another

‘Frozen’

treat

If anything was a sure bet at the box office at the time, it was “Frozen II.”

The original, animated 2013 movie was that sort of serendipity any studio wishes for ... even Disney, which doesn’t always have its expectations met. The company wanted to make sure its best foot was put forward on a “Frozen” sequel, which is why it took six years. Freeform shows “Frozen II” Saturday, June 22, right after — appropriately enough — the first “Frozen.”

The care shows in the storytelling, so the 2019 follow-up wasn’t just a money grab … though Disney very happily grabbed a lot of money from it. Voiced again by Idina Menzel, Elsa has returns to her kingdom (or make that queendom) after getting her power to freeze under control. She’s still haunted by elements of her past, though, and she believes she might be able to change the fates of some of her ancestors. Thus, she and her sister Anna (again sporting Kristen Bell’s voice) set off on that quest.

Of course, snowman Olaf also is along, with Josh Gad’s vocals giving him the now-expected dose of attitude. In fact, the entire voice cast is well-chosen, with fellow Broadway veterans Jonathan Groff and Santino Fontana also back, and “This Is Us” alum Sterling K. Brown making a significant contribution in a new role. There’s no “Let It Go” on the soundtrack this time, though that tune does get a reprise, but the included songs are appropriate and catchy enough.

A second act for a movie franchise always is dicey, since history bears out that so few sequels live up to (and, indeed, don’t diminish) the original. It was particularly critical for Disney to ensure that didn’t happen with “Frozen II,” and not only for the financial health of that project itself.

Its arrival in theaters roughly coincided with the launch of the streaming service Disney+, so it was incumbent on the company – which clearly wanted potential subscribers to see in every way that the Disney magic was intact. “Frozen II” was not a minor element of that, so in that sense, mission accomplished.

Such a massive legion of fans was waiting for “Frozen II,” its makers knew there was no option but to get it right. They did, and since then, the wait has been on for “Frozen III” ... and at this point, that “threequel” is expected to arrive in 2026. In the meantime, Freeform’s double bill of the first two chapters should comfort quite a few people.

Vanessa Lachey

OF NCIS: HAWAI’I

Q: Will the season-ending cliffhanger that involved Vanessa Lachey’s character on “NCIS: Hawai’i” ever be resolved?

A: Apparently not, unless the now-canceled CBS show’s producers reveal (if they even thought that far ahead) what was planned via other avenues. The Season 3 conclusion was filmed before the network made its decision not to renew the series, so what you saw was what you got … not only in the case of that episode, but for the show as a whole.

ON CBS/PARAMOUNT+

Lachey was quite emotional in discussing the end of the program in social-media posts she made, saying that she was “gutted, confused (and) blindsided” by the cancellation notice, which denied the show’s cast and crew (who worked on location in the islands making the series) the opportunity for an official goodbye party. Much attention had been paid to the fact that Lachey’s Jane Tennant was the first female leader of an NCIS team in the franchise, and the actress stated, “This show has meant so much to me.”

While “NCIS: Hawai’i” also ran on Paramount+, and some CBS shows have moved to that streaming service to finish out their runs (“SEAL Team” and “Evil” being among examples), the high price tag of the location filming in this case likely was too prohibitive.

There still will be another “NCIS” drama besides the parent series on CBS in the forthcoming season: the new “NCIS: Origins,” which will focus on the younger years of the Leroy Jethro Gibbs character. Original portrayer Mark Harmon (also an executive producer) will narrate the show, but the central role will be played by Austin Stowell. Paramount+ also has “NCIS: Tony & Ziva” coming, reuniting stars Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo.

Tom Cruise tackles his first ‘Mission: Impossible’

What seemed like a great novelty at the time, with a movie superstar married to an elaborate update of a television classic, became an enduring franchise that’s still going. The first “Mission: Impossible” feature film – which Paramount+ With Showtime presents Monday, June 17, and Saturday, June 22 – casts Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, an earnest and dedicated Impossible Missions Force agent determined to finish an assignment that sees the elimination of much of the rest of his team.

Directed by Brian De Palma, the 1996 picture also involves veteran operative Jim Phelps (played here by Jon Voight) plus a Hunt ally portrayed by Ving Rhames, who became a constant player in the “Mission” movies. Kristin Scott Thomas, Jean Reno, Emmanuelle Beart, Henry Czerny and Vanessa Redgrave also have prominent roles in the fast-moving, good-looking project that has a terrific climax set aboard a European train. The eighth film in the series is slated to arrive in theaters next summer.

Juan Soto looks to remain in top form against rivals Boston Red Sox

The 2024 Major League Baseball season continues as the storied rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox plays out on the field Sunday, June 16, at Fenway Park in Boston. Both teams are battling for top spot in the American League East, with the Yankees currently leading the division. The game airs live on ESPN.

The Yankees, led by manager Aaron Boone, have been a force this season. With a good mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars, they have one of the most well-rounded teams in the league.

One player fans will certainly be watching is Yankees outfielder Juan Soto, who has been a standout and consistent performer in 2024. Acquired in a blockbuster trade during the off-season, Soto has fit seamlessly into the Yankees lineup, providing a major boost to their offensive firepower.

Statistically, Soto has been a powerhouse this season, hitting .311 with 11 home runs and 37 RBIs over 48 games, while his on-base percentage (.411) and slugging percentage (.552) have made him a well-rounded threat of power and consistency at the plate this season. His discipline and clutch hitting have made him a fan favorite and a key contributor to the Yankees’ already impressive 2024 campaign.

The Boston Red Sox, meanwhile, are currently in fourth place in the AL East. Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers has been the standout player this year, hitting .284 with 10 home runs and 23 RBIs, leading the team with a .948 OPS.

This game is not just another entry into the longstanding Yankees-Red Sox rivalry but a key matchup for both teams. As the Yankees look to extend their strong hold on the AL East, the Red Sox will be desperate to gain ground and continue their push for playoff contention.

“The new role of the artist may be to create an art that is more than decoration, commodity, or political tool,” she stated. “It is an art that questions the status quo and the direction life has taken, the endless contradictions we accept and approve. An art that elicits and initiates thinking processes has the power to make statements with universal validity and thus benefit humanity.”

A QR code on a sign by the field leads to a questionnaire, itself a conceptual work aptly titled “Questionnaire,” where the artist seeks a “glance at humanity’s mindset in the year 2024.”

“Do you believe art can influence our thinking, to rethink our priorities and values?” and “What do you think will prove ultimately more important for humanity — science or compassion?”

In conversations with Denes, who is now 93, Moore said the artist was drawn to the Montana project in part because of Tinworks itself. Not too long ago, the arts organization’s space was once a complex of industrial shops slated to be torn down. When Tinworks Art was founded in 2019, the complex on North Ida Avenue was supposed to be temporary.

“But in fact,” Moore said, “the art took hold and the energy of the artists using this space took hold.”

By 2022, Tinworks Art started to consider the site its long-term home. This year, improvements to the space underscore that point. The exterior of Tinworks’ various buildings have been painted a deep cerulean. A new entryway leads patrons into reoriented gallery spaces. And at the rear of the complex, in

materials at hand — soot from a woodstove, repurposed paper and cardboard, sharpened sticks and pencils — in the creation of an extraordinary body of work documenting the land and landscapes, buildings and structures, and interior and metaphysical spaces of the world around him,” a Tinworks exhibition release states.

Like last summer’s exploration of the sounds of the fauna of the west, this year’s exhibition also includes a multi-sensory piece. In it, Robbie Wing collected railroad ties that were found clearing the wheatfield. These act as a physical center for the piece, which engages the ears with a combination of recordings of trains with actual resonant frequencies produced by the materials themselves in real time. And the railroad ties themselves add to the sensory experience, with the smell of industry and the land, of oil, of heat and dust.

“The physicality of sound can tell historical narratives,” Wing explained in the release. “The railroad alters the landscape of many places across the U.S. and especially Montana. My question is, do I know how to listen to a landscape and what is it trying to tell me?”

“The Lay of the Land” is on view at Tinworks Art, 719 N. Ida Ave. in Bozeman from June 15 through Oct. 19. It also includes works by Layli Long Socdier created for 2023’s “Invisible Prairie.” Tinworks is free and open to all.
