‘Firing on all cylinders’

Last Saturday, in the midst of June storm, I met up with Bozeman band Lost Canyons as they were setting up for a block party outside Bozeman Fly Supply. Though the band was voted the town’s No. 1 rock band in the annual Bozeman Magazine reader’s poll this year, I had not met them.

I’m introduced to each band member as they bustle about, sound checking the equipment on a shortened timeline due to the rain delay. They seem comfortable here amid the casual cookout, but bigger

shows are on the horizon.

Months ago, the band reached out to Montana promotion company Logjam Presents, which books shows for the Elm and Rialto in Bozeman as well as the Top Hat, Wilma and Kettlehouse Amphitheater near Missoula. The goal, according to the band, was to book a show at the Rialto — the smallest of the venues with a capacity of 250. In comparison, the Elm can hold up to 1,100 people. The Kettlehouse has room for 4,500. To play a show in one of these venues, backed by a large production company, is a big step up for a local band that usually books

bar gigs and local events.

“A lot of our heroes and favorite bands play Logjam,” said Kennan Krause, the band’s primary songwriter and vocalist. Later, the band members collectively list acts like Rayland Baxter, Caamp, the Oh Hellos and Futurebirds. Futurebirds, especially, are an inspiration. Lost Canyons appreciates the tightness of their live performances, especially difficult as three guitars create a rich, full sound.

“In my opinion, they’re a better live band than a recording band,” Krause said.

HALLIE JACKSON

“A Love Song” (June 26)

Faye (Dale Dickey) is a lone traveler biding her time fishing, birding and stargazing at a rural Colorado campground as she awaits the arrival of Lito (Wes Studi), a figure from her past who is navigating his own tentative and nomadic journey across the rugged West. Like the country music that has traditionally channeled the heartbreak and resilience of Americans in search of themselves and others, the film weaves a lyrical and ultimately joyful refrain out of the transformative act of being alone — and reminds us that love can nourish and mystify at any age.

Anchors and reporters generally try to stay away from making news themselves, but Hallie Jackson can’t help doing so, thanks to her career inroads.

The senior Washington correspondent for NBC News recently succeeded Kate Snow as the anchor of the Sunday edition of “NBC Nightly News,” and she continues her weekday NBC News Now streaming program, “Hallie Jackson Now,” while still covering people and events in America’s capital for all of NBC’s broadcast and digital platforms and also encompassing frequent appearances on “Today” and “Meet the Press.” That’s a lot for one journalist to handle, but Jackson has long demonstrated that she embraces the challenge.

Before she joined NBC a decade ago, Jackson did similar work as a national correspondent for the Hearst-owned television stations, regularly providing reports from Washington, D.C., for almost 30 affiliates. She then was based in Los Angeles for NBC News, but soon was assigned to the network’s political beat, covering politicians as they campaigned during the 2016 election season.

“Red Right Hand” (June 28) Cash (Orlando Bloom) is trying to live an honest and quiet life taking care of his recently orphaned niece Savannah (Chapel Oaks) in the Appalachian town of Odim County. When the sadistic kingpin Big Cat (Andie MacDowell) who runs the town forces him back into her services, Cash learns he’s capable of anything — even killing — to protect the town and the only family he has left. As the journey gets harder, Cash is drawn into a nightmare that blurs the lines between good and evil.

After that, Jackson landed a regular berth on MSNBC, first on weekday mornings and then in an afternoon slot. Now, with a weekly anchor spot on “NBC Nightly News,” her trajectory continues, as does her clear immersion in the subject matter she conveys to audiences. And that, like the job she inhabits, is destined to continue.

Birthdate: April 29, 1984

Birthplace: Yardley, Pa.

Current residence: Washington, D.C.

Marital status: Divorced; her current partner is NBC News producer-reporter Frank Thorp, and they have a daughter

Other television credits include: “Today,” “Saturday Today,” “Sunday Today With Willie Geist,” “NBC Nightly News With Lester Holt,” “Meet the Press,” “MSNBC Reports With Hallie Jackson,” “MSNBC Live,” “Deadline: White House,” “Morning Joe,” “The Rachel Maddow Show,” “The Beat With Ari Melber,” “The News With Shepard Smith,” 2020 Democratic Presidential Debate (on NBC and MSNBC), State of the Union Address

Awards and honors she has received include: Membership in academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa Checking

Later, Jackson became NBC News’ chief White House correspondent, reporting on the administration of President Donald Trump and making related trips (many of them international). She also was one of the moderators of NBC and MSNBC’s Democratic presidential debate in 2020 in Las Vegas.

Education: Pennsbury High School (Fairless Hills, Pa.), Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Md.)

Television stations she has worked for include: WFSBTV, Hartford, Conn.; WBOC-TV, Salisbury, Md.

‘Creed’ gives the ‘Rocky’

saga extra punch

What a clever repurposing of a famous character.

A movie icon, still played by the same actor, usually doesn’t get the freshening Sylvester Stallone gives Rocky Balboa in “Creed” — a smart, entertaining extension of one of screen history’s most famous franchises. The 2015 drama that started its own series will be presented Sunday, June 23, on MGM+.

The title “Creed” suggests the main relationship that involves another boxer: Adonis Johnson, the illegitimate son of Rocky’s old rival and eventual comrade, Apollo Creed (who was portrayed, unforgettably, by the late Carl Weathers). The younger man, well-played by Michael B. Jordan (reunited with “Fruitvale Station” filmmaker Ryan Coogler), also wants to be in the fight game ... despite the upper-class life his family is trying to shoehorn him into.

He bolts and heads for Philadelphia, and you can guess who he wants to train him. Like Rocky did, the young Creed eventually gets a one-in-a-million shot, his being against a British champ ... and the cinematography in the fight sequences (by Maryse Alberti) is really energetic and thrilling.

So is watching Stallone embrace his inner Rocky fully again. After “Rocky III,” he seemed to be on auto-pilot with the role. However, having handed it over to a different director and writers (which couldn’t have been an easy decision for him at the time, since the Oscar-earning Rocky character was completely his brainchild), he seems eager for the challenge, and it’s a pleasure to watch.

In fact, “Creed” is smartly cast right down the line. As she has in her stage work, Phylicia Rashad affirms how much she can do beyond “The Cosby Show’s” Clair Huxtable as Adonis’ maternal figure, and Tessa Thompson (“Selma”) also impresses as his vocally gifted new love. As the principal rival in the ring, engaging in his last fight before heading to prison, Anthony Bellew is properly imposing.

OF CLIPPED ON HULU

Q: It’s nice to see Ed O’Neill working regularly again in “Clipped.” Didn’t he do another series in-between “Married … With Children” and “Modern Family”?

A: In fact, the actor – who currently plays Donald Sterling, the owner of basketball’s Los Angeles Clippers, in the FX-produced Hulu series – was a regular on several series during that period. Though NBC’s 2000 fantasy “The 10th Kingdom” technically was a miniseries, O’Neill played the Troll King in it over the course of nine episodes.

More traditional was the 2001 police drama “Big Apple,” which CBS aired for just over a month in 2001, with two of the eight produced episodes not televised (though they were included in a DVD set later.) The cast also included someone who would have much greater success with another New York-set CBS police drama afterward, “Blue Bloods” co-star Donnie Wahlberg.

O’Neill didn’t stay away from cop shows long, since his next series was ABC’s “L.A. Dragnet” (2003-04), executive producer Dick Wolf’s (“Law & Order”) take on the classic “Dragnet” show that had a couple of earlier TV incarnations under creator and star Jack Webb. O’Neill assumed Webb’s role as police detective Joe Friday (promoted to the rank of lieutenant), and another cast member was Eva Longoria, soon before “Desperate Housewives” came to be.

While O’Neill had a recurring role as a governor on NBC’s “The West Wing” after that, his other major series pre-”Modern Family” was HBO’s “John From Cincinnati’’ (2007), a single-season drama about California surfers. His character in that show still had police ties, since he was a retired cop; Austin Nichols played the titular John in a cast that also included Bruce Greenwood, Rebecca De Mornay, Luke Perry and Jennifer Grey.

‘Coming Home’ brings the Vietnam War era home again

The Vietnam War was still a subject that movie studios were sensitive about approaching when “Coming Home” was released in 1978, but the praise it received and the Oscars it won — for actress (for Jane Fonda), actor (Jon Voight) and original screenplay — affirmed to executives at United Artists that making the Hal Ashby-directed drama was the right move. Turner Classic Movies presents it Saturday, June 29, as part of a “Two for One” night of selections by filmmaker Nicole Holofcener (“Walking and Talking”).

Fonda plays the wife of a dedicated Marine captain (Bruce Dern), and while he’s deployed overseas, she becomes involved with a former classmate (Voight), a quadriplegic injured during his own military service. Her feelings for both men leave her torn as they espouse vastly different sentiments about America’s involvement in the war; while the movie makes its points on that count, it also works as a moving love story. The soundtrack includes familiar songs of the era by such artists as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Chambers Brothers.

The 2024 NHL Entry Draft set to kick off at the Las Vegas Sphere

The 2024 NHL Entry Draft is fast approaching, with the highly anticipated event set to take place at the Las Vegas Sphere, June 28-29 in Paradise, Nevada, with the spotlight on none other than Macklin Celebrini, who is widely regarded as the top prospect at this year’s draft. Catch all of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft live on ESPN. Expected by many to go first overall in the draft, Macklin Celebrini is a dynamic center from Boston University. As a freshman, Celebrini racked up 64 points (32 goals, 32 assists) in just 37 games, showcasing a complete 200-foot game that ultimately led to his nomination for the Hobey Baker Award (which he won). But, more importantly, these impressive stats leds to Celebrini securing his position as the top candidate to be the No. 1 overall pick. Proving his ability to control the game on both ends of the ice, Celebrini has the star power to make him a franchise-altering prospect.

Beyond Celebrini, the draft class is teeming with diverse talent. Other notable names include offensive defenseman Zayne Parekh of the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit (projected fifth overall); Cayden Lindstrom of the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers, a highly touted center with excellent offensive awareness and skill set (projected third overall); and Artyom Levshunov, a freshman defenseman at Michigan State, who has caught attention from teams for his ability to play a complete game and with the skills to play in all situations (projected second overall).

With a good crop of NHL-ready prospects included alongside Celebrini, this year’s draft is set to be one of the most unpredictable in recent memory.

Soon, Lost Canyons will grace the same stage. While the Rialto show is happening, a date has yet to be set. In the meantime, after the initial contact with Logjam, Lost Canyons was floated as an opening possibility for folk pop musician Mat Kearney. That gig was confirmed at the beginning of June. Lost Canyons open for Kearney at The ELM at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, as part of Kearney’s “Headlights Home” tour.

Lost Canyons was formed by Krause and college friend Mitch Lauenstein almost three years ago. But when Lauenstein moved to Kalispell, Krause found himself lost in a sea of musicians, playing with 13 different people over the span of a year before deciding he needed to form a real ensemble.

“I was tired of having to teach a new band every week,” Krause said. “I’m friends with all these guys and so I kind of roped them in.”

With the rest of the band around, I press for details. How did he rope in the other musicians?

“He literally just asked,” drummer Lucas Swets said. In addition to Swets, Lost

Canyons now includes Jaden Attard on bass and Paul Elias on lead guitar. Lauenstein still performs with the band when possible, and will be on stage for the Elm show.

Through the changes in personnel, or maybe because of them, Lost Canyons has defined its own style. Six-track EP “Drive By Volume,” released in October 2021, was in some ways an exploration through folk, rock and alternative music. But what is the Lost Canyons sound?

“It took us years to pin a genre down,” Krause said. “It’s hard, right?”

“Tear Me Up,” the third track on the debut full-length album “Lost Canyons,” released in October 2023,” provided a guide.

“We had the most fun recording that and putting that out,” Krause said. “So I think we wanted to make that more of our identity, just lean in.”

Despite the spectrum of tastes of the musicians (listen for Swets sneaking in some

metal-inspired blast beats), Lost Canyons has in fact leaned into the idea of being an indie rock band. You can hear Death Cab for Cutie or Wilco in the driving guitars calmed by melodic background vocals.

Most songs start with Krause, who comes up with melodies and guitar and bass parts before taking the idea to the other band members, who use the parts as a starting point. Krause also co-writes with Lauenstein.

“And then Lucas does whatever he wants because I’m not a drummer,” Krause said.

Attard, for one, said he enjoys being part of a larger team. While he often explores his own musical leanings, the well-rounded musical tastes as well as performance styles both mesh well and provide opportunity for personal growth.

“Nobody occupies the same sound so there’s freedom to be creative and not feel like you’re stomping on someone else’s toes,” Elias said.

The band tries to find

freedom of expression in performance as well, leaning into fun antics on stage. If things get serious, Krause may give a playful head-butt to the musician next to him or Attard will hit the crash cymbal with the head of his bass. But in the end, Attard said the audience goes along for the ride because they believe in the band and they are all “pretty sincere guys.”

“When we’re playing, you can tell we’re really putting our heart into it,” Attard said.

With weekly rehearsals and nearly 30 shows lined up for the summer, Elm and Rialto shows included, it is clear that Lost Canyons is on the rise. It’s a great feeling for the band.

“It’s fun too,” Krause said, “because we’ve been, for a year and a half, like, putting in the time, playing a bunch of shows and rehearsing. I feel like we’re firing on all cylinders right now.”
