SETH MEYERS
“The Batman” (Available Now)
Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman, striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high‐profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens. When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters both friends and foes.
Viewers who enjoy watching Seth Meyers in the wee hours will be glad to know he’ll be staying there, at least for a while.
In February, the “Saturday Night Live” alum marked his 10th anniversary as the sly, witty host of NBC’s weeknight program, “Late Night With Seth Meyers.” He’ll be continuing to preside over that show’s mix of topical humor, interviews and musical performances, since he recently signed a deal to continue with it through 2028. The extension of his contract also covers his producing other content for the NBC Universal-owned group of platforms. However, “Late Night” will be without regular appearances by its musical 8G Band beginning next season.
Having scored multiple Primetime Emmy nominations for “Late Night” and its digital spinoff, “Corrections,” the droll Meyers has certainly gotten his audience accustomed to what to expect from him and his staff. He differs from other talk show hosts by delivering his monologue (as well as the typically related segment “A Closer Look”) from behind his desk, while others usually stand center-stage to make their opening jokes.
Drilling down humorously on subjects of the day has been one of Meyers’ strongest suits for some time. It’s an art he honed during his tenure as the anchor (initially sharing that job with Amy Poehler, then with Cecily Strong just before he left the show) and head writer of the headline-spoofing “Saturday Night Live” feature “Weekend Update.” He reportedly held out from signing a new contract for “SNL” until he was assured a regular on-camera “Update” role.
A past host of such events as The Primetime Emmy Awards and The ESPY Awards, Meyers also continues to do live performances in and

Still a ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’: James Cagney returns on July 4th
One of the true Warner Bros. classics, “Yankee Doodle Dandy” — which Turner Classic Movies gives its traditional holiday showing Thursday, July 4 — is the 1942 biography of “born on the Fourth of July” (though his birthdate actually was July 3, 1878) showman George M. Cohan, It boasts one of screen history’s truly iconic performances, and James Cagney was rightfully awarded an Oscar for it. He does alternately energetic and, particularly in the picture’s home stretch, quietly affecting work.
The film was released just a few months before Cohan’s death, and it’s been said that he saw and enjoyed Cagney’s portrayal of him, though he initially preferred Fred Astaire to play him. Cohan’s sister Josie is played by Jeanne Cagney, sta r Cagney’s real-life sibling; Joan Leslie, Walter Huston, George Tobias, Rosemary DeCamp and Richard Whorf (who was later a prolific television director) also are in director Michael Curtiz’s (“Casablanca”) cast, but there’s no debating that this is James Cagney’s show first and foremost.

Teen prospect Miles Russell gets set to make his pro debut
Golf fans are in for a treat this week as 15-yearold sensation Miles Russell prepares to make his PGA Tour debut at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic, June 27-30 at Detroit’s own Detroit Golf Club. The tournament broadcasts live on CBS.
As the PGA Tour heads to Detroit, all eyes will be on Russell, the youngest champion in Junior Players Championship history. Now, as one of the youngest players to ever make the PGA Tour cut, the Jacksonville Beach, Florida, native is set to make his pro golf debut in a highly competitive tournament.
“Ever since I first started playing golf, my dream has been to compete on the PGA Tour and test my game against the best players,” Russell said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to making the most of the experience later this month.”
Leading up to his debut, Russell was the American Junior Golf Association player of the year in 2023. In 2024, Russell has continued his impressive play, posting a 5-under 66 at the LECOM Suncoast Classic in April, finishing the final round on an impressive run with seven birdies in 10 holes, making him the youngest player to complete a top25 finish on either the PGA Tour or the Korn Ferry Tour since at least 1983.
While much of the focus will be on the 15-year-old phenom Russell, Rickie Fowler will try to defend his Rocket Mortgage Classic title. However, this season has seen Fowler struggle considerably since winning at the Detroit Golf Club in 2023.
Speaking to reporters at the Rocket Mortgage Classic media day, Fowler remained optimistic as he looks to become the first two-time champion at the tournament.
“A lot comes down to process and having self-belief. Things have been very close,” Fowler said via Zoom. “We’ve had a lot of good rounds. I just haven’t been able to piece them together and put a good week together,” said Fowler.

“I say it tongue-in-cheek, like ‘oh my gosh I can’t believe I said it,’ but also glad that I did,” Hill said. “I would not be here if I did not ask for help.”
Mountains & Manuscripts grew out of Hill’s desire to pass on the sense of support and community she initially received, and that she has cultivated over the past few years.
“For many, if you do it solo, it feels very isolated,” Hill said of writing. “But I feel like when you find a community, you get to share your tragedies, your grief, your trauma, you get the support, the friendship and the help you need.”
For Mountains & Manuscripts, nearly 20 authors, as well as a support staff of Hill’s neighbors and friends, spent four days in the Bridger Mountains at Hardscrabble Ranch, www. hardscrabbleranch.com, up Brackett Creek. Activities included workshops and writing exercises, like sprints, but was as much about camaraderie as it was work. The retreat, Hill said, was never meant to be a boot camp wherein the contributing authors put noses to the grindstone and brag on page counts. She wanted to give them a break. Participants threw hatchets at targets in the woods, did morning yoga in the barn and Western-themed

karaoke at night.
“This is a retreat,” Hill said. “This is a vacation for you to be inspired, to write, to relax, to chill and to talk to everybody in real life that we talk to online.”
Mountains & Manuscripts’ loose schedule allowed for lots of leaning into those connections, with two hour meal blocks and plenty of down time to allow for writing or conversations about plot holes or writing struggles that eventually devolved into raunchier topics.
The indie publishing world can be a tight-knit community, Hill explained. While not all of the authors had met in person before the retreat, many of them have become friends over the internet.
Participants included Chicagoan Jillian Lainey, who, inspired by living in Nashville, writes romances with country singers as the love interest.
“I’m starting to do every part of this process myself,” Lainey said. “So having these girls in my corner has been everything and getting to meet them has been so much better.”

Madison Noelle, from Utah, turned the book she had worked on as a 17-year-old into her first novel, aging up the characters and using some of the scenes she wrote as flashbacks. Elle Jordan, from Colorado, is finishing a series, but then has plans to turn to one of her favorite reading topics: aliens.
Hill focuses on women’s fiction, with her latest works leaning into romantic comedy filled with memorable and quirky characters.
Each woman of the group brought a unique perspective, with interests ranging from steamy bodice-rippers to alien abductions, or some combination of the two. They happily shared experience and expertise. And they seemed as open as a table of women, with easy conversations about tampons and sex amid the more serious writing topics.
You would never guess, Hill commented, gesturing to a full table of beautifully animated women mid conversation, are introverts. But with the mountains, the manuscripts and each other, they have found their voices.
