‘Grittier and more interesting’

This year, Lucinda Williams’ concerts have taken two directions. There are the “rock shows” that the Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and guitarist, now 71, has been performing for most of her life. These involve Williams on stage with a live band, drawing on her immense song catalog and 16 studio albums that have come to define Americana music to create a setlist.

Then there are the “book shows,” wherwe Williams sits down with the audience, recounting the stories that shaped her person and career, much like she does in memoir “Don’t Tell Anybody The Secrets I Told You,” released in April. Williams will perform a “book show” at the Elm in Bozeman on July 9.

“Book shows” are much more intimate, Williams said in her signature gravelly drawl during a phone interview with Ruckus last week. The stories she tells are mainly chronological, following her life and, after picking up her first guitar at age 12, the music. Old home video footage and photographs are projected on stage behind her.

“I talk about moving to Austin and the first time I made a record and the first song that I had written that ended up on a record,” she said.

Like the memoir informs performances on this tour, performances inspired parts of the memoir. “Lake Charles, for example, has always had an on-stage introduction.

“Mastermind: To Think Like a Killer” (July 11)

A fascinating new perspective on the woman whose crime hunting innovations changed history. To stop serial killers, psychiatric nurse and professor Dr. Ann Burgess must first learn to think like one. With unprecedented access to the mastermind behind the development of modern serial-killer profiling, the series tells Burgess’ tenacious story and her compassion for victims which puts her at the center of America’s most infamous true-crime cases.

Indeed he is, if you’re a fan of “Family Feud” — and a lot of viewers still are. A television staple for many years, the Harvey-hosted game show continues to perform well, both in its syndicated weekday version and in its “Celebrity Family Feud” variation on ABC. The latter incarnation starts its 11th season (which encompasses the 100th episode) Tuesday, July 9, immediately after the special “Family Feud: Decades of Laughs” celebrates the almost-50-year history of the overall franchise.

“Family Feud” originally debuted in 1976, also on ABC, with Richard Dawson — then known for his co-starring role on “Hogan’s Heroes” and also as a panelist on “Match Game” — as its first host. As the show continued, he would be succeeded by Ray Combs (“Overboard,” 1987) in syndication and on CBS, but Dawson eventually returned. Louie Anderson (“Life with Louie”), Richard Karn (“Home Improvement”) and John O’Hurley (“Seinfeld”) then followed, with Harvey becoming the host of the syndicated daily edition in 2010.

The results of Harvey joining the show quickly became evident with an increase in ratings, and while each host had added their own brand of humor to the format, the game has stayed the same whether or not the players are celebrities. (However, in the case of “Celebrity Family Feud,” the winnings go to selected charities.) Two teams try to answer a question or complete a phrase by guessing the most popular answers that were gathered in a survey; if a team gets three wrong answers, the opposing squad can “steal” the game by coming up with a correct answer.

offering with Harvey in 2015 — also is seen in repeats regularly on BET, and it affords Harvey many chances to have amusing and sometimes edgy exchanges with the players, as does the original weekday show. The premise has proven quite durable, so while it can accommodate other hosts, it’s likely Harvey — whose “Judge Steve Harvey” series returns to ABC on July 16 — will stay with it for as long as he wants to.

More than a few good actors fuel ‘A Few Good Men’

“You can’t handle the truth!”

Certain lines of dialogue become so legendary, it’s known immediately which projects they come from. So it is with the sentence delivered by Jack Nicholson in an intense military courtroom scene in “A Few Good Men,” Aaron Sorkin’s play that Rob Reiner brought to film in an effective and involving 1992 movie version that BBC America shows Monday, July 8.

Nicholson plays hard-as-nails Navy Colonel Nathan Jessep, a base commander investigated by several JAG lawyers — portrayed by Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Kevin Pollak — after a soldier’s death leads to the court martial of two of the deceased man’s peers (Wolfgang Bodison, James Marshall). Cruise’s character, Lt. Daniel Kaffee, has a carefree attitude that annoys the morte studious Lt. Cmdr. Joanne Galloway (Moore). However, his tactics have a usefulness that gives her a certain appreciation of his approach, if not completely. Still, they have defendants who aren’t always cooperative, posing complications as the attorneys try to get to the bottom of a “Code Red” order that apparently was the cause of the death. Kaffee suspects that Jessep was the source of that command, setting up a battle of wills between the two men that comes to involve Jessep’s counsel (Kevin Bacon) and other officers under Jessep’s oversight (Kiefer Sutherland, “ER’ alum Noah Wyle).

Sorkin adapted “A Few Good Men” for the screen, and while he and Reiner hold to the plot details originally set down by the project, the movie incarnation leaves plenty of room for sheer star power. Cruise plus Nicholson plus Moore still would be a major combination now, and it certainly was when the picture had its theatrical run … with those stars’ presence adding considerable wattage to what might have been considered material that was a bit more dry in other hands.

Tracy Spiridakos

Q: Now that Tracy Spiridakos has left “Chicago P.D.” as a regular cast member, is it possible that she’ll be back on the show as a guest?

A: That’s one of those “never say ‘never’” answers, since the actress made it clear at the time of her exit that she maintains great affection for her colleagues on both sides of the cameras on the NBC police drama. She said she definitely would return to Chicago to visit then, if only behind the scenes … but if there was a sensible story-driven reason for her Hailey Upton character to reappear on-screen, one would think Spiridakos would give it serious consideration.

The way Upton departed from “Chicago P.D.” left a possible way for her to resurface, since she was looking at the websites of agencies such as the FBI and the CIA, so it seemed that continuing in law enforcement in some way was on very much on her mind. In fact, Upton already has had a taste of working within one of those organizations: Spiridakos did a crossover guest shot in the role in a Season 2 episode of CBS’s “FBI,” executive-produced (as “Chicago P.D.” is) by Dick Wolf.

That being said, Spiridakos expressed that a major reason for her deciding to leave “Chicago P.D.” was her desire to shake things up for herself and see what other work might be available to her. Before starting her long run as a Windy City cop, she had starred in the NBC series “Revolution” and did recurring roles on such other shows as A&E Network’s “Bates Motel” and CBS’s reboot of “MacGyver.” Still, her “Chicago P.D.” tenure constituted a major portion of her career, so her wanting to spread her wings is understandable.

A flawed spy taught TV how to ‘Get Smart’

At the height of the spy-story craze in the mid-1960s, Mel Brooks and Buck Henry decided to send up the genre with “Get Smart,” a sitcom that yielded some very memorable gimmicks and catchphrases. Catchy Comedy continues a weekend marathon of the show Sunday, July 7, with Don Adams playing self-assured but sometimes incompetent “Agent 86” Maxwell Smart … whose devices include a working telephone in his shoe.

Partnered with fellow CONTROL operative Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon), Smart obeys the bidding of his boss (Edward Platt) — who often receives the famous apology, “Sorry about that, Chief” — by regularly going up against the enemy operation KAOS and its power-craving villains. Notable cast members also include Dick Gautier as Hymie the Robot, who leaves KAOS to join CONTROL, and Bernie Kopell (later of “The Love Boat”) as Smart nemesis Ludwig Von Siegfried.

Russell aims for first victory of the season in front of home crowd

Start your engines, Formula One fans, because George Russell is coming home!

In front of his home crowd in England, Russell is looking to push hard in what fans can expect to be a thrilling race. The 2024 British Grand Prix gets underway July 5-7, with practice sessions, qualifiers and the race day broadcast live on ESPN. The 2024 F1 campaign has been off to a slower than anticipated start for Mercedes, as the team continues to struggle to keep pace with front-runners Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren. With a newly designed W15 car going into the season, both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton have only secured one podium appearance, with their best finish of the year coming at the Canadian Grand Prix, where Russell came in third.

While there have been many positives with the new W15 car — including a floor upgrade in Miami, as well as upgraded brake ducts, a new rear and new beam wing in Imola — it has yet to live up to its expectations.

Remaining hopeful that better days are ahead, Russell spoke with Sky Sports F1 about the realities of upgrading a car in a season with competition already as tight as it has been.

“When new upgrades take eight weeks to bring to the car, you learn this problem, Race 1, Race 2. You can’t just bring an upgrade to the next race,” said Russell. “You’ve got to put it in the wind tunnel, you’ve got to design it, someone’s got to draw it, someone’s got to build it, and then you’re halfway through the season. I think that’s why it’s so difficult when you’re on the back foot to just suddenly make that progress, and everybody expects it to be tomorrow, and we want it tomorrow, trust me. But this is the reality of Formula One,” said Russell.

The song was written in the aftermath of the death of a former love, long after the two had separated, to help her find a new perspective. You can still hear the wistful smile in Williams’ voice as she speaks of his ability to make a “mean pot of gumbo” and the yellow El Camino referenced in the song’s lyrics that the two used to take on road trips between Houston and New Orleans, stopping at a little place that made boudin, a pork sausage that is usually shaped into balls and fried in cajun cuisine.

“Every time I sing a song about the south, I end up talking about food,” she said, a comment that seems very southern in its own right.

“To me, it’s more satisfying to write like that,” Williams said. “The real stuff is grittier and more interesting.”

As an artist, Williams has always been most comfortable writing about her own life,
