Brick Bound

Brick Bound owner and maker Matt Saporito is serious when he says his leather pieces are handmade. Behind a work table in the new Brick Bound shop in the old Misco Mill building, Saporito stitches a piece of leather together — by hand. A bag slowly begins to take form. Nearby, a sign proclaims “no sewing machines” in sienna-colored cut leather on blue plywood.

Once, Saporito counted the number of stitches on his smaller duffle bag and came up with 1,888. Each is visited three times as he marks the leather, punctures and then stitches it.

“I interact with that piece over 5,600 times, which is crazy,” he said.

And that is ignoring the dying, cutting, lining and hardware attachment. But for Saporito, it is worth it.

“I don’t take any short cuts and in the 10 years since I’ve been a registered business I’ve never had to fix a stitch,” he wrote on a recent Instagram post.

When Saporito started the business in 2014, he never thought he would be able to afford Bozeman rent. Instead, he toiled alone at home, stitching his pieces into existence. Last winter, Saporito picked up a part-time job as a ski instructor — not because Brick Bound wasn’t keeping him busy, but because he was craving more social interaction. By the second day of training on the slopes, Saporito’s voice was gone. He had talked it to death.

“Working alone and living

alone is fine, but when you do both of them for 10 years, it eventually drains you,” he said.

So when an opportunity arose to share a space with the Refillery Supply Co. at 601 E. Cottonwood St., Saporito jumped at the chance. The store has been open since June 1, and a grand opening is set for July 31. Even with inventory levels low after various markets, Brick Bound’s shop has already proven fruitful, and sales in the very first month covered the rent.

Keaton Ramm, a Bozeman local who stopped into the store one Friday afternoon in July, offered unprompted congratulations to Saporito. “It’s been fun to see you grow and see your product grow,” she said.

JONES

“Funny People” (Available Now)

After learning that he has a fatal disease, comic George Simmons (Adam Sandler) spots a struggling performer named Ira (Seth Rogen) and decides to become his mentor. The men become close friends as George teaches Ira the art of stand-up comedy, and Ira helps George define his legacy. When an old flame (Leslie Mann) reappears and the disease goes into remission, George gets a chance to re-evaluate his life and figure out what is truly important to him.

Comedy may have been Rashida Jones’ main calling card initially, but “versatility” is now the more appropriate word for her career.

Having made her mark on such series as NBC’s “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation” and TBS’s “Angie Tribeca,” the youngest daughter of entertainment impresario Quincy Jones and the late actress Peggy Lipton (“The Mod Squad”) has been shaking up the types of projects she does. A solid example is her current Apple TV+ show “Sunny,” a merger of sci-fi and mystery that casts Jones (also an executive producer of the show) as Suzie, an American-born resident of Japan who has supposedly lost her husband (Hidetoshi Nishijima, “Drive My Car,” 2021) and son in a plane crash.

Her husband’s company gifts her with a robot — the eponymous Sunny, played by Joanna Sotamura (“Barry”) — to help her with domestic chores, but they become associated even more closely as they set out to learn exactly what happened to Suzie’s family. Dropping a new episode each Wednesday, the filmed-on-location “Sunny” is based on the novel “The Dark Manual” by Colin O’Sullivan.

Though her humorous bent also is evident in her work as a commercial spokesperson, Jones has shown her dramatic chops in such movies as 2020’s “On the Rocks” (which also debuted in Apple TV+), 2018’s “Zoe” and 2010’s “The Social Network,” which features her prominently opposite Jesse Eisenberg, as Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, in the closing scene. That being said, lighter fare remains a sizable part of her resume, extending to her voice work in animated films including “Klaus” and “Spies in Disguise” (both released in 2019).

Jones has also contributed to projects as a writer, as shown by the 2012 movie “Celeste and Jesse Forever” (in which she also starred), a 2016 episode of the Netflix anthology series “Black Mirror” and the pilot for the 2023

“Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” (Available Now) NASCAR superstar Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) is at the top of his game — he is adored by fans, he has a trophy wife by his side and he is incredibly wealthy. But Ricky loses it all when French Formula One champion Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen) roars onto the scene. Ricky, with the help of his ruthless father, must pull himself out of the depths of despair and restore his honor on the racetrack.

Hulu series “The Other Black Girl.” And now, “Sunny” is maintaining the forecast for the variety in her work to continue.

‘Die Hard’ still brings the action

The debate over whether it is or is not a Christmas movie continues, but whatever any individual decides about that, “Die Hard” certainly is a milestone of the action genre.

The 1988 adventure — which Paramount+ With Showtime presents Sunday, July 28 — cemented the big-screen stardom Bruce Willis had aspired to after gaining initial fame through the television series “Moonlighting.” His smart-aleck brand of humor and massively independent image surely help to inform the character of John McClane, a New York police officer who goes to Los Angeles for the holiday season, hoping to win back his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia).

Jonathan Groff

OF GLEE ON FOX

Q: It was nice to see Jonathan Groff win a Tony Award recently. Can you remind me of the character he played on “Glee”?

A: He was in the Fox series from the start when it began in 2009, and he already was a Broadway veteran by that time, having gotten particular notice for “Spring Awakening” … which also brought him a Tony nomination, and which teamed him with Lea Michele, with whom he would work again in “Glee.”

His character in that show, Jesse St. James, was a principal performer in the singing group Vocal Adrenaline — rivals of New Directions, the group that included Rachel Berry (played by Michele). Jesse was dispatched to woo the hugely talented Rachel, the aim being to throw her off her game when it came to competition between the groups. However, things changed when he truly fell for her, and when he learned the secret that the coach of Vocal Adrenaline (played by Idina Menzel) was Rachel’s biological mother.

Bruce Willis in “Die Hard”

Not crazy about the West Coast to begin with, McClane has even less to like after he arrives at his spouse’s elaborate office building (the skyscraper formerly known as Fox Plaza, doubling for the film’s Nakatomi Plaza). It turns out he isn’t the only visitor: Arriving at virtually the same time is a band of criminals led by the debonair and coolly lethal Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), who’s intent on stealing a fortune in bearer bonds.

Little do the bad guys realize they’ll have the resourceful McClane to deal with, and not only does he have the larger picture of law and order to serve, he also wants to save his wife — who’s among the hostages taken by the unwelcome guests. He gets some help from the outside, thanks to a beat cop (“Family Matters” alum Reginald VelJohnson) who has a hard time believing the building is under siege at first, but McClane also has additional hurdles posed by overeager federal agents and a reporter (William Atherton) who isn’t above imperiling others to advance his career.

Though Groff had a reasonably sizable presence during the first season of “Glee,” he became a recurring player as the show went along, appearing only occasionally. His return in the series finale seems even more prophetic now where Groff is concerned, since Jesse and Rachel went to the Tony Awards as a married couple, with Jesse already being a Tony winner who was directing a Broadway production that Rachel was in.

Just before “Glee” ended, Groff returned to the New York stage by playing King George III in “Hamilton: An American Musical,” and he followed that Off-Broadway job with two stints in the role during the show’s Broadway run. He earned another Tony nomination for his performance, and he finally got the award last month for a revival of the Stephen Sondheim-composed “Merrily We Roll Along.”

‘Titanic’ sails again

The story had been told earlier in other films and television projects, but the Oscar-winning 1997 version of “Titanic” is the definitive one for many people. Being presented by AMC on Wednesday, July 31, writer-director James Cameron’s 1997 epic is a beautifully structured saga that cleverly takes the audience from contemporary times — as a treasure hunter (Bill Paxton) and his colleagues scour the ship’s sunken wreckage — back to its maiden voyage in 1912, when it was launched with much pomp and circumstance.

Two key characters are the ones who came to matter most to the vast majority of moviegoers: privileged Rose and stowaway Jack, roles that elevated Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio to superstardom. Billy Zane and Kathy Bates also star in the massive and impressive production that earned 11 Academy Awards, including those for best picture and best director. It also won for best original song, but the Celine Dion-performed “My Heart Will Go On” may be compressed or eliminated over the closing credits for this basic-cable showing.

Simone Biles eyeing strong comeback after 2020 Games

The 2024 Paris Olympics are in full swing. As Day 2 kicks off another exciting day of competition, the women’s gymnastics qualifications begin Sunday, July 28, at Bercy Arena in Paris. NBC and Peacock air all the action airing live. This year, many eyes will be on 27-year-old legendary American gymnast Simone Biles. Making her third appearance at the Olympics, Biles is the oldest U.S. women’s gymnast to compete at the Games in 72 years, putting her in an elite group of American gymnasts to make three separate Olympic teams.

After taking a two-year hiatus post-Tokyo 2020 due to mental health struggles, Biles made a triumphant return in 2023, quickly re-establishing her dominance by clinching the all-around titles at the U.S. Classic, the U.S. national championships and the world championships, becoming the most decorated gymnast in history.

Leading up to Paris 2024, Biles has only continued to dominate — an incredible performance at the Core Hydration Classic saw her finishing with a world-class allaround score of 117.225 and extending a record nine U.S. Open championship national title victories. But this didn’t come without stiff competition from fellow American gymnasts Shilese Jones and Suni Lee.

With a record 30 world championship medals, including 23 golds and seven Olympic medals, Biles is poised to make history once again, proving to the world why she remains the greatest of all time.

The seed of Saporito’s interest in leather work was planted during a visit to Morocco. A tour of a tannery in Fez, naturally ended in a gift shop, where Saporito picked up a leather duffle bag. Later, when facing a six-month, couch-bound recovery after tearing ligaments in his knee skiing at Big Sky Resort, Saporito knew he needed to keep his hands busy.

Though he had no intention of making boots, Saporito visited Brian Esslinger at Carter’s for advice. Esslinger, who now owns Black Sheep in Bozeman, is an expert at intricate tooling and saddle-making. In 15 minutes, he had shown Saporito the basics of leather work and sent him on his way with tools and materials.

“I went home and I tried to replicate this three-dimensional piece with zippers and all this hardware, which was very ambitious,” Saporito said. “But, you know, I had the time.”

After impressing himself, Saporito turned to smaller projects, making basic pieces like wallets for himself and friends and selling them at the Bogert Park farmers market. Business was slow.

“When you put your product out in the real world and you’re selling only to guys, you realize very quickly that guys are very bad shoppers, especially in a place where fashion or style isn’t paramount,” he said. Saporito expanded his product line to include tote bags with a more universal appeal, and Brick Bound’s business took off. Each piece — bags, wallets, leashes, fly holders and more — is defined by Saporito’s focus on quality and durability. Saporito isn’t one for flowery details.

industry, Saporito said, launching into a series of statistics. Most notably, he said, some 33 million cows are slaughtered in the U.S. each year (from 2020 to 2023, this number has ranged from 32 to 36 million, according to the USDA) and Hermann Oak can only tan about a tenth of the hides. Saporito considers this to be a much more sustainable option than “vegan leathers,” which are more often than not backed by some sort of plastic and lack the durability of animal-based leather.

Brick Bound is the antithesis of fast fashion. The products are meant to be used and loved. They are meant to last a lifetime and beyond.

“I want this bag to look at home as soon as it walks out the door in Bozeman and as soon as you get off the plane in Paris,” Saporito said. “I want to walk the line of European luxury and chicness, yet maintain that western quality and rugged durability.”

Most of his bags are solid colors, with the exception of a black splatter dye pattern that fittingly feels like an abstract cow print.

“I tell people when they come into my booth that my goal is to make simple things well, and that’s it,” Saporito said. “That’s really the only thing I try to do, and then everything else is an added bonus — if it looks good or it catches your attention or whatever.”

Most of the leather comes from St. Louis company Hermann Oak Leather, a family-owned tannery in business since 1881, though Saporito has also turned to Italian leather for some pieces. The

Both suppliers’ leather is vegetable tanned, a process that takes longer, but forgoes harsh chemicals. It also allows for the natural qualities in the leather to shine. The leather carries the reminder of scars, of bug bites and even of the brands on the cows, adding to the uniqueness of each piece.

With Brick Bound, Saporito is defining his own success. This can be difficult, he said, especially after watching most of the friends he grew up with in New Jersey go directly into high-powered finance jobs in “the city.”

“At the end of the day, working for myself, being able to make what I want, being able to say no to somebody is such a freedom in life that most people don’t get to experience,” he said.

Instead, Saporito’s success is in being his own boss, and in seeing the pieces he made with his own two hands out in the world.

“As a small business owner what’s nicer, what’s better than seeing your stuff out there being used?” Saporito asked.
