‘Incredibly unique’
RACHEL HERGET
For the Chronicle
Early Monday evening, in the mess hall of Cottonwood Canyon summer camp Yellowstone Alliance Adventures, Aidan McCormack has barely touched his dinner.
In less than 15 minutes, the entire 2024 Montana Youth Symphony cadre will gather for the first time in the camp’s gym — a three sided wooden structure overlooking the lower section of the camp and mountains
beyond. And the first piece on the rehearsal docket is McCormack’s five-minute, “Sun and Shadow on the Blackfoot.”
McCormack, who grew up in Missoula, won the Montana Youth Symphony’s inaugural composition competition, earning the honor of having his piece performed to open the orchestra’s gala concert on Sunday, Aug. 11.
Now a student at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, McCormack studies music theory and composition as well as economics. Most students at Vanderbilt double major, the 19-year-old said. He’s been exploring the business side of music through an administrative
internship with Wintergreen Music Festival in Virginia this summer, where he aided in scheduling and contract negotiations. He will follow up with data analysis and presentations for the festival director.
Though he played violin in last year’s Montana Youth Symphony, his instrument is tucked away this time around. McCormack paces slightly as the orchestra plays through the piece, then sits in front of a score, pencil in hand as rehearsal conductor Gordon Johnson works through sections of the piece, which was in part inspired by Norman McClean’s book “A River Runs Through It.”

“The Woman King” (Aug. 13)
The Woman King is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, the film follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (Viola Davis) as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.
OLIVER
“Smile”
(Aug. 15)
After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, a psychiatrist (Sosie Bacon) becomes increasingly convinced she is being threatened by an uncanny entity.
Oliver Platt has been in the acting game for a long time, but he’s having an especially fruitful time now.
Soon to enter his 10th season on the Wednesday NBC drama “Chicago Med,” he’s also seen on the widely acclaimed, FX-produced and Hulu-streamed series “The Bear,” and the two roles — both with ties to the Windy City — give him great variety. In “Chicago Med,” he plays hospital psychiatric chief Daniel Charles, who has faced plenty of his own challenges while also dealing with colleagues and patients. And in “The Bear,” he’s Jimmy “Cicero” Kalinowski (or “Uncle Jimmy”), a longtime friend and financial benefactor of the central family that runs a Chicago restaurant.
Canadian native Platt’s career dates back to his part as an FBI agent in director Jonathan Demme’s 1988 movie “Married to the Mob,” and he also had a visible role the same year in the Mike Nichols-directed “Working Girl.” Since then, it’s been virtually non-stop work for Platt across film, television and stage, and he has earned Primetime Emmy and Tony nominations along the way.
Standout film parts for Platt have included an attorney who tries to draw up an unusual contract for a couple (Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore) who will earn $1 million if the wife spends a night with another man (Robert Redford) in “Indecent Proposal,” and an engineer who sneaks aboard an airborne plane with a commando team to defeat terrorist hijackers in “Executive Decision” (1996).
Though TV has had most of Platt’s professional attention for the past decade, he still has managed to keep his hand in the movie world. He was featured in the recent comedy “Babes,” which marked the feature-directing debut of Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”). With “Chicago Med”
“Immaculate” (Aug. 16)
Sydney Sweeney stars as Cecilia, an American nun of devout faith, who is embarking on a new journey in a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside. Cecilia’s warm welcome quickly devolves into a nightmare as it becomes clear her new home harbours a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors.
returning and “The Bear” confirmed for a forthcoming fourth season, the home screen will remain Platt’s home base for at least a while more.

‘The Graduate’ still gets very high grades
Benjamin Braddock forever will be a little worried about his future.
And for good reason. If he’s not quite sure where he’s going at the start of director Mike Nichols’ 1967 classic “The Graduate” — which Turner Classic Movies shows Wednesday, Aug. 14, as part of a “Summer Under the Stars” day devoted to Anne Bancroft — he doesn’t have much cause to be any more certain in the picture’s famous climax, though it might appear on the surface that he’s charted his course.
What happens in-between is the stuff of which iconic movies are made.
Dustin Hoffman had been acting professionally for several years, largely on television, when Nichols made him an immediate star by casting him as very nervous college grad Benjamin (a part for which Robert Redford, Hoffman’s later “All the President’s Men” co-star, had tested).
After brilliantly setting up the privileged background from which Benjamin hails (the scuba suit in the swimming pool!), Nichols and screenwriters Buck Henry — who also has a great cameo as a hotel desk clerk — and Calder Willingham shift to the main story, the seduction of Benjamin by calculating family friend Mrs. Robinson (a sterling Bancroft, in a legendary role that Doris Day reportedly turned down).
Benjamin has his doubts about the secret affair, and those only are amplified when he reconnects with unsuspecting Robinson daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross, whose contribution to the film tends to be underrated beside her fellow “Graduate” stars).

OF MISTLETOE MURDERS (FORTHCOMING) ON HALLMARK CHANNEL
Q: I heard that Sarah Drew is making a new series for Hallmark Channel. What is it, and when will it be on?
A: The “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Everwood” alum – who has made something of a cottage industry out of starring in cable films, for Lifetime as well as for Hallmark – will appear in a show based on the podcast “Mistletoe Murders,” in which she’ll play the owner of a holiday-themed store who doubles as an amateur sleuth. She’s assisted in the cases she tackles by a police detective and his daughter, and she also harbors a secret that could dismantle everything for her if it’s discovered by others.
It makes sense that “Mistletoe Murders” (which currently is in production in Toronto) is expected to debut during the coming holiday season, and while that will make Drew a major part of Hallmark’s seasonal plans, she was very much a Lifetime employee during that period last year. Though she’s normally seen on camera in the projects she makes, she stayed behind the scenes as the writer and producer of “A Cowboy Christmas Romance,” which starred Jana Kramer and got extra attention for being a bit more spicy than Lifetime’s traditional holiday fare.
In 2022, Drew also was in a yuletide mode for Lifetime as the writer and star of “Reindeer Games Homecoming.” She’s been no stranger when it comes to Christmas-oriented tales, since her other projects have included “Christmas in Vienna,” “Christmas Pen Pals” and “Twinkle All the Way.” She also has stayed in business with Hallmark at other times of the year, two recent examples being the films “Branching Out” and “Guiding Emily.”

“Citizen Kane” remains a cinematic masterpiece classic corner
If you’re serious about loving movies, you likely know a lot about Orson Welles’ 1941 masterpiece “Citizen Kane” already. Regarded by some as the best film ever made, the drama – being presented by Turner Classic Movies on Thursday, Aug. 15, as part of a “Summer Under the Stars” tribute day saluting co-star Joseph Cotten – showcases producer, director and co-writer Welles as a media titan partially based on William Randolph Hearst, who was furious about being used as a model for such a depiction.
Stylistically innovative in many ways, the picture was edited by Robert Wise, later a director of note himself. (“The Sound of Music,” “West Side Story,” etc.). The cast of supporting players from the Welles-co-founded Mercury Theatre also includes Agnes Moorehead, Ray Collins and Everett Sloane. Fernandez looks to keep positive momentum going on home soil
The tennis world returns to Canada for the 2024 National Bank Open, presented by Rogers. The tournament kicks off Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, with all matches airing live on Tennis Channel.
One of Canada’s top tennis talents is poised to have her best performance of the 2024 campaign, as 21-year-old sensation Leylah Fernandez has had a season full of growth, including boasting an impressive grass court record of 7-2 on the season.
Fernandez pulled out a spectacular performance at Wimbledon this year, defeating Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti in the first round, winning 80% of both first-serve points and net points to outscore her opponent 72-57 on total points — solidly proving her ability to compete against higher-ranked opponents.
Unfortunately for Fernandez, she has yet to advance past the second round, falling short to No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki. In a thrilling three-set match, Fernandez nearly clinched the victory before running out of gas in the third set, with a final tally of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 for Wozniacki.
Despite this loss, Fernandez continues to prove her ability to excel on the sport’s biggest stages — including advancing to her first grass final earlier this season at Eastbourne International.
Currently ranked 23rd in the world, look for Fernandez to come out focused and using her speed, agility and powerful baseline play as she prepares to compete against the best of the best.
Don’t miss any of the action as Leylah Fernandez continues to chase greatness at the 2024 National Bank Open, presented by Rogers, kicking off Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto and airing on Tennis Channel.

In 2023, an original composition by board president Ilse-Mari Lee opened the very first Montana Youth Symphony concert. This year, the board wanted to keep their focus on the youth, calling for submissions of a five-minute celebratory orchestral piece.
“It’s all new,” said rehearsal conductor and artistic director Gordon Johnson, a Montana music stalwart who conducted the Great Falls Symphony for 35 years and now chairs the board of trustees for the Great Falls Public Schools. “This is only the second year. So the orchestra is growing exponentially. I think it’s going to become more competitive as time goes by.”
The 2024 symphony orchestra features around 60 musicians, all teens or young adults who live in Montana or have studied at a Montana high school or university. Musicians are selected through a competitive audition process. Unlike many opportunities available to young musicians, participation in the Montana Youth Symphony is free. In addition to room and board, musicians receive a stipend and travel assistance.
“It makes it incredibly unique,” Johnson said. “All of these kids, myself included, have been to

camps all our lives — but you have to pay a tuition.”
Without required tuition, the symphony hopes to imply a sense of professionalism for its musicians, Johnson explained. To make it happen, the Montana Youth Symphony relies on support from a variety of foundations and private donors, operating on a budget of just $150,000.
The orchestra has expanded in its second year, adding a low brass section with tuba and trombones as well as larger string sections.
“That’s in line with our mission to keep it growing, so we can do bigger, more romantic repertoire,” said Adam Collins, a board member, cellist and lecturer in the School of Music at

the University of Montana. Another change this year is the location. In 2023, the orchestra stayed in the dorms of Montana State University and rehearsed in the music building. But with classes starting on Aug. 24, the university is already starting to fill up with orientations and music camps of its own. The board finally landed on Yellowstone Alliance Adventures, a faithbased organization that hosts a variety of gatherings, from 4-H camps to recovery groups, according to executive director Jim Hawthorne. The camp can sleep up to 200 people, though Hawthorne said that exceeds the capacity of the modern (and airconditioned) bunk houses and requires the use of wall tents.

With only four days before the Montana Youth Symphony departs for Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and the Grand Teton Music Festival, participants won’t have much time to participate in the camp offerings like zip lining and even a water slide. Cardcaptor Sakura: Collector’s Edition. Graphic Novel Fiction. The manga series from the 90s is now beautifully illustrated and I mean beeA-you-tiff-lly. Once in Wyoming, the students will take in the festival’s orchestra, and have the chance to work with its conductor, Sir Donald Runnicles, the general music director for Deutsche Oper Berlin.
“From an artistic standpoint, what makes us unique is that we have one of the world’s greatest conductors come in,” Johnson said.
Runnicles will return to Bozeman with the orchestra to conduct its gala concert.
Back at Monday’s rehearsal, McCormack has taken in the first live run-through of “Sun and Shadow on the Blackfoot.” He couldn’t help express gratitude for the rare opportunity for a young composer, and awe at hearing his piece performed, even if not yet gala-ready.
“It’s electric,” he said. “It’s very exciting and it’s happening all at once, but now it’s done I kind of know where we stand.”
Montana Youth Symphony’s 2024 Gala Concert is at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug.11, in Bozeman’s Wilson Auditorium, 404 W. Main St. The concert will feature Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto with Tanner Jorden as soloist, Mozart’s Symphony No. 25, and the premiere performance of McCormack’s “Sun and Shadow on the Blackfoot.”
