Becoming a reality
RACHEL HERGETT for the Chronicle
‘Real family adventure’
When Porter Blanchard devised The Pasture Drive-In for a business plan assignment in Lexi Glaus’s entrepreneurship class at Manhattan High School in 2020, no one expected the idea to be made reality. And certainly no one expected the drive-in movie theater located in a field near Amsterdam and Churchill to have grown into a familyfriendly community fixture four years later.
Porter’s plan was put into action amid pandemic lockdowns in spring of 2020, and was an immediate success. He paid back a loan from Youth Entrepreneurs within two showings and was later awarded $6,000 through the organization’s Big Idea competition.
Porter’s mother, Keeley, remembers
thinking a drive-in theater was a good idea at the time. With one daughter called back from her study-abroad trip to Jerusalem, all six Blanchard children were at home and could pitch in to make Porter’s idea a reality.
“It was a real family adventure,” she said.
Her husband, Jon, was a bit more hesitant — especially because the field slated for the drive-in theater was their only field with a pivot irrigation system. Plans went ahead, and a section of the field was mowed to make way for vehicles. The larger field still yields two hay crops, Keeley explained, and the family was set to bale this week.
“Just where everybody parks, we don’t get that much hay,” she said.
Porter, as reported by the Chronicle in 2020, planned to use his portion of the proceeds to fund a two-year mission trip
to Guatemala after his graduation. With restricted International travel, his mission took him first to Houston, Texas, then to Guatemala. But both were funded by the Pasture Drive-In project. He is now a student at Brigham Young University-Idaho, studying accounting.
“It’s just really cool to see where this has led,” Keeley said. “It’s been fun for us to see him set goals and then, you know, here he is four years later, and he’s been achieving those goals.”
The Pasture has grown by word of mouth, and Facebook and Instagram pages remain the go-to method of advertising. Infrastructure around the field has sprouted somewhat organically. When the original movie screen, made of a series of tarps sewn together and stretched in a wood frame, blew over in January 2021, the family had to make a decision. Would they keep
going or was the Pasture Drive-In kaput?
The decision came down to two main factors. One, the Blanchards had purchased a “really nice projector” for the theater project. And two, running the Pasture was fun.
For the first two years, the family sold concessions from under pop-up canopy tents. Then Jon found a load of lumber in need of repurposing on Facebook marketplace and built a concession stand. They have updated the bridge that vehicles must navigate to enter the field and most recently, added a stage with the help of Billion Auto Group and Ignite the Fire. The stage played host to a “Napoleon Dynamite” dance-off last week. Next summer, the Blanchards hope to offer live music before the films.

Novelist John Grisham’s law thrillers have been rich resources for moviemakers, and “The Firm” is one of the most entertaining results to date.
The 1993 drama – which MGM+ Marquee presents Friday, Aug. 23 – runs a bit shy of three hours, but it’s to the credit of veteran director Sydney Pollack and his team that its pace rarely if ever flags, and it remains thoroughly watchable throughout. The premiere episode of this next volume focuses on the 2009 murder of the legendary Steve McNair — affectionately known as “Air” McNair — an athlete best known for his impressive 13-season run as an NFL quarterback. With 31,304 career passing yards and 174 touchdowns across his career, McNair had significant success with the Tennessee Titans, leading “the franchise for 11 seasons (1994-2005), including its move from Houston (Oilers) to Tennessee in 1996,” according to The Tennessean. McNair retired from the league in 2008, planning to spend time with his wife and four young children, but his life was cut tragically short only a year later as he was shot and killed by his 20-year-old mistress, Sahel “Jenni” Kazemi, during an apparent murder-suicide that took place in Nashville, Tenn., in July 2009. At the time of his death, McNair was only 36 years old.
Directed by Rodney Lucas (“Black Hercules,” 2024) and Taylor Alexander Ward (“Shaq”), this upcoming “UNTOLD” feature will shed further light on McNair’s complex life and impressive career, delving into the circumstances of his untimely death as it offers a deeper understanding of a true sports legend.

Answers:
Jamie Lee Curtis
OF OPERATION PETTICOAT ON ABC
Q: I understand that one of Jamie Lee Curtis’s first jobs was on a TV series called “Operation Petticoat.” Was that based on the movie of the same name that her father Tony starred in?
A: It was. She was a regular cast member in the first season of the show, which aired in 1977 and 1978 on ABC, and she played one of the Army nurses rescued by a submarine crew in the South Pacific during World War II … and the women then stayed on board, giving the sitcom its premise. That was very much the same plot as the 1959 film, directed by Blake Edwards, that starred Tony Curtis and Cary Grant (the latter also a producer of the picture through his own company). In the TV version, John Astin assumed the role of the ship’s commander, first played by Grant, with Richard Gilliland in Curtis’s earlier part. It’s interesting to note that one of the movie’s supporting players was Gavin MacLeod, who would become a “skipper” himself years later as Captain Merrill Stubing on the popular series “The Love Boat.”
For Jamie Lee Curtis, “Operation Petticoat” was one of many series made by Universal Television that she appeared on around that time; others included “Quincy, M.E.,” “Columbo” and “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.” After she left “Operation Petticoat” (which replaced much of its first-year cast for what turned out to be a short second season), she quickly made a bigger mark for herself in a movie that primarily defined her screen image for many years afterward, the original 1978 version of the thriller “Halloween.”
Last year, Curtis became an Oscar winner for her performance in 2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which also earned her Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards, among a number of other honors.

Paul Rudd
OF SISTERS ON NBC
Q: Paul Rudd seems to be everywhere nowadays. Where did he get his start?
A: It’s hard to define a screen star’s “start.”
Is it their first taste of performing for a crowd? For Rudd, that was probably in high school dramatics, which inspired him to major in theater at the University of Kansas.
545062-1; Ruckus; Marina Kessler Jewelry; Color; 2 x 2.34; XPos: 357 YPos: -0,
Maybe it’s their first time on screen. For Rudd, that would be a TV ad for the Super Nintendo video game system in 1991.
But when most people think of an actor’s start, they’re thinking of their first “significant” or “notable” role — the first time they got real screen time and contributed to the plot. For Rudd, that was in “Sisters.”
“Sisters” was a popular NBC sitcom that debuted in 1991. Rudd joined in the show’s third season, in 1992, playing Kirby Philby, an aspiring filmmaker who married the daughter of one of the show’s leads. That daughter, by the way, was played by a young Ashley Judd (“Kiss the Girls,” 1997), also pre-fame.
Rudd was a supporting star on the show until 1995, during which time he was able to moonlight on a few other projects, such as made-for-TV dramas “Moment of Truth: Stalking Back” (1993) and “Runaway Daughters” (1994).
Shortly after leaving “Sisters,” he landed his first big-screen role in the 1995 comedy classic “Clueless.” Many would say that this was his “start,” since it’s a role for which he’s still remembered today

Hepburn and two Fondas spend time
‘On Golden Pond’
While it was a family affair to a great degree, with Jane Fonda producing and co-starring with her father Henry, “On Golden Pond” also serviced Katharine Hepburn extremely well, resulting in her fourth Oscar win. Still a record for any performer, Turner Classic Movies presents the 1981 adaptation of Ernest Thompson’s play on Sunday, Aug. 18, as part of an all-day “Summer Under the Stars” salute to Hepburn. Henry Fonda also won an Academy Award for the drama, which earned an Oscar for Thompson’s screenplay.
A senior-citizen couple is joined by their daughter at their summer cottage, and her ongoing estrangement from her father causes considerable tension, even after the arrival of her fiance and his son (Dabney Coleman, Doug McKeon). In interviews, Jane Fonda has confirmed that the nature of her character’s relationship with her father’s alter ego mirrored their real-life dealings, giving the Mark Rydell-directed film an extra subtext. The lovely music score is by Dave Grusin.

“Predator” (FX, Sunday, Aug. 18): Arnold Schwarzenegger was one of cinema’s top box-office draws at the time of this 1987 action fest, but he had formidable competition in the movie from the title character, a lethal alien that stalks the members of a military rescue team in a South American rainforest. The soldiers intend to save hostages being held by guerrillas, but their own survival soon becomes paramount because of the extraterrestrial’s presence. Carl Weathers and Jesse Ventura also star for director John McTiernan (“Die Hard”), and Kevin Peter Hall (“Harry and the Hendersons”) is inside the predator costume.
“The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!” (MGM+, Wednesday, Aug. 21): The Abrahams-Zucker-Abrahams troika of writer-directors only got six episodes to apply their humorous “Airplane!” sensibility to the ABC show “Police Squad!,” but the show ended up yielding a hugely successful trio of movie comedies that started with this 1988 bounty of laughs. Leslie Nielsen reprised his TV part as Frank Drebin, a clumsy cop who managed to save the day despite himself. George Kennedy, Priscilla Presley, O.J. Simpson and Ricardo Montalban also had prominent roles.
Baz Luhrmann celebrity update
OF
THE
GREAT GATSBY
ON WARNER BROS.
Q: When is Baz Luhrmann releasing another movie? I love his style.
A: I think it’s safe to say Baz Luhrmann won’t be releasing another movie for a while. The director of hits such as “Moulin Rouge!” (2001) and “The Great Gatsby” (2013) freely admits that he likes to take his time once he starts a project, and he also admits that he hasn’t even started on anything yet.
His most recent production, the Hulu miniseries “Faraway Downs,” was released in the fall of 2023. Two months later, Variety magazine tried to pin him down on his next
one, but he didn’t have an answer.
“In my mind, anyway. I’ve made myself a deadline that by the end of the year, I will be committed to what I’m going to do. Because I never make [films] that often, and when I do they take years, so that’s one decision that you cannot get wrong.”
He said he had a few possible ideas he was considering, including an adaptation of the classic Soviet novel “The Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov. But just a few months ago, Variety reported that he has since abandoned that project. So we’re no closer to knowing what his next movie will be.
BY ADAM THOMLISON
But even if we knew, we’d still be a long way from seeing it.
As he said in the interview, Luhrmann takes years to make a movie. There was only one year between “Faraway Downs” and his previous one, 2022’s “Elvis,” but that was a huge anomaly (it was also an anomaly because he doesn’t do a lot of TV).
He’s averaged five years between releases. However, a whopping nine years passed between “Elvis” and his previous big-screen project, 2013’s “The Great Gatsby.”
Morris, Sounders look to continue winning season against a strong United squad
The 2024 Major League Soccer season continues with another regular season matchup between two teams looking to continue climbing up the standings. Seattle Sounders FC takes on Minnesota United FC Saturday, Aug. 24, at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minn., with the match airing live on Fox. Sitting in the middle of the pack of the MLS Western Conference standings, the Seattle Sounders have had a respectable campaign this year, with 10 wins, eight losses and seven draws. More impressively, the Sounders have been stellar defensively, boasting a conference-low 29 goals against — making them a formidable opponent for any team in the league.
A key contributor to the success the Sounders have found this season is fan favorite Jordan Morris, the 29-year-old forward who is enjoying another impressive offensive season. Morris’s nine goals in 25 games prove his ability to score pivotal goals in big matches — including his lone goal against Austin FC to secure another Sounders victory.
On the other side of the pitch, Minnesota United will be feeling the departure of its two key defensive pieces in Bakaye Dibassy and Brent Kallman. This major hole in the team’s back end makes Minnesota’s hold on a playoff spot that much more tenuous. The new additions of Alejandro Bran and Victor Eriksson have certainly strengthened the squad defensively. However, Minnesota will need to address its defensive woes moving forward if it hopes to find success in the future.
With Morris seemingly in top form — and arguably the highlight of the season for fans, leading his team in goals — the Sounders will look to make the most of his performance as they aim to finish off the 2024 campaign on a strong note.
Full name: Jordan Perry Morris
Birthdate: Oct. 26, 1994 (29)
Birthplace: Seattle, Washington, U.S.
Height/weight: 6-0/185 pounds
Team(s): Seattle Sounders FC (2016-present)
The Pasture Drive-In really has become a family project, with the kids tackling mowing and maintenance in the parking area and setting up the posts and flags that mark the rows.
Porter got married in May, and he and his wife have been home with the family this summer, also pitching in on the concession stand. Jon runs the sound and projector. Youngest son Oliver is usually at the gate, welcoming people at their car windows and collecting money as they line up to enter. The cost is $10 per person, or $25 per vehicle, in cash, though cards and Venmo are accepted at the concession stand. Daughter Claire, at 13, helps run the concession stand, where mark-up is also kept to a minimum on sodas, popcorn and candy.
“We’ve purposely kept the prices low,” Keeley said. “And when people call and ask if they can bring food in or tailgate, we say ‘yes,’ because we have a lot of kids and it’s so expensive to go anywhere.”
Keeley reveles in the feedback from community members, and especially fellow parents. When she commented to one mother that it was her second movie in a row, the mother said “Oh, this is my happy place because I come here and my kids can just run and play and they’re outside. I love it,” Keeley recounted.
She loves that local teens have a hangout on movie nights, with some lingering up to an hour after the screening, or coming early to partake in corn hole, volleyball or kickball games. On Saturday, Aug. 17, a screening of “Kung Fu Panda 4” will serve as the annual Manhattan Potato Festival weekend fundraiser for the Manhattan
High School senior class. Gates open at 6 p.m. and planned activities include lawn-mower races and sumo-suit wrestling. The movie starts at 9 p.m.
As the summer goes on and the sun sets earlier, the start time edges closer to dinner time, and the Blanchard family has been considering more hearty options. For last week’s “Napoleon Dynamite” screening, tots and quesadillas were on the menu. For Saturday, a pulled pork dinner is planned.
Upcoming films include “Secondhand Lions” on Aug. 23 and “Beauty and the Beast” on Sept. 13. Keeley also hopes to show “Hotel Transylvania 3” in October, after being snowed out of Halloweeen-themed movies two of the past three years.
While snow may halt the films, patrons aren’t stopped by Montana summer rains, ducking into vehicles as showers pass overhead. Sometimes, the storms even add to the atmosphere, such as distant lightning that punctuated scenes from “The Man From Snowy River” during a July screening.
While the number of people ranges from show to show, with Harry Potter movies remaining the most popular, the Pasture can accommodate up to 150 cars. And with such a large hay field to work with, there’s room to grow.
“I don’t imagine that we’ll do this forever, but maybe we do,” Keeley said.
The Pasture Drive-In Theater is located at 360 Little Camp Creek Way in Manhattan. For more information, visit www. facebook.com/ThePastureDriveIn/, find the Pasture on Instagram at @the_pasture_drivein, email thepasturedrivein@ gmail.com, or call (406) 580-4211.

ic and romance-heavy Netflix series. Now streaming the first half of its fourth season, with the second half slated to drop Sept. 12, the show — created by executive producer Darren Star (known for “Sex and the City” and “Beverly Hills, 90210”) — restarted with Emily Cooper (Collins) in quite a complicated set of personal circumstances.
Emily was trying to help her chef neighbor Gabriel (Lucas Bravo, “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” 2022) earn a Michelin Star when he made the sudden decision to marry his privileged ex-girlfriend Camille (Camille Razat, “Disparue”), who is aware of his deep affection for her friend Emily, which Emily reciprocates … but Camille’s pregnancy also became known. “Snatch”) to break things off with her, before she also ran into professional difficulty with co-worker Julien (Samuel Arnold, “National Theatre Live: Antony & Cleopatra,” 2018).
Season 4 of “Emily in Paris” has arrived a bit earlier in the year than it usually does, due to the fact that it had to start production earlier than normal. Though it was delayed by last year’s entertainment industry strikes, the series had to begin shooting sooner in this calendar year because outdoor film production has been suspended for several months (from mid-June to mid-September) to accommodate the Olympic and Paralympic Games. However, Italy also figures into the show’s fourth year in a major way.
Though Collins is also known for playing Snow
White in the 2012 movie “Mirror Mirror” and Fantine in a 2018-19 British miniseries of “Les Miserables,” it can be argued that Emily is her signature role to date. She also stars in the recently released action film “MaXXXine,” which has helped to display her versatility — but numerous “Emily” fans are undoubtedly happy and content to be watching her European adventures of the heart as they stream again.
