Five years of fairies

Random Acts of Silliness’ fairy village returns

With 12 unique concerts designed to delight music lovers of all tastes, you’ll experience some of the most extraordinary music ever composed.

Bumblewood returns

A bit of magic is returning to the trails around Bozeman this week as the veil is lifted on this year’s Bumblewood Thicket Fairy Village, an art installation featuring 20 fairysized dwellings, businesses and other structures created by local artists, aka “fairy architects.”

“Bumblewood Thicket has become a beloved tradition that brings joy and wonder to all,” Bozeman mayor Terry Cunningham stated in a city press release. “It celebrates what makes Bozeman special — community, creativity, and a love for the outdoors.”

The fairy village, created by Random Acts of Silliness in partnership with the Gallatin Valley Land Trust and the City of Bozeman, will be accessible from Friday, Aug. 30 to Sunday, Sept. 22 on the public trails of Glen Lake Rotary Park at

830 Manley Road. This year, Bumblewood Thicket will be revealed with a special ceremony that honors Random Acts of Silliness’ commitment to building community through whimsy and creativity.

present Random Acts of Silliness with a ceremonial key to the city, the first such key awarded in six years. The brief event will take place at the main entrance to Bumblewood Thicket.

“Random Acts of Silliness has inspired community magic for years through a variety of enchanting programs and interactive installations,” Cunningham stated.

Scuttlebutt among the fairies is that Bumblewood Thicket mayor Rowena Dimpletoes has something in store for her human neighbors as well.

“It’s an incredible honor for the whole Random Acts of Silliness team, and the community who has shown up to support Random Acts of Silliness and say ‘this is something that we want in our community,’” said Danielle Thomsen, the “executive enhancement director” for Random Acts of Silliness. “Everybody benefits from having joyful art and more play

in their lives.”

Tours of Bumblewood Thicket are self-guided, free and open to all from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The village entrance is located .3 miles from the Bozeman Beach entrance, and the walk around the village is .25 miles. A free “Fairy Grove” performance featuring local musicians, actors and dancers will take place on Saturdays from Aug. 31 to Sept. 21 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Reservations are currently full, but wait list spots are available for the free performance and Thomsen said that Random Acts of Silliness will try to open up as many seats as possible in the available space.

Bumblewood Thicket took root in 2020, when Thomsen’s family and their neighbors created an installation in Grafs Park on Bozeman’s southside — specifically in an area the Thomsen family had long called “Fairy Trail,” simply because it looked like a place that fairies would choose to live.

Thomsen remembers walking the trails to check the village each day, greeted by passerby who conspiratorially whispered about the magical fairies that had set up shop in the area. Their shared excitement and the fanciful additions that others added to the installation were more than enough to convince Thomsen that people loved the project. Wanting to expand on the idea, Thomsen reached out to the Gallatin Valley Land Trust, a Bozeman nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving open space and enhancing the trail system.

As content as Arthur might remain to stay ensconced in his world of bubble baths and toy trains, two things change him: his relationship with his stern manservant Hobson (John Gielgud, in a deservedly Oscar-winning performance), which takes an unexpected turn; and Arthur’s newfound affection for sassy waitress Linda (Minnelli), who might inspire him not to go through with his arranged marriage ... which would be a turn his family would not want.

In many ways, “Arthur” is a modern fairy tale, and it takes Moore’s sense of wonderment and impishness to pull it off fully. He goes in and out of that state so convincingly, it’s never a disappointment when he returns to it after seemingly having made strides toward maturity

Courting couples: ‘The Other Way’ Season 6 welcomes wearisome couples

With a brand-new season getting underway Sunday, Sept. 1, on TLC, meet the couples of “90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days” seventh season.

Joining Americans as they travel overseas to meet their long-distance love interests — this time around to Nigeria, Philippines, Ghana, Poland, Brazil, Jordan, South Africa and Croatia — this reality series follows the couples as they meet in person for the first time, after embarking on exclusively online courtships. Filled with drama, romance, heartbreak and more, the series introduces a slate of

couples facing the realities of getting to know each other’s customs, idiosyncrasies and daily habits, bringing some pairs together while others return to the U.S. having said “goodbye” for good.

This season, “Before the 90 Days” joins eight couples formed around the globe, spanning from Texan Tigerlily, 41, and her 23-year-old Jordanian partner, Adnan, to a couple with blind faith and a Nevada native meeting his Filipino sweetheart for the first time.

After leaving a difficult marriage, Tigerlily vowed to never marry again. That is, until she met a young model from Jordan on social media, Adnan, and the two quickly developed a relationship. After only four months of talking, Tigerlily now has plans to marry Adnan on the day she arrives in West Asia, much to her friends’ great concern.

Much like Tigerlily, 38-year-old Rayne — a farmer from New Mexico — is said to face ample uncertainty from friends and family as she dives headfirst into a relationship with

34-year-old Chidi of Nigeria. The two have been in an online relationship for the past five years, but after learning her partner was blind, those closest to Rayne began expressing their concerns that she wasn’t ready for the pressures of being with a blind person.

After being in a strictly virtual relationship for years, the reality of being together can be stark for many. For Nevada native Loren, 33, for example, meeting his partner in person might just be the beginning of the end. He’s head over heels for Faith, 31, a transgender woman from the Philippines, but despite his devotion, Loren knows he’ll have to be honest about his financial situation and less-than-monogamous tendencies now that he and Faith are face-to-face.

Whether these international couples will make it down the aisle is still up in the air, but with engagements on the horizon and an all-clear for takeoff, Season 7 of “90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days” premieres Sunday, Sept. 1, on TLC.

Carol Burnett ce l e b rity

OF THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW ON CATCHY COMEDY, METV

Q: Why are some repeats of “The Carol Burnett Show” an hour long, while others are only a half-hour long?

A: Originally, the classic comedy-variety series ran for an hour weekly during its 1967-78 tenure on CBS, when it earned a total of 25 Primetime Emmy Awards. It was shown in that form during a recent weekend “Binge” marathon on Catchy Comedy, but soon after the original run ended, the episodes from five of its seasons were edited into a 30-minute format — largely focused on the comedy content, though musical sequences sometimes were kept in, too — and the show was renamed “Carol Burnett and Friends.”

Those edited programs have long been a weekday attraction on MeTV, but the issue has been confused a bit more by the fact that the program also is known there presently as “The Carol Burnett Show” in its half-hour form. Arguably the best way to tell the lengths apart before a viewing is simply to look at a programming guide and see how long the show is slated for, 30 minutes or 60 minutes.

Burnett, who has made Primetime Emmy history this year as the oldest female comedy nominee ever with her current supporting-actress bid for Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale,” has very actively helped to promote direct-marketing sales of “The Carol Burnett Show” DVDs by participating in commercials for them. (She even has autographed some of the sets.) However, different collections culled from the series also are available from various merchants, either in physical stores or via online sellers.

Chi McBride

OF HAWAII FIVE-0 ON CBS

Q: What ever happened to Chi McBride? For a while in the ‘00s, it seemed like he was the next big thing, but I haven’t seen much of him since.

A: Chi McBride was indeed one of the buzziest actors of the 2000s, thanks to successively larger roles in talked-about shows such as “Boston Public” and the cultishly beloved late ‘00s sitcom “Pushing Daisies,” alongside big-screen hits such as “Gone in 60 Seconds” (2000) and “I, Robot” (2004).

In some ways, his profile was harmed by finding a little stability. Those shows and films attracted a lot of attention, but they were all over relatively quickly (“Boston Public” was the longest-lasting one, but even it was canceled after four years).

Then, in 2013, he joined the ensemble of “Hawaii Five-0,” an already successful show entering its fourth season. Given that it was already established, it had also lost a lot of the buzz — it was, by that point, nothing more or less than a very highly rated, solid performer that reliably drew in millions of eyeballs for CBS every week.

Unfortunately, even reliable hits have to end eventually, as “Hawaii Five-0” did in 2020. Since then, McBride has been looking for his next big project. His biggest shot was the 2022 CBS sitcom “How We Roll,” but it was canceled after one season.

But, he’s taking another run at sitcom success right now. He has a role in the upcoming Netflix series “Little Sky,” currently in post-production. No release date has been announced yet.

Howard Hessman stars in which 1980’s sitcom?

‘Die Hard 2’ hands Bruce Willis more action

“How can the same thing happen to the same guy twice?” Bruce Willis has good reason to express that query as his New York cop alter ego John McClane finds himself in yet more unexpected peril in “Die Hard 2,” the Christmas Eveset 1990 sequel directed by action specialist Renny Harlin (“Cliffhanger”) that FX shows Thursday, Sept. 5, as part of a marathon of all the Willis-starring “Die Hard” adventures.

McClane is waiting for his wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) to arrive at Washington, D.C.’s Dulles International Airport when the site’s air-traffic system is overtaken by terrorists bent on freeing a soon-to-arrive police prisoner. Getting little help from the argumentative airport police chief (“NYPD Blue’s” Dennis Franz), McClane works through the underbelly and backrooms of the facility to try to thwart the plot in his own way. The script was adapted from a novel that had nothing to do with the “Die Hard” franchise initially, but ended up servicing it very well. William Atherton and Reginald VelJohnson also return from the first picture.

“Because I Said So” (Hulu, streaming): Though this 2007 comedy might seem lightweight in the surface, it’s notable for providing a solid dose of a charming Mandy Moore before she went in to prove her dramatic chops on the NBC series “This Is Us.” Here, she plays one of the daughters of a woman (Diane Keaton) who can’t help but meddle in her children’s lives … and for the chef played by Moore, that causes problems with two romantic interests (Gabriel Macht, Tom Everett Scott). Lauren Graham and Piper Perabo portray Moore’s sisters in the very appealing cast.

“The Odd Couple” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, Sept. 1): Neil Simon’s stage classic has had several incarnations, one of the most successful being this 1970-75 sitcom, presented here in a “Binge” running throughout the weekend. (This was scheduled for mid-July, but postponed for a tribute to Bob Newhart.) Tony Randall and Jack Klugman play highly dissimilar roommates Felix and Oscar, who manage to endure each other’s quirks … though whether they’ll be able to continue doing so often is in question. This was one of several successful comedy series executive-produced by Garry Marshall (“Happy Days,” “Laverne & Shirley”) during that decade.

Eve Best celebrity update

OF HOUSE OF THE DRAGON ON HBO

Q: I loved the actress playing Rhaenys on “House of the Dragon” — she’s been the best part of the show for me. I feel like I’ve seen her before, though — have I? And is she doing anything else?

A: Whether you’ve seen Eve Best before depends largely, though not entirely, on whether you were a “Nurse Jackie” fan — but whether you’ll be excited about her next project or not definitely hinges on it.

You’re not alone in citing Best’s performance as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen as a highlight of HBO’s “House of the

Dragon” (the term “fan favorite” has been tossed around a lot). But the swordsand-castles fantasy show is miles away from her biggest prior role, in the utterly grounded and modern “Nurse Jackie,” a comedy that aired from 2009 to 2015 on HBO’s competitor network, Showtime. She played Dr. Eleanor O’Hara, a close friend and colleague to the titular, drug-addicted Jackie (Edie Falco, “The Sopranos”).

It’s her biggest pre-”House of the Dragon” role, and it’s poised to be her next role as well. It was announced in the spring that “Nurse Jackie’s” writers and

producers are starting work on a sequel miniseries, to be released on Amazon Prime instead of Showtime, and Best will be involved. It’s just now in pre-production, though, so don’t expect to see it any time soon.

If you don’t remember Best wearing scrubs, you may also have seen her in any one of a few miniseries she did, such as 2014’s “The Honorable Woman” or the A&E drama “Shackleton” back in 2002. Or, you may remember her in a small but notable turn as Wallis Simpson in the smash-hit 2010 biopic “The King’s Speech.”

Burns looks to end two-fight losing skid against Brady at UFC Fight Night

Fight fans around the world get set for another epic welterweight clash as UFC Fight Night: Burns Vs. Brady kicks off Saturday, Sept. 7, at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The preliminary fights, as well as the main event, will be broadcast live on ESPN. Coming off back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, against Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena, Gilbert “Durinho” Burns is set to come into this fight hot — another loss could alter the trajectory of his chances at another title shot. Burns is the more experienced fighter going into this match, having fought the best of the best since making his UFC debut in 2014. Durinho’s exceptional fighting IQ, paired with his explosive and timely striking, is rounded out by a world-class Brazilian jiu-jitsu background — all things that make him a very real threat to Brady.

Across the octagon is a rising star in the welterweight division, Sean Brady. Holding an impressive 16-1-0 record, takedowns play a major role in Brady’s success, with the fighter boasting a 50% takedown percentage. The only loss of his career so far has been to Belal Muhammad, in the second round via TKO at UFC 280. Prior to the loss, Brady was on a five-fight winning streak, and since then he’s been reminding fans and opponents why he’s an up-and-coming phenom by staying firmly in the win column — including winning his last fight against Kelvin Gastelum by submission last December.

Meanwhile, the co-main event will see Steve Garcia take on Kyle Nelson in a featherweight bout that’s sure to be exciting, as both fighters look to make a statement for themselves in the rankings.

“I will always think this was a silver lining as COVID — that everything was so scary and topsy-turvy that people were really open to trying, you know, new things,” Thomsen said.

GVLT was more than willing to lend a hand and helped Thomsen secure a space on the Gallagator Trail for the fairies to appear at the end of summer 2020.

“The incredible creativity of these local artists introduces a growing number of people, young and old, to local trails each year and increases their comfort outdoors, which can provide a lifetime of physical and mental health benefits,” GVLT executive director Chet Work stated in a press release from the city of Bozeman.

The second village was pretty informal, and came together over the span of about a month. At the time, Random Acts of Silliness was still more of an idea than an organization, yet Thomsen called up creative friends and artists, asking them if they were interested or knew other people who may be. Then, when construction was complete, she met them on the trail to pick their spots.

“I remember the first day when everyone was installing, like seeing these incredible creations artists had made and just peals of laughter and delight from the people who were discovering it on the trail, even as it was going in,” said Thomsen. “And it was

like this full-body experience of, ‘oh my gosh, this is something really special.’”

Now in its fifth summer, Bumblewood Thicket is set to bring in even more visitors than the 18,000 who walked its trails in 2023. Community members may also write letters to the fairies and place them in the fairy mailbox, which saw 4,000 letters last year. Also new this year, each fairy structure is designed to glow, adding some extra magic to evening visits.

Twenty teams of fairy architects have created structures such as the International Tooth Fairy Trading Academy, Sweet Pea Birth Center, Flossie’s Candy Emporium and a home for Mayor Dimpletoes. Also on the list is a return of the Little Fae Library, which made an appearance in the 2020 Gallagator Trail village called Flutterby Thicket.

Architects must submit an application with specifications about their

intended design, which are then narrowed down by the Random Acts of Silliness team. Guidelines speak to size, placement, durability and materials, which are mostly natural objects, though one piece in the upcoming installation incorporates car parts. According to the architect, fairies would utilize human detritus, Thomsen said. In an effort to standardize sizes among fairy structures this year, artists were each given a 4-inch model fairy, nicknamed “Fae.”

“Each artist has a really unique approach, even within those guidelines,” Thomsen said. “And I have come to believe that that is another part of the magic because different pieces and materials and styles really speak to different visitors.”

Checking in with

LAROYCE HAWKINS

With Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos, “Revolution”) gone from “Chicago P.D.,” there’s room for another detective in the unit … but who will it be?

“It would be nice to get a detective in the unit who’s homegrown,” says LaRoyce Hawkins, who has played Officer Kevin Atwater from the beginning of the Dick Wolf-produced NBC series. As the Wednesday police drama nears the Sept. 25 debut of its 12th season, Hawkins talks about Atwater and other characters who have yet to get a promotion to detective: “Whether it was Atwater or Burgess [played by Marina Squerciati, “Marshall,” 2017] or Ruzek [Patrick John Flueger, “The 4400”], I’d be happy for whoever takes that next step. Hopefully,we’llseethat.”

College Football Mascots

Questions: Answers:

1)Which National Championship-winning football school briefly had the mascot “Biff” during the 1920s and 1930s?

2)She’s not just the (beloved) mascot, she’s also the First Lady of Texas A&M University. Name the highest-ranking member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets.

3)“Hook ‘em Horns!” What is the name of the iconic Texas Longhorns mascot?

4)Officially, Delta State University’s mascot is “The Statesman” — but which unofficial fan ambassador was embraced by students and now equally represents Delta State?

5)On the sideline for every Georgia Bulldogs football game, what is the name of the live bulldog mascot?

6)What mascot for Brigham Young University (BYU) made his public debut on Oct. 15, 1953 by parachuting onto the field of LaVell Edwards Stadium?

10)True to their name, the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) Miners celebrate a friendly old prospector as a mascot. What is his name?

Still, Hawkins laments the departure of Spiridakos. “It’s always tough,” he says of such cast exits, “and because it is so tough for us as a unit, I think that’s what also makes it tough for the audience. We love working with each other, and hopefully, that shows. And I think that informs the audience about how to feel when somebody leaves. If we weren’t so tight, I’m not sure if anybody would care who came or went.”

As “Chicago P.D.” (also shown in repeats on USA Network and ION Television) has unfolded, Atwater certainly has had his share of situations to deal with. To cite examples, while taking care of his younger brother and sister on the personal side, he has run afoul of some corrupt cops by being willing to testify about what

he has witnessed on the professional front.

“He’s got a full plate, a lot on his shoulders,” Hawkins notes of his “Chicago P.D.” alter ego. “Atwater is the type who doesn’t let things go. He holds on extremely tight, and I think that moving forward, he’s going to try to find himself in a place where he can let go a little more … but he’ll always be good at holding on. That’s who he is and how he’s built.”
