Small mysteries
HERGETT For the Chronicle
Although a series of her assemblage work features hands pinned like insect specimens inside shadow boxes, artist Kate Huston is not so easily pinned down. Her works spans decades and mediums, all with an eye toward creating community both in and out of the world of art. As her art travels, Huston follows, hosting free art events in the hopes of inspiring creativity in others. She provides supplies and often homemade pie. “Pie brings people together,” she said during an interview in her home studio outside Bozeman on Tuesday, later mentioning how she and her mother gather to test new recipes.
Huston will host events at the Covellite Theatre in Butte on Friday evening and outside the DADI mini museum at 6 p.m. on Saturday, where she is the new featured artist.
“It’s great, it’s two hours of community gathering and free art,” Huston said. “I think people think art can be inaccessible and expensive, and I really don’t want it to come off as that.”
Plus, who knows where it could lead? Huston, who graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston in the ’90s, cites a class taught by Jesseca Ferguson as inspiration for the shadow boxes that would eventually become the assemblage collage pieces. A print from Ferguson, with a collection of found objects, hangs over the mantle in Huston’s living room. But in the class, the materials were a bit more outside of the box.
“Who knows that working on pig intestines with cyanotype would lead to this?” Huston asked.
Huston found herself drawn to the surrealist work of artists like Joseph Cornell and Marcel Duchamp and to dioramas like those in the Boston Public Library.
“It’s not just some building with an Army man in the front,” she said. “There’s a lady selling vegetables off in the far corner. What’s her story? What’s going on over here?”

A somewhat oversized ‘Spider-Man’ swings into action
One thing is for sure about “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”: Virtually no one will feel shortchanged by it.
To risk understatement, there’s a lot to the 2014 sequel to the 2012 movie that introduced Andrew Garfield (“The Social Network,” 2010) as Tobey Maguire’s web-slinging screen successor, to the tune of three major villains. The saving grace of the picture – which USA Network shows Saturday, Sept. 28, the night after it has the earlier movie – is the de-

velopment of the love story between Spider-Man’s alter ego, Peter Parker, and Gwen Stacy, played in this franchise by Emma Stone (“La La Land,” 2016), sporting a blonde wig in a period that preceded her two Oscar wins to date for best actress. head in an epic quiz duel in the opponent’s category. The winner takes over the loser’s square, gaining valuable ground as they expand their territory, while the loser exits the game. The winner must then choose — do they go on the offensive to dominate more of the board?
Or do they let The Floor choose a new challenger?”
Hosted and produced by Rob Lowe (“9-1-1: Lone Star”), the freshman season of “The Floor” averaged 5.5 million multi-platform viewers (per Fox) and has only grown since its inception — now with 29 more players than the original 81. With such heightened popularity, “The Floor” was renewed for a third season
alongside its second, set to premiere in 2025.
“Fans loved the first season of ‘The Floor’ so much that we’ve ordered two more seasons of this breakthrough game show with plans already underway to make our epic battle of the brains even bigger and bolder,” said Michael Thorn, president of the Fox Television Network. “It’s also been a massive win to have a huge star like Rob Lowe as our host, and both our viewers and competitors can’t wait to see him back in action.”
“The Floor” sees creator John de Mol (“The Voice”) serving as an executive producer alongside Mark van Achterberg (“Bibaboerderij”), Chris Culvenor (“The Mole”), Paul Franklin (“Quiz with Balls”), Wesley Dening (“Farmer Wants a Wife”), Sean O’Riordan (“Kids Incorporated”) and Shane Byrne (“Name That Tune”).
With Lowe at the wheel leading the way, the second season of “The Floor” premieres Wednesday, Sept. 25, on Fox.

Carrie Preston
OF ELSBETH ON CBS/PARAMOUNT+
Q: When did Carrie Preston first appear on “The Good Wife” as the character Elsbeth?
A: Carrie Preston first stepped into “The Good Wife” in 2010, toward the end of the first season of that CBS show. Quirky attorney Elsbeth Tascioni hadn’t been conceived to be a recurring character, but Preston – who had a good amount of television work under her belt by that time, encompassing “True Blood,” “Sex and the City” and shows in the “Law & Order” franchise – quickly made her mark in the role, eventually winning a Primetime Emmy Award as a guest performer for that portrayal.
When the sequel series “The Good Fight” was spun off for the then-CBS All Access (now Paramount+) from “The Good Wife” in 2017, it was a logical question whether Preston would resurface as Elsbeth. Not only did that happen in five episodes, but Preston also directed two episodes of the show. (She also directed a couple of episodes of another series on which he was a regular cast member, TNT’s “Claws.”)
Now, of course, Preston has another showcase as Elsbeth in the logically titled “Elsbeth,” set to begin its second season Oct. 17 on CBS and Paramount+. She and executive producers Robert and Michelle King have confirmed that “Columbo” was an inspiration for the current show, with Elsbeth – now relocated from Chicago to work with New York Police Department – using her unique insights and observations to get the goods on criminals, similar to the approach of Peter Falk’s Lt. Columbo.
As with “Columbo,” “Elsbeth” has been notable for its casting of guest “suspects.” Among those featured during the first season were Jane Krakowski, Blair Underwood and (in the premiere episode) Preston’s fellow “True Blood” alum Stephen Moyer.

Allison Janney celebrity q&a
BY ADAM THOMLISON
Q: I loved the sitcom “Mom” and was so sad when they canceled it. What’s Allison Janney been doing since?
A: I think it’s safe to say that fans took the cancelation of “Mom” harder than Allison Janney (of “The West Wing” fame) did. With a lengthy and decorated TV and film career behind her already, it seemed clear she would land on her feet — and she did. She’s appeared in seven different roles just since “Mom” was canceled in 2021. This includes supporting roles in the Oscar-nominated dramas “The Creator” (2023) and “To Leslie” (2022), as well as lead roles in the feature-length Prime Video comedy “The People We Hate at the Wedding” (2022) and the Netflix drama “Lou” (2022), which she also produced.
She also found time for a couple of one-off guest spots with the animated series “Q-Force” and the final season of the HBO smash “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
But her biggest role has been as a lead in the comedy series “Palm Royale,” about a young woman (Kristen Wiig, “Bridesmaids,” 2011) trying to break into Palm Beach’s high society at the end of the swinging 1960s. It released its first season earlier this year on Apple TV+ and has a second season lined up for next year.
All this is to say, Janney clearly hasn’t been hurting for work after “Mom.”
But let’s not sell that series too short, as some kind of blip in her career. The sitcom, about a newly sober single mom (Anna Faris, “The House Bunny,” 2008) trying to pull her life together while also dealing with her own wayward mother (Janney), ran for eight seasons on CBS. Of the seven Emmys Janney has won, two were for “Mom,” while one other was earned for her guest role in “Masters of Sex” and four were for her work on the critically acclaimed political drama “The West Wing.”
BY JAY BOBBIN
‘Jaws’ takes another bite out of the TV lineup
Summer is over, but it doesn’t necessarily require being in that season to feel the bite of “Jaws,” the 1975 box-office blockbuster based on Peter Benchley’s best seller, and the film that put director Steven Spielberg on the Hollywood map. AMC shows the picture Wednesday, Sept. 25, and as it nears its 50th anniversary, it still has all the impact it did originally.
With a Great White shark causing death and fear at the New England resort Amity Island, the water-hating sheriff (Roy Scheider) reluctantly heads to sea with a shark hunter (Robert Shaw) and a shark expert (Richard Dreyfuss) to find and destroy the marauder. The stories of the mechanical shark malfunctioning during filming are legendary, but it doesn’t matter in watching the final product. Co-starring Lorraine Gary and Murray Hamilton, and also including a memorable, Oscar-winning John Williams score, this is just a perfect movie. Period.

“Nash Bridges” (Heroes & Icons, Monday, Sept. 23): As Don Johnson returns to series work in ABC’s new “Doctor Odyssey,” his post-”Miami Vice” police-detective show is remaining in view, with five episodes shown consecutively in a mini-marathon, The 1996-2001 mystery-with-humor cast Johnson in the title role of a veteran San Francisco investigator with a complex personal life – sometimes involving his ex-wives, portrayed by Annette O’Toole and Serena Scott Thomas – and a professional partner (Cheech Marin) who’s great at exchanging banter.
“Murder on the Orient Express” (Turner Classic Movies, Monday, Sept. 23; Paramount+, streaming): Director Sidney Lumet’s wonderfully stylish 1974 version of the Agatha Christie mystery is — just as the ads promised — “the who’s who in the whodunit,” encompassing everyone from Albert Finney (as master sleuth Hercule Poirot) and Sean Connery to Lauren Bacall and Oscar winner Ingrid Bergman. The story has been told in other screen versions as well, but the sheer style and elegance of this rendering is hard to top. On TCM, the film is being shown as part of a “Star of the Month” salute to Bacall.
Adam Sandler celebrity update OF
MURDER MYSTERY ON NETFLIX
Q: Is Adam Sandler going to do another “Murder Mystery” movie? Those were fun.
A: The perpetually busy Adam Sandler (“The Wedding Singer,” 1998) has 12 different projects at some stage of development right now. Unfortunately, none of them is “Murder Mystery 3,” though he does have ideas. “Murder Mystery” (2019) and “Murder Mystery 2” (2023) were fun, light rom-coms pairing Sandler with fellow comedic great Jennifer Aniston (“Friends”) as a bickering but loving couple repeatedly (twice, anyway) thrust into the role of sleuths solving crimes in lavish settings. The films are, essentially, comedic send-ups of Agatha Christie. The second installment was released in the spring of 2023 on Netflix and was a huge hit, just like the first. It was the biggest film on Netflix when it was released, and

with more than 42 million views in its first three days, it had the second-biggest opening weekend for a Netflix comedy film. With numbers like that, it seems like just a matter of time before a third one goes into production. Especially since Sandler and Aniston have said that they’re game. While doing press for the second film, they both said they already had ideas for the story, including that their characters would get married in the course of events.
Sandler also said, in a red-carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight, that NBA great Shaquille O’Neal (who made his most recent television appearance in Peacock’s “Mr. Throwback”) would have to be involved — though he may have been joking about this: “If Shaq’s in it, I’m in it. I love Shaq and any time he’s near me, I’m happier.”
Real Madrid takes on newly promoted Espanyol in La Liga matchup
La Liga action returns this weekend with fans packing the historic Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid as Real Madrid gets set to take on Espanyol in a regular season fixture. The match kicks off Sunday, Sept. 22, live on ESPN.
The 2024-25 season is in full swing, as Real Madrid enters the year on fire. Its squad up front is bolstered by the newest addition for Los Blancos, Kylian Mbappe, who is already making an impact after scoring his first goal for Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup final, where it defeated Atalanta 2-0.
Despite not having found the back of the net this season, Brazilian phenom Vinicius Junior remains one of Real Madrid’s most pivotal players to don the white and gold, scoring 15 goals and adding five assists last season in another impressive campaign.
With added expectations entering this season, Vinicius remains focused on winning the club’s league trophy and 16th Champions League title — though many fans are hoping the team can pull off its first-ever treble.
In an exclusive interview with CNN, Vinicius Junior explains how he’s set his sights on greater things for Madrid this season: “The Champions League comes first, which is the most difficult competition — followed by La Liga and then the Copa. ... The Champions League [is] where Real Madrid always wants to win. And not only the players, the fans demand that of us, to win that competition, but our goal now is to try and win everything we enter and finally be able to win the treble.”
Meanwhile, visiting opponent Espanyol is enjoying its first full season back in the Spanish top flight after spending all of last season in the Segunda division with the Catalan side defeating Real Oviedo 2-0 in their promotion playoff final.

She hopes to bring the same sense of exploration to viewers of her shadow boxes.
“My heart is these collage works that I’ve done, and I’ve done them throughout the last 30 years,” she said.
The latest iteration of Huston’s work started as simple imaginary worlds created with reproductions of Victorian etchings from the public domain, an era she said is marked by invention and discovery.
Now she’s using the medium to retell stories of women from fables, folk tales, Greek mythology or the bible. Eve is not the antagonist in Huston’s version of Eden, and the acquisition of knowledge is beautiful and necessary. Medusa isn’t beheaded and is instead allowed to keep her head, her love and her beauty.
box collaboration with son Alwren for Random Acts of Silliness and an exhibition of her photography focused on the remnants of Montana’s homesteads and mining towns at the The Paul Harris and Marguerite Kirk Gallery in Belgrade. Next year, she has a writing residency planned at the Montana Artists Refuge in Basin to work on a book of photographs of state lands.
It feels a little surreal Huston said, especially after her art took a backseat to life for about 15 years. As Huston says, “life happens.” She had a kid, now an adult teenager, and dove into her other passion for improving food systems for Montana’s children. In what Huston calls the “artist dilemma,” she splits her time between making art and this career. Both seem to be more than a full time job.
continue cooking it, scraping down the sides as needed, until it has reduced and is the consistency of syrup, about 5 minutes. (Please note, the mixture will continue to thicken as it cools and only yield a few tablespoons.) Set it aside to cool. Cut the watermelon into cubes or use a melon baller and scoop it into balls and add them to a large bowl.
In a separate small bowl, whisk together the lime juice and olive oil with a pinch of salt and pepper. Pour the dressing over the watermelon, add the chopped mint and feta cheese, and toss to combine.
Once all the ingredients are combined, drizzle the salad with the balsamic syrup and serve immediately.
“We have all these great mythologies, all these great tales, but women always seem to get stuck at the bad end of it,” Huston said.
An avid reader from a young age, Huston found herself drawn to these mythologies, tales she says formed civilizations and philosophies. They taught lessons and gave people an idea of how the world worked, before mythology was replaced by science.
“And they were just such fantastic stories,” she said. “You have love affairs, beheadings, creatures, wars and all these gods playing with each other and taking out their emotions on each other.”
The show at the DADI mini museum, featuring four muses, feels like a bit of a full-circle moment for Huston as she reflects on her work in Bozeman. When she first moved to the area 25 years ago, she had a studio in the Story Mill, just up the road from the DADI’s current location on Griffin Drive within sight of the mill building near the old stockyards and across from Story Mill Community Park.
“This year has just been absolutely crazy, and it’s been wonderful because it has really been pushing the boundaries of what I have been doing with the artwork.”
Huston’s upcoming exhibits include a version of her tiny box worlds at the Holter Museum, a walk-in shadow box designed for a show at Omerta Arts Gallery, both in Helena, a crankie
Starting Sept. 23, Huston will be running a grant to improve meal programs in up to 10 rural school districts in Montana, focusing on local and indigenous foods, whole foods and bringing scratch cooking into lunch rooms.
“I’m passionate about food and children and nutrition in schools, especially in Montana where we have so many food deserts,” she said.
After the interview in her home studio, Huston visited the DADI mini museum to hang the last of the four pieces to be featured with the help of founder Richard Nelson whose love of art was inspired by a class he took in college from Dadi Wirz. The mini museum was conceived after Nelson closed the Silver Bow Art Gallery in Butte in 2021 and inspired by a personal motto.
“If you can’t do something grand, so something tiny in a grand way,” he said. The shipping container-based museum was created in collaboration with Intrinsik Architecture. More recently, Western Glass installed a wall of windows to protect the art. Many of the early exhibitions were from Nelson’s own collection, though lately he has been incorporating the work of local artists as well.
“I love what he’s done out here,” said Huston, who reached out to Nelson about the possibility of a show. “It brings art and nature together and makes it so accessible to the public.”

JEFF BRIDGES
The series may be called “The Old Man,” but that title is challenged by how much Jeff Bridges has to do in the show.
Season 2 of the FX spy drama, based on Thomas Perry’s novel of the same name, is currently running Tuesdays on the network (and the following day on Hulu), with the Oscar-winning actor (for 2009’s “Crazy Heart”) back as CIA veteran Dan Chase, who teams with former
ally and FBI official Harold Harper (played by multiple Primetime Emmy and Tony winner John Lithgow, “3rd Rock From the Sun”) in Afghanistan to rescue the kidnapped Emily (Alia Shawkat, “Arrested Development”), who could be the daughter of either man — or her Afghan captor (Navid Negahban, “Homeland”). Amy Brenneman (“The Leftovers”) also returns to the cast.
“This is a first for me,” Bridges, who is also an executive producer of the series, says of the extended work “The Old Man” is giving him. “Making a movie, you get a beginning, middle and an end … but in a show like this, I don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s an open-ended thing. As far as preparation goes, I start with aspects of myself that kind of parallel the character, but also it’s wonderful to have a consultant like Christopher Huddleston, who is a former CIA operative. That really is very helpful.”
With Season 2 of “The Old Man” letting him work more closely with Lithgow, Bridges reflects: “One of the things that we have so much fun talking about is that our upbringing is similar. We’re both second-generation actors, and we approach it the same way. There are a lot of actors who [say], ‘Please, only call me by my character’s name, and let’s not have any contact.’ And we

both work kind of 180 from that. We both really like to get to know each other.”
The filming of Season 1 of “The Old Man” was interrupted while Bridges fought both lymphoma and COVID-19. Furthermore, the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes forced Season 2 production to be suspended.
“What is so bizarre — to me, anyway — is that in the first season, when I was doing these fight scenes, I had a nine-inch-by-12-inch tumor in my stomach,” Bridges recalls. “And that didn’t hurt at all. So that’s surprising to me, but I’m feeling great now. There’s still kind of a kid quality in me. I like to get on the horse and stuff, and just tumble and have fun.”
