New concerto highlights musical collaboration

The Rhythms of Beethoven, Rossini, and Akiho

Featuring Andy Akiho’s newest work, Concerto for Cello and Orchestra

October 12 & 13

New concerto highlights musical collaboration

Little was exchanged between composer and percussionist Andy Akiho and cellist Jeffrey Zeigler on first meeting. Akiho had joined a friend (composer Ingram Marshal) to take in a Kronos Quartet gig at Carnegie’s Zenkel Hall. Afterwards, he would be ushered backstage and introduced to Ziegler, who played cello for the contemporary classical quartet for eight years from 2005 to 2013.

Neither remembers much about that initial meeting, other than that Ziegler and the other members of the quartet were sporting some fancy shoes that evening — Black and silver Dolce and Gabbana high top sneakers that Zeigler says are still in his closet.

In the years following, Akiho and Zeigler have become friends and frequent collaborators — even musical family. And this fall, they are celebrating the premier of “Nisei: For Solo Cello and Orchestra,” a new Akiho work composed specifically for Zeigler and commissioned by the Bozeman Symphony alongside the Sun Valley Music Festival in Idaho that premiered the piece in August, the Oregon Symphony where Akiho is the composer in residence, South Carolina Philharmonic, and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra.

“It’s a point of pride of mine that I’ve had a hand in kind of bringing so many pieces to life,” said Zeigler, whose music has always included elements of experimentation and collaboration.

or (406) 585-9774. A pre-concert talk begins an hour before each performance. Also on the program for this weekend’s performances is Gioachino Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” Overture and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major.

Akiho and Zeigler’s first collaboration

Bozeman Symphony presents “The Rhythms of Beethoven, Rossini, and Akiho” on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $27-82 at www.bozemansymphony. org

came by way of Zeigler’s wife, conductor Paola Prestini and founder of National Sawdust, a Brooklyn venue and nonprofit supporting innovative work. Her piece, “21,” that helped open the venue combined Akiho’s steel pan with Zeigler’s cello and spoken word. But that was

only the beginning. In the decade since, they have performed together in various ensembles, often collaborating with other musicians, artists and dancers.

“In addition to having had many different collaborations in the past, I know that we’re going to have many, many collaborations in the future,” Zeigler said over the phone the morning after one of the Oregon Symphony performances. “(‘Nisei’) just felt like a very natural part of that timeline.”

Many of the projects, Akiho said, used experimental electronics and amplification. “Nisei” goes back to more classical instrumentation with simply cello and orchestra.

“That’s what I wanted to explore in this piece,” Akiho said over the phone from Seattle, “going to what seems like more of a traditional route from what we’ve done, but to me it was a very innovative route.”

Akiho was on a layover on his way to Beijing when he spoke with Ruckus. Though cello happens to be his favorite instrument, his process focuses more on the musician. While composing, he said he imagined how Zeigler would play each note against what he described as the “full palate and timbre” of the orchestra.

“It was really writing a piece for Jeff, not for cello,” Akiho said.

“Nisei: For Solo Cello and Orchestra” draws on some of their shared history as well as their somewhat interwoven cultural identities. Both Akiho and Ziegler have roots in South Carolina. Both are half Japanese (“nisei” is the Japanese word for second generation and applies to the American-born sons and daughters of Japanese immigrants).

‘Dumbo’ flies in live action in Disney remake

It’s no secret that in its more recent history, the Disney studio has tried to capitalize on its intellectual property by turning some of its most popular animated features into live-action attractions.

That might seem especially tricky with a title character such as the one “Dumbo” has, but consider that Tim Burton is the director, and the 2019 remake – which Freeform shows Sunday, Oct. 13 – turns out to be very much its own creature, both literally and figuratively.

With his well-known knack for the offbeat, Burton might

seem an odd match for a Disney project, though he also was among the makers of “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Alice Through the Looking Glass” for the company. And indeed, the result here is a “Dumbo” that isn’t completely cuddly.

Digital effects help bring to life the baby elephant that gets separated from its mother -and yes, there still are those famous parent-and-child moments that don’t merely tug at your heart, they just about rip it out of your chest. However,

Danny DeVito (who earlier was The Penguin for Burton in “Batman Returns”) is wonderfully warm as the operator of the circus that becomes the big-eared, flying Dumbo’s new home ... but there’s also a really sinister rival showman, played by Burton’s earlier Batman, Michael Keaton. The competitor’s amusement-park concept is named Dreamland, but it may as well be called Nightmare Land, and Burton clearly is on familiar turf as he displays the site’s various horrors.

That also may be where more than a few moviegoers question the bill of goods they’ve been sold by “Dumbo.” Those who might expect strictly a live-action retelling of a childhood favorite are pretty much guaranteed to be surprised by the more ghoulish turns taken here, and that is to say nothing of how young children who are watching might react.

Horror-filled honors: 2024’s Fangoria Chainsaw Awards celebrate a ‘nightmare’ to remember

Hosted by David Dastmalchian (“Late Night with the Devil,” 2023) and Angel Melanson (“Jane vs Monsters”), the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards returns Sunday, Oct. 13, on Shudder. An event that began in 1992 with 11 categories — and a mail-in ballot voting system — the Chainsaw Awards now features 18 categories, including Achievement in Non-Fiction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Creature FX, Best Director, Best Documentary Feature, Best First Feature, Best International Movie, Best Lead Performance, Best Limited Release, Best Makeup FX, Best Score, Best Screenplay, Best

Streaming Premiere, Best Supporting Performance, Best Television Series, Best Wide Release Movie and (added only this year) Best Video Game.

This year, the awards will be presented by horror genre alumni such as Skeet Ulrich (“Scream,” 1996), Madeleine McGraw (“The Black Phone,” 2021), Dewayne Perkins (“The Blackening,” 2022) and Lauren LaVera (“Terrifier 2,” 2022), with categories featuring heavy-hitting films released in both 2023 and 2024.

“We couldn’t just drop a 2023 awards show in October of 2024, so our nominees represent the best of not only all of last year, but the first half of this year,” explained producer and Fangoria editor-in-chief Phil Nobile Jr. “This of course meant an unprecedented, absolutely brutal level of competition across 18 months of movies and shows. But it’s the Chainsaw Awards; getting a little bloody is, after all, totally on-brand for us.”

Following a year packed with nightmare-worthy films, the Chainsaw Awards’ two most anticipated categories — Best Wide Release Movie and Best Lead Performance

— are both stacked with endless talent.

For Best Wide Release, “Abigail” (2024), “Evil Dead Rise” (2023), “The First Omen” (2024), “Godzilla Minus One” (2023), “Infinity Pool” (2023), “Late Night With the Devil” (2023), “M3GAN” (2023), “Satanic Hispanics” (2023), “Talk to Me” (2023) and “When Evil Lurks” (2023) were all nominated, making for a gruesome competition.

Meanwhile, Tobin Bell (“Saw X,” 2023), David Dastmalchian (“Late Night with the Devil,” 2023), Kaitlyn Dever (“No One Will Save You,” 2023), Nell Tiger Free (“The First Omen,” 2024), Kathryn Newton (“Lisa Frankenstein,” 2024), Lupita Nyong’o (“A Quiet Place: Day One,” 2024), Emma Stone (“Poor Things,” 2023), Lily Sullivan (“Evil Dead Rise,” 2023), Sydney Sweeney (“Immaculate,” 2024) and Sophie Wilde (“Talk to Me,” 2023) all make waves with nominations in the Best Lead Performance category.

Determining who wins and who loses (and who only has seven days to live), the “2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards” airs Sunday, Oct. 13, on Shudder.

Answers:

George Clooney

OF SISTERS ON NBC

Q: I see that the series “Sisters” is streaming now. I know George Clooney was in it, but which character did he play?

A: We can confirm that it wasn’t one of the sisters … though with his famous sense of humor, George Clooney might have given that a try if that opportunity had been presented to him. The drama series, which ran on NBC from 1991 to 1996, is now available to stream via the service Plex. Clooney appeared during the fourth and fifth rounds of the show’s six-season run, playing James Falconer, a police detective who became involved with the program’s central family when he investigated an assault on one of its members.

Teddy (portrayed by Sela Ward) eventually was Falconer’s love interest, with their connection advanced and strengthened by the fact that they both were recovering alcoholics. He had a tragic personal past, for sure, and that background gave Clooney plenty of opportunity to show how he handled dramatic material. That was notable since much of his television work preceding that was in the comedy realm (“The Facts of Life,” “Roseanne,” etc.).

We won’t say much more about Falconer’s story here, for the benefit of those who aren’t familiar with “Sisters” and may want to check it out. Clooney stayed with NBC and production company Warner Bros. Television by segueing into the medical drama “ER,” which cemented his stardom with his portrayal of Dr. Doug Ross. His career after that is the stuff of show-business history, encompassing two Oscar wins (for his acting in 2005’s “Syriana” and his producing of 2012’s “Argo”) but no Primetime Emmy Awards as of yet.

Daniel Craig celebrity q&a

OF KNIVES OUT ON LIONSGATE FILMS

Q: Did Daniel Craig actually play a stormtrooper in a Star Wars movie? Also, when’s he giving us another Knives Out movie?

A: You raise two hard-to-believe facts here: one, that an actor of Daniel Craig’s (“Skyfall,” 2012) caliber would take a faceless, one-scene role in a Star Wars movie; and two, that it takes this long to make a Knives Out movie.

But incredibly, both are true.

Craig, in fact, requested the role in “Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens” (2015). At the time, he was shooting “Spectre” (2015), his fourth outing as legendary superspy James Bond, and that film shared some crew with “The Force Awakens,” including second assistant director Ben Dixon.

In his usual clipped English, he told Britain’s Daily Express newspaper that it all came together pretty easily. “I said to Ben, I said, ‘Part for me?’” And he was like, ‘Are you serious?’ I was like, ‘Yeah.’ And he went, ‘I’ll go ask J.J. [Abrams, director of “The Force Awakens”],’ And he came back and said, ‘Yeah.’”

That makes three mega-franchises Craig was a part of in the ‘10s. Because just four years later, he starred in “Knives Out,” a distinctly American take on the cozy mystery genre. A sequel followed — 2022’s “Glass Onion” — but a year before that was even released, it was announced that there would be a third film as well.

That movie, “Wake Up Dead Man,” is due out sometime in 2025 (that’s the less-than-specific word from Netflix, which is producing and distributing it).

And so, by the time it’s released, it will have been four years between the announcement of the film and its final release. However, it will only be three years between the second and third films in the franchise, which matches the gap between the first two.

TV is offering plenty of ‘Hocus Pocus’

It wouldn’t be Halloween season without a little “Hocus Pocus” … actually, more than a little, since the popular Disney feature typically gets a bounty of showings during October. That’s the case again this year, since FX has the 1993 horror-comedy-fantasy movie on Sunday, Oct. 13, and Saturday, Oct. 19 – and Freeform also presents it on Monday, Oct. 14, Wednesday, Oct. 16, and Friday, Oct. 18 (with more telecasts of it slated later in the month).

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy star as 300-year-old sibling witches who are revived by an unwitting teen (Omri Katz), who thinks he’s just clowning around when his actions have that drastic result at a museum in Salem, Mass. (where else?). It’s then up to him, his sister (Thora Birch) and his attractive new classmate (Vinessa Shaw) to try to reverse the trouble he has set in motion. The picture’s enduring success inspired a 1994 prequel and, even more notably, a 2022 sequel that reunited the three top stars.

more retro rewinds

“Freaky Friday” (Hulu, streaming): It’s a good time to catch this 2003 body-switching comedy-fantasy – which the Disney studio made twice before – since stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have completed filming a sequel that’s scheduled for release next year. They play a mother and daughter who end up occupying each other’s space quite literally, thanks to two fortune cookies that have a surprising effect on them. Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray also have reprised the characters they play here for the forthcoming sequel, which logically is titled “Freakier Friday.”

“Wings” (Turner Classic Movies, Sunday, Oct. 13): Director William A. Welman’s 1927 saga of pilots (played by Charles “Buddy” Rogers and Richard Arlen) who are rivals professionally and in romance has a permanent place in motion picture history, since it was the first film to win the Oscar for best picture. It’s presented here as half of a double-feature tribute to Clara Bow, who actually doesn’t portray the woman the two men fight over; that role belongs to Jobyna Ralston. Gary Cooper has a supporting role in the drama, which initially was a silent movie, then was re-released with music and sound effects added the next year.

Michael Trucco celebrity update

OF FIRE COUNTRY ON CBS

Q: I know that Luke is only a part-time character on “Fire Country,” but I’d love to see more of the actor. What else has he been doing?

A: California-born actor Michael Trucco’s star started rising quickly almost the minute he graduated theater school in the late ‘90s. He’s been working steadily, mostly on TV, ever since.

Even with his role as Luke in CBS’s buzzy action-drama “Fire Country,” Trucco is still probably best known for his two-and-a-half-season run as a star in beloved sci-fi series “Battlestar Galactica” in the late ‘00s.

As you say, “Fire Country” is only a part-time commitment for Trucco. In the meantime, he’s also continued a couple of other recurring roles — one in the ABC

medical drama “The Good Doctor” and one in ABC’s cop show “The Rookie” (which, when added to his firefighter role in “Fire Country,” gets him a first-responder bingo).

He’s also become part of the unofficial acting troupe employed by director Mike Flanagan (“The Haunting of Hill House”). Trucco appeared in all eight episodes of Flanagan’s 2023 miniseries “The Fall of the House of Usher” and has a role in his feature-length sci-fi drama “The Life of Chuck,” which recently debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival, ahead of getting wider distribution.

And he’s maintaining that busy pace — he’s currently in pre-production on the indie sci-fi film “The Last Transport,” which reunites him with his old “Battlestar” castmate Katee Sackhoff (“Riddick,” 2013).

Los Angeles Lakers head to Phoenix as preseason slowly wraps up

The Los Angeles Lakers continue their NBA preseason action as they get set to take on the Phoenix Suns Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, with all the action broadcast live on TNT.

Entering the 2024-25 campaign with a new head coach and a fresh sense of optimism despite making little to no moves during the offseason, the Lakers will be looking to go even further in the postseason after an early first-round exit last season against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets. Replacing coach Darvin Ham for the new season will be former NBA guard JJ Redick, who is entering his first season as an NBA head coach.

Another new face — also entering his first season as a Laker — is 23-year-old North Dakota native Dalton Knecht, the 17th pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft.

Projected to be a lottery pick, Knecht dropped to 17th, largely due to his older age at 23. But that didn’t seem to discourage the 2023-24 SEC Player of the Year, as he went on to average 21.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 45.8% from the field and 39.7% from three-point range.

Knechts’ shooting consistency is exactly what the Lakers need coming off last season, where they struggled with a league-second-worst 29.9% from three-point range.

Additionally, the Lakers will once again enter another NBA season with limited depth on the bench, something that may plague the team down the stretch of a grueling 82-game NBA regular season. Hopefully, with new faces and a fresh sense of leadership, the Lakers can wrap up their final stretch of the preseason on a strong note.

Collab/from 2

That was the starting point, Akiho said. “Nisei” allowed them to get in touch with their roots, but on an “abstract and intuitive level.”

The pair had been in talks about the piece for years before it came to fruition, with discussions about what kind of piece they were imagining and what they have in common.

“It’s 25 minutes and it goes through quite the gamut of emotions,” Zeigler said. “There’s a lot of intensity, there’s a lot of energy, but there’s a lot of beauty and melody as well.”

For some, adding cultural heritage into a piece could be taken literally, with themes from folk songs or other cultural nods. Akiho isn’t that literal. In a pizzicato section in the opening of the third movement, the orchestra’s strings seem to reference the sound of a koto, a 13-stringed zither that is Japan’s national instrument.

“I think that it’s more about the experience of being a second generation Japanese-American,” Zeigler said.

Add in the South Carolina connection and Zeigler describes the piece as an

abstract of interwoven feelings and thought processes related to identity and place.

“Yes, it’s an Andy piece, but it’s also like there’s something that binds the two of us, and I feel that connection,” Zeigler said.

In final discussions over the piece, Ziegler found the most challenging sections to be some the composer didn’t expect, and the sections that were expected to pose a challenge seemed easy to play through.

“I joke with him that he must think I’m a much better cellist than I actually am, because it’s pretty hard, playing up and down the cello constantly,” Zeigler said..

In what Zeigler described as the biggest compliment for the piece of music, cellists in the Oregon Symphony were “salivating” after the first rehearsal, asking when exclusivity contracts would end and the piece would be open for all to play.

“I hope that it will have a place in the repertoire because it’s really one of the best cello concertos I’ve ever come across,” Zeigler said, likening it to the work of Antonin Dvorak, Dmitri Shostakovich and Robert Schumann.

Though Missy Peregrym was absent from “FBI” for a while toward the end of last season, many more cases are in her future.

The Dick Wolf-produced CBS and Paramount+ drama returns Tuesday, Oct. 15, for its seventh year — the first of three that it was renewed for at once, something quite rare. Peregrym’s character, Special Agent Maggie Bell, is still concerned with taking over the raising of a late FBI peer’s (Charlotte Sullivan, “Chicago Fire”) daughter (Rose Decker, “Mare of Easttown”). She also has a big investigation to handle in the season opener, as she and her colleagues clash with CIA operatives while investigating a New York-area plumber’s murder that has global implications.

“We have a new showrunner this year, Mike Weiss [‘Chicago P.D.’], who’s fantastic,” says Peregrym, who notes another big “FBI” change with co-star Katherine Renee Kane (“Extra Ordinary,” 2016) about to leave with her federal agent character Tiffany Wallace. “We have a new person joining the team this season [‘National Treasure: Edge of History’ star Lisette Olivera, as Behavioral Analysis Unit agent Syd], and we’re really looking forward to that, though I’ve loved working with Katherine. She’s so talented, and I have nothing but love and support for her move forward in her career.”

The subplot of Maggie considering parenthood came in large part from Peregrym, a real-life mother of two, who explains, “I really just wanted to have more of a maternal side of Maggie come out, outside of work. I thought it was

interesting for her to get a child through a friend, and I’m excited that we’re able to continue that storyline.

“What I love about this season is that Maggie has to balance that out,” adds Peregrym. “She opens up more about that stuff not just with OA [her FBI partner, played by Zeeko Zaki, ‘24: Legacy’], but also with the other characters. And it’s tough. It’s not like she’s doing it by herself, but she definitely needs help and support. It’s not like every mother who has her own child knows what to do in every situation, but these are even tougher circumstances.”
