Painting outside the frame
RACHEL HERGETT
For the Chronicle
Montana art is so often seen as Charlie Russell paintings of buffalo and bronzes of elk. And yes, it is that. It is also so much more.
With that in mind, I was both excited and trepidatious on Tuesday as I made my way to Belgrade to meet Michele Corriel at The Paul Harris & Marguerite Kirk Gallery. Corriel quite literally wrote the book on modern art in Montana.
viewed and then recreated in the very personal vision of the artist.
Painters like Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Remington had shown the world sweeping vistas of the west in the 19th century.
“They were painting to bring people to a place and not to understand a place,” Corriel said.
“Montana Modernists: Shifting Perceptions of Western Art” began as Corriel’s doctoral dissertation in Montana State University’s School of Art. She could easily have made a coffee-table compendium, filled with glossy photographs of their work, and little information. Instead she threw herself into five years of
you want a realistic painting, cut a hole in the wall of your house and look out, you know, because nothing else is going to be as real as that.”
Art is more than drawing a beautiful tree, Corriel explained.
It is about the perspective of the individual artist. Images of the landscape and nature, people or pets, are more than their subjects. The art is in how they are
Montana’s avant-garde arose in a different world in the mid 20th century following World War II. It was a movement rooted in understanding the landscape around us in a very personal way, Corriel explained, citing Gennie DeWeese’s environmental and anti-nuclear activism.
“Montana Modernists” is divided into three sections. It begins with place, a core tenet of all western art — modern or no, before turning to the teaching and artistic lineage that shaped the artists. Most importantly, however, the third section speaks to community.
When Corriel moved to Bozeman in the 1990s with her geotechnical engineer husband, she was admittedly not a fan. As a girl in New York City, she was known
Since the publication of “Montana Modernists” by the Washington State University Press in 2022, Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings exhibitions based on the book. It has received numerous accolades, including the High Plains Book Award. And a letter accompanying the Joan Paterson Kerr Award from the Western History Association thanks Corriel for adding to the canon — exactly what Corriel had hoped for the work.

Angelina Jolie makes wicked magic as ‘Maleficent’
As time goes on, it’s not such a far stretch to think Disney characters could exist in the real world.
Glenn Close did much to fortify that notion as Cruella de Vil in the live-action “101 Dalmatians,” and Amy Adams made another step in that direction as the heroine of “Enchanted.” Another solid piece of evidence came in 2014, with Angelina Jolie as the embodiment of the Evil Queen who targeted Sleeping Beauty.

That puts her squarely in Maleficent’s sinister sights, but the two forge a relationship that doesn’t make the nasty intentions all that easy. That’s where Jolie and screenwriter Linda Woolverton (“The Lion King”) score big, showing the complexity of Maleficent as more than your standard-issue villainess.

on its head, tackling it from the stance of just what made the queen so evil. It’s not hard to understand, though one feels for young Aurora — who would become the sleeping beauty — in her position as the unwitting target of the vengeful Maleficent. The idea is that in her younger years, the title character was betrayed in an enormous way by someone she trusted and loved ... prompting her to curse that person and his descendants. Aurora (played by Elle Fanning) turns out to be one of them, being his daughter.
The movie has a great look in both its brighter and darker moments, really committing visually to the fantasy world that’s required by the story. And even when the special-effects gurus go to town by stirring up fierce storms and bizarre creatures, Jolie herself remains the picture’s best effect.
The actress has shown the power of her talent on the screen many times, but this is something quite specific and special for her. It’s clear that she understands just what she needs to accomplish as Maleficent, and she does it quite brilliantly. At times, she also does it subtly, a real credit to someone tackling a role pretty much built to let her go as over-the-top as she wants.

History-making match: See Paul and Tyson prepare for epic fight in new docuseries
Chronicling the blood, sweat and tears put into preparing for the fight of a lifetime, “Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson” makes its debut with a two-episode premiere airing Thursday, Nov. 7, on Netflix.
With one known as the most feared fighter in boxing and the other a controversial YouTuber-turned-MMA hopeful, fans have been anxiously awaiting the upcoming match between Mike Tyson, 58, and Jake Paul, 27. First scheduled to take place in July, this eye-catching matchup was rescheduled for Friday, Nov. 15, at AT&T
Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and is now expected to draw in countless viewers from around the globe.
Following months of training leading up to the event, this three-part documentary is set to generate even more excitement for the match — which, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, will be sanctioned as a legitimate professional fight, with eight two-minute rounds, 14-ounce gloves and an outcome that will affect both of their professional records.
The Netflix synopsis shares: “A three-part documentary series with intimate access to fighters The Problem Child, Jake “El Gallo” Paul (10-1, 7 KOs) and the Baddest Man on the Planet, Mike Tyson (506, 44 KOs) as they prepare for Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions’ (MVP) highly anticipated ‘Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson’ heavyweight boxing [match].”
“Countdown” will, they explain, “take viewers behind the scenes of Paul and Tyson’s respective training
camps to capture the incredible grit, determination and physical demands needed to prepare for what will be an explosive, can’tmiss professional boxing mega-event.”
Offering viewers a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the fighters’ individual journeys, the docuseries also promises interviews with Paul and Tyson’s closest friends, loved ones and co-workers, sharing candid and unfiltered moments from their rigorous training routines.
In addition, the series also shines a spotlight on a rematch taking place the same night — Nov. 15 — between undisputed super lightweight champion Katie Taylor and unified featherweight champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano, who face off in a match of their own as the night’s comain event.
Directed by Tim Mullen (“Quest for the Stanley Cup”) and Jackie Decker (“Gloves Off”), the threepart series “Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson” makes its way into the ring Thursday, Nov. 7, on Netflix.

Answers:
Kirsten Dunst ce l e b
OF CIVIL WAR ON HBO
Q: I recently watched the movie “Civil War” on HBO, and I was impressed with Kirsten Dunst. I know she was a child actress. When did she begin acting?
A: Kirsten Dunst was six years old at the time she appeared in a “Saturday Night Live” sketch and filmed the Woody Allen-directed segment of the 1989 anthology “New York Stories,” her first movie, but she had been working in TV commercials since the age of three. She also was in the 1990 film “The Bonfire of the Vanities” as Tom Hanks’ daughter and was in a 1993 episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” but many people recall the first time they saw her as being in “Interview With the Vampire,” the 1994 movie of the Anne Rice novel that teamed Dunst with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.
From there, work opportunities continued to flow for her. She played the younger version of March sister Amy in the 1994 version of the much-filmed Louisa May Alcott story “Little Women,” she had a considerable hit with the 1995 fantasy-adventure “Jumanji,” and she joined the NBC drama “ER” in its third season as a young prostitute protected by George Clooney’s Dr. Doug Ross. “Wag the Dog,” “Small Soldiers” and “Drop Dead Gorgeous” were among the movies that rounded out the 1990s for Dunst.
“The Virgin Suicides” (1999) and “Bring It On” (2000) continued to affirm her versatility, and her portrayal of Mary Jane Watson in the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man blockbusters during the 2000s put her fame on an even higher plane. After those, more adult roles became her norm, not only in movies — “Marie Antoinette” (2006), “Melancholia” (2011) “Bachelorette” (2012) etc. — but also on television, encompassing “Fargo,” in which she starred with her then-husband-to-be Jesse Plemons, and “On Becoming a God in Central Florida.”

Mikey Day
OF IS IT CAKE? ON NETFLIX
Q: Is Mikey Day going to be doing more “Is It Cake”?
A: Netflix hasn’t announced yet whether Mikey Day’s (“Saturday Night Live”) reality cooking show, “Is It Cake?,” will get a fourth season. It’s a little hard to even speculate. Viewership of the show’s third season was definitely down — Netflix reported that the second season got roughly 21 million views in the six months after its release, whereas the third season only got nine million. But nine million views could still be enough to earn a fourth round. It seems pretty inexpensive to make, with just one set, one full-time cast member (Day) and relatively modest prizes — the Season 3 winner took home $65,000. As a comparison, a single episode of Netflix’s historical drama “Bridgerton” costs $7 million to make.
Perhaps the biggest question is how much longevity there is in the show’s premise: each episode, a group of amateur bakers make cakes that look like everyday objects — suitcases, bowling pins, anything but cakes — and try to fool a panel of celebrity judges. Does Netflix think there’s another season’s worth of reality drama in there? There’s a theoretically infinite number of items that can be turned into cakes. If it does come back, it seems likely that Day will come with it. His situation hasn’t changed much — all along, he’s been doing this show off the side of his desk, so to speak, while continuing to be a featured player in “Saturday Night Live.”

Alfred Hitchcock sends Cary Grant ‘North by Northwest’
Alfred Hitchcock was famous for generating chills in many of the films he directed, but for thorough entertainment value, “North by Northwest” is among his top achievements. The humor-infused 1959 adventure is a frequent attraction on Turner Classic Movies, which shows it again Sunday, Nov. 3. One of the picture’s prime artifices is its re-creation of Mount Rushmore, which figures prominently into the climax that takes central character Roger Thornhill (played wonderfully by Cary Grant) to literal heights of danger.
He’s a New York advertising man mistaken for a spy by a cultured villain (James Mason), whose efforts to eliminate the human target also are marked by a hugely memorable encounter with a crop-dusting plane in a remote area. Eva Marie Saint has a pivotal role as a mystery woman who may or may not be on Thornhill’s side, and Martin Landau also is notable among the bad guys. Hitchcock’s traditional cameo comes very early in the film.

“The Princess Bride” (Hulu, streaming): Director Rob Reiner’s enduringly popular 1987 fantasy is magical in its look as well as its story, having been filmed across England and also in Ireland. Adapted by veteran screenwriter William Goldman from his own novel, the story-around-the-story finds a senior citizen (played by Peter Falk) telling his grandson (Fred Savage) the saga of the lovely Buttercup (Robin Wright), who appears destined to become the wife of a sinister prince (Chris Sarandon) though she truly loves a farm worker (Cary Elwes). Her kidnapping sends would-be rescuers in pursuit. Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn and Andre the Giant are also among the cast members.

ALF is an alien life form (portrayed largely by puppeteer Paul Fusco) who goes by the name Gordon Shumway, and crashes both literally and figuratively into the lives of an average American family. The lives of the relatives (some of whom are played by Max Wright, Anne Schedeen and Andrea Elson) are transformed by their being in the presence of the very unexpected visitor.
Hugh Laurie celebrity update
OF AVENUE 5 ON HBO
Q: What’s Hugh Laurie’s next project? I was sad to see “Avenue 5” go so soon.
A: Hugh Laurie (“House”) is working on two different projects at the moment, but there are question marks hanging over both.
It was announced in February 2023 that he would appear in the third season of Apple TV+’s spy drama “Tehran,” but nothing’s been heard of that since, even though the second season was released all the way back in the summer of 2022.
Filming was almost certainly delayed by the Hollywood strikes (though producers reportedly signed an “interim agreement” with the actors union to film while the strike was going on), but that doesn’t totally explain the absence of news since.

Meanwhile, it was announced that an even older series, BBC and AMC’s “The Night Manager,” is finally getting a second season. Laurie was the villain in the first season in 2016, who [eight-year-old spoiler alert] was apprehended at the end.
When the BBC announced the list of returning actors, he wasn’t included. But it did say he’d be involved as an executive producer. So as things stand, we won’t see him on screen, but the situation has the potential for at least a surprise cameo.
Another thing that offers hope of a reprise: the BBC announced that his character’s son in “The Night Manager,” played by Noah Jupe (“A Quiet Place,” 2018), will be returning for the second season. So, Laurie’s character will, at least be part of the conversation.

Jack Hughes and the New Jersey Devils take on Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers in ‘Prime Monday Night Hockey’ matchup
The 2024-25 NHL season continues with another “Prime Monday Night Hockey” matchup featuring the New Jersey Devils as they head to Edmonton, Monday, Nov. 4, to take on Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. The matchup airs exclusively on Prime Video.
The Devils enter the season with a renewed sense of optimism as new head coach Sheldon Keefe looks to continue building off the tremendous growth and development many of the young Devils players have been making over the past few seasons.
A key player to watch for the Devils this year will be superstar Jack Hughes, who, despite sustaining a shoulder injury last season, managed to put up 27 goals and 42 assists in 62 games before the team shut him down for the remainder of the year.
Heading into this season, Hughes’ speed, vision and elite puck handling continue to make him one of the most dynamic players in the NHL who is slowly turning into one of the NHL’s top offensive studs.
Meanwhile, the high-powered Oilers are coming off a season that saw Connor McDavid reach 132 points (32 goals, 100 assists) and Leon Draisaitl hit 106 points (41 goals, 65 assists) — the campaign also included a trip to the Stanley Cup final for Edmonton.
With both teams boasting high offensive game plans, the Devils will need to establish their presence early to keep up with the Oilers’ elite firepower.

“It’s a painting and then there’s a frame around the outside and there’s a door that comes out past the frame with a knob on it. And I was like, ‘You can paint outside the frame? You could live your life beyond the boundaries of the painting?’ I was blown away by that idea.”
Corriel ran an arts newspaper in New York City, often hiring poets to write about art. With language, she is able to tell more than the story of the artist behind a painting. She is able to illustrate the work with words, allowing the reader to feel the emotion behind its creation.
In Bozeman, she lamented the lack of art, and the lack of diversity in the food supply. It took years before Corriel found her own community through a writers group and then writing about local artists.
Corriel is a woman of many talents. Aside from prolific writing, she has a background in museum arts and now runs The Paul Harris & Marguerite Kirk Gallery, located in a nondescript commercial building near the airport in Belgrade that houses an extensive collection of art by Paul Harris. Harris died in Bozeman, wife Marguerite’s hometown, in 2018.
At first, Corriel was only compiling and writing about the collection. But she also wanted it to be accessible to the public, and turned the front of the space into a gallery
with walls on wheels to allow for changing configurations specific to each show.
“The saddest thing to me is art that doesn’t get to be seen,” Corriel said.
In curation, Corriel follows threads of connection between pieces she unearths from the Paul Harris archives — treasures sometimes buried in boxes inside boxes — with contemporary art works. The last show featured prints and moving sculptures from Bozeman artist John Buck. The latest show,
“From There to Here” features prints and paintings by Kathleen Rabel and photographs by Kate Huston, anchored by a pair of Paul Harris sculptures. An opening reception is from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3.
“He has so much art here that it’s really easy to do that,” Corriel said.
“I can pull out some bronzes and it’ll fit right in. It doesn’t look like I forced it in there.”
But Harris’ art goes well beyond bronze. Though shelves of the archive are filled with the molds used to cast
in bronze, Harris often worked in fabric, string and wood. There’s an operatic composition and a book of work based on conversation slips used by Franz Kafka while he was suffering from cancer of the larynx and couldn’t speak.
Corriel has a show planned for February and March that features drawings Harris did from the U.S.S. Ault, a ship in the Pacific during World War II, alongside the work of veterans from wars with Vietnam and Iraq. After that, we will see what her imagination holds.
“I love art,” Corriel said. “Art is my religion. I believe in art. I believe art will show us a way to our better selves if we just open our minds.”
The Paul Harris & Marguerite Kirk Gallery is at 190 Skyway Boulevard, Unit 2, in Belgrade. For more information or to make an appointment to view the gallery, visit www.michelecorriel. com and www.paulharrisart.com or email PaulHarrisArtCollection@ gmail.com.

on Peacock — for its 13th season. Mulroney plays Dom Pascal, who has succeeded Wallace Boden (formerly played by Eamonn Walker, “Oz”) as the chief of Firehouse 51. While the site’s closeknit team members are adjusting to their new leader, Pascal is doing the same where they’re concerned — and he’s also trying to navigate his way through his estrangement from his wife (played by KaDee Strickland, “Private Practice”).
“Not knowing details about the stories in Seasons 1 through 12, and my experience of not knowing a single person on the set, ran parallel,” the friendly Mulroney notes of his “Chicago Fire” arrival. “And I’ll be honest, that made it easier. However, a handful of the people on the crew worked on [the Chicago-set] ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ ... and in some cases, if I’m not working with them now, I’m working with their kids. Rick LeFevour [‘The Dark Knight,” 2008] was the stunt man who doubled me on that movie, and now his son [Rick LeFevour Jr., ‘Emperor of Ocean Park’] is doubling me on this.”
Though he had a recurring part in ABC’s now-finished “Station 19,” Mulroney didn’t play a fireman in that show. However, he sees benefits for his “Chicago Fire” work from having been there: “I had such respect for how physical those actors had to be, to go charging in with all that heavy equipment. And then I get here, and I can only say that Season 13 really is upping the action. Each of the producers told me that they want the actors in the same angles as the fire effects, so viewers can definitely expect that.”

Besides his acting, Mulroney has quite a few film credits — including “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016) “Jurassic World” (2015) and the Star Trek reboots — as a cellist, a skill he began learning in his youth.
He credits composer Michael Giacchino, who is an Oscar, Primetime Emmy and Grammy winner, as someone pivotal who “just brought to life my orchestral experience. He composed the score for ‘The Family Stone’ [2005], and I met him at the premiere party for it and said, ‘You should have me on your scores.’ And he said, ‘Well, you have to be pretty good. You have to be able to sight-read orchestral music.’ I said, ‘I can do that,’ and he called and he put me in. The pandemic slowed it down, but we’re still friends, and I hope we’ll do it again.”
