I may have made a mistake on Tuesday morning when I got Willie Watson on the phone to talk about his self-titled album and its release tour, which will make a stop at the Rialto in Bozeman on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Let me start with some background. I am not the type of journalist who comes up with a set list of questions before an interview. Yes, I research the subject and have ideas for lines of questioning on some sort of Rolodex spinning in my head. I’m not unprepared, but simply having a chat feels more natural to me and allows me to better capture them in the story. I’m generally a decent conversationalist.

Tuesday morning, though, did not begin well. I caught Watson as he was about to hit the road, heading north from California toward the next gig in Seattle. He’ll be traveling for about another month in this leg of the tour, but is more than comfortable with life on the road.

“I’ve done this my whole life,” he said.

From there, the conversation almost immediately turned to Old Crow Medicine Show, a band a teenage Watson co-founded in upstate New York in 1998 and growled that he was “kicked out” of in 2011. He obviously didn’t want to talk about it. Maybe he was tired of questions from pesky reporters.

Much of whatever transpired seems to have flowed beneath the proverbial bridge, as Watson appeared on the band’s 2023 album, “Jubilee,” and will support “The Crows,” as he called them, on a few of their upcoming tour dates.

Our conversation, however, was off to a rocky start. Watson was on a rant and I was mentally kicking myself for not putting the new album at the fore.

“I’m being selfish in the interview right now,” he said. “I’m all worked up.”

In a world where image is so often curated, Watson’s candor and passion are appreciated. Maybe the stories are all connected anyway. “Willie Watson” is his third solo effort, yet is also a debut of sorts. It is the first album Watson has released that includes songs he wrote, rather than only folk tunes, and thus it marks the first time he

felt comfortable sharing that part of himself.

“I lived a lifetime of self-diminishment,” Watson said. “I stopped myself in my tracks. I didn’t know how good I was.”

Watson has operated under the general belief that the world was out to get him for most of his life and is still slow to trust those around him. That had been his experience from childhood.

“I was always a ‘little shit’ or whatever they wanted to call me,” Watson said.

Now he is no longer the kid without friends drawing in a corner of the playground or doing handstands alone under a tree. He’s no longer in the band where his musical voice is diminished. And he has been battling those inner demons that often keep truly great art from ever seeing an audience.

With all that, “Willie Watson,” the album is a brilliant showcase of Watson the person’s evolution, of his life. The album has lamentations and love songs and even ends with a reflective spoken word piece where Watson talks about losing himself in Los Angeles while recalling how he first found himself and god through the music.

‘Skyfall’ is one of James Bond’s screen high marks

Daniel Craig had some clear high points during his tenure as James Bond, and “Skyfall” was one of them.

Showing on AMC on Tuesday, Nov. 12, the 2012 adventure marked the 50th anniversary of the film franchise and gave it a needed re-energizing after the relatively lackluster “Quantum of Solace” from 2008. The four years between the pictures, then an unusually long gap for Agent 007’s screen

cues, from the subtle (to not so subtle) “duh nuh … duh nuh” of a shark’s approach to the instantly recognizable tune of “Hedwig’s Theme,” used throughout the Harry Potter franchise.

From director Laurent Bouzereau (“The Fabelmans: A Family in Film,” 2023), this feature-length documentary is the first-ever to explore Williams’ unforgettable career and celebrate the artist’s impressive contributions to film, the stage and pop culture at large.

With 54 Oscar nominations to his name — and five wins for work in “Fiddler on the Roof” (1971), “Jaws” (1975), “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope” (1977), “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” (1982) and “Schindler’s List” (1993) — Williams shines as one of the most decorated musicians in the film industry, inspiring generations with his musical

According to Variety, “the film chronicles Williams’ rise from high school jazz bandleader to studio pianist to TV and film composer, rocketing to prominence with his scores for Steven Spielberg and George Lucas films in the 1970s; and his eventual embrace by the classical community via a 13-year stint with the Boston Pops, subsequently conducting symphony orchestras around the world.”

Featuring interviews with the aforementioned Steven Spielberg (“Jurassic Park,” 1993) and George Lucas (“Raiders of the Lost Ark,” 1981), alongside J.J. Abrams (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” 2015),

Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind,” 2001), Chris Columbus (“Home Alone,” 1990), Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All At Once,” 2022), Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”) and many others — with nearly 30 directors, producers, composers and musicians sharing their insights — the documentary paints a comprehensive picture of Williams’ impact, while also sharing never-before-seen footage of Williams at work on some of his most unforgettable scores, including music for “Jaws,” “E.T.” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977). Having previously turned down every opportunity to star as the subject of a film, Bouzereau worked hard to gain Williams’ trust throughout the years-long process of filming, claiming the key to getting the man to open up was to focus on his work. “When you talk to him about music,” Bouzereau says, “he will talk to you about anything.”

Jam! Review by Montana Foodie

Shopping on Main Street one crisp fall morning, my family and I stumbled upon Jam! On Main (25 W Main St, Bozeman, MT) and decided to give it a try for brunch. This eatery, open daily from 7 AM to 3 PM, offers a lively atmosphere with vibrant seating, eclectic art, and upbeat music that enhances the dining experience.

After a twenty-minute wait, we were seated in a cozy booth at the back. Our server promptly welcomed us, and we ordered fresh coffee and orange juice. For appetizers, we chose a delightful jam with regular and gluten-free toast (due to an allergy in our group), along with a crepe and benedict dishes for our mains.

The adventure in fresh, flavorful food began with the country toast and homemade strawberry jam appetizer, which quickly became the first highlight of our meal. The consensus was clear: the strawberry jam was the best we had ever tasted, surpassing even that from local farmers’ markets. Both types of toast were perfectly toasted and served with delicious butter.

As we finished our appetizer, our main dishes arrived. The Elvis crepe was a standout, featuring fresh bananas, crispy bacon, and peanut butter sauce rolled inside, topped with caramel, icing, and powdered sugar. This indulgent treat garnered

high praise around the table— definitely fit for the King himself.

Next, the Mia benedict, served on gluten-free toast instead of the traditional English muffin, featured heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil, mozzarella, a perfectly

poached egg, hollandaise sauce, arugula, homestyle potatoes, and a tomato jam. This dish offered a fresh Italian twist on the classic benedict, striking a delightful balance.

Lastly, we opted for the benedict flight, which

allowed us to sample three different variations: the Mia, the chicken and biscuit, and the crab cake benedict. After savoring the Mia, we tackled the towering chicken and biscuit benedict, which featured a flaky biscuit, cornbread chicken, maple syrup, sausage gravy, hollandaise, and a poached egg. The crab cake benedict was equally impressive, with lump crab meat, poached eggs, avocados, English muffins, and hollandaise sauce. Be sure to bring your appetite for this generous feast!

Once we finished, our waiter efficiently cleared the table and presented the bill, which came to around $80 for three adults—a worthy investment for the quality and quantity of food we enjoyed. Overall, I highly recommend Jam! On Main and have already encouraged friends and family to visit. No one has been disappointed! While the wait for a table can be lengthy, the exceptional food and service make it worthwhile. I wholeheartedly agree with the online reviews rating this restaurant at 4.7 out of 5 stars.

NBA in-season tournament matchup: The Spurs take on the Lakers

In an NBA in-season tournament group play matchup, Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs host LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers Friday, Nov. 15, at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. The game broadcasts live on ESPN.

Coming off an incredible rookie season, rising star Victor Wembanyama was not only 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year — averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.6 blocks — but he also led France’s men’s basketball team to a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics this past summer. Currently, the French phenom is poised to take another major step in his development at both ends of the court. With the Spurs also adding veteran point guard Chris Paul to the roster this off-season, Wembanyama has even more room to elevate his game, particularly in pick-androll situations, opening up “The Alien” for better shots down the stretch.

Meanwhile, Lakers all-star LeBron James continues to defy Father Time, averaging 27.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game last season while his teammate, Anthony Davis, dominated the paint with an average 12.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game.

Now, the Lakers will be looking to make their mark early, using the undeniable chemistry between James and Davis to exploit the Spurs’ lack of experience and physicality. However, the Spurs have youthful energy and pace on their side, and with Victor Wembanyama expected to be a force on both ends of the floor, fans can expect fireworks from star to finish.

TOWN & COUNTRY FOODS: INSTANT POT CHICKEN CACCIATORE

Ingredients

3 frozen Food Club boneless skinless chicken breasts (about 10-12 ounces each)

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 yellow onion, sliced

3 cloves garlic, minced

8 ounces white mushrooms, quartered

1 carrot, peeled and diced

1 teaspoon kosher salt

½ cup red wine

2 cups beef broth

1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 tablespoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes

½ teaspoon sugar

1 red bell pepper, seeded and sliced

1 green bell pepper, seeded and sliced

½ cup pitted black olives, cut in half

¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Set Instant Pot to “Sauté” mode and add the olive oil.

When the oil is hot, add the onion, garlic, mushrooms, carrot, and salt. Cook until onion starts to soften, about 2-3 minutes.

Add the red wine and beef broth to the pot and scrape any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, thyme, oregano, red pepper flakes, and sugar to the pan and stir to combine. Submerge the frozen chicken into the sauce and lock the Instant Pot lid in place, making sure the venting valve is sealed.

Set the Instant Pot to cook at high pressure for 5 minutes.

When the cooking time is up, allow the pressure to release naturally for 18 minutes, and then carefully turn the venting valve to release any remaining pressure. When the pressure pin drops, remove the lid.

Remove the chicken from the pot and place on a cutting board to shred once cooled.

Set the Instant Pot on “Sauté” mode and bring the sauce to a simmer.

Add the bell peppers and olives to the sauce and cook until the pepper are tender and cancel “sauté” mode.

Add the shredded chicken and parsley to the sauce and stir to combine.

Serve the chicken and sauce over cooked rice or pasta topped with grated Parmesan.

Watson/from 2

“(The album is) just a picture of a guy who’s trying really hard,” Watson said. “You know, it’s a portrait of a guy. It’s just a portrait of a human being who’s saying, hey, I’m a human being. Let me be a human being. And I’ll let you be a human being too.”

For the recording, Watson said he got the right musicians in the room, namely bassist Paul Kowert, guitarist Dylan Day, drummer Jason Boesel and fiddler Sami Braman, and let them work their magic. On tour, he’s been performing as a three-piece alongside Braman and bassist Ben Gould, his childhood best friend with whom he formed electric-tinged old time band The Funnest Game.

As teens steeped on Nirvana, Pixies and Ramones, Watson and Gould found a similar punk and alternative spirit in Appalachian and old time string band music. Whereas bluegrass players were clean and wore suits and fit into society, the old time pickers were a rowdy crowd, bringing an attitude and character to the music that was infectious.

“I was listening to the outliers music, the weirdos music, the people who didn’t fit into normal society,” Watson said.

In recording “Willie Watson,” he was also concerned about what he called the rise of mediocrity in music over the last four decades. Most people could use more practice, or more work on their songs, he said. He didn’t want to release music that wasn’t up to his own exacting standards.

“I didn’t realize that the music that I was making wasn’t mediocre, but I thought it was,” he said. Now I realize that it’s far better than anything I hear on the radio.”

Watson’s first instrument was guitar, inspired by the likes of musicians like Bob Dylan and his biggest early inspiration, Neil Young. But today, Watson no longer cares for their music, or much of anything, though he does buy tapes for his 1987 Chevy G20 van’s stereo.

“My ears are very tired of everything I’ve ever heard,” he said. “And I’m more

into the music I want to make and that I can create.”

We didn’t get around to discussing my love for his cover of Swedish pop star Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own” or his work on Coen brothers film “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” before Watson announced he had to hit the road and disconnected our call.

In the film’s first vignette, he’s “The Kid,” the younger cowboy who rides into town immediately takes out Buster Scruggs (Tim Blake Nelson), leading to a duet with Scruggs’ angelic form on the Oscar-nominated song “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings,” written by collaborators Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch. In 2019, Welch told Rolling Stone that the main idea for the song was outlined in a conversation with Joel Coen.

“He was like, ‘Look, there’s the singing cowboy — he’s been around for a while. Now here comes the new guy. He’s cuter, he’s faster and he sings better. He’s just better. It’s the new model. He’s coming for him,’” Welch stated. There’s something of The Kid in Watson, even at 45. He is the latest model, seeking out the challenges that allow him to prove he is better.

“I don’t mind being competitive,” Watson said, referencing how the rivalries pushed old blues guitarists to hone their skills. “Nowadays, it’s like ‘Oh, I love everybody’s music and everyone’s good.’ No, they’re not. They’re not good and I don’t like them, you know? I’m going to go ahead and say it.”

Music is like church for Watson, and the closest he has felt to god has been in the power of the human voice. On stage, he demands reverence.

“I want your full attention,” he said. “If you’re talking when I’m playing, I’m maybe going to lose my mind. This is like church, like a service.”

So go see Willie Watson — he’s playing at the Rialto, 10 W. Main St. at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, with Viv & Riley opening — but only if you really want to listen to what he has to say. Tickets are $28.25 (including fees) at https://logjampresents.com. Visit www. williewatson.com for more info.

expert Gabi Mosely (played by Shanola Hampton, “Shameless”). Margaret sadly has personal experience in missing person cases, since her own son disappeared more than a dozen years ago, and she has never given up her search for him.

After directing a number of other shows in recent years, Williams also fills that job on a “Found” episode later this season. “I think [producers] like the fact that I am an actor and I know actors,” she reasons of her behind-the-scenes work, “so I can use some of the shortcuts that actors have. In talking about character and story, I can ask them, ‘Are you a person of many words, or do you prefer just a few words?’ I find that’s something a lot of directors don’t ask, so I think that maybe that’s an advantage I have.”

Williams adds about acting, “Sometimes you can be prepared, then you suddenly get in front of the camera and you don’t quite have it in the same way, or your nerves get hold of you. [As a director,] I feel I also can be a mom and a therapist in that moment, as well as a fellow actor.”

In the often-repeated 2004 cable movie “A Boyfriend for Christmas,” Williams worked with her late mother, fellow actress Shannon Wilcox. “That was so much fun to do with her,” Williams recalls. “I had just had my second child, so I was there with my mom and my new baby.”
