BY RACHEL HERGETT FOR THE CHRONICLE

Harrington works from her home office west of Bozeman, donning a mask and turning on fans to move the wisps of smoke from her face between playdates and swim lessons for her 5-year-old daughter, caring for a floppy little golden puppy or the family’s two other dogs and cat, a recently acquired cleaning job and the myriad other responsibilities of a working mother. It wouldn’t be possible without the support of her husband and daughter, she said. While Harrington talks, her daughter bursts in and out of the room. She’s curious and artistic, with her own table alongside her mother’s for crafting or drawing princesses. Harrington said both mother and daughter are “counting the sleeps” between now and when kindergarten starts next week, then patiently explains the phrase’s meaning.Though she hopes to carve more time to devote to wood-burning after next week, Harrington’s goal is to find a way to create full time and — though a self-professed introvert who finds the idea somewhat terrifying — teach her art to others in the community.

TOP: Wood-burner Kaelyn Harrington works on a piece in her home office west of Bozeman on Aug. 30. ABOVE LEFT: Harrington’s magnets feature nature themes and painted “galaxy skies.” ABOVE RIGHT: Harrington has been experimenting with different techniques and textures, such as the stippling and wood grain in this lantern.

Rachel Hergett for the Chronicle

Some people have a to-do list. Kaelyn Harrington has a to-burn list. Harrington plays with fire as an art, using a tool to char graphic designs into wood and other materials like moose paddles. The art is technically known as “pyrography,” Greek for “writing with fire.” Harrington uses the term, but said “wood-burning” is easier to understand and “sounds way cooler.”

“I think it would be fun,” she said. “And I do want people to find a hobby that they truly enjoy, even if it’s not something they’re great at. Like doodling in a sketchbook, I want people to find their own little area that gives them peace.”

Well, I’ve always in my show been a real fan of looking for deals that you can buy in bulk, whether it’s a huge family pack of chicken thighs or even packages of meats, proteins that are a day or two away from needing to go, they mark them down, you can buy a family pack of 36 chicken thighs sometimes. And then the second I get home I break them down, package them into smaller portions and freeze. And so that’s my favorite trick, is to kind of find the deals on proteins.

In terms of inexpensive ingredients, what are your go-to’s for staples?

And then another thing I’m a fan of is frozen vegetables. They aren’t fresh but they’re the next-best thing to fresh. So things like broccoli florets and green beans and even frozen onions and peppers mixtures that you can get now. So we can’t all go to a farmers’ market or a farm stand every other day so it’s really great to have things on hand like that. And I’m a huge fan of the freezer (laughs).

The musical inspired by the songs of ABBA makes for a very entertaining movie, enhanced by lovely Greek locations. Whet your appetite with Acorn’s ‘Recipes for Love and Murder’

Maria must work through her own mysterious past to investigate the case, helped by sometimes-rival Jessie (Kylie Fisher, “Office Invasion”), though they may make enemies in the process. All the while, Maria comforts her readers by blending experiential advice with soothing recipes.

Premiering Monday, Sept. 5, on Acorn TV, the 10-part series from South Africa stars Maria Doyle Kennedy (“The Tudors,” “Orphan Black”) as Tannie Maria (Auntie Maria in Afrikaans), a food columnist who takes on the role of advice columnist and subsequently amateur sleuth when a woman who had been writing her about her abusive husband is found dead.

If you happen to like your mystery with a side of food porn, then “Recipes for Love and Murder” might be for you.

MariaKennedyDoyle

Toward that end, the series features beautifully photographed dishes and food preparation. Many came from the novels on which the series is based, Sally Andrew’s “A Tannie Marie Mystery,” but others came from writer/director/ executive producer Karen Jeynes, who adapted the books for television.

Indeed, the mutton curry was arguably the star of the opening episode as there are scenes of mixing spices, sauteeing onions and mutton and frying mustard seed. Jeynes says that most of the food prep scenes in the series were done by Doyle Kennedy, a more than competent cook, though the more intricate knife work was filmed with a hand double.

“We just spent a lot of time with Maria doing kind of food choreography, really I would call it,” Jeynes explains. “We’d go through the steps of the recipe with the chefs with that great team that we had, we’d obviously shoot it stage by stage. As you know, you’ve got to do it over and over again and you’ve got to take that bite over and over again and make it look delicious every time.”

“We wanted the food to be meaningful to the story and the plot and also to the location where possible,” Jeynes explains. “We wanted to perhaps showcase some food that is a bit unusual for people, that’s quite South African or that’s specific to the Karoo (the region in South Africa where the show is set and was filmed), so for example where sheep are farmed in great quantities in the Karoo. So we had kind of all these elements playing out and the first episode features the mutton curry.”

Thanks to the success of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” Steve Martin is one of the kings of streaming now ... but another service also is making use of his talents, since Disney+ is running his 1991 version of “Father of the Bride.” It’s the delightful remake of the Spencer Tracy-starring 1950 comedy (also done again recently with Andy Garcia) that’s centered on a dad who only gets more harried as the nuptials of his daughter (played in this case by a then-debuting Kimberly Williams) approach.

“Road House” (AMC, Tuesday, Sept. 6, and Wednesday, Sept. 7): Jake Gyllenhaal reportedly has a remake in the works, but for many fans, Patrick Swayze always will be Dalton ... the compact but highly efficient bouncer who advises his charges at an extremely rowdy nightspot to “be nice, until it’s time not to be nice.” This 1989 cult classic also features Sam Elliott and Ben Gazzara, both doing what they do best.

“This Is Spinal Tap” (Turner Classic Movies, Sunday, Sept. 4): The comedy that really set the pace for so-called “mockumentaries,” director Rob Reiner’s muchbeloved, often-quoted 1984 portrait of a fictional rock band casts Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer as the members of the group. They’re followed by a filmmaker (played by Reiner himself) during a concert tour that proves eventful, to put it mildly. Bruno Kirby, Ed Begley Jr., Fran Drescher, Dana Carvey, Billy Crystal and Patrick Macnee (“The Avengers”) also turn up.

“Star Trek” (Heroes & Icons, Friday, Sept. 9): An episode of the original series that has had life beyond its final scene, “Space Seed” set up (though no one knew it at the time) the 1982 feature film “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” This hour saw guest star Ricardo Montalban originate the role of Khan, the genetically engineered and quite dangerous villain who tries to take over the Enterprise.

As his wife (Diane Keaton) tries to help keep his feet on the ground, a quirky wedding planner (Martin Short, now reunited with Martin in “Only Murders”) doesn’t do much to help him stay calm. Disney+ also has the 1995 “Part II” sequel that reunited the cast, also including George Newbern (“Scandal”) as the groom.

“Gimme a Break!” (Cozi TV, Sunday, Sept. 4) – Tony- and Primetime Emmywinning Broadway star Nell Carter made her way to series television with this sitcom, which began its run with “Katie the Crook.” In becoming the housekeeper for a widower police chief (Dolph Sweet) and his daughters (Kari Michaelsen, Lauri Hendler, Lara Jill Miller), Nell Harper (Carter) comes into a lot of activity clearly indicating what she’ll be in for ... as she ultimately was for six seasons.

Harrington picked up her first wood burner at a craft store seven years ago to create a wedding present for a friend — a cutting board with the bride and groom’s names burned into the wood. She had tried wood-burning once before, decorating a coat rack with her family name during high school shop class, and figured she could make something work with the cheap tool.

work is constantly evolving as she tries new techniques, like stippling, or materials, like, most recently, moose paddles.

Harrington took inspiration from the community she found at each new job, in the families that followed the work and the pride they took in it. She started burning wood signs with linemen-specific images as a hobby. It was something she could easily do around the camper to fill her spare time. Some signs had amusingly crass sayings related to the job that she declined to repeat. Others were meant more for children and often wound up on bedroom walls.Eventually, prompted by her husband’s boss, Harrington opened an Etsy shop, Wandering Pine, wildflowers,inTroy.towerMountainsthethatherselforitbutpyrographyshop/WanderingPineMT,https://www.etsy.com/tosellherwork.Harringtonsteppedawayfromwhenherdaughterwasborn,pickeduphertoolsayearlater.Shesaidfeltsomethinglikefindingherselfagain,cominghome.That’swhyshemaypushtoteachandpassontheart.“IfeelfortunatethatIcandosomethingItrulylove,”Harringtonsaid.Inspirationnowcomesmainlyfromoutdoors,alovebornintheCabinetofnorthwestMontana,whichoverHarrington’shometownofCampersmakefrequentappearancesHarrington’swork,asdogardenandwildlife,pinetrees,mountains

To tell the story of how pyrography took hold, Harrington starts with her husband. The two met through friends during her years in college at Montana State University. Soon after her graduation, the pair were living in a camper, ready to move at a moment’s notice while her husband apprenticed as a journeyman lineman, building power lines across the West.

and most recently, what Harrington calls “galaxySomeskies.”pieces are left as raw wood and char, others painted with acrylics or watercolors. To contain colors when water will naturally follow wood grain, the latter requires a softer touch on wood than on paper and a deep outline with her wood burning tools to contain colors, Harrington explained. The watercolor creates a much softer feel to the work. One watercolor piece hangs in the office, a long oval wood slice acting as frame and background to a delicate curved spine with flowers tucked into various vertebrae. Her spine, Harrington said, making her scoliosis beautiful.

That initial tool still has a place on her shelf, but was replaced long ago by a more professional set-up that includes interchangeable pen-like tools with wire tips connected to a heating control element.

Harrington has created signs for the last two villages from designs by the organization’s graphic designer. At home, she designs some pieces on the computer, especially when they are text heavy or her hands are jittery from too much coffee. She will then trace the design using a graphite paper. Others she pencils in, allowing them to work with natural features like knots in the “Iwood.think people appreciate it more when they see it is truly done by hand,” Harrington said. “It’s more unique than the laserHarrington’sengraving.”

Harrington’s work caught the eye of Danielle Thomsen, the “executive enchantment officer” at Bozeman-based art organization Random Acts of Silliness. She asked Harrington to create signs for Random Acts of Silliness’ fairy villages, where local artists design homes for the mythical creatures and bring a little magic to area“Herparks.work is natural, but also colorful and pretty,” Thomsen said. “It seemed like such a natural fit. She wasn’t taking commissions, but I asked anyway.”

Perhaps more than any other team, the San Diego Padres went all in at the trade deadline in their quest for a Wild Card playoff berth Of course, of their flurry of moves, the biggest was the addition of Juan Soto, the superstar right fielder landed for a haul of prospects from the Washington Nationals. His acquisition left the baseball world gobsmacked and the Padres’ faithful delirious with visions of October baseball dancing in their heads. The 23-year-old two-time All-Star is a generational talent and the classic five tool player – he can hit for average and power, field, throw and run. In his four-plus seasons in the majors (as of mid-August), the native of the Dominican Republic owns a .292 career batting average with 120 home runs, 359 RBIs, a .428 on-base percentage and a .967 OPs – eye-popping stats indeed.Alsoin his short time in the bigs, he has assembled a trophy case to match his numbers, boasting a batting title, two Silver Slugger Awards, a Home Run Derby title and a World Series championship to go with his two All-Star appearances. His addition to a lineup that also includes Manny Machado, new arrivals Juan Bell and Brandon Drury and presumably All-Star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. (who is due back from the injured list) could make the Padres a force to be reckoned with down the stretch. Whether that will be enough to vault them past the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves in the race to the NL Wild Card will be fun to watch.
