‘The Old Way’
Casting director helps locals break into film
RACHEL HERGETT for
the Chronicle
In the past two years, Tina Buckingham has helped cast over 70 speaking roles and countless extras in 10 features, two short lms and the eight-episode rst season of “1923,” a “Yellowstone” prequel series featuring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford.
“I thought I retired, you know what I mean?” Buckingham said on Tuesday. “And then I got this career that I thought I would have 20 years ago.”
Buckingham is often the Montana casting director, responsible for what she calls “day players” to supplement
the top-billed cast. In Westerns, which make up the majority of her projects, these are the deputies, but not the sheri . ey are the shopkeepers, the prostitutes and the working cowboys. Recently, she has also taken on the role as lead casting director, a longtime goal.
“Tina has been in our community for decades doing this kind of work,” said Lisa McGrory, Bozeman Film Society board member and former executive director. “ e number of actors she has cast is impressive.”
Buckingham will be joined by some of the actors she has cast recently in a Q&A following the Bozeman Film
Society screening of “ e Old Way” on Wednesday, March 8, in the Emerson’s Crawford eater.
In the 1970s, Buckingham was an extra on every movie that lmed nearby, starting with “Rancho Deluxe,” starring Je Bridges. She loves the energy on set, likening it to summer camp.
“ e excitement never changes,” Buckingham said.
After taking a break for motherhood, she started a new career combining location scouting, coordinating and casting, before nding her passion in the latter.

BY JAY BOBBINSteve Howey OF ‘TRUE LIES’ ON CBS AND PARAMOUNT+
In assuming the role played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1994 movie version of “True Lies,” do you have any desire to channel him into your performance?
I said that I would never, out of respect for the man, do the impersonation. I’ve never done it, not once, and I never will. It’s an iconic actor and an iconic man, and it’s an iconic film.
We just wanted to do something on our own, you know? We couldn’t mirror the movie. We didn’t want to do it exactly. We wanted to bring our own flair, and I think we did.
Because of the nature of the show that it is, “True Lies” involves a lot of different aspects. How has it been for you to play all of that?
This action/drama/comedy, the elements that we were doing, all the cast dreamt about doing something like this ... so while we were doing it, it was like, “We’re doing it. This is amazing.”

BY GEORGE DICKIEConversation and drinks: When talk shows get spirited
It’s no secret that a few drinks can loosen lips and bring out the motormouth in even the most cloistered introvert. So imagine what it can do for folks who perform on camera for a living. For makers of talk shows, that can translate to ratings gold as tipsy celebrity guests let their hair down, get silly and/or real and create the kind of buzz and publicity that money can’t buy. And for viewers, it can be downright fun to watch.
A new entry joins that subgenre with “The Wine Down.” Airing its second hourlong special Wednesday, March 8, on BET, it places R&B/soul/hip-hop icon Mary J. Blige in the role of host as she cracks a bottle of wine and engages in raw, provocative, insightful and real conversations with guests from the worlds of entertainment, sports, politics and social media.
So while few other details were available at this writing, it has been announced that Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson will be this week’s guest to be engaged (and served) by Blige, who created the series with her production company Blue Butterfly.
Here are some other talk-with-drinks shows that viewers have sampled over the years.
“Late Night With Seth Meyers” (NBC): A fun element of this after hours talker is the segment “Seth Goes Day Drinking,” in which the host and a celebrity guest spend an afternoon imbibing
at a New York City establishment. The antics get silly and all concerned have fun as Meyers plays impromptu games and engages the likes of recording artist Rihanna, talk show host Kelly Clarkson, chef Ina Garten and actress Retta. These days, these segments can be found on YouTube.
“A Drink With” (YouTube): Hillary Sawchuk is your host for this series that was created in 2011 with the intention of bringing back frank conversation to media. Guests range from entertainers and artists to athletes and entrepreneurs and have included comedian Chelsea Handler, actress Natasha Lyonne, journalist Lisa Ling, race car driver Kyle Busch and author Katie Lee Biegel.
“Kocktails With Khloe” (FYI): Now available to stream on Hulu, this short-lived 2016 series featured socialite and TV personality Khloe Kardashian throwing a lively dinner party in her kitchen, where she drinks and chats it up with a range of guests including actor Taye Diggs, musical artist Sean Puffy Combs, TV personality Jeannie Mai and YouTube personality GloZell Green.
“Today With Kathie Lee & Hoda” (NBC): Hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb kept it light as they sipped Gifford’s GIFFT wines while bantering with guests and each other in the fourth hour of NBC’s venerable morning program. The fun ended with Gifford’s departure in 2019.

“Victoria Gotti: My Father’s Daughter” (Available now)
This 2019 docudrama purports to give a sense of what it’s like to grow up as the daughter of mob boss John Gotti. Chelsea Frei stars as Victoria, portrayed as a sensitive young woman who grew up worrying about her father’s (Maurice Benard) safety. More drama ensues with her younger brother’s death and a turbulent romance with a man Victoria would marry over her father’s objections.
“Rosaline” (Available now)
Karen Maine (“Starstruck”) directed this 2022 romantic comedy that retells the story of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” from the perspective of Rosaline (Kaitlyn Dever, “Dopesick,” “Last Man Standing”), the woman Romeo (Kyle Allen, “West Side Story”) claimed to have loved before he fell for Juliet (Isabela Merced, “Dora and the Lost City of Gold”).
TCM has ‘Close Encounters’
Even if it didn’t contain five of the most famous music notes in movie history, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” would be one of the most memorable science-fiction movies yet. Turner Classic Movies presents Steven Spielberg’s 1977 blockbuster Friday, March 10, as part of “31 Days of Oscar” – and the story he wrote, about alien-spacecraft sightings on Earth, is imbued with the humanity that has been his trademark. Spielberg reunited with two of his “Jaws” collaborators – star Richard Dreyfuss and composer John Williams – to tell the story of several people whose lives are changed, understandably, by unusual experiences eventually traced to the presence of extraterrestrials in our orbit. The late Melinda Dillon is wonderful as a mother distraught when her young son (Cary Guffey) vanishes. The resulting tale is universal in so many ways, it undoubtedly will continue to stand the test of time.
Puzzle Solutions
She takes pride in the actors she has helped find success in the business, such as Philip Winchester of Belgrade, who was cast in “The Patriot” at 14 years old and has gone on to starring roles in films such as “Rogue” (2022) and TV shows like “Strike Back” and “Law and Order: SVU.”
Buckingham credits the Yellowstone Film Ranch and founders Carter Boehm, Colin Davis and Richard Gray with drawing a slate of new productions to Montana.
“Their foresight to build and fund that Westen film set was brilliant and it brought the movies in,” Buckingham said.
The first was “Murder at Yellowstone City,” directed by Gray. Since then, Buckingham as worked on films such as “The Redeemer” and the upcoming “Death on the Dearborn” and “Outlaws,” starring Mario Van Peebles, Whoopi Goldberg and Cedric the Entertainer.
Buckingham said she is looking for “a character” when she casts — someone with an interesting face and a strong presence. But nothing is guaranteed. Directors usually have the final say.
“I tell my actors there’s no rhyme or reason to how a director picks,” Buckingham said. “It’s like falling in love. There’s a spark that happens and no one can tell you why.”
Buckingham finds people everywhere. Years ago, looking for “cowboy types” for a commercial, she approached a group of actual cowboys sitting down for breakfast at a cafe in Manhattan. The old timers claimed to be too old, and pointed her to the youngest among them, barely meeting her eye under the brim of his hat. He appeared at the end of the commercial, peering out at the camera just as he had in their initial meeting. Later, he told Buckingham that residuals from that one commercial paid his way through college. He was the first person in his family to earn a degree.

IF YOU GO ...
Bozeman Film Society screens “The Old Way” (r ated r, 95 minutes) at 7 p.m. on March 8 in the Emerson’s crawford Theater, 111 S. Grand ave. in Bozeman. General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students at www.bozemanfilmsociety.org. Beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks and snacks are available for purchase in the Emerson Ballroom. “The Old Way” is directed by Brett donowho and stars Nicholas cage. a Q&a with local casting director Tina Buckingham and a panel of Montana actors will follow the screening.
Buckingham, who naturally stands out in a crowd by nature of her ginger red head of curls. Beau Linnell was taking tickets at a concert at The Armory when he introduced himself to Buckingham as an actor seeking roles in film. Linnell landed his first role in “The Old Way,” where he gets more screen time than any first time actor Buckingham has cast. Linnell was asked to stay on set longer, learn to ride (and fall off) a
horse and take on a death scene.
“He’s a brilliant actor,” Buckingham said. “He just had it from Day 1.”
Buckingham first spied another “The Old Way” actor on stage at the Ellen Theatre a couple years ago. Everett Blunck was 11 at the time.
“He is in the opening scene watching his father be hung and begging the townspeople to help him,” Buckingham said. “He made
the director cry.”
Blunck is now a card-carrying member of the acting union SAG-AFTRA. He was also cast in 2022’s “Bring on the Dancing Horses” with Kate Bosworth and the upcoming “Blood for Dust.” He’s auditioning for a lead role in “Rust,” which will resume filming in Montana this spring following a hiatus due to the fatal shooting on set outside of Sante Fe, New Mexico. The role had been previously cast, but the actor aged out of the role, Buckingham said.
Linnell and Blunck are both slated to appear on the post-film panel, alongside Buckingham and actors Phillip Aguirre, Katelyn Bauer and Jenna Ciralli.
“The Old Way” opened for a limited theater release on Jan. 6. It played for two weeks in Livingston, Buckingham said. The
Bozeman Film Society screening will be its first time on the big screen in Bozeman. Given the state’s rich history of filmmaking, McGrory said screening Montana-made films seems to be a natural fit for the organization.
“It’s a great way to share with everybody how much talent there is in our state from crew to actors, costumers, lighting,” she said. “We have a great pool of filmmaking professionals in the state going back decades.”
Plus, the there is a palpable excitement in the atmosphere for these types of screenings.
“It feels more like an event because you’re really there rooting on the people that have worked on the film,” McGrory said. “Having cast and crew in the audience really puts into sharp focus how much of a collaborative project making a movie is.”

BY GEORGE DICKIEBradley seeks splendor at Sawgrass in 2023 Players Championship
With the PGA Tour losing a number of golfers to LIV Golf, the field for this year’s Players Championship will be missing many its top finishers from 2022, including winner Cameron Smith.
Keegan Bradley, this is your opportunity.
In the tournament dubbed golf’s unofficial fifth major last year, the 36-year-old Vermont native came into the final day at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., near the top of the leaderboard. In fact, he was one shot from the lead after a birdy on the 16th hole. But then came No. 17.
The infamous island hole has laid waste to many a golfer’s hopes as North Florida’s swirling March winds tend to deposit many a 140-yard tee shot in the surrounding water. Only on this day, it wasn’t the wind that did Bradley in so much as poor putting. After sticking the landing on the green, he proceeded to three-putt the hole.
That was followed by a double bogey on No. 18 lowlighted by a punch shot from the trees that found water. And like that, his hopes were dashed as Smith went on to his second victory of 2022 and Bradley wound up fifth, his best career finish on the Stadium Course.
He’ll return to take another crack at victory against a field that will include former tourney champs Justin Thomas (2021) and Rory McIlroy (2019) as well as top 2023 money winners Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay and Collin Morikawa when the 2023 Players Championship gets going Thursday, March 9, and airs on Golf Channel and NBC.
