“Whether you’re writing it, performing it, listening to it, when it feels right for the moment, that’s a good song,” Millsap said Monday from Nashville, where he was moving his belongings into storage and prepping for his latest tour, which stops in Bozeman for an Aug. 31 show at the Filling Station. “Something I’ve learned to really love and lean into about art, is that everybody is going to hear it from their perspective and it is going to mean something that could be exactly what you meant, or it could be way off the mark. Everybody brings their whole life to those lyrics and those melodies.”

BY RACHEL HERGETT FOR THE CHRONICLE Parker Millsap was 19 when he released his first album, “Palisade,” a young musician steeped in the Red Dirt scene of North Texas and his native Oklahoma. His style evolved out of a childhood listening to the likes of Texas acoustic guitarist Robert Earl Keen and Ry Cooder, who started out as a bluesman and became massively influential with his musical explorations.

Performing amid a global pandemic has been a test of patience for Millsap, who has been on the road solo, with a full band and as a trio over the past year. He knows fans may choose to stay home if he is booked in a town where COVID-19 case numbers are high. However, Millsap said years of gigging in his native Oklahoma as he grew his career prepared him for small audiences. Parker Millsap is at the Filling Station in Bozeman on Wednesday, Aug. 31, with support by King Ropes and Matt Wallin. Doors open at 7 p.m., with music beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 at https://www.sellout.io/events/ parker-millsap. (Provided photo)

Millsap moved to Nashville a couple years after “Palisade,” releasing four more albums and placing his focus on the craft of a song. He considers himself a songwriter first, then a guitarist and a singer, in that order. But each plays into the other.

The identity of the celebrity is found the TV Challenge,

We’ve all talked about the possibility one day of doing a O’Brien-family movie, which I think would be a wonderful thing. I can’t speak for Hallmark, but I know that there’s hope on the part of our extraordinary writers to do stories that would take each of the couples to the next stage of their lives. That’s all wishful thinking, though. Right now, we’re focused on having as many people as possible watch this season.

To speak of one of your earlier series, can you talk about your special relationship with your young co-star Vivien Cardone while filming “Everwood”? My children were all of 4 and 8, and I went to Utah by myself and tried to get home to the kids when I could. She also was apart from her family, and she was 7 years old. I went to her and said, “Listen, I’ll be your dad for the run of the show if you’ll be my kid.” The hardest part of what we do, I think, is being away from our families for long periods of time. And she and I are still very close.

“We’re judging on taste, presentation and creativity,” Kornfeld says. “So depending on how lost we are, we may find ourselves leaning more into creativity.”

At the end of each episode, the chef with the most successful dish, as determined by a local chef and a guest judge, wins and gets the chance to have their dish put on that restaurant’s menu. However outside the box it may be.

“When we’re trying to recreate a dish,” Habersberger explains, “we’re always trying to recreate the core of the dish, then put a fun twist on it that makes it so that it’s something that no one’s had before. Not always a good something no one’s ever had before, but it was definitely something no one’s ever had before. So there’s the tasting the dish and then trying to creatively create something new without actually being trained chefs who are good at that.”

In Wednesday’s opener, the Try Guys visit Nashville and the Indian restaurant Chaatable, where they try their hands at making dosas, which are similar to a crepe but made with fermented dough.

The twist here is that the Try Guys, who cut their comedic teeth as viral sensations on YouTube, have no culinary training but a few chops in the kitchen, so they’re going on mainly their own intuition and past experience.

Viral sensations Try Guys bring their brand of comedy to Food Network with ‘No-Recipe Road Trip’ Keith Habersberger, Zach Kornfeld, Ned Fulmer and Eugene Lee Yang are all about trial and error. In fact, it’s practically baked into the name of their comedy troupe – the Try Guys. And now they’re bringing their comic approach to cooking with “No-Recipe Road Trip With the TryPremieringGuys.”

Wednesday, Aug. 31, on Food Network, the hourlong series finds the quartet going on the road to cities such as Atlanta, Los Angeles and Nashville and dropping in on two establishments to try their signature dish and then try to recreate it without the aid of a recipe or any instruction but with 100 percent commitment.

“That was challenging,” Kornfeld says. “I would say half of us ended up making pancakes.” “I would say all of us made pancakes,” Habersberger adds. “I don’t think anyone successfully made a dosa as a dosa should be. Also, none of us really knew what a dosa was ... so we had to figure out how to make a quick dosa, which is really something that kind of – I wouldn’t say doesn’t exist but is not the popular version of it. So it was super hard and very confusing. None of us did anything right.’

“Rocky” (AMC, Saturday, Sept. 3): “Yo, Adrian!” The Oscarwinning 1976 success that launched both a franchise and Sylvester Stallone’s stardom, famously also written by Stallone, launches a marathon that also includes the first four sequels. As anyone even slightly familiar with movies likely knows, “Rocky” is the saga of a scrappy Philadelphia boxer who’s given a one-in-a-million shot against reigning heavyweight champ Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers).

“Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” (Turner Classic Movies, Wednesday, Aug. 31):

Director Stanley Kubrick’s famously dark 1964 comedy, which finds humor in the subject of impending nuclear war, is among the attractions being shown as TCM’s annual “Summer Under the Stars” event wraps up with an all-day salute to Peter Sellers. He plays multiple roles as a rogue general (Sterling Hayden) orders an attack on the Soviet Union ... sparking mayhem among various military officials and world leaders.

Not only does “The Graduate” remain one of the most brilliant satires yet made, it also helped launch the counterculture wave that pervaded films toward the end of its decade. Currently streaming on Paramount+, the landmark 1967 comedy directed by Mike Nichols (who won an Oscar for it) charts the post-college odyssey of Benjamin Braddock (an ideal Dustin Hoffman), who’s more than a little worried about his future. His aimlessness marks him prey for his parents’ seductive friend Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft, also sterling), and when he falls for her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross), that means trouble. Songs by Simon & Garfunkel are used superbly, and the supporting cast is loaded with expert talents including Buck Henry (who also co-wrote the screenplay), William Daniels, Murray Hamilton and (extremely briefly) Richard Dreyfuss.

“Friends” (TBS, Wednesday, Aug. 31): How does a television classic begin? In the case of this enduring sitcom, the answer is in a repeat of the 1994 pilot episode that introduced the world to siblings Monica and Ross (Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer) and their pals Rachel, Chandler, Phoebe and Joey (Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc). All of them had done series previously, but it took them together – plus clever writing and directing – to make home-screen history.

“I’ve dabbled here and there and been able to explore other modes of creating in a way that is really just fun and also is starting to kind of merge with my more songwriterly tendencies,” Millsap said. In his ears this week, Millsap has what he describes as “loosely new age ambient” meditations from Laraaji and the desert blues of Etran De L’Aïr. Fans, however, won’t be too surprised by the current set. Millsap is touring with three of the four main players on his last album, and they haven’t practiced some of his compositions that are more sonically explorative.“Butit’s coming,” he said. “It’s never going to be the main thing that I do, but it’s something that I love and I love to do, so I think that it’s only honest to do it for people.”Millsap finished recording his sixth album this summer, though it has yet to be mixed and mastered. The album is set for release in 2023.

“I’m broadening my perspective of what a song can be,” Millsap said. Maybe the song is the band playing and him singing, but just a melody and not lyrics. Maybe it is something else entirely.

Parker Millsap finished recording his 2021 album “Be Here Instead” in late spring 2020 when gathering and touring were not possibilities.

Parker Millsap is at the Filling Station in Bozeman on Wednesday, Aug. 31, with support by King Ropes and Matt Wallin. Doors open at 7 p.m., with music beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 at https://www.sellout.io/ events/parker-millsap. The event is presented by Electric River Presents.

“I’m usually trying to inhabit the songs,” he said, “no matter what is going on out there.”Inthe last few years, Millsap’s songwriting has shifted. Where his focus was once more character-driven songs, he now turns to personal experience as inspiration. In terms of inhabiting songs, this direction makes it “a little easier to tap in,” Millsap said. “…This is me and my thoughts.” While writing, he now tries to be more instinctual, to not let the analytical parts of his brain take over the creative process. “If something comes to you, write it down, and trust it’s trying to lead you somewhere,” he said. “In writing a whole lot and not over analyzing it, I think I’m saying a little bit more of what I need to say, rather than saying something that I think I need to say.”Millsap finished recording his 2021 album “Be Here Instead” in late spring 2020 when gathering and touring were not possibilities. At home, he took the opportunity to incorporate writing in his day-to-day. At some point, Millsap said, he will wander into the music room, sit down and play, tapping into new ideas and emotions whether for an hour or five. “I try to have at least an idea every day, if not a complete song,” he said. “I was really able to integrate creative practice into my life in a way that I hadn’t been able to prior to the pandemic. That made it easier to talk aboutMillsapmyself.”has also taken license to probe musically. He allows himself the space and time to play with ideas, like taking a riff he created while trying to find the right piano part for one song and turning it into something entirely different — in that example and Indian music-inspired instrumental piece.

“I’ve played so many shows to like 5 people, so if 15 or 20 people show up, I’m not too upset,” he said. Whether there is an audience of 15 people or hundreds of thousands — like in his appearance on “Conan” — Millsap approaches his performance the same.

If things go as hoped, when Millsap returns from tour he will be the owner of a house with a rehearsal space. And for the future, he said he is simply looking forward to collaborating with “Nashville folk” in the space.“Ihave no set destination,” Millsap said. “I just like to play music.”

In July, Kyrgios made it past the quarterfinal in a Grand Slam for the first time in his career with his loss to Djokovic in a hotly contested final at Wimbledon. He followed that up in August by becoming the first person to win the men’s singles and doubles titles (with partner John Sock) at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. He’s also made semifinals in singles at Houston, Stuttgart and Halle and won doubles titles with Thomas Kokkinakis in the Australian Open and at Atlanta.

Of course, at Flushing Meadows his singles record is less impressive, having made it only as far as the third round four times. But with his powerful serve and his hot hand, Kyrgios might be a better bet than his No. 37 ranking might indicate.

Indeed, the 27-year-old Australian has been playing the best tennis of his career of late and could challenge the favorites for the title in the tennis year’s fourth and final major, especially with three-time tourney champ Novak Djokovic sitting it out due to his vaccination status and four-time winner Rafael Nadal injured.
