BOZEMAN DAILY CHRONICLE
‘The Sound Inside’ explores life, lit
BY RACHEL HERGETT FOR THE CHRONICLE
What is a mystery?
Google’s Oxford Languages search includes “a novel, play, or movie dealing with a puzzling crime, especially a murder,” in its top definitions.
Yet “The Sound Inside” by playwright Adam Rapp doesn’t begin with a murder. Rather, it is an imminent death that colors the two-character, 90-minute play opening at Live from the Divide on Friday, Sept. 30, featuring Cara Wilder and Corey Renfree.
At the center of this twilight is Wilder as Bella Baird, a lonesome, aging professor of creative writing at Yale who is told she is dying. It’s cancer, of course, and comes with a 20% chance of survival — if the doctor is generous.
A student arrives in her office, having not made the proper appointment through the online scheduling system. It irks Bella. Yet through his airs, as one often wears in their college years, it remains obvious this student, Christopher Dunn, respects her.
Christopher wants to discuss his writing, a novel in progress about a college student named Christopher. He is persistent and keeps returning. The two develop a closeness. But “The Sound Inside” isn’t “Harold and Maude,” Wilder says. The relationship is nuanced and complex. It twists and turns. Some may call it a mystery.
Aside from a puzzling crime, “mystery,” as defined in the Oxford Advanced American Dictionary, could be “1. something that is difficult to understand or to explain” and “2. (often used as an adjective) a person or thing that is strange and interesting because you do not know much about them or it.”
In “The Sound Inside,” teacher and student begin to unravel each other’s mysteries.Their dynamic shifts. As Christopher revises his writing, he and Bella find a commonality in literature.

“Movie: The Last Duel”
“The D’Amelio Show”
This unscripted series follows up the smashing success of its first season with more drama under the glare of the internet spotlight in Season 2, as the D’Amelios’ meteoric rise creates oncein-a-lifetime opportunities in business and personal relationships — but they could come at the cost of what makes them a tight-knit family. (ORIGINAL)
Ridley Scott’s 2021 historical action drama unfolds in three distinct “chapters” reflecting the perspective of the three main characters. Matt Damon stars as Jean de Carrouges, a knight who feels compelled to challenge his old friend, Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) to a duel after Jean’s wife, Marguerite (Jodie Comer), accuses Jacques of raping her. Ben Affleck takes a supporting role.
“Movie: Joe”
Nicolas Cage stars in this 2013 adaptation of Larry Brown’s novel as the title character, an ex-convict who’s doing his best to go straight — but that becomes difficult when he befriends a youngster (Tye Sheridan, “Mud”) whose father is abusive. Joe then has to make a decision whether to do something about the situation in his own way.
“Ice Road Truckers”
The first two seasons of this unscripted History series that follows six hardy drivers whose job it is to drive supplies hundreds of miles to diamond miners in northern Canada — over frozen lakes that could give way under them any minute — comes to the streaming service.

OF ‘CSI: VEGAS’ ON CBS
How is it for you to reprise your “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” role of Catherine Willows among a new group of actors on “CSI: Vegas”?
It’s always fun to be around younger energy and new ideas. Certainly, they’re a lot more adept at technology than I am ... or ever will be! I really feel respected (by the show’s other stars) for my 40-year career, and that’s something I appreciate.
Is it meaningful to you that original “CSI” creator Anthony E. Zuiker is still involved with the franchise as an executive producer?
He actually wrote an episode (of “CSI: Vegas”) for me that involves my (character’s) daughter, and that was a great experience. Anthony left “CSI” when the “NY” spinoff launched, and he was sort of working on the “Miami” spinoff, but he wasn’t around our show as much after Season 2 from what I remember.
With this episode, he was there every day, sort of co-directing. He had such a specific vision for this, and it was fun, though it was hard work. I felt that both of us had matured to the point where we were much more open to making things tighter or whatever. With almost every take, we were fine-tuning it. The give-and-take was exciting.

“Movie: Support Your Local Sheriff!”
Makes sense; after all, he can toss you in jail. A stranger (James Garner) traveling to Australia stumbles into a gold-rush town and ends up becoming the sheriff. He manages to tame the lawless town and keep the peace by using his brains instead of his gun. Directed by Burt Kennedy, this 1969 comedy also stars Joan Hackett, Walter Brennan, Bruce Dern and Harry Morgan.
“Movie: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”
In director Peter Jackson’s first installment of the epic trilogy, Frodo the hobbit (Elijah Wood) is enlisted to help the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen). Evil forces are gathering to control the land, and Frodo is given a magic ring, which he must destroy. He is accompanied on his journey by a noble assortment of companions. Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, Sean Astin and Dominic Monaghan co-star.
“Friday Night Lights”
Director Peter Berg’s 2004 drama about a high school football team in an economically depressed Texas town was adapted for this critically lauded though often low-rated series about the lives of those in and around the Dillon Panthers, a team in a close-knit rural West Texas town. Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Zach Gilford and Taylor Kitsch are among the cast of the first season, which streams here.
“Movie: Catherine Called Birdy”
“Girls” creator Lena Dunham co-wrote and directed this adventure flick set in 1290 England that follows Lady Catherine (Bella Ramsey, “Game of Thrones”) aka “Birdy,” as she thwarts repeated attempts by her father, the destitute Lord Rollo (Andrew Scott, “His Dark Materials”) to marry her off for money. Lesley Sharp, Sophie Okonedo and Joe Alwyn also star. (ORIGINAL)

It’s Week 4 of the 2022 NFL regular season – do you know where your portable gas grill, smoker or deep fryer are?
Yes, the NFL season is well underway and fans across the country are once again engaging in what is fast becoming the other national pastime – tailgating. So if you want hit a pro game and join the party in the parking lot, here are a few ideas for some imaginative and delicious eats to serve up before kickoff courtesy of FoodNetwork.com.
On the more esoteric side, there is Guy Fieri, whose stuffed pupusas (www. foodnetwork.com/shows/guys-big-bite/ guidos-tailgate-greats) are guaranteed to satisfy any hungry pre-game diner. This is a Mexican dish consisting of a thick corn tortilla stuffed with any number of fillings including chorizo, a variety of vegetables and cheese, then is baked or fried. Best of all, they can be made ahead of time so no muss, no fuss once at the stadium. Hearty fare for a hardy crowd.
If finger foods aren’t your thing, then perhaps Melissa d’Arabian’s game day chili (www.foodnetwork.com/shows/ten-dollardinners-with-melissa-darabian/videos/tendollar-tailgate) might be. Here, she makes hers with the usual ingredients including ground beef, onions, black beans, tomato sauce, canned tomatoes and seasonings, and adds bacon and beer for a malty flavor. And then there is a surprise ingredient –cocoa. Don’t judge before you try.
For sides, how about Tyler Florence’s potato salad (www.foodnetwork.com/ shows/tylers-ultimate/videos/ultimatetailgate)? here, the “Tyler’s Ultimate” chef draws on his Southern heritage to make a mixture from small Yukon Gold potatoes, hard boiled egg, salt, minced red onion, dill, parsley, scallions, dill pickles and brine plus mayo, dijon mustard, olive oil and lemon to give it a creamy flavor. And don’t forget the capers. Of course, this is made ahead of time as well but it’ll be worth the extra work.

Sylvester Stallone generates a ‘Cliffhanger’
The Rocky and Rambo characters have been the prime successes of Sylvester Stallone’s career, but he’s had his share of other hits, too. A perfect example is the well-crafted, stunt-crammed 1993 adventure “Cliffhanger,” now streaming on Hulu. Directed by action veteran Renny Harlin (“Die Hard 2”), the picture makes great use of scenic and mountainous Italian locations (though the story presumably is set in America’s Rocky Mountains).
Stallone plays newly returned rescue ranger Gabe Walker, at odds with longtime colleague Hal Tucker (Michael Rooker) after a tragedy. They’re forced, literally at gunpoint, to team up again by a master criminal (an enjoyably scenery-chewing John Lithgow) determined to recover the sizable robbery loot lost in an airborne accident.

“Gilligan’s Island” (MeTV, Sunday, Oct. 2): How did an apparent ghost decide to haunt the island and the castaways? That’s the big question in “Ghost-A-Go-Go,” one of many Halloween-y episodes of classic shows that MeTV is featuring through October. Fun trivia: The supposed poltergeist is played by Richard Kiel, alias villain Jaws in two of Roger Moore’s 007 adventures.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (Freeform, Monday, Oct. 3): The original, Joss Whedon-written 1992 movie that inspired the much-loved television series helps lead Freeform’s annual “31 Days of Halloween” festival this year. Kristy Swanson was the first actress to play the unlikely opponent of the undead, leading a notable cast also including Donald Sutherland and two talents who had runs in “Beverly Hills, 90210,” Luke Perry and then-double-Oscar-winner-to-be Hilary Swank.
“The Flip Wilson Show” (Decades, Saturday, Oct. 8): Comedian Wilson had a huge success in the early 1970s with his now rarely seen variety series, with many skits featuring Wilson’s sassy and very popular character Geraldine Jones. This “Decades Binge” showcasing of the program runs virtually all weekend and features musical guests ranging from Ella Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder to Bing Crosby and Johnny Cash.
“Westworld” (Turner Classic Movies, Saturday, Oct. 8): The subsequent HBO series has been a lot more complex, but writer-director Michael Crichton’s original 1973 sci-fi tale does a highly entertaining job of laying down the basics. Richard Benjamin and James Brolin play visitors to a resort where guests get to live out past eras, with Yul Brynner as an Old West gunslinger who’s actually one of the robots that pose problems when the technology runs amok.

“The Sound Inside” script is peppered with references to the point one hopes a reading list is provided. There is Seneca, Joyce Carol Oates, Agatha Christie, Hunter S. Thompson, and of course, Fyodor Dostoevsky, whose words from “Crime and Punishment” contribute the epigraph on the back of the title page of Dunn’s novella: “We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once, before a word is spoken.”
Writing and the immense world of words and writers becomes a shared vocabulary for Bella and Christopher, their language its own prose.
“I think that’s kind of a cool message for people that maybe struggle to find connection,” Renfree said. “If you find that while you are staying true to your passion, it’s incredible. If they didn’t have that love for language and literature and art, they may not have crossed paths and they may not have had the profound effect on each other that they did.”
Renfree said he has had similar struggles with connecting, “but it’s always easier through art. That’s just like our characters.”
Also like the characters, Renfree was a student of Wilder’s at Montana State University. Though their relationship is decidedly less complicated. He last appeared on stage in Bozeman in a Wilder-directed play, 2017’s “Spring Awakening,” and then kept in touch when he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting.
After Wilder fell in love with “The Sound Inside,” she proposed Renfree extend a trip to Montana that was originally for a wedding for the production. Now, Renfree will have to duck out of the reception a little early to make his call for one of the performances.
Wilder, a Bozeman actress whose varied resume includes the sketch show Broad Comedy and
heavy drama such as “August: Osage County” and “A Doll’s House, Part 2,” is a master of emoting on stage, bringing a fierce solemnity and vulnerability to her role.
“I was really drawn to the character myself. I feel like I can relate to her in certain ways,” Wilder said, quickly adding “I don’t have cancer” and knocking on the edge of the stage with her knuckles. “I did teach for a number of years, so I can relate to that — how she feels about teaching and students and the joy she gets from it. Then also her solitude, in a way, I can relate to.
And her age and what happens when you get to be ‘a certain age.’ Often women in their 50s can feel invisible.”
In a New York Times starred review, Jesse Green called the play “a tragedy about fiction, both the kind we read and the
kind we live.” The play’s successful Broadway run in 2019 led to six Tony Award nominations, including best play. In Bozeman, Wilder is also directing and independently producing the production. Though rights are usually reserved for large productions of new plays, Wilder wrote the author asking for special permission to stage “The Sound Inside” in Montana. Rapp wrote back. Permission was granted. People are all just people, Wilder said. We’re another of life’s mysteries.
“I like that (the play has) been described as a mystery, because I really do see it that way,” Wilder said. “There aren’t that many cool mysteries out there. Instead of a sad story about relationships or anything like that, it’s more thought-provoking mystery that leaves you with probably more questions than anything else.”
“I was really drawn to the character myself. I feel like I can relate to her in certain ways. I did teach for a number of years, so I can relate to that — how she feels about teaching and students and the joy she gets from it. Then also her solitude, in a way, I can relate to. Jefferson looks to set records in Minnesota
There’s a new coach and a new offensive scheme in Minnesota. And if one player stands to benefit, it will be Justin Jefferson.
Indeed, in their third year wide receiver, the Vikings have a talented pass catcher who has taken the league by storm in his first two seasons and figures to set a few records if he continues his trajectory.

Entering this season, the Vikings’ first round draft pick out of LSU in 2020 is the only player to amass over 3,000 yards in his first two NFL campaigns, tallying 1,400 his rookie year and 1,616 in 2021. If he can add another 1,148 to his total, he would eclipse the three-year mark of 4,163 set by Vikings legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss in 1998-2000. That seems almost like a fait accompli given Jefferson’s ability to beat defenders with his size, speed, hands and routerunning abilities as well as his sympatico with Vikes quarterback Kirk Cousins. He also has a new head coach in former Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, under whose three receiver scheme Cooper Kupp flourished in 2021 (1,947 receiving yards) on the way to the Rams’ victory in Super Bowl LVI, for which Kupp won game MVP honors.
Jefferson and the Vikings can be seen in action the morning of Sunday, Oct. 2, when they take on the New Orleans Saints in a game airing on NFL Network from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
