‘M*A*S*H’ goes Farr for anniversary memories
One of television’s most classic sitcoms is marking its 50th anniversary this month, and the event gets a special spin as MeTV marks the occasion by celebrating “M*A*S*H” with a week of co-star Jamie Farr’s favorite episodes from Monday, Sept. 12, through Friday, Sept. 16. Two shows will be presented back-to-back each night.
Though Farr’s character – Corporal Maxwell Klinger, who was perpetually in pursuit of a discharge from duty in the Korean War – is very present in the selected stories, he’s not necessarily the principal player in them, underscoring the true ensemble piece that “M*A*S*H” was. A good example is the first night’s “The Trial of Henry Blake,” which finds that lieutenant colonel character (played by McLean Stevenson) brought up on charges by Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan and Maj. Frank Burns (Loretta Swit, Larry Linville).
“The Blair Witch Project” (Hulu, streaming): Much-imitated, even now, this 1999 chiller became a huge independent hit by showing the “found footage” of a trio of young amateur filmmakers (played by Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams) after they ventured into a forest and evidently discovered too much about a dangerous legend.
“Hotel” (Turner Classic Movies, Monday, Sept. 12): Before Arthur Hailey’s novel “Airport” was turned into one of the most profitable movies ever made, another of his books serviced this glossy 1967 drama set at a venerable New Orleans hotel being targeted for a takeover. Rod Taylor plays the manager and Melvyn Douglas the owner in a cast that also includes Karl Malden, Merle Oberon, Michael Rennie, Catherine Spaak, Kevin McCarthy and Richard Conte. A later TV-series version changed the setting to San Francisco.
