Alberto Hernandez brings style, art to hats

‘The start of a good conversation’

RACHEL HERGETT

For the Chronicle

Hats in a variety of shapes and sizes grace the walls of Inland Boutique on Bozeman’s Main Street, in the space long held by Carter’s Boots and Repair. While the boutique is busy on a Saturday, the real magic is happening through the beaded curtain and into Alberto Hernandez’ custom hat workshop, Meshika.

A hat must fit a person, enhancing the proportions of their face and making a person look and feel their best when they wear it. And a truly good hat tells a story.

“I’m never going to sell you a hat just to sell you a hat and get a quick buck out of it,” Hernandez said.

Shelves in the workshop are filled with bits and pieces that could be used to decorate hats — ribbons and feathers, cut up bits of Louis Vuitton signature printed leather, crystals, snakeskin and so much more. Hernandez likes when people bring their own items, flush with personal meaning and tales ranging from sad to impressive.

For one hat, a man who had been shot trying to kill a snake brought in the snake’s skin, along with the staples from his wounds and part of his bloody T-shirt.

“A good hat is always the start of a good conversation,” Hernandez said.

Hatmaking is not new to Hernandez, a third generation artisan who has been working on his own for the last 16 years. Hernandez was raised in Guanajuato, Mexico, also known as GTO, where he helped his father and grandfather make hats for the local charros, or horse riders — wide brimmed with a high rounded crown.

Checking in with JANE PAULEY

“Movie: How to Blow up a Pipeline”

A group of young environmentalists plot a daring operation to sabotage an oil pipeline in West Texas. Xochitl (Ariela Barer) is a young woman concerned for her future upon seeing the growing effects of climate change within her community and family life. A flash heat wave claims the life of Xochitl’s mother, and her best friend Theo (Sasha Lane) is diagnosed with terminal cancer with suspicion it’s related to the region’s environmental pollution. Frustrated by political inaction, Xochitl pursues more radical methods, which draws the attention of friends and foes.

Sunday-morning television has plenty of hard news, but it also boasts the relatively genteel touch of Jane Pauley.

A newcomer on the national scene when she succeeded Barbara Walters as the weekday co-anchor of NBC‘s “Today” in 1976, she has remained prominent in news programming ever since, currently presiding over the popular magazine program “CBS News Sunday Morning” (having replaced Charles Osgood in 2016). Pauley introduces news reports and features, sometimes including interviews that she conducts herself (as she did recently in a chat with her friend and former “Today” anchoring partner Tom Brokaw).

While that has been Pauley’s TV base for a number of years now, she also has had considerable runs in other venues. After 12 years on “Today,” she resurfaced on “Dateline NBC,” where she and Stone Phillips were anchors for 11 years. Pauley then went into syndicated talk for one season with the appropriately titled “The Jane Pauley Show,” then she returned to “Today” with a recurring segment about senior living.

After a single appearance on “Sunday Morning” in 2014, the response to Pauley was so strong, she was hired as a contributor to the program … which turned into her current hosting gig when Osgood left.

A winner of two Daytime Emmy Awards and a News & Documentary Emmy, Pauiey has numerous other honors including an Edward R.Murrow Award, a Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism, a Gracie Allen Award and induction into the Broadcast and Cable Hall of Fame. With the way her career continues to impress, don’t be surprised if Pauley has a much longer list of accolades by the time everything is said and done for her.

“Movie: Transfusion”

After a devastating loss, Ryan (Sam Worthington) and his young son Billy (Edward Carmody) are struggling to reconnect and to move forward in their lives. In a desperate attempt to protect his son from being taken away, Ryan is thrust into to the criminal underworld, where his former SAS brother runs things. As he becomes increasingly entangled in organized crime, Ryan begins to realize that the consequences of his choices may be far greater than he ever imagined.

Military forces race to “Ice Station Zebra” on TCM

Reportedly the favorite film of vastly wealthy recluse Howard Hughes, “Ice Station Zebra” clearly is liked a lot by Turner Classic Movies, too … based on how often it’s shown there.

The channel gives the Alistair MacLean-created 1968 adventure another run Friday, Aug. 25, as part of a “Summer Under the Stars” tribute day to co-star Ernest Borgnine. The picture is a testosterone fest since the cast is virtually all-male, which works for its story of American and Soviet military forces racing to be the first to reach the title Arctic outpost –and the desperately coveted contents of a capsule ejected from a fallen satellite.

Rock Hudson plays the commander of a U.S. submarine sent to the site on a retrieval mission, but he and his crew aren’t the only ones headed there. Russian soldiers also are on a course to the location, traveling by air, and Hudson picks up several people en route: a Soviet defector (Borgnine), a British spy (Patrick McGoohan) and a Marine superior (Jim Brown). The tensions among the latter three run quite high, complicating Hudson’s assignment considerably.

John Sturges, a filmmaker known for brawny tales (“The Magnificent Seven,” “The Great Escape”), was an ideal choice to direct “Ice Station Zebra.” Its linear storytelling is couched in a big production design that has such aspects as the submarine rising from the depths and submerging back into them, a case of sea sabotage that puts everyone aboard the sub at risk (in a wonderfully tense sequence), and the climactic showdown in a chilly climate. That’s clearly a studio set, but it serves its purpose.

Alyssa Farah Griffin

Q: What is it in Alyssa Farah Griffin’s background that qualifies her to be a co-host of “The View”?

A: For a program that relies heavily on political conversation, Griffin is in the right place, having held several positions in the Republican administration between 2017 and 2020. She was the press secretary to the vice president, then special assistant to the president, and then deputy assistant to the secretary of defense for public affairs and press secretary to the United States Department of Defense.

After that, Griffin went into the business of being an analyst on television, working online for The Hill’s program and also appearing regularly on CNN – which she still does, while fulfilling her regular weekday job on ABC’s “The View.” She had been a guest on the latter show’s panel during 2021 and 2022, then was made a permanent co-host with the start of the series’ 26th season in the fall of 2022 (along with Ana Navarro, who’d had a similar arrangement).

Griffin came by her interest in public affairs naturally, being the daughter of Joseph Farah, who was an editor at both the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and the Sacramento Union. She wrote (as did her mother) for the website WorldNetDaily, which her father founded.

Elsewhere, Griffin was the captain of her high-school girls’ soccer team, and she has a black belt in karate. She married Justin Griffin in 2021, and some members of her family boycotted her wedding – including her father and stepmother – because of their political differences with her.

Secret showdown: “Bobby’s Triple Threat” takes the competition

Somewhere deep under the hustle and bustle of New York City stands a kitchen unlike any other: a kitchen built for titans. Only accessible by password — and to us lucky viewers — chef Bobby Flay invites the most talented in the industry to visit his underground kitchen and compete in another round of culinary’s most exclusive competition: Season 2 of “Bobby’s Triple Threat” begins Tuesday, Aug. 22, on Food Network.

The series, hosted and orchestrated by Flay, follows as a trio of culinary titans (talented chefs handpicked by Bobby) head to the host’s speakeasy-style kitchen, where they will face off in a secret showdown against some of the most skilled chefs in the game in order to see who really is the best of the best.

This season, Flay welcomes titans including Brooke Williamson, who earned worldwide acclaim as the youngest female chef to ever cook at the James Beard House; Michael Voltaggio, a Michelin star-rated chef and “Top Chef” winner; and Tiffany Derry, a two-time James Beard Award finalist, former “Top Chef” contestant, and current owner of Roots Southern Table.

“[The titans] have competed in and won countless tournaments, proving their culinary excellence

and securing their names and reputations among the very best in the biz,” Food Network explains. “This time, though, they won’t be competing to earn glory but to keep it. Over the course of three head-tohead rounds, elite chef-contestants will battle the titans and have their food judged in blind taste tests.” Making matters more complicated, Flay will choose an ingredient that must be featured in each dish.

Whoever finishes the competition on top earns not only bragging rights, but a whopping $25,000 prize.

“Season 1 of ‘Triple Threat’ was just a warm-up,” Flay recently claimed. “In Season 2, I welcome 10 of the best chefs in the country to take on the titans. The challengers walk through the speakeasy door with the utmost confidence — but will they walk out with the same swagger and $25,000? Not if my chefs have anything to say about it.”

The competition will put Bobby’s best to the test, however, as this season’s guest competitors include “Iron Chef” stars Michael Symon and Jose Garces; “Chopped” judge Scott Conant; Kelsey Bernard Clark; Esther Choi; Kelvin Fernandez; Byron Gomez; Rashida Holmes; Mei Lin and Shota Nakajima.

Season 2 of “Bobby’s Triple Threat” begins Tuesday, Aug. 22, on Food Network.

“Hair” is still worth getting into

The recent passing of Treat Williams makes a viewing of “Hair” bittersweet now, but director Milos Forman’s 1979 screen version of the hit stage musical is very much worth seeing for the amazing energy that the Vietnam War-era project retains in the transition from live theater to film … with Williams’ memorable performance no small part of that. MGM+ presents the movie Thursday, Aug. 24.

The actor plays Berger, the leader of a band of New York hippies – and a very strong influence on a military draftee (John Savage) who begins to second-guess his plans for a relatively conservative future after being exposed to the very free lifestyle of his new acquaintances. Beverly D’Angelo, Annie Golden and Melba Moore also are in the cast of the picture, which boasts songs that became iconic – including the title tune, “Aquarius,” “Let the Sunshine In” and “Good Morning Starshine.” A particular showstopper is Williams’ rendering of “I Got Life.”

Scheffler wants it all at Tour Championship

The culminating event of the PGA Tour is upon us, as the 2023 PGA Tour Championship tees off Aug. 23 to 27 at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Preliminary rounds air live on the Golf Channel, while CBS offers live coverage of the final rounds Saturday, Aug. 26, and Sunday, Aug. 27.

Born June 21, 1996, in Ridgewood, New Jersey, Scheffler spent most of his young life in Dallas. Before turning pro, Scheffler won the individual state title three years in a row and further sharpened his skills at the University of Texas, where he earned multiple all-American honors and helped his team win a national championship.

Bursting onto the professional golf scene in 2018, the American hasn’t missed a beat, climbing the ranks and proving to the golf world that he’s here to stay. One of Scheffler’s standout moments came during the 2020 PGA Championship when he made history by shooting the lowest score ever recorded in a major by a rookie.

This season, Scheffler is at it again, sitting at the top of the standings in both the world rankings and money leaderboard, earning over $18 million. He has had seven consecutive top-five finishes — the longest streak since Tiger Woods — and his 2.81 strokes gained tee-to-green this season is one of the best single-season paces for any player in the PGA since tracking began two years ago. Adding to an already impressive season, Scheffler is making a bogey or worse just 10.1% of the time, keeping him on pace for the lowest rate since — once again — Tiger Woods in 2000 (9.8).

Going into the final big tour event of the year, Scheffler has his work cut out for him, as the course is a competitive one. Sitting in the top five all season, Rory McIlroy is searching for his first PGA Championship victory since 2014 — a drought that McIlroy will look to put a stop to as players hit the green at East Lake Golf Club.

Hernandez didn’t mind making hats, but didn’t love it either.

Then, at 16, Hernandez saw Clint Eastwood in “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”

“It was pretty mesmerizing, how cool of hats they were,” said Hernandez. “I couldn’t stop thinking about them.”

Those were the hats he wanted to make, but those were’t the hats people wanted in Guanajuato.

Enter Mark Mejia, a hat maker based in Burbank, California. Mejia specialized in making hats for the movies — think Johnny Depp’s leather hat from “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Hernandez scored an internship with the hat maker, who owns Baron Hats, learning tricks that could make a new hat feel like it had been well loved and hard worn.

Soon, Hernandez would see hats he had a hand in making on billboards and the big screen. Though people would chuckle if he pointed them out, Hernandez said he felt a sense of satisfaction for his role in their creation.

“That was my first inspiration to create pieces of art that people can wear in the street,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez was in his shop on Saturday, resizing a hat he had donated to a fundraiser to combat noxious weeds. He had deconstructed the piece, removing the ornamental hatband and feathered charm, snipping the threads holding the leather sweatband stamped with “Handmade in Bozeman Montana,” and returning it to plain black felt.

While he worked, he talked about his history. Hernandez worked with model and hat maker Nick Fouquet in Venice Beach. He credits Fouquet with helping pave the way for custom hat makers by building his own brand, racking up free credits by bringing his own hats to photo shoots.

“It was very organic,” Hernandez said. “It was magic. That’s the way it’s supposed to be when you create something very special.”

Eventually, however, Hernandez felt the old nagging feeling. He wasn’t happy making hats, doing what he loved to do. But it was a fixable problem.

“I decided I wanted to start my own journey with my own brand, my own adventure, my own clientele, my own experience, you know?”

Now, Hernandez keeps a Meshika shop

in Venice Beach. He will return for a few months in October. Back in Mexico, his father and brother still make hats, and Hernandez helps them facilitate large orders.

He has developed his own style, incorporating paint spatter, or more recently tie dye. One signature style addition is the oft-copied quarter binding. Hernandez started incorporating a binding around only part of the brim of a hat after a patron brought in a vintage hat for repair.

“It had binding all the way around it, but everything else, it was completely destroyed. The only clean part intact was just a quarter. I was like ‘You know what?

I’m going to use it.’ I finished it up with stitches at the end and left the rest. That’s a cool thing.”

Many pieces feature a cast metal speartype weapon used by the Mexica people, his people. “Meshika” is based off the pronunciation of the tribe’s name. The company’s logo features the weapon, and his father’s handwriting.

Hats tend to be beaver felt, and Hernandez sources felt hat bodies from Winchester, Tennessee. The felt body takes 27 steps to create and consists of 220 grams of beverage felt. It can be dyed in a variety of colors.

The magic, however, comes in the shaping and decoration. Hernandez

shapes his by hand, pressing his thumbs into the rounded top to create a channel. Once that is perfected, he moves to the outer edges, where his thumbs bring in the sides in a signature cowboy style. Once shaped, Hernandez lights the hat on fire, burning off loose felt and leaving a silky smooth finish.

Hernandez said he can fix hats, stretch or shrink them to size, and generally clean them up. He considers it a service to the community. Bring in the hat your grandpa left you, he said. He will clean it up, fix it and help it find new life.

“It’s a beautiful feeling, fixing that,” Hernandez said. “They have a purpose again.”
