Kelsey Dzintars
doesn’t need anything special to make art.
“I’ve learned to paint and draw everywhere,” the Bozeman painter said on Monday during an interview with the Chronicle near her mural in progress north of Wild
Crumb at Wallace Avenue and Peach Street.
Dzintars created makeshift studio spaces in living rooms, bedrooms and basements in every house she called home. rough six summers as a guide on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, she learned to grab hold of tiny windows of time to paint or draw, like the ve minutes between when work is done in camp and clients return from a hike. is summer, though, she’s
staying put.
“It’s getting really di cult to stop that momentum for four months, be completely o the grid and then have to start projects up again,” Dzintars said.
Dzintars’ work is currently hanging at Map Brewing Company in Bozeman. She will be the featured artist at Lockhorn Cider House in August and at Cello in September.

BY JAY BOBBINQ: How did you feel about the way that the firefighters you supervise dealt with having cameras around them constantly during the filming of “LA Fire & Rescue”?
A: I was very proud of all of them. It’s not an easy thing to do, to invite somebody into your home like that and agree to be filmed every moment of every day. And not only in our “home,” but also on our emergency responses and medical calls.
They’re filming every step we’re taking, so we’ve got to be on our game 100 percent of the time. Otherwise, you’re going to look silly. That level of pressure, on top of an already pressure-filled situation, can be stressful … and everybody handled it professionally.
Q: Are you glad to have other California firehouses besides the one you were with at the time (Palmdale) showcased by the series?
A: Absolutely. The Los Angeles County Fire Department is unique in its ability to offer so many different experiences to firefighters. It’s one of the only departments where you can fight a wildfire, work on a boat, work on a helicopter, work in a high-rise — it’s got everything to offer to a fireman, and not many departments are able to do that. The producers of the series were able to capture a lot of the differences and uniqueness.
Q: Though you worked in the world of finance previously, you come from a family of firefighters, since that also has been the profession of your twin brother and your father (both named Steve). Does that give you special pride in doing your job?
A: It’s an honor to be able to serve, and we’re just trying to make everybody proud.

Barbecue is back: ‘BBQ Brawl’ and ‘BBQ USA’ return with new summer seasons
This summer is set to be big for barbecue lovers, as new seasons of both “BBQ Brawl” and “BBQ USA” premiere, airing back-to-back Monday, July 10, on Food Network.
With 10 new episodes, “BBQ Brawl” welcomes Sunny Anderson (“The Kitchen”) to the stage, joining Bobby Flay (“Beat Bobby Flay”) and Anne Burrell (“Worst Cooks in America”) as this season’s team captains, who will coach 12 of the country’s best pitmasters in high-stakes challenges, in the end determining who really is the “Master of ‘Cue.”
This time, the competition takes place in California, with Warner Bros. Entertainment dubbing the area “The home of Santa Maria-style barbecue and bountiful fresh ingredients.” There, the pitmasters put their skills to the test, along with their ability to work in teams as they are divided into groups of four, helmed by their given chef-slash-mentor.
The Warner Bros. release went on to promise an exciting first episode: “In an ode to the Golden State, they are serving up tacos in hopes of impressing the captains before they select their teams. Then they must impress with California-inspired smoky feasts,” presenting completed dishes to this season’s judges: Carson Kressley (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”), Brooke Williamson (“Top Chef”) and
“From epic live fire cooking and rib fests to whole suckling pigs, the competition is more cutthroat than ever this season – and the smack talking hits new heights,” promises Warner Bros.
The cookout doesn’t stop there. Season 2 of the cooking docuseries “BBQ USA” airs directly after, following host Michael Symon as he takes a bite out of American barbecue culture, celebrating unique flavors and traditions from across the country and shining the spotlight on the talented cooks who have accomplished such meat mastery. Along the way, Symon pits pitmasters against each other, letting them compete for cash prizes and recognition for their craft.
“My love for barbecue is no secret, and I’m also no stranger to cooking competitions, which is why I’m thrilled to be back on the road visiting the premier barbecue competitions across the country,” Symon told Warner Bros. “I love meeting the passionate pit and grill masters and connecting with them over their life’s passion for ‘cue and learning their tips and tricks to share with audiences.”
Both Symon and Flay will be able to do just that, with the premieres of “BBQ Brawl” and “BBQ USA,” Monday, July 10, on Food Network.

‘Fast Times’ remains fast fun
As the bottom half of a double feature from journalist turned filmmaker Cameron Crowe, Turner Classic Movies offers the very funny and sometimes surprisingly sweet “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” Saturday, July 15. Crowe adapted the 1982 film (which Amy Heckerling directed) from his same-named book for which he went incognito at a California high school, and though certain characters here may be more like caricatures – take, for instance, surfing-minded stoner Jeff Spicoli (played by Sean Penn) – the result is enormously entertaining.
Phoebe Cates, Judge Reinhold, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Forest Whitaker are among others playing students, with the great character actor Ray Walston the most notable adult on hand as … Mr. Hand, a no-nonsense history teacher whose classroom showdowns with the perpetually bemused Spicoli are among the very best scenes in the movie. The soundtrack is loaded with such hitmakers as Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Jimmy Buffett and Joe Walsh. (The first part of TCM’s Crowe double feature, incidentally, is the superb “Almost Famous.”)

A piece she created for the SLAM community mural project is now outside of the Emerson Center. She is the illustrator of children’s book “Hey Bear” and takes on a variety of projects big and small.
Dzintars said she “leveled up” after moving into her first dedicated studio space in the Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture in January.
“It’s been a long time coming,” she said. “It’s been really nice to have a home base like that where you’re surrounded by other artists. It’s like an institution here. The space has been great.”
In some ways, having a studio feels like a dream, Dzintars explained. After working out of her house and from the side of rivers and tops of mountains, she finally has a space where all her tools are organized. The stress of setting up has gone away. Plus, the space is welcoming for clients.
Dzintars’ painting style blends a graphic design aesthetic with an expressionist eye. She tends toward natural themes, drawing from “immersive wilderness experiences,” but with bold colors.
A native of Rapid City, South Dakota, Dzintars spent much of her youth outside exploring the Black Hills — skiing, hiking, waterskiing and more. Encouraged by her mother, the young Dzintars took every art class she could. She leaned into drawing for classmates, who provided further motivation with their praise of the work.
Dzintars began to see how her art merged with nature through her summers in the wilds of Idaho.
“When I started guiding, I thought it would be kind of like two separate worlds,” she said. “But it’s where my inspiration comes from. I’ve put my artwork toward nonprofits that are in conservation that support rivers and started working with
“When i started guiding, i thought it would be kind of like two separate worlds. But it’s where my inspiration comes from. i’ve put my artwork toward nonprofits that are in conservation that support rivers and started working with individuals along those lines as well. So i started to see all these connections come together.”
— Kelsey Dzintarsindividuals along those lines as well. So I started to see all these connections come together.”
Now, she is a member of 1% for the Planet, committed to donating a portion of her proceeds to nonprofit organizations committed to environmental conservation.
Dzintars came to Bozeman 18 years ago to study graphic design at Montana State University,
a degree program that also allowed her to take studio art classes. She worked as a graphic designer for five years before turning to freelance design and illustration, and more recently painting and illustration.
“I kind of really like the container or the problem or the vision that someone else gives me that I have to work inside of,” she said. “But I think
the exploratory process is important as well. I hope to keep on growing both sides.”
Success, Dzintars said, is getting to do creative work every day, especially on projects that align with her own values. It has become increasingly important for her to leverage her own gifts in service of the community and the environment.
“I realized the power (art) has to connect people with an emotion or memory, a connection to a special place whether they’ve been there or not. That drives our behaviors.”
This summer, she’s working on her first permanent outdoor murals. The first, on the north side of the Wildlands development that wraps around Wild Crumb and Fink’s Delicatessen, features a bugling elk. Dzintars has been working on the design for over
a year in collaboration with the development group for the Wildlands building. By the time the project is completed this fall, Dzintars will have contributed two murals and artwork for the vinyl wrap inside the elevator that ties the designs together with the building’s interior. Then, she’ll turn her attention to the Downtown Bozeman alleyway enhancement project, adding art to the alley behind the parking garage between Black and Tracy avenues.
Dzintars has been loving the larger scale of murals, and their innate connection to the community in the midst of development.
“I realized it kind of checked all the boxes,” Dzintars said. “It’s public art that everyone can enjoy.”

BY ROBERTO JOZEF playerprofileMLB’s first two-way allstar is still making waves
It’s that time of year again, as the Seattle Mariners prepare to host the 2023 MLB All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday, July 11.
Excitement is building for this year’s Midsummer Classic, which continues the long-standing tradition (since 1933) of showcasing baseball’s finest talent and celebrating the game fans love. While fans voted to send their favorites to the game, Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels was busy generating headlines with his impressive offensive play. Ohtani, who moved from Japan to the big leagues in 2018, appears to be on pace to match his 2021 MVP season when the pitcher/designated hitter became the first all-star in MLB history to be chosen as a two-way player.

With free agency looming, Ohtani is arguably playing the best baseball of his career. In a four-game stint against the Texas Rangers earlier this season, the former AL rookie of the year hit four home runs in the series, and in the final game, he struck out three Rangers.
Last year, Ohtani became the first player to finish among MLB’s top 15 in both home runs and pitching strikeouts since the pitching mound was relocated in 1893. If Ohtani manages to eclipse his 2021 MVP season, it will be hard to deny another MVP run at the plate.
If not for the talents of Aaron Judge hitting 62 home runs in the 2022 season, Ohtani would potentially be chasing his third straight AL MVP award right now. He remains one of MLB’s toughest pitchers (with an AL-low batting average against of .178 as of June 20) and was the first player in the AL to hit 20 homers (as of June 20 he had 24).
Off to a historic start, look for Ohtani to continue to put on a show for the fans, as the 2023 MLB season reaches the (symbolic) halfway mark with this year’s MLB All-Star Game, set for Tuesday, July 11. Fans can catch all the action live on Fox and Fox Deportes.
