flexibility for artistic expression.”

Bozeman’s Verge Theater moved out of its home on North Seventh Avenue as a cost-saving measure amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In July, the theater found a new home in the Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture’s Galleria Hall. The space would be a theater by night and a gallery curated by Kelley Sullivan of Rapscallion Gallery by day, meeting the Verge’s directive to find a home that would “encourage

In the last few months, the gallery space has hosted classes and staged readings, but larger productions went to the larger stage in the Emerson’s Crawford Theater. That is changing this week.

For its first full-length production in the new space, the gallery will transform into Middletown, USA, for a production of Will Eno’s “Middletown,” which “explores the joyful and excruciating human experience of being a regular person in an average American town” according to www.vergetheater.com.

“Ultimately, for me it’s been a joy in trying to figure out how we take an 11 by 17 playing space and make it feel alive and natural and organic to the town and we’ve done that,” director Bradford Rosenbloom said.

In Middletown, we glimpse the lives of the residents. We see a friendship developing between townie John Dodge (Alex Miller) and new arrival Mary Swanson (Kyrie Dawson) through windows and seemingly simple interactions.

“This is what life is like, here, right now,” the cop says. “Looking

into people’s windows at night makes you feel lonely. Lonely, but lonely along with the people in the windows. Along with the people in the whole world, the whole lonely billions. It feels sort of holy, in some screwy way. Fact.”

Through its residents, “Middletown” shows off contrasting and complementing ideals, exploring connections through vignettes that hint at a plot, but remain ephemeral. It’s beautiful in its abstraction.

OF ‘THE GOLDBERGS’ ON ABC

What musical artists have inspired you?

Oh man, growing up I listened to a lot of Brian McKnight, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion. Very soulful singers, some big vocalists, some R&B. And then as I got into high school, it was more like singer/songwriters like Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson. And then at the same time, within all of that I also just grew up listening to the radio and what would come on KISS-FM and things like that. So I’ve been influenced by a lot of different kinds of sounds. And being a vocalist, I have fun kind of playing and singing within several different genres, which is why I think it’s been a journey to try to find sort of my sound and how to incorporate all those different

elements into who I’m going to be as an artist.

Do you see a cross pollination between acting and music, where one helps or augments the other?

I think in some ways, yes. Like obviously from what you have to do, they’re very different worlds. You know, I’m coming into acting and they give me a script and they tell me what to wear and I’m taking on the role of something that’s in someone else’s imagination.

Whereas with music, it’s very therapeutic for me and I’m able to tell my stories and my experiences through my songwriting.

Thanksgiving

By now, you’re probably sick of turkey.

Between turkey bacon, sausage, burgers and the rotisserie turkey breasts sold in supermarkets and delis, the big bird has lost its specialness as it’s become a regular staple of our diets. So making it the centerpiece of a Thanksgiving feast seems almost anticlimactic at this point.

So what to do instead? Well, a lot if you give it a little imagination. The following are a few suggestions for alternative Thanksgiving meals that are guaranteed to wow your holiday diners.

Certainly, filet mignon has to be on anyone’s list. In her “Everyday Italian” segment on YouTube (www.youtube. com/watch?vASJk1pmJjAI), Giada De Laurentiis seers her beautifully marbled cuts in butter in a hot pan before

drizzling them with balsamic syrup, then melts goat cheese on top. Not exactly for the calorie conscious but then neither is traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Enjoy just the same.

Of course, ham also has to be on the radar. Ree Drummond shows how to do a glazed ham right in this “Pioneer Woman” video (www.youtube.com/ watch?vASpwAKy_Eog). The secret, she says, is in the glaze, which she makes from orange juice, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, grainy brown mustard, grated garlic, the zest of three oranges and spices, then cooks on medium high until thick. She drizzles it over her spiral cut ham and puts it in the oven. What comes out is a caramelized masterpiece. Yum!

Cinerama displays ‘How the West Was Won’

There aren’t many films so big, they require multiple directors, but “How the West Was Won” is one of them. The 1962 epic – a frequent attraction on Turner Classic Movies, which presents it again Friday, Nov. 25, in tribute to the 70th anniversary of the ultra-widescreen Cinerama process – utilized the talents of filmmakers John Ford, Henry Hathaway and George Marshall for different segments.

With Spencer Tracy as its narrator, the truly sprawling saga boasts an all-star cast in weaving its multiple tales of the Old West ... and stunning sequences in a raft ride down a raging river, and a shootout aboard a moving train. Carroll Baker, Lee J. Cobb, Henry Fonda, Karl Malden, Gregory Peck, Robert Preston, Debbie Reynolds, James Stewart, John Wayne and Richard Widmark are among the familiar faces on hand over the picture’s nearly three-hour run.

“Notting Hill” (Hulu, streaming): Hugh Grant stays in smitten leading man mode in this marvelous 1999 comedy, playing a London bookstore owner stunned to be courting a movie superstar (Julia Roberts) after they meet in his shop. The screenplay by Richard Curtis (“Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love Actually”) takes some amusing shots at show business, especially when Grant’s character poses as a journalist to crash a press junket Roberts is doing.

“The Mechanic” (HDNET Movies, Monday, Nov. 21): Charles Bronson may not have had the widest acting range of any screen star, but what he did, he did quite well ... and he often did it best in the company of action-staple director Michael Winner, as in the original 1972 version of this drama. Bronson is at his most rugged as hit man Arthur Bishop, who makes the acquaintance of Steve (JanMichael Vincent), a callous young man who’s the son of a Bishop connection (Keenan Wynn) ... and who’s also interested in learning the tricks of the killing trade from Bishop.

Staging “Middletown” for the Verge was the brainchild of Rosenbloom, who moved to Bozeman a few years ago to be with mentor Mary Overlie at the end of her life. Overlie, a choreographer, created the idea of the Six Viewpoints for performance. This system invites the performers to interact with the set, the audience and each other through a form of deconstruction. It asks them to consider their interaction with space, shape, time, emotion, movement and story. And in doing so, provides “the promise and knowledge that you are contributing just by being there in the dialogue,” according to www. thesixviewpoints.com.

The production of “Middletown,” Rosenbloom said, pays homage to Overlie and to Bozeman.

“She always wanted high quality beautiful performance to continue to make it into Montana because she always felt that Montanans are special,” Rosenbloom said.

Overlie is featured on stage, in the form of a painting of her dancing, and her philosophy guides much of the production.

“I brought Middletown to Verge with the clear intention that together we would explore what it means to be human, what it feels like to be alive, what are the words coming from our mouths and to intimately articulate the sorrow and sheer joy in love that transcends the human heart,” Rosenbloom stated in a release.

Rosenbloom first encountered “Middletown” as an actor, playing the mechanic in a 2016 production directed by Kevin Coleman of Shakespeare & Company in Massachusetts. Ultimately, he felt the performance was too literal for a play that is all about subtleties, and wanted to take a more observational, metamodern approach.

“Metamodernism is more than just what would be considered, quote, traditional theater,”

Rosenbloom said. “It’s art and culture and philosophy.”

In this way, the Verge production uses its new shared space to its advantage. The art on the walls of what is a gallery by day and theater by night only adds to the atmosphere. Each aspect is thought through, from lighting and sound design by Julie Seitel and KC Luchsinger, to costumes by Overlie’s sister Debbie White and set pieces crafted by artisan maker Evan Wilmes. Percussionist Chris Naro adds atmosphere throughout, and is a character in his own right.

During a four-hour tech rehearsal on Monday, Rosenbloom told the cast that mastery of the technical element, including “hyper intentional” music, set design and lighting, will aid in the actors’ ability to be present and bring parts of themselves to the characters.

“It will allow you to drop the technique and be messy humans,” he said.

“Middletown” is a modern take on Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” which took its own “meta” approach. “Our Town” opened in 1938 and used the theater itself as a setting, and the stage manager as the narrator to tell the stories of everyday citizens in a fictional small town.

The Bozeman production also fulfills one last request from Overlie.

“She said to me, ‘Bradford, do a play where there are no blackouts,’” Rosenbloom said.

In this “Middletown,” the lights never go out completely. The audience sees how an actor can be performing as a character in one moment, moving the set in the next and going back to their character, in a way that Rosenbloom said mimics how we as people morph in and out of roles all the time.

“To think that a scene just changes and lights come up, no that’s not the case,” he said. “There are people, actual people doing it, so that, especially for this play, time doesn’t stop. It keeps revolving.”

Life continues. There are no blackouts.

IF YOU GO...

“Middletown” is at the Verge Theater, Suite 107 in the Emerson Center’s Galleria Hall on Nov. 18, 19 and 20, and Dec. 2, 4, 9, 10 and 11. Performances on Fridays and Saturday are at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $35 at www. vergetheater.com and at the door. The play is suitable for those 17+.

Allen bombs opponents into submission in Buffalo

On a day when America sits down and gives thanks, Buffalo Bills fans have cause to be grateful for their football team and its star quarterback.

Indeed, Josh Allen is at it once again in Western New York, pulling off exploits that at times seem surreal while leading the Bills to the top of the AFC East.

One came in Week 5 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, when less than 90 seconds in he hit wide receiver Gabe Davis on a 98-yard touchdown pass, the longest in Bills history and as well as the longest scrimmage TD in the first 90 seconds of a game in NFL history.

But he was far from done. He’d connect with Davis again on a 62-yard TD pass in the second quarter plus two others to Stefon Diggs and Khalil Shakir before finishing the half with 348 yards and four touchdowns. When he was pulled in the fourth quarter in favor of back-up Case Keenum, his final stats were 20 of 31 for 424 yards with the four TDs and one interception in what turned out to be a 38-3 Buffalo rout. Had he stayed in, he might have threatened Norm Van Brocklin’s single-game record of 554 yards set in 1951.

Through five games, Allen is again among the league’s top passers, topping the list in yards (1,651) and touchdowns (14). More importantly, he has the Bills faithful thinking 2022 is the year a Super Bowl title might be theirs.

Allen and the Bills can be seen in action Thursday, Nov. 24, on CBS, when they visit the Detroit Lions in the first of three Thanksgiving Day NFL contests. FULL NAME: Joshua Patrick Allen
