Story of the American soldier
BY RACHEL HERGETT FOR THE CHRONICLEIntermountain Opera Bozeman’s latest production tells the story of the American soldier — the mother, the husband, the daughter, son, brother, sister, friend. Each is intertwined in the narrative of “The Falling and the Rising.”
The new American opera by Zach Redler and Jerre Dye was commissioned by the U.S. Army Field Band & Soldiers’ Chorus and is based on a series of interviews with returning soldiers at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, The Old Guard at Fort Myer, and Fort Meade, Maryland.
“The story of ‘The Falling and the Rising’ is all about this soldier’s experience coming home from combat,” said Joe Schumacher, a chorus member and director of Veteran Services at Montana State University, which has helped fund free tickets
for veterans and service members. “Through the medium of music and opera, it offers the opportunity to come together as a community and maybe have a little bit of healing.”
“The Falling and the Rising” showcases everything stage director Ned Canty loves about opera.
“It wears its emotions on its sleeve in all the best ways,” he said during a pre-rehearsal talk with community members on Monday night.
Canty explained that the heart of opera is the emotion it is able to invoke.
“Before we had titles and translations on screen, opera could still succeed,” Canty said. “The emotions were so pure, they went right to your hippocampus or your animal brain and made you feel things. This opera does that in very, very unapologetic ways at a time when a lot of our popular culture is filtered through seven layers of irony.”

“Movie: Desperado”
Antonio Banderas makes his debut as an action hero in this 1995 Western from director Robert Rodriguez. A sequel to “El Mariachi,” the film follows a guitar-toting gunman as he sets his sights on a drug lord. Cheech Marin provides a few laughs in his bit role as a bartender; Salma Hayek also stars.
“Movie: Casino” Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese yielded another memorable collaboration with this 1995 drama of racketeering in Las Vegas. The actor plays a gambling-den operator who has to ward off those who would oust him, with the love of his life (Sharon Stone) a definite liability to him. Joe Pesci, who worked previously with De Niro and Scorsese on “GoodFellas,” co-stars.
“Movie: You’ve Got Mail”
1940’s “The Shop Around the Corner” is updated for the digital age in this 1998 romantic comedy. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan (“Sleepless in Seattle”) star as business rivals having an online romance, not knowing that the objects of their respective affections are ... each other. Parker Posey, Greg Kinnear and Jean Stapleton also star.
“Movie: The Way, Way Back” Writer/directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash earned critical kudos for this 2013 comedy-drama centering around a youngster (Liam James) who feels out of place while vacationing on the Massachusetts shore with his mother and her boyfriend (Toni Collette, Steve Carell). He finds a kindred spirit in the manager (Sam Rockwell) of a nearby water park. Allison Janney and AnnaSophia Robb also star.

BY GEORGE DICKIE‘REHAB ADDICT LAKE HOUSE RESCUE’ ON HGTV
You have a long history with this house, admiring it for years before buying it eight years ago, correct?
Yeah, it’s a little hometown of mine, (which) was a resort per se for people from Detroit, so you used to take a train out. So all the houses were just these little, tiny ramshackle cottages that had no insulation, no indoor plumbing or anything. So the island that this particular cottage is on at one time had this grand hotel and you had to take a canoe over to get to your house because there were no roads, so it was very romantic. And then obviously over the years, it actually became a town and with the suburban flight everyone moved out there and they tore down all the old cottages. So there’s only maybe a dozen
of the original cottages left and this was one of them. So when it came up for sale I didn’t necessarily need it but I knew that if I didn’t take it that somebody would tear it down, and it was just so magical to me.
What did this house need?
Well this one, as I said it was built in – it’s deeded 1904 but we believe it was built more around 1890. But it was simply a cottage. It had been updated over the years but basically they took the original cottage, built a little exterior bathroom on it. It was on a crawl space so when we got it, there was no plumbing that was working, there was no electrical that was working and the crawl space, the foundation, was actually crumbling so the house was kind of leaning over.

BY GEORGE DICKIEDuff Goldman turns thespian in discovery+’s ‘A Gingerbread Christmas’
Duff Goldman is not only an “Ace of Cakes,” but it turns out he’s a good guy to have around in a pinch, too.
That was never more apparent than during the filming of the discovery+ telepic “A Gingerbread Christmas” this past spring in Montreal, when a repair was needed to a gingerbread house after a camera person had bumped into it and Goldman came to the rescue.
“It was late, it was already midnight,” he recalls. “The artist who made all (the gingerbread houses) was already gone and so they’re like, ‘Oh my God! What are we going to do?’ And I was like, ‘We’re in a hotel, right?’ And they were like, ‘Yeah.’ And I was like, ‘You guys, just get me some egg whites and some powdered sugar
and some parchment paper and I can fix it.’
“And so, I actually had to make royal icing and fix one of the gingerbread houses in between takes ... . You know, it actually was nice because all the actors were like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s what you do. OK, cool.’ ”
In the movie, which begins streaming Friday, Nov. 11, Goldman has a co-starring role as Mark Clemmons, a food celebrity and judge presiding over a gingerbread house competition that is the backdrop for potential romance between a contestant (Tiya Sircar, “The Good Place”), a New York architect helping out at her dad’s failing bakery, and a local contractor (Marc Bendavid, “Good Witch”) helping to spruce up the place.

‘The Dirty Dozen’ strikes again for Veterans Day
As many war stories as there have been, “The Dirty Dozen” – which Turner Classic Movies presents for Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 11 – is rather unique in its tale of 12 convicts given a chance at amnesty if they complete what amounts to a suicide mission. Lee Marvin is ideal as the major who stays tough while keeping the parolees in line as they train to invade a French chateau.
It’s quite a group, from a rebellious smart aleck (John Cassavetes) to an outright sadist (Telly Savalas) ... and the Robert Aldrich-directed 1967 hit gave a boost to then-supporting actor Donald Sutherland when he inherited a scene another actor declined. Additional TCM attractions for Veterans Day include “Sergeant York,” “Where Eagles Dare,” “The Best Years of Our Lives” and “The Longest Day.”

“The Fugitive” (Decades, Monday, Nov. 7): You’ll have to get up very early (or stay up very late) to see it, but this drama’s two-part conclusion – “The Judgment” – stands as one of the highest-rated series episodes ever shown. David Janssen’s wrongly accused Dr. Richard Kimble catches up to his wife’s actual killer, a one-armed man (Bill Raisch), with police lieutenant Gerard (Barry Morse) in typically hot pursuit. The result is still as suspenseful as it originally was in 1967.
“The Carol Burnett Show” (MeTV, Monday, Nov. 7): An episode from very early in the comedyvariety series’ run teams two of the all-time great ladies of television humor, since Lucille Ball is the principal guest. She famously was a mentor to Burnett when the latter began her TV stardom, and the true affection between the icons is easy to see. Also among the guests is Tim Conway, who was destined to become a regular cast member on this show later.

The opera opens with The Soldier (soprano Tess Altiveros) recording a video message for her daughter, who is about to turn 13. The Soldier will be on patrol all day and won’t be able to talk to her daughter directly, we learn through the libretto.
“The point of the scene is to underscore the sacrifices our military and their families make,” Doug Badenoch, the opera’s board president, stated in an email.
The Soldier is breaking a promise, exchanging one duty for another.
“I signed up. I made this choice. I took a vow.
And here I am. And here we are.
If I could leave right now I would.
Hero is a tricky word,” she sings.
The Soldier promises to be home soon. Instead, an improvised explosive device leaves her with a traumatic brain injury. As The Soldier is placed in a medically induced coma, “The Falling and the Rising” journeys into her dreams. Here she meets Toledo (Cristina María Castro), another female soldier in the midst of an army counseling session. Toledo speaks of sacrifice, of the family bonds created with fellow service members, of having an entire army at your back and being willing to die for them.
Other visions appear. An Army Ranger (Lukas Graf) instructs her to pack her parachute and prepare to jump from the heavens. A colonel (Hector Vàsquez) mourns the loss of his wife. A wounded soldier (Yazid Gray) comes home and testifies about healing before his church congregation.
Musically, the opera incorporates elements of styles from gospel to rock ‘n’ roll.
“The creators knew that there were going to be a lot of first
time opera-goers to ‘The Falling and the Rising,’ especially because a lot of their audience was in the military,” said
conductor Michael Sakir. “It’s very melodic. Very approachable. There are a lot of tunes you’ll be whistling on your way out.”
In the last act, principal performers are joined on stage by 15 local veterans and service members, who form a soldiers’

Yes, Henry Winkler, the now-76year-old actor famous for playing leather-jacketed biker Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli in the classic sitcom “Happy Days,” is so blown away by the consistent greatness of the Kansas City Chiefs’ future Hall of Fame quarterback that when he appeared on The Roku Channel’s “The Rich Eisen Show” back in June, he invited Mahomes to dinner at his house.
“We make a great chicken stuffed with ricotta and spinach with an unbelievable reduction,” Winkler said on the show to Eisen’s laughter. “It can be yours if you’re here in L.A.”
Mahomes accepted the offer and even reciprocated by inviting Winkler to a luxury suite at SoFi Stadium when the Chiefs visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Nov. 30. No word yet on what Mahomes will bring to Winkler’s house for dessert.
Through four games in 2022, Mahomes is once again among the NFL’s elite passers, completing 97 of 146 passes for 1,106 yards (sixth in the league), 11 touchdowns (tied for first), two interceptions and a quarterback rating of 108.4. More importantly, he has the Chiefs off to a fast start with a 3-1 record, good enough for first place in the AFC West as well as the admiration of Henry Winkler.
Mahomes and the Chiefs can be seen in action Sunday, Nov. 6, when they host the Tennessee Titans in a game airing on NBC.
