Film combines stories into compelling drama
By RACHEL HERGETT FOR THE CHRONICLEWhile not autobiographical, “The Year of the Dog” draws pieces of story directly from Bozeman filmmaker Rob Grabow’s life.
His character, Matt, has buried much of the pain of his father’s death at the bottom of a bottle. He’s going through the world alone, lashing out at those who try to get too close, who might make him feel something. His mother has refused to see him until he has gone 30 days without drinking. And
it has now been 15 years. But with his mother in hospice care, now is Matt’s last chance.
“I’ll stay sober for 30 days so that I can see my mom before she dies,” Matt, fresh from jail, tells his Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor. The sponsor, Fred (Bozeman actor Michael Spears, “Reservation Dogs,” “Dances with Wolves”), offers Matt a cabin on his property — a place to stay away from temptation.
Grabow is a Bozeman filmmaker who wrote, produced and co-directed “The Year of the Dog,” which is in a limited pre-release around Montana before it officially premieres at the
Chelsea Film Festival. Grabow is not an alcoholic. That piece of the story comes from those around him in the years his mother spent as a drug and alcohol counselor.
In one scene, Fred tries to warn Matt away from keeping a husky mix he found on the property. To do it, Fred tells the story of a man who was triggered by simply being asked to help in the garden. He walked out of the garden, straight across a river that was up to his neck and took a bus for an hour simply to have a drink.

BY GEORGE DICKIE‘Easy-Bake Battle’ champions quick and easy cuisine
Let’s just get this out of the way up front.
There were no light bulbs used to cook the comestibles on Netflix’s “Easy-Bake Battle” nor does the venerable Hasbro toy appliance make an appearance – at least not in the form that we know it.
No, the title of the culinary competition series that begins streaming its eight half hour episodes on Wednesday, Oct. 12, refers to, as the show’s release explains, cuisine “inspired by Hasbro’s iconic Easy-Bake Oven.” Translation: simple, easy, delicious meals one can make in little time and with a little outside-the-box thinking.
So expect to pick up plenty of clever kitchen hacks or shortcuts from accomplished home cooks as they vie in two rounds of competition for the chance to win $25,000 in each episode and the
$100,000 grand prize at the end of the season.
The series comes from eOne, the production company owned by Hasbro, and features a whole lot of baking – and not the type of baking one might think.
“I don’t mean like cake baking,” explains executive producer Daniel Calin. “This show does both savory and sweet cooking, which I think differentiates it from a lot of the other shows you’ll see on platform and elsewhere. But in the second round, the oven that they use to bake very cleverly in, it aesthetically represents the classic Easy-Bake Oven; it’ll be reminiscent of it.”
So there is a wall oven in the shape of the Easy-Bake Oven here. It has no special capabilities and again, no light bulbs, just an average oven in which contestants will cook their pasta, steak, seafood and dessert dishes, which are
then judged by host Antoni Porowski and rotating guest judges including Kristen Kish and Jacques Torres.
And that’s where the hacks come in. If nothing else, viewers will come away with a few shortcuts and tricks that surely will make their time in the kitchen easier and more productive, just as it did for the home cooks here.
“There’s a whole world of people on YouTube and TikTok and Instagram who had started championing like an easy way of cooking that is like hack-driven and still gets you to delicious meals,” Calin says.
“These folks are like really busy people like you and I who have complicated lives and kids and a lot of demands coming their way. So in the kitchen they’ve had to figure out how to cook more efficiently without compromising the quality of their food, so they come to the competition with their shortcuts.”

‘Philadelphia’ meant much to Tom Hanks
In 1993, some subjects still hadn’t gotten widely into the mainstream of major-studio movies ... one of the reasons “Philadelphia,” now streaming on Hulu, was such a milestone. Director Jonathan Demme’s drama also marked a career breakthrough for Tom Hanks, who largely had done lighter fare before taking the role of an AIDS-afflicted attorney who sues his former firm, believing his firing to be linked to his homosexuality.
Hanks earned the first of two consecutive Oscars for his work here (the second being for “Forrest Gump”). Denzel Washington also is excellent as another lawyer who changes from opponent to ally in taking the Hanks character’s case, which he turns down initially. Other superb cast members include Joanne Woodward as Hanks’ mother, Antonio Banderas as his partner and Jason Robards as the law-firm chief.

“The Addams Family” (MeTV, Sunday, Oct. 9): You’d have to figure Halloween would have a deeper meaning to this clan than most others, and a marathon of episodes from the 1960s sitcom inspired by Charles Addams’ cartoons proves that to be the fact. As an example, after a neighbor tells young Wednesday (Lisa Loring) that witches don’t exist, Morticia and Grandmama (Carolyn Jones and Blossom Rock, aka Marie Blake) both set out to prove otherwise.

While only a story on film, this is a scene that plays in Grabow’s head. He remembers looking out the window and watching a man do exactly that.
Despite Fred’s warnings, in “The Year of the Dog,” the husky gets to stay. He is jokingly named “You Pick,” which eventually becomes “Yup’ik,” one of the tribes indigine ous to the area around Holy Cross, Alaska, where Grabow spent part of his youth. In training for a dog-sled ding-adjacent event where dogs try to pull the most weight, building a relationship with Yup’ik helps Matt open up to those around him and overcome some of his demons.
For viewers, “The Year of the Dog,” may hit close to home not just because it was filmed in familiar locations around Bozeman and Livingston, but because it directly speaks to overcoming that inner turmoil.
Grabow called the film “a heart-warming journey of for giveness, finding purpose, being vulnerable, making connections,
and ultimately healing,” in a release. Over the phone, he says art can provide valuable reminders of our own journeys.
Before his father dies, a young Matt is begrudgingly helping him rebuild a porch. They finish, and his father, played by Aaron Finley
(a New York actor who grew up in Bozeman), is called in to work. But before he leaves, he reminds his son “we don’t leave things broken.”
“That’s kind of the thesis of the film,” Grabow said. “If we make mistakes or we don’t hit it quite right, there is always a chance to
keep doing it and eventually we will find our way through.”
Grabow’s life was filled with other struggles. He tells of his young childhood in a mostly Indigenous village in rural Alaska, where his single mother was a teacher. When he broke his pelvis sledding at age 6 and had to spend a month in the hospital, hundreds of miles from home, he was left alone. And when he watched something scary on TV and tried to call collect, his mother couldn’t afford to answer.
But when he speaks of his life, Grabow also speaks of community and of the lessons he learned. He speaks of his mother’s best friend, a petite Aleute woman who always stood up for him. Or how the three boys who beat him up on his first day in the village because he was white became his best friends. Grabow said his mother used the incident as a lesson, telling him to remember the moment because for most of his life, he will be in the majority.
These people and others appear in stories peppered throughout “The Year of the Dog,” told by attendees at Alcoholics Anonymous
meetings or in guidance from Matt’s sponsor. Some are reflections, others direct retellings. But for Grabow, each is deserving of respect.
“In making any kind of art of trying to tell stories that are about people that matter to you and our lives, you want to do them justice,” Grabow said.
But did he succeed?
“I don’t know if I’m ultimately the one who gets to decide that,” Grabow said. “It’s determined by how people receive it and how they relate to the film. I did the best I could to tell a story that was informed by my own life. I’m so proud of so many aspects of the film.”
“The Year of the Dog” is screening at Empire Twin Cinemas in Livingston until Oct. 13, as part of a special run of previews across Montana and Idaho hosted by the Polson-based film distribution company Nova Vento Entertainment and the film’s Montana-based producers. It premieres on Oct. 15 at the Chelsea Film Festival in New York City. For more information visit https://www.theyearofthedog movie.com/screenings.
Healthy again, Saquon Barkley spearheads Giants’ attack
It’s been three seasons since Saquon Barkley last played with confidence. And if his Week 1 showing is any indication, it’s well justified.
Indeed, the New York Giants’ star running back had a tough row to hoe in 2020 and 2021 after bursting onto the NFL scene in 2018 with a franchise rookie record 1,307 yards in 2018 and following that up with a 1,003-yard season in 2019.
But in Week 2 of 2020, the Giants’ 2018 first round pick out of Penn State grabbed the back of his knee after being hauled down on a running play and was immediately carted off the field. The diagnosis – a torn ACL, the type of injury no runner wants.
He missed the remainder of that year and returned in 2021 a mere shell of himself. Not confident in the repaired knee and also hampered by an ankle injury, Barkley ran for only 563 yards in 13 games before being placed in the NFL’s COVID-19 protocol.
But in training camp of 2022, he showed up a different player. He ran hard and with confidence, thus catching the attention of his teammates and coaches. So when he ran for 164 yards and a touchdown, and caught six passes for 30 yards in the G-Men’s 21-20 comeback win over the Titans in the season opener, no one around the team was surprised.
“He ran hard like he has all camp,” Giants head coach Brian Daboll said.
“He brought it straight to the game field,” added wide receiver Sterling Shepard. “I’m happy and so proud of him because he’s been working his a... off.”
Certainly he’s a key part of the New York attack and that will be on display the morning of Sunday, Oct. 9, when Barkley and the Giants clash with the Green Bay Packers at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a game airing on NFL Network.
