A
n all original psychedelic-horror-rock musical, using life-sized puppets, written by Ryan Cassavaugh (book and lyrics) and Joe Knapp (music), “Freak Out” tells the story of two counter-culture bikers in the late 1960s on a voyage to discover the real America, who find themselves embroiled with a devilish cult trying to take over the world! Joe, Sadie, and I sincerely want to thank everyone who voted for “Freak Out: The Musical.” It has been, by far, the most artistically rewarding
venture of my life. When I first came up with the story idea for a 1960s rock-and-roll horror musical for our life-sized puppets, I knew it was an undertaking almost too big for us to handle; I had a choice between putting the idea aside or enlisting the help of all the people I knew who could make this project come to life and, thankfully, I chose the latter. First was to make sure my wife, Sadie Cassavaugh, was even willing to direct the show and oversee the construction of the fleet of new

puppets we would need to design and build. She would be the brains and vision; it could not be done with out her. Next, I knew I had to get Joe Knapp on board for music; no one else I could think of would be able to create the kind of 60s stylized rock-and-roll sound needed for the project. Joe and I spent many hours going over the lyrics, discussing what kind of musical style we wanted for each piece, and then trying different arrangements and tunes until we hit on just what the show required. We had an unbelievable band

(Joe Knapp, Garrett Robinson, Dan Haywood, and myself) who worked 2-3 nights a week for months working out the arrangements and practicing the songs until they were second nature. In another stroke of serendipitous luck, we managed to get every actor and musician we wanted for the parts on board. It was a large, unwieldy, and incredibly weird concept for a play; it needed people who could comprehend its strangeness and throw themselves into it head first. It’s not just about a willingness to perform the parts, but an understanding of what was needed to make the parts work for the show. The cast (Ryan Lawrence Flynn, Pol Llovet, Steven Harris-Weiel, Ty Gardner, Sadie Cassavaugh, Wren Garverick, Leandra Hill, Leyla Osman-Kirschner, and Harry Jahnke with Harry Schwem, Jesse Matthews, Kyle Sporenson) designed and built the puppets, built the set and props, and worked tirelessly in vocal rehearsals, band rehearsals, dance rehearsals, theater rehearsals, and studio time to record the soundtrack. We enlisted the help of artists Jade Lowder and the ever-fantastic Marla Goodman to help paint and build set pieces and props, Matt Cameron to design the logo and poster, Stephanie Peterson for choreography help, Ryan Schmitt, Brian Ripple and David Green for lights and sound. They all went above what was asked of them. Everyone at the Verge Theater stood behind a completely unknown project and said “go ahead and give it a try.” No matter how weird the project got, they trusted in our ideas, and for that we are eternally grateful. Everyone involved spent countless hours working and shaping the show, despite not being sure anyone would want to see it. Luckily, and quite surprisingly for us, people did, and what’s more - they liked it! Sometimes taking a big chance pays off. We can not thank you enough, Bozeman; you are awesome! We are beyond excited to remount the show in May at the gorgeous Rialto Theater with bigger sound and a more visually complex light show. We hope to see everyone there! f

Bozeman’s Choice

ozemanites are lucky to experience a combination hard to come by: a diverse food scene thriving in a small country town. Over the last decade, Bozeman has experienced a significant influx of out-of-state money; and while some argue it has stressed Bozeman’s small-town infrastructure, this influx has undoubtedly influenced the abundance and quality of eating, drinking, and cultural establishments for a town of Bozeman’s size. While the delicious staples of traditional western food are available in and around Bozeman, there has been an emerging food scene creating new venues that showcase entrepreneurs and chefs whose visions and skills are creating trends in Bozeman and beyond. This increasingly diverse (and exceptional) food scene is catching the attention of food lovers like myself. There are also restaurants that have established a name for themselves and are Bozeman staples, so much so that many people travel back to these places woven into the fabric of Bozeman. From casual to fine dining, from pizza to Asian cuisine, you can find many culinary options.
It’s that time of the year, and Bozeman has spoken. Can we have a drumroll please? Here is the moment we’ve all been waiting for, Bozeman’s Choice Restaurant goes to…
#1 Dave’s Sushi If you are looking for THE place for some fresh and outstanding sushi, then head on over to Dave’s Sushi. This obviously holds true as Dave’s Sushi has been voted Bozeman’s Choice Restaurant for three consecutive years...what an honor! This restaurant is Bozeman’s favorite laid-back sushi restaurant, with a friendly atmosphere and “hang-loose” Hawaiian vibe. There is guaranteed to be something tasty for anyone and everyone; appetizers, salads, noodles, sashimi, nigiri, temaki, specialty rolls (with fun and unique names), and some sweets. Dave’s Sushi has a frequently rotating variety of beer, wine and saki to keep your palates wet. Located off of Main at 115 N. Bozeman Ave, hours are Sunday-Thursday 11:00am9:30pm and Friday-Saturday 11:00am-10:00pm.

CHOMPING & CHUGGING #2 Montana Ale Works
Sure to be an eye-catcher for anyone visiting from out of town is the number two spot, Montana Ale Works, boasting a railroad freight house as part of its building. Here you can enjoy upscale comfort food featuring locally sourced produce, meats and cheeses. They proudly serve local and natural Montana beef and bison burgers, as well as steaks, salads, sandwiches, and many gluten-free options. Ale Works also supports the creativity of its chefs by offering an array of nightly chef specials and a great happy hour with seasonal small plates. Speaking of happy hour, Montana Ale Works offers an extensive selection of beers that includes 40 tap handles and weekly rotators. Open daily at 4pm, you will experience an energetic atmosphere, complete with exceptional service and hospitality.
#3 Seven
Coming in hot is Seven with the number three spot. Offering sustainably harvested fish, Seven focuses on authentic Japanese sushi. You can also choose from a variety of Japanese fusion appetizers and entrées. The entrées offer a little something for those of you who aren’t quite on the sushi train yet, so don’t let the sushi deter you from choosing Seven as a lunch or dinner spot! Seven offers a wide variety of beer, wine and saki and a rotating kombucha from its neighbor, Dean’s Zesty Booch. Seven is located in the historic Cannery District, which gives this restaurant a modern but casual feel. The hours are Monday – Saturday 11:30am to 10:00pm and Sunday - 4:00pm to 10:00pm
#4 Copper Whiskey Bar and Grill
If whiskey is your thing, definitely make a stop at Copper Whiskey Bar and Grill. They stock an amazing selection of 125 whiskeys, specialty crafted cocktails and a delicious American Grill-themed menu. Some of the menu items include premium Montana beef steaks, juicy burgers (they even have bacon ground into the beef!), fresh unique salads, southern inspired entrees, and “the best gouda Mac and Cheese in the northwest.” Copper has a very cozy ambience from the moment you walk downstairs and are greeted by the host. They are open Monday – Sunday 4pm - 2am.
#5 Backcountry Burger Bar, Blackbird, Cafe Fresco and Sweet Chili
Last but not least, we have four restaurants tied for the fifth place spot: Backcountry Burger Bar (3B), Blackbird Italian, Café Fresco and Sweet Chili. Whether you are looking for a locally sourced burger and fries, wood-fired pizza, handmade pastas, or an authentic Asian entrée, none of these locations will disappoint. If you have not visited any of these restaurants, I highly suggest giving each of them a try! Or, if you voted for any of the above, continue enjoying your favorite dining spot! I am constantly excited and inspired by the endless possibilities of dining experiences offered here. This is why I love my home, and why I am proud to make a name for myself here in Bozeman. The strong focus on food and art, partnered with sustainability and locality, is essential to Bozeman and its people. As Bozeman’s growing food culture clearly demonstrates, Bozemanites love their food!

Yellowstone National Park is Bozeman’s Choice Place to Impress Out-of-town Guests Grand Prismatic Spring
The Grand Prismatic Spring located in the Midway Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park is the largest hot spring in the United States, and the third largest in the world. The giant spring was noted by geologists working in the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871, and named by them for its striking coloration. Its colors match the rainbow dispersion of white light by an optical prism: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue.

MEDIA & INFO
January 2018 Aries: There are four planets getting together in Capricorn around the 8th or 9th. Not known for creating that perfect love at first sight, Capricorn could be bringing single Aries a true love. Watch out for an unexpected financial issue on the 13th.
Libra: Surprise! Mercury and Uranus are sure to come up with something you do not expect on the 6th. Just because it is unexpected, does not mean that it is all bad for you. You might just run in to someone unexpected, if you do, it is worth it to clear the entire day.
Taurus: You have five planets in your ninth house this month bringing long distant ones that you love and those far-off places you want to visit. This may just be the right time to take that trip to visit someone you have been missing!
Scorpio: From the Full Moon on the 1st to the Lunar Eclipse on the 31st, you will be feeling the power of the Moon far more than usual. Early in the month, the Full Moon in Cancer will bring emotions to the surface. Be gentle with yourself and others on the Eclipse.
Gemini: Uranus will be squaring off with both Venus and the Sun on the 13th and 14th, so be prepared for plays to go awry! Abrupt changes are in the offing. Having a plan B ready is probably going to be your best idea. Being flexible will help. Cancer: You are sure to be the center of flirtatious attention all month, but it may just be time for you to make that decision and settle down to commit. Love is definitely in the air. Your special someone may very well bring up the subject before you do! Leo: It is all about getting away for you this month. After the busyness of the holidays a few days of rest and relaxation will fit the bill. With Aquarius being visited by Mercury, Neptune and the Sun, some new adventures and fun are sure to be just what you needed. Virgo: Planetary alignments do not leave much time for you to be out partying. However, they do allow you to be able to make headway on a special project or assignment that will garner positive attention. You may need to postpone a planned getaway.
Sagittarius: The best laid plans for the 6th and 7th are sure to go astray, so make sure to have a plan B ready to go when needed – it is probably going to be. A new romantic interest could show themselves worthy around the 13th or 14th, believe what you see. Capricorn: By the middle of the month, your curiosity is going to be at its highest levels. Jupiter in Scorpio, interacting with Pluto is going to have you ready for doing some serious detective work. It is time for research and understanding, so start digging! Aquarius: Romance blossoms, grows or matures under Venus’ influence in Neptune…a romantic planet in a romantic sign is sure to have you see hearts! Take that get away break from it all on the weekend of the 19th. Try not to hold a grudge on the 24th. Pisces: It is all about the Moon or you this month. The Full Moon in Cancer will have you appreciating the comforts of home after the holiday hustle and bustle. On the 31st, the Lunar Eclipse may show you it is time to readjust your work schedule. Take a break!
