WHY THE “VANDALS”? One of the most unique handles in sports, “Vandals” has been the nickname for University of Idaho athletic teams for more than 80 years. Area sportswriters coined the name as they tried to describe the tenacity with which coach Hec Edmundson’s basketball teams played defense. It first was used in 1918 strictly for the men’s basketball team and officially adopted for all teams in 1921. The sports editor of the school newspaper, Lloyd “Jazz” McCarty, along with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Edward Maslin Hulme, made the final push for the nickname to be adopted, both as a tribute to the intensity of the athletic teams and to the Norsemen of old.

One of the advantages of starting a swimming and diving program at the University of Idaho was the school’s swimming facilities received instant upgrades. Since the program was reinstated in 2004, the university has spent nearly $2.2 million renovating the University of Idaho Swim and Dive Center. The Center features two 25-yard pools. A four-lane shallow pool on the west end serves as an ideal warm-up pool and is used for community swimming lessons and university swimming courses. An eight-lane all-deep water pool is directly to the side of the shallow one. The pool is all deep water and sits below the seating gallery. The pool is the team’s primary practice and competition pool and accommodates both swimming and diving events at home meets. In addition to the pool complex, the Vandals have a dryland training center for their divers and their locker room has been completely remodeled. The Center’s air and water filtration systems received g massive upgrades prior to the team’s first season. The starting blocks were replaced during that renovation and in 2008, two diving boards were added to accommodate the team’s new diving program. The locker rooms were renovated in 2009. The Vandals aren’t the only ones to enjoy the Center’s recent upgrades. The pool accomm-odates 1,200 users a week, including university students and employees and Moscow community members.

Mark Sowa, formerly the head coach of the swimming and diving program at Wagner University, was hired as the eighth head coach in Vandal swimming history. Sowa is the second swim coach since the program was reinstated in 2004 after 22 years of dormancy. "Rob Spear has done a tremendous job revitalizing this program and revitalizing this athletic department, and I'm excited to be a part of it," Sowa said. "They're committed to excellence at the University of Idaho and I can't wait to be a part of that and lead that excellence forward." Sowa’s coaching debut did not dissapoint. In Sowa’s first year as a Vandal, the team broke 12 school records, won three meets and were ranked as high as 25th in the country among mid-major programs. They claimed seventh place in the University of Houston Cougar Classic and were named to the Scholar All America Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. In addition, swimmer Rachel Millet won three WAC Swimmer of the Week awards and diver Paige Hunt won two WAC Diver of the Week awards. This season was not the first time Sowa oversaw immediate succes at a college program. Sowa led the Wagner program to many milestones in his three seasons as the head coach. Sowa's swimmers set 23 school records, two conference records, earned 12 All-NEC honors and the program's first NEC Swimmer of the Year award. Sowa also coached the program's first NCAA provisional qualifier. "We're excited to have Mark because he understands what it takes to create the premier student-athlete experience that we're known for at Idaho," Spear said. "He has built champions and he has produced leaders, and that's what we expect out of all of our coaches. Mark has an excellent track record of doing just that." Wagner owned a combined 15-15 overall record and went 10-4 in the Northeast Conference under Sowa, finishing in the top three in the NEC Championship meet all three seasons, including a second-place finish in 2008-09. Sowa's student-athletes excelled outside of the pool as well, as his swimmers combined for 37 NEC All-Academic honors in his three years. Before taking over at Wagner, Sowa spent the previous 10 years building his coaching resume. From 2007-08 he was the assistant men's swim coach at Harvard University. Before that he was the coach at the Barracuda Swim Club in Nassau, Bahamas from 2005-07 where he won the Bahamas National Swimming Championship. Sowa was the assistant then interim head coach at Maryland from 2004-05 after stints as an assistant at Richmond and Brown University from 1999-2004. Sowa graduated from The American University with his bachelor's degree in History and Philosophy before earning his master's degree from Brown in American History.

SWIMMING AND DIVING HISTORY • LEGENDS

When the Vandal Athletics Athl hle etics Hall of Fame opened in 2007 2007, 07 7, Idaho swimming i i and d di diving i was wellll represented as Idaho greats Nancy Westermeyer Monroe and Nancy Bechtholdt Koch were among the charter members. Together, Wesermeyer Monoe and Bechtholdt Koch set the standard for all future Vandals swimmers.

Nancy Westernmeyer Monroe w was a four-time AIAW national q qualifi er for the Idaho women’s s swimming and diving team from 1 1971-75. She was the first fourt ti time AIAW qualifier in Idaho wome en’s swimming history. She specialized in the frees style and butterfly events and left the school holding team records in both. It was the success of Monroe and her early teammates that helped put Idaho on the map in women’s swimming in the Northwest and the nation and led to Idaho serving as host to the AIAW National Meet in 1973. She was chosen the Vandals’ Most Inspirational Swimmer for four successive seasons – 197275, and was the Most Outstanding Swimmer in 1972, 1974 and 1975. She was in the first class of female student-athletes at the University of Idaho. She earned her first scholarship in 1972. The total award – $175. The student-athletes were encouraged to compete in more than one sport so she added volleyball to her repertoire.

VANDALS 2011-12

Nancy Bechtholdt Koch swam for the Vandals from 1979-1982. Koch not only qualified for nationals four times, she brought home eight individual national championships and set several national records. She was a 24-time All-American, Idaho’s Female Athlete of the Year for the 1979 season and still holds three Idaho school records. Her 500-yard freestyle record is nearly eight seconds better than the school’s next best. Her 1,000-yard freestyle time is three seconds faster than anyone else has swam at Idaho and her 1,650-yard freestyle school record is nearly 20 seconds fasterr than any other Vandal’s effort. Koch still holds all-time top-10 times in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle. Behind Koch, Idaho finished fifth in 1981 at nationals and seventh in 1982. Koch led the way for the school’s highest national team finish byy winning the 100- and 200-yard freestyle, placing second in the 500yard freestyle and third in the 1,650yard freestyle. She was on the 800yard freestyle relay team that placed second and 400-yard medley relayy team that finished fourth. Koch won her fourth 200yard freestyle title at the 1982 championship. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS DR. ROB SPEAR

University of Great Falls (BS) University of Montanan (MBA) University of Idaho (PhD)

VANDALS 2011-12

Rob Spear assumed the lead of the University of Idaho athhletic department during a crucial juncture in its storied history. y. The Vandals were seeking solidification of their conference e status and their facilities were in need of modernization. Theyy needed a leader with vision and passion. Spear fit the bill. First was securing a home in the Western Athletic Conferrence, a league that preserves historic rivalries and offers the e benefits of a Division I association. Next was rebuilding the e Vandals’ home. He was on hand to oversee the final stagess of the construction of the Iverson Speed and Strength Center. r. Next were the playing surfaces – inside and out. The Vandalss now have a SprinTurf practice facility outdoors and RealGrasss Pro inside the Kibbie Dome. The football, men’s and women’ss basketball, and swimming locker rooms were renovated into o modern, stylish facilities for the student-athletes. Last fall, the athletic training and equipment rooms were renovated classrooms and d and d state-of-the-art f h l d meeting i rooms came on line as part of a multi-million dollar facelift for the Kibbie Dome. Last fall, the first phase of a new-look Kibbie Dome debuted when the plywood on the west end wall was replaced with translucent panels. When the Vandals kickoff in 2011, not only will the east wall match the west but there will be a new club area with suites, loge boxes and a clubroom as well as premium seating and a new press box. Facilities are but one area where Spear has moved the department forward. He added to the support services staff to enhance the student-athlete experience. Computer labs and academic support staff are cornerstones of a successful department and the additions and upgrades in those areas are paying dividends. In the fall of 2007, the Idaho Athletics Hall of Fame was established with 100 individuals and five teams being inducted over a two-year period as part of the inaugural class. His involvement isn’t limited to the Idaho campus. He began a second term with the NCAA’s ‘Legislative Council – one of two top-tier governing bodies in the organization. “I am honored and excited to represent the Western Athletic Conference on this governing board,” Spear said at the time of his appointment. “It is a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on future NCAA legislation to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to the student-athlete.” Spear’s ties with athletics are life-long. He was a standout high school athlete in his native Butte, Mont., before moving on to letter four times at the University of Great Falls. Next was a two-year professional basketball career with the Montana Golden Nuggets, at the time coached by George Karl. Go He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Great Falls in 1980 and his MBA from the University of Montan tana in 1983. He accepted a position as an internal auditor with the University of Idaho in 1989. While working at Idaho, he also pur pursued his doctorate in education, which he completed in 1993. Prior to his appointment as director of athletics in 2003, Spear was the interim assistant financial vice president. He also spent tim time at Idaho as the Assistant Vice President for Outreach in the Col College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and in grants contracts. He and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Morgan – a junior at IIdaho.

A LEGACY OF LEADING

The University of Idaho opened its doors on Oct. 3, 1892, when it welcomed about 40 students and one 18 professor, p r John Edwin Ostrander. On June 11, 1896, the university graduated its first cclass la when four students marched across a stage to re receive their diplomas. Two years later, the university aw awarded its first graduate degree. By 1899, a growing bo body of University of Idaho alumni formed the Idaho Al Alumni Association. Alumni numbers weren’t all that grew in those early da days. Over the next few years, the University of Idaho es established its College of Agriculture, dedicated Ridenba baugh Hall and established the Pacific Northwest’s first D Department of Domestic Science (later to be called H Home Economics). The Administration Building fire in 1906 was a turnin ing point in the university’s history. John Tourtellotte, a Boise architect who had designed the state’s capitol,

A BRIEF HISTORY designed a new Tudor Goth-ic structure to symbolize the university’s growth and maturity as a major institution of higher education. The Administration Building remains the centerpiece of campus. The hiring in 1908 of the nation’s premier landscape architects,Olmsted Brothers of Massachusetts whose firm’s founding father designed New York’s Central

campus continued to grow in size and academic offerings. Among the additions were Forney Hall, the School off Education, Science Hall, Hays Hall, the Music Building, thee Library, the Student Union and outreach campus locations. In 1976 the new ASUI-Kibbie Dome won a national engineering structural achievement award. Its sound structure has withstood roaring cheers of Vandal fans (as well as the groans and wailings of rival teams) ever since. Today, the university is home to nearly 12,000 students and nearly 1,300 faculty and staff. It continues to be a leading place of learning in Idaho and the West, because although it is everresponsive to the changing needs of its students and society, it never forgets its roots and traditions. Perhaps no better example of this distinct combination of rich history and innovative servic vice is the Associated Students of the Un University of Idaho (ASUI). Today as vib vibrant as ever, ASUI has been a force on campus for more than 100 years.
