CALENDAR OF EVENTS JANUARY Apalachicola Oyster Cook-Off – This fun-filled event features lots of oysters, live music, kids’ activities and local beer. 30A Songwriters Festival – An action-packed weekend of original music from some of the country’s best singer/songwriters in intimate settings across South Walton, typically held over Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend.

FEBRUARY Sandestin Gumbo Festival – Held in the lively Village of Baytowne Wharf, it features the hottest local chefs competing to win the coveted best gumbo of the year award. Mardi Gras Dog Parade – This may be the most fun Mardi Gras celebration of all! The ever popular Krewe of Arfeous parade takes place in Sandestin and stars four-legged friends on decorated wagons and golf carts.

MARCH Seaside Half Marathon and 5K – Sponsored by Vera Bradley, this popular race sells out in advance. It features a weekend-long array of activities such as a silent auction benefiting the Seaside Neighborhood School and the delectable Taste of the Race evening event.

St. George Island Chili Cook-Off – Some like it hot at this spicy festival! Start your day with an invigorating 5k before indulging in chili and salsa culinary showdowns throughout the day.

30A St. Patrick’s Parade and Festival – Be Irish for a day with this annual parade from Blue Mountain Beach to a festive celebration at Gulf Place. 30A Cornhole Tournament – A South Walton classic, two-person teams compete on the greens of Rosemary Beach, benefiting the Special Olympics of Walton County.

APRIL Sandestin Wine Festival – Wine lovers can sample over 800 varieties of wine during this four-day festival at Baytowne Wharf, featuring culinary pavilions, live music, retail tent and much more. SandJam Fest – This two-day country music festival in Panama City Beach will blow you away with the incredible talent on stage! South Walton Beaches Wine and Food Festival Four days of exciting wine and food tastings, unique seminars, exclusive dinners and live entertainment. Seabreeze Jazz Festival – Relax and unwind at one of the country’s most acclaimed jazz showcases. This event is highly attended by jazz enthusiasts from all over the world. OceanFilm Festival – This 2-day event held outside in the Watersound Origins community showcases documentaries and short films that center around the world’s oceans and waterways, their wildlife, their advocates and aquatic activities they make possible.

ArtsQuest Fine Arts Festival – Over 125 juried artists, exhibiting in over a dozen mediums, fill Grand Boulevard’s Town Center for a weekend of art, food, wine and great live music.

​ lutterby Festival – Celebrating the migration F of the Monarch Butterfly, this arts, crafts and science festival features live music, interactive art activities, live theatre, dance performances and even a butterfly parade!

Destin Harbor Boat Parade – Spend a gorgeous night with nautical holiday lights at this cherished Gulf Coast tradition. It can be viewed from any one of Destin’s many waterfront docks, eateries or pubs.

Forgotten Coast En Plein Air – Among the world’s most prestigious plein air events, this 10-day art festival has been delighting attendees for almost two decades. Exploring the local culture and the people, places and stories behind the art, this internationally acclaimed event is not to be missed. Grayton Beach Kids Fishing Tournament – A day of fun and fishing is in store for the kids with free rod and reel combos, bait and tackle, cool t-shirts, with medals and prizes awarded to the top anglers. Digital Graffiti – The world’s first projection art festival lights up the white walls of Alys Beach for this one-of-a-kind event. Digital and video artists from around the world are invited to participate in this incredible event.

JUNE Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic – This top rated tournament offers sport fishing enthusiasts the chance to win over $1.4 million in cash prizes. The event is family-friendly and full of excitement.

JULY Rags to Riches Regatta – Spend the day at Grayton Beach watching beautiful rainbowcolored sailboats engage in friendly competition as they race from Grayton to Seagrove Beach. 4th of July Celebrations – From Sandestin to 30A, there is no shortage of ways to pay tribute to the U.S.A. Weekend events include symphony concerts, patriotic parades, field days and outstanding fireworks displays.

SEPTEMBER Sandestin Triathlon – Benefiting Sacred Heart Hospital, this event has grown to include more than 700 athletes competing in a half-mile swim in the Gulf of Mexico, a 20-mile bike ride to Blue Mountain Beach and back, ending with a 4-mile run through Sandestin.

Rosemary Beach Uncorked – A unique fall festival celebrating Rosemary Beach’s eclectic selection of dining establishments, featuring specially-prepared cuisine paired with fine wines. Trick or Treating – Seaside, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach and Sandestin are the destinations of choice for Halloween celebrations. Costumed town merchants hand out goodies among dazzling decorations.

Christmas Candlelight Tour and Open House Enjoy a candlelit tour visit in Eden Gardens State Park, letting luminaries guide you to the historic Wesley House where decorations and refreshments await. New Year’s Eve Celebrations – Panama City, Rosemary Beach, Seaside and Sandestin offer outstanding celebrations of music, fireworks and fun for the whole family!

30A Half Marathon and 5k – A scenic outand-back race through Blue Mountain Beach, this course showcases the beauty of 30A’s west end with an incredible array of events to entertain racers throughout the weekend. Young or old, conservative or hippie, Alabama or Auburn. It’s rare for a restaurant to have the power to bring people of all backgrounds together, spark intimate conversations between strangers and foster connections within a community, yet Grayton Beach’s The Red Bar did just that. Located in a ramshackle 100-year-old building mere steps from the sugar white beach, The Red Bar’s unique come-as-youare atmosphere, simple and consistently delicious menu offerings and first-class musical entertainment produced a fiercely loyal following of fans from across the globe.

Famous faces became a frequent occurrence with celebrity sightings including Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Kenny Chesney, Sam Bush, Vince Vaughn, Greg Kinnear, Stephen Spielberg and Peyton and Eli Manning, to name a few. Petit credits the success of the restaurant in part to the nightly live music that kept the party going and the customers grooving. The Red Bar Jazz Band, the beloved house band, was anchored by drumming legend Jabo Starks until his recent passing, and the space served as the birthplace of the popular local bluegrass band Dread Clampitt.

Founded in 1995 by Belgian-born owner Oli Petit with brother Philippe and father Louis, the concept was a leap of faith in a time when the 30A beaches were nearly deserted with little development and not many tourists to keep a young business afloat. Yet the team carried on with the belief that they were creating something special, and they did just that. CNN once dubbed the space, “the Panhandle artists’ enclave and celebrity hideaway of Grayton Beach.”

With the brightly adorned walls of The Red Bar as the backdrop for so many cherished memories of both locals and area travelers, it’s no surprise that news of the devastating fire in February 2019 sent ripples across the country as word of its total destruction spread via social media. Mourners gathered at the scene as the fire department worked to contain the flames, and months later, people still stop by the cleared site to pay their respects and share their colorful stories of good times come and gone.


Local artist Bryan Hand, the master behind much of The Red Bar’s original artwork including its famously photographed front door elaborates on the establishment’s significance to the community, “Over the years, The Red Bar came to embody the spirit of our community, the playful, happy and eclectic side of our life at the beach. The atmosphere was infectious and made people fall instantly in love. Whether you’d lived here for two months or twenty years, The Red Bar was the one place you’d take your friends to introduce them to the area.” Hand, also a server on and off at the restaurant for twenty years, will be an integral contributor to its rebirth. Since the day following the fire, Petit has been fiercely committed to rebuilding the restaurant and to keeping it as close to the original design as possible. In a fortuitous turn of events, Petit had secured blueprints of the historic building a decade ago making it possible to recreate an authentic footprint of the restaurant. Remnants salvaged from the fire, including the front railing where countless customers have mingled over the years waiting for a table and catching up over a jumbo-sized margarita, will be incorporated into the new space. Petit released the following statement regarding the rebuild, “On behalf of my family and the staff of The Red Bar, I want to thank the community for the tremendous outpouring of support that we have already received. It means a lot to me that we live in a county where our leaders recognize the importance of our shared history, and the efforts so many of us make to shape our community in a positive and unique way. I want to tell our patrons and my staff that we will be back, and we will rebuild to the exact previous specifications – maybe with a better bathroom. Life goes on.” Petit has assembled a distinguished team of local experts to assist in the reconstruction including BOHEME architects and O’Connell and Associates engineers. For fans who have fears of Petit being able to recreate the eclectic and charming interiors, he explains his father has long collected knick knacks, memorabilia and art that will make it easy to recreate a familiar vibe. Groundbreaking on the new building is slated to commence early October 2019. While an opening date is not yet secured, it can be assured that when the Red Bar returns, the streets of Grayton Beach will be rocking, and new legends will be born.

TWO COASTAL BARRIER ISLANDS TO EXPLORE

Fun in the sun may be easy to come by on Florida’s Gulf Coast, but for those seeking more of an adventure, Shell Island in Bay County and St. Vincent Island in Franklin County could be the answer! St. Vincent Island is a National Wildlife Refuge on a 12,300-acre undeveloped barrier island located nine miles southwest of Apalachicola. Both islands are ideal for a day trip with family or friends, but please be sure to leave no trace of your visit to these natural treasures.

SHELL ISLAND Getting there

Shell Island is only accessible by water, so if you have a boat cruise on over to the island and drop an anchor just offshore. Renting a pontoon boat is a fantastic way to see the island and, with most boats accommodating up to 10 passengers, you can bring several friends to join in on the fun. If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to reach the island, the Shell Island Shuttle is a great option. During the high season, the shuttles run daily out of St. Andrews State Park taking you to and from the island quickly and efficiently.

What to do

Panama City Beach has some of the best fishing along the gulf and Shell Island is no exception. The crystal-clear waters allow you to cast a line from the beach or right off your boat. The island is also a beautiful place for paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling where

you’ll have the opportunity to explore and discover the wonders of the gulf. No visit to Shell Island would be complete without a shell collecting expedition so take time to walk the shores and soak up the sun while you’re there. As part of the St. Andrews State Park, Shell Island has some pretty exciting native residents. From bottle-nosed dolphins and sea turtles to nesting shorebirds and deer, this wildlife sanctuary is home to a wide range of coastal creatures and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of some of them.

Go prepared! Shell Island is a great place for family fun, but make sure to bring everything you need. There are no restroom facilities, concession stands, pavilions, or trash cans on the island, so don’t forget to bring all the food and beach supplies you’ll need for a funfilled day in the sun.


ST. VINCENT ISLAND Getting there

St. Vincent Island is only accessible by water, but it’s just a ¼ mile from the coast. You can kayak over, take a personal boat or jump on the St. Vincent Island Shuttle that runs year-round from Indian Pass. The launch point is located just 10 minutes from Port St. Joe and less than 30 minutes from Apalachicola. In addition to the shuttle, there are also pleasure cruises and fishing charters available that visit the island.

What to do

Explore this natural island either by foot or by bike. Numerous trails wind through the island’s forest areas which are home to a variety of native species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Although most comfortable during the fall, winter and spring, the forest areas are open year-round and are prefect for birding and wildlife spotting. The gulf breezes and the picturesque beaches are breathtaking no matter what time of year to choose to visit St. Vincent Island. Keep an eye out for dolphins, sea turtles, and even manatees while lazing in the sun or collecting seashells. Fishing around the island is strong nearly all year. Tarpon, shark, redfish, and trout – just to name a few – are some the species you could expect to find on a chartered fishing trip or right from the beach.

St. Vincent Island is rustic and natural, but there are restrooms for your convenience. In order to maintain the island’s natural beauty, please plan to carry out everything you bring in. Furthermore, with no concession stands or cafés on the island, be sure to bring all the food and water you’ll need for your day exploring the island.

APALACHICOLA’S FLORIDA SEAFOOD FESTIVAL

W

hat could be more quintessential Florida than a seafood festival? Each autumn, locals and tourists flock to Apalachicola’s picturesque Battery Park for the two-day

Florida Seafood Festival. An authentic, down home celebration of the bounty of local waters and the people that make the Forgotten Coast region so unique, the festival is one of Florida’s oldest maritime events and most original. Founded, in part, to spread the word of Franklin County seafood throughout the state, local favorites like oysters, mullet, crabs and shrimp were fried and served free of charge to festival goers. The strategy was successful and the festival became extremely popular filling up Battery Park as evidenced by vintage photos documenting standing room only crowds hovering amongst the oaks. Seafood remains the heart of the festival with volunteers selling an array of delectable coastal treats including fried shrimp, gumbo, fried mullet, smoked mullet, and of course, oysters - served fried, steamed and raw. The food court has evolved to serve a balance of both local flavors and fair favorites such as blooming onions, turkey legs, funnel cakes and the beloved apple dumpling crisp. If you can count on one thing, it’s that you won’t leave this weekend hungry. Rooted in the rich Apalachicola fishing history, the festival kicks off each year with a “Blessing of the Fleet” led by King Retsyo (“oyster” spelled backwards) and Miss Florida Seafood. The royal pair depart on a commercial shrimping boat named “Buddy’s Boys” in honor of Buddy Ward Seafood, a fifth generation local seafood house. Area pastors of all denominations gather at the dock under

the John Gorrie Bridge and boats line up in the Apalachicola Bay to pass under the bridge and receive blessings for another year of safe journeys, bountiful catches and healthy, strong captains. Children delight in cheering on their entry in the blue crab races while a lively parade entertains young and old. Oyster lovers can participate in both oyster shucking and eating contests while running enthusiasts can race in the Red Fish Run, a 5000-meter road race. Live music fills the air, a colorful carnival features old-fashioned rides and area artists and craftsmen display their wares. The festival offers something for all and an intimate glimpse of the Forgotten Coast culture. “The Seafood Festival means different things to everyone,” explains Apalachicola resident and Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Beach Properties of Florida sales executive Shelley Shepard. “For locals, it is a weekend of family reunions. You’ll see tents set up in neighborhood yards with grills smoking, fish frying and cousins who haven’t seen each other since the year before. For our children, it’s the unofficial county fair, and they anxiously await the chance to conquer their fears on scary rides and fill up on sweet treats. It’s a great driver for our local economy and a final hurrah until the busy season resumes the following year. It’s a beloved tradition, and we love sharing a taste of our town with visitors.” The 56th installment of the event is scheduled for November 1st through 2nd, 2019 and promises to be a fun-filled, family-friendly weekend to remember.

Before the oyster eating contest, find the equally popular oyster shucking contest where participants must shuck a tray of 18 oysters as quickly as possible without mutilating, nicking or committing any other infractions against Apalachicola’s prized export. The Florida Seafood Festival champion goes on to compete in the national oyster shucking championships.

FESTIVAL PARADE The Seafood Festival Parade on Saturday travels down US Highway 98 to the Apalachicola River. With bands, floats and dignitaries from throughout the Forgotten Coast, the colorful parade is beloved by young and old alike.

BLESSING OF THE FLEET Held at Battery Park on Friday afternoon, the Blessing of the Fleet is conducted by area clergymen along with King Retsyo and Miss Florida Seafood to bless the parade of passing fishing, shrimping and oystering vessels.

RED FISH RUN Beginning at the historic Gibson Inn at the foot of the John Gorrie Bridge, the Red Fish Run is a 5000-meter (3.1 mile) road race that winds through the charming streets of Apalachicola.

BLUE CRAB RACES For the kids, the Blue Crab Races are held at the top of each hour from 1PM to 5PM on Saturday and free to any children up to age 12 with prizes for everyone who participates.

ARTS AND CRAFTS EXHIBITS Featuring up to as many as 90 arts and crafts booths, browse the wares of local artisans and craftsman at beautiful Battery Park.
