December 2011 - Fixed Price List

Welcome to my first digital Fixed Price List. You are receiving this list because at some point you have either purchased a coin from me directly or through VAuctions which I ran for 3 years, or you voluntarily found the list in my VCoins store. However you got here, thank you. If you do not wish to receive future lists, please let me know and I will remove your name from future mailings.

I started dealing in ancient coins in 1991 when I worked for CNG. In those days, there was no internet, no emails, no VCoins. If you wanted to collect ancients you either had to go to a coin show or order from a printed catalog. I remember as a collector waiting for the next NFA list or CNG list to arrive in the mail, then thumbing through it and making a quick phone call, hoping the coin I wanted was still available. I miss the old days of printed catalogs. Today I can order coins from my phone while I'm on a boat in the middle of a fjord in Norway (I did this, yes I know I'm a dork). 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, an ancient coin can be bought somewhere.

This list is an attempt to go back in time a bit. It's not printed I know, it's digital, but you can still thumb through it, flip pages, print it out if you want. Unlike coins that are posted on VCoins or Ebay at random times, it has an issue date and an expected lifetime. And like the good old days, no shopping cart. You have to call or email me to order a coin. This really isn't because I'm trying to be that old fashioned, I'm just doing this on my own and haven't figured out all the intricacies of having a shopping cart in this format. I'm not even sure this format will allow shopping cart. Hopefully I figure it out by the time List 2 is ready. If not, oh well. I have figured out html links so there are "order" links throughout the catalog.

Thank you for taking the time to read all this. Hopefully you find a coin or two that makes your heart skip a beat and your finger click on the order button.

Merry Christmas Happy Chanukah Happy New Year

Barry

How to order: All coins on this list are one of a kind and subject to prior sale. Orders will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Orders must be placed via phone call or email. I realize this is a bit old fashioned in today's modern world, but this high tech stuff is all new to me. I am figuring out how to incorporate shopping carts into this format, but until I do please bare with me and go old school. Each coin has a five digit inventory number after the price. Use this number when placing orders. A descriptive comment about the lot, preferably the part of the description in bold face, would also help. Once the order is received you will be emailed a fancy, modern, digital invoice with a link to PayPal or credit card payment, or if you prefer you can keep the entire order process 20th century and mail me a check. To order by email use the following link: Place an Order. Please include your name, shipping address and email address in the order. There are also order links throughout the catalog. I ship on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Your order will be shipped on the next shipping day after payment is received in full. Good old fashioned checks can be sent to me at the address below. All prices are in $US and payment should be made in $US. Thank you.

2012 New York International As I write this, November 24th, the New York International is just 5 weeks away and the auction catalogs are starting to arrive. I will be in New York the entire week and if you would like representation at the auction I will be attending most of the sales and can provide professional representation. If you have ever tried buying a coin at public auction, you know your chances of winning are greatly improved bidding on the floor as opposed to on the book. In general, the good coins sell to the floor and the remainders that no one really wanted sell to the book. For a small fee, I will examine the lots, discuss bidding levels and execute the bids on the floor. Contact me if you are interested in my services.

I will have a table at this year's New York International. I will be in my usual spot in the Starlight Roof Room, table S42, next to David Hendin. I would love to meet you so please stop by and say hello. Feel free to buy a coin or two as well, though that's not required to say hello. Below is a coupon you can print and clip and bring to the show for a reduced admission fee.

Kagan, "Hellenistic Coinage at Scepsis after its Refoundation in the Third Century B.C.," ANSMN 29 (1984), pl. 3, 5 var. (star above the H); SNG Copenhagen 480. EF, dark green and brown patina, nice surfaces, well struck. $795 / 20285 This is probably one of those coins I shouldn't sell as I will never find a nicer example. This is the nicest Skepsis bronze I have seen.

38. CARIA. Uncertain. Circa 4th century BC. AR Tetartemorion (6mm - 0.34 g). Ram's head right / Forepart of lion right. SNG Keckman 903; Troxell, Carians 10; SNG Kayhan 988. VF, toned. $85 / 19772

Good VF, attractively toned. $595 / 19672 A particularly charming example on a nice flan and attractively toned.

41. SELEUKID KINGS of SYRIA. Seleukos I Nikator, sole reign. 312-294 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm - 17.25 g). Seleukeia mint. Struck after 295/6 BC. Laureate head of Zeus right / Athena Promachos, brandishing spear and holding large shield, in quadriga right drawn by elephants; anchor above, Î and ÎŁ above. SC 130.2b; ESM 31. Near EF, toned, choice flan. SOLD Most would probably call this coin EF. The metal is nice, the strike is sharp, there's just a touch too much wear for me to call it EF. If you own it, you are welcome to call it EF. This is part of a group of about 10 of these I bought a few years ago. I had put this one away as my favorite. There was something about the style of the obverse and the lack of any porosity that made me decide to hold onto it for awhile.

SOLD A few years ago there was a group of Alexandrian tets that came on the market and they seemed to be everywhere. They were actually difficult to sell. The hoard seems to have dried up as I haven't seen any groups available in awhile and they are once again being asked for by collectors. As usual, no one wants the coins when they are readily available, only once they become more difficult to locate do people start to take notice.
