tudent Reports With benchmarking in literacy and numeracy undertaken and a review of checklists and anecdotal notes on children’s application to daily classroom activities, the teaching staff of Brentwood Park have been busily assigning progression points in relation to achievements within the Victorian Curriculum and writing student reports! They were most appreciative of the day afforded to them on Friday 7 June which greatly contributed to the time consumed to undertake this task. This week, members of the school’s principal class team have been busily reading the reports prior to their printing. The reports will be distributed next week on Thursday 27 June. We trust parents will take the opportunity to celebrate in the achievements of their children.
F
acilities Update Each year, we have an inspection of the Monterey Cypress trees lining our northern border carried out. Following the receipt of our Arboricultural Risk Assessment from Tree Mendous Pty. Ltd. and with the absence of students last Friday, it was an opportune time to implement the maintenance recommendations and have some additional trimming undertaken! With the dead wood removed and mulched, our next task will be its spreading!

R
eading with children Parents make a major difference by reading and talking about books and stories with their children, in any language. Reading skills can be taught at school, and parents can help build a crucial foundation for successful literacy through conversation and reading together, which develops the motivation to read, a greater level of comprehension, and strong oral language skills.
Our Index of Community Educational Advantage [ICEA] has shown slight increases over the past years along with our student enrolment, however, our listing with similar schools is adjusted annually as a result. Our NAPLAN results, as indicated by our scaled mean scores, are above all similar schools and substantially above in some areas when compared to similar schools [ICEA]. When compared to State, our results are substantially above in additional areas measured.
At a recent school leadership conference, one of the international speakers again highlighted the importance of children being engaged in sustained reading for at least 20 minutes per day. Doug Fisher, Department of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University, U.S.A. presented the following outcomes, validated by research, as part of his presentation:
STUDENT A 20 minutes reading per day 1,800,000 words per year Scores in the 90th percentile on standardised tests
STUDENT B 5 minutes reading per day 282,000 words per year Scores in the 50th percentile on standardised tests
STUDENT C 1 minute per day 8,000 words per year Scores in the 10th percentile on standardised tests

chool Council At our recent School Council Meeting on 21 May, the opportunity was provided for all in attendance to collectively view the ACARA My School website www.myschool.edu.au and to celebrate the very positive achievements and growth in student learning which were detailed there.
Student Gain: Our English results were higher when compared with schools with similar students, as well as all Australian schools for our students in both Year 3 and 5. We have maintained that interval of higher achievement from Year 3 to Year 5. Numeracy data again is higher than similar and all schools. We have maintained a higher achieving interval from Year 3 to Year 5 – again, higher than similar and all schools. We have maintained these results over the years. Year 3: We scor ed higher against schools of similar students in the top two bands for reading, writing, spelling and, grammar and punctuation. For numeracy, we also scored higher in the top two bands. In many areas, the percentage of children achieving in the top band was significantly higher. The mean is above, or substantially above, including in the top two bands. Year 5: We scor ed higher against schools of similar students in the top two bands for reading, writing, spelling and, grammar and punctuation. For numeracy, we also scored higher in the top two bands. In many areas the percentage of children achieving in the top band was significantly higher. The mean is above, or substantially above, including in the top two bands
When compared with all similar schools (interstate, etc.) for all areas, we are consistently at the high end for The concept of Index of Community Socio-Educational achievement. These results are exceptionally pleasing Advantage [ICEA] value was clarified, as was the concept of “similar” schools and Australian Schools average. The chool Council: Annual General Meeting NAPLAN 2018 data in its variety of forms – graphical, Our school’s achievement is highlighted in the number, school and national comparisons, and student Schools Annual Report to the School Community growth was retrieved and discussed in detail. 2018 which will be presented at a public meeting scheduled for 25 June, prior to the commencement of our Our school is very proud of its achievement which has next School Council Meeting. been maintained over successive years, especially in comparison to similar schools and State against which we Those who wish to attend are asked to contact the school have consistently ranked highly. to register their attendance. LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE.
Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them off their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Envelopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line. All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made). Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and per mission slips ar e required to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm bookings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the Department of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending. We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
