Robustness. Strong defense as a standard.
Consistently robust The latest generation of technology using the example of the Arocs: • Heavy-duty gear, such as the temperature- and vibration-resistant ceramic board • New clutch generation for a maximum torque of 3,000 Nm available
No matter if tractor or standard truck, protected or unprotected: military trucks have to provide high resistance for every challenge. These attributes have always been associated with Mercedes-Benz Trucks. They prove their robustness with good reason: our trucks are distinguished by their durability and performance, solid and heavy-duty vehicle designs, optimized for offroad-use chassis and suspension components, and highly stable frames.
Robustness can only be leveraged if implemented consistently down to the last detail. Therefore, not only the body and chassis of Mercedes-Benz Defense Vehicles are designed to be robust, but also the entire drivetrain.
A high ground clearance makes for great embankment and ramp angles. Thus, the vehicles move forward reliably even under the most difficult conditions.
In addition, the wider torque curve reduces the number of switching operations and thereby puts less force on clutch and transmission.
10
For example, Mercedes-Benz engines do not only convince with high performance, but also by their sturdy and durable construction.
• Robust axis made of cast steel for high axle loads of up to 18 tons • Narrow frames, that are characterized by torsional flexibility and stability • Reinforced stabilizers at the second rear axle for extreme durability

Chassis competence. Uncompromising mission-readiness in every situation.
All-wheel drive, high ground clearance, tire pressure regulation device, differential locks, twistable frames – the list of innovations of Mercedes-Benz in the field of chassis competence is long. These product advantages lay the foundation for a high off-road ability and have remained so under the harshest conditions for many Âdecades. And every new day brings a new challenge: your next trip. Mercedes-Benz thrives on constant innovation and improvement. A fact that can be experienced with the newest truck generation: The Euro VI trucks Arocs and Unimog show that an integration of the most advanced drive and emissions control technology does not have to be borne by a robust chassis. On the contrary: due to the simplified operation, both make their use easier and contribute to a high driving comfort – even in extreme terrain.
12
Ground clearance and high ramp angles Mercedes-Benz Trucks for military use display their strength not only on paved roads and fixed routes, but also where uncompromised off-road capability is needed. The new Arocs is setting a good example.
Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS). Improving traction on different surfaces.
To improve traction on soft and sandy surfaces, for example, Mercedes-Benz has developed ample tire pressure control systems for single-tire, all-wheel drive vehicles to enhance the outstanding, inherent off-road characteristics of such trucks.
Your CTIS advantages • for optimal traction on every surface • prevents the enviroment and reduces tire wear by lowering the specific ground pressure • improves vehicle mobility and reliability • avoids vehicle recoveries • adjusts tire pressure while driving • regulates tires in the front and rear axles together or separately • monitors pressure of each tire via pressure gauges, reliably from -40°C to +80°C
Mercedes-Benz all-wheel drive vehicles fitted with a tire inflation system can traverse even the toughest of terrains – whether muddy fields, desert sand dunes, climbing grass-covered embankments, or fording rivers. The vehicles tackle obstacles like these easily and safely.
The driver can set maximum air pressure levels. A safety device ensures that these limits are not exceeded. The driver can continue the journey, even if there is minor tire damage, because the system can provide a continuous supply of air. If the tire damage is more severe, however, the driver can close the blocking valves on the serviceable tires. The entire air volume is then sent to the damaged tire. If the control system malfunctions, the tires can be manually supplied by means of additional tire inflation valves. The pressure relief system is switched off when moving, and the tire pressure level is no longer displayed.
Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS). The control system switches are mounted within easy reach on the dashboard. Pressure gauges display the tire pressures separately for front and rear axles during the inflation or deflation process to enable the driver to adjust the tire pressure accurately for different load and operating conditions.

Semi Tire Inflation System (STIS). This system only allows the tire pressure to be adjusted when the vehicle is at a standstill. The driver preselects the required tire pressure on a control panel, and then – after the connecting hoses have been fitted – adjusts the tire pressure as required. Automatic Central Tire Inflation System (ACTIS). This system allows tire pressures to be set at specific values in the control unit. The driver can then select them to suit the prevailing ground conditions. The tire pressure control system is integrated in the vehicle controls and can be used to preselect tire pressures for driving on solid surfaces
(roads), on slightly soft surfaces (off-road), or on particularly soft surfaces (sand and mud). In emergencies, a special switch can be used to preselect a much lower tire pressure to enable a bogged-down vehicle with poor traction to free itself. A monitoring circuit checks the tire pressure at regular intervals, with minor air losses automatically rectified. If the vehicle speed is incompatible with the preselected tire pressure and the driver fails to observe the warning messages, the pressure is automatically increased. The system is unpressurised when moving and needs to be activated when the ground conditions require this.
Central Tire Inflation System in the Unimog (tirecontrol / tirecontrol plus). This system constantly shows the front and rear axle tire pressure levels on the instrument cluster’s LCD display. Switches also enable the driver to operate the system while moving. This means that various load and operating states can be individually accommodated. Pressure losses in a tire can be compensated during a journey by pumping in air.
The single tires increase driving stability and traction and have low rolling resistance

System competence. From standardized interfaces to the NATO container solutions.
Powerful take-offs at transmission and engine are part of the Mercedes-Benz standard. With them, a variety of devices such as cranes or hydraulic pumps can be powered. This increases the application possibilities and thus the productivity of the vehicles.
20
Vehicle hydraulic and electrical interfaces. With the vehicle hydraulic equipment such as winches or hydraulic work tools can be operated. For example, the single-circuit of the Unimog provides a working pressure of 240 bar at 60 l/min flow volume and a pump power of 24 kW. Standardized plug connections are located at the front and at the rear of the vehicle. For the electrical supply of equipment, four standardized sockets are available.
NATO container solution: standardized flexibility for logistics trucks. Mercedes-Benz Defense Vehicles supports the deployment flexibility of its customers through the possibility to modularize its vehicles – for example, through the possibility to load standardized NATO container solutions. The system ensures that containers for a variety of applications can be mounted on one and the same logistics vehicle. Thus, for example, the Zetros can be converted within a few seconds from tank truck to a truck with box body.

Unimog unique chassis expertise. Flexible frame design. It gives way, when and where required. At the heart of the uncompromising all-terrain capabilities of the Unimog U 4000 / U 5000 is the flexible frame with tubular cross-members, which ensures the necessary rigidity on the road and allows great torsional flexibility off-road. This is provided by the three-point mounting of cab, engine, and transmission, as well as the defined interfaces for mounting superstructures and implements. This means that axle articulation of up to 30° is possible.
Portal axles. Extreme off-roading made easy. Portal axles are the secret behind the outstanding ground clearance of the Unimog U 4000 / U 5000. With them, it copes with impassable terrain and obstacles up to half-a-meter high. A reduction gear on the wheel-hub drive allows the full torque to take effect on the ground for increased traction over difficult terrain.
Axle suspension. Keeping all four wheels firmly on the ground. One advantage off-road is the axle suspension with thrust tube, control arm, and coil springs. This somewhat unusual type of suspension for an off-roader provides long spring travel and outstanding axle articulation. Stabilizers at front and rear ensure high cornering stability and safe driving.
Manually engageable four-wheel drive. Powerful – off and on the road. With its rear-axle drive for driving on roads and the manually engageable four-wheel drive for off-road work, maximum traction is available in every situation. And over extremely difficult terrain, differential locks in both axles make sure the power train is working at full strength. Even if only one wheel has sufficient traction, the Unimog still gets ahead and copes with gradients of up to 100%.
Safe over any terrain. With large angles of approach or departure at front or rear, climbing ability up to 100% and fording ability to a depth of 1.19 m, the Unimog gets you to any destination. Even when fording, sensitive units and electrical installations remain high and dry.
Thrust tube technology. Greatest possible diagonal torsion. The special thrust tube construction gives the springs extremely long travel and permits diagonal axle articulation of up to 30°. As the thrust tube encloses the drive shaft, it is safe from dirt and damage.
• Extremely long spring travel, maximum diagonal torsion • Switchable all-wheel drive • Differential locks at front and rear engaged or disengaged while driving

F igures according to Directives 92 / 21 / EEC or 97 / 27 / EC, as applying to the vehicle class in question, version applicable at the time of going to press, (kerb weight incl. tools / spare wheel and trailer coupling, if supplied by manufacturer, fuel tank 90% full, driver and luggage where applicable) for standard-specification vehicles. Optional extra and accessories as a general rule increase this value with corresponding decrease in military payload. Note: The kerb weight figures are reduced by up to 75 kg with certification by ISO-M06 1176 standards. 2 For vehicles with all-wheel drive the curb weight is increased by approximately 130-165 kg. 3 On vehicles with four-wheel drive the military payload capacity is reduced by about 130-165 kg. 4 For Sprinter NGT (bivalent). 5 Increased permissible gross combination weight in conjunction with reinforced trailer coupling as an option. Detailed dimensions can be found in our data sheet or ask your Mercedes-Benz dealer. 1
