A rugged, multi-ethnic country of 29 million people, Afghanistan is united by its determination to overcome adversity. When 3 million refugees began returning home after the fall of the Taliban regime in 2002, BRAC was prompted to help in conditions similar to Bangladesh 40 years ago. The organisation sent an experienced and well-qualified team to launch its first operations outside its home country. Today, BRAC is the largest NGO in Afghanistan, having touched the lives of over 24 million people with programmes in healthcare, microfinance, and rural livelihood development - while also educating nearly 200,000 students, the majority of whom are girls.
