A Tribute to A Bit of Rappahannock... When the fields are fresh and green, ‘tis then old Black Rock should be seen. Its hills and meadows most serene, can readily inspire a poet’s dream. When storms threaten, as they often do, Black Rock takes on a different hue. No matter what the time of year, we always hold our Black Rock dear. It’s always there to excite emotion, and rekindle anew our great devotion. I’ve traveled far, by sea and air, and never have found a land so fair As Black Rock Farm with its tranquil air. — Jack Dwyer In Loving Memory of John J. Dwyer January 10, 1919-July 27,2003

Headmaster’s Pub Beer, wine and food served; on weekend nights, live music also makes the Headmaster’s Pub a happening place, as do pool tables — and now Schoolhouse Nine, the county’s first golf course, right

next door. Headmaster’s owner Cliff Miller’s plan was that the pub would be a likely stop before or after tackling the wily and fetching nine-hole course, designed by Michael McCartin. Appears he was right. The pub is open 11 to 10 Thursday-Sunday, 11 to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturdays, at 12018 Lee Hwy. Call 540-987-5008 or visit headmasterspub.com.

The Inn at Little Washington

Still, 38 years after opening in a converted repair shop, it is the reason most out-of-towners venture into Rappahannock County. The Inn always emphasizes local foods and increasingly grows its own. O’Connell and The Inn are the recipients of five James Beard Awards including Restaurant and Chef of the Year. Tula’s Restaurant and Bar A Little Washington favorite among locals and visitors alike, Tula’s Restaurant and Bar was

Indeed, the occasional black bear is known to lumber past the umbrelladecked patio, which is a venue for live music, movies and other special events. The following is a list of private, nonprofit environmental organizations that operate in Rappahannock County: Krebser Fund for Rappahannock County Conservation The Krebser Fund was created in honor of Dr. Werner Krebser, who served on the county planning commission for 22 years and provided a strong voice for preserving Rappahannock’s scenic beauty and open spaces. RAPPAHANNOCK NEWS

RAPPAHANNOCK COUNTY by rick kohler Rappahannock County, a treat for your eye and soul. With 25% of the county in the Shenandoah National Park and another 25% in Conservation Easements, it is a beautiful, peaceful and interesting place of rolling pastures, forests, clean mountain rivers and abundant “named” foothills. Numerous Washingtonians own second homes here and enjoy no stoplights, no box stores and no strip malls! The skies are clear and one can see the Milky Way at night.

Roy’s Orchard & Market, The Corner Store and Merry Moo provide a broad array of delicacies, from gluten free to fresh fish, fabulous bacon and excellent fruits. Local B&Bs, the Grill, Tavern, Tula’s, bakeries and other restaurants including the Inn at Little Washington offer excellent dining, with much fare produced by the numerous organic and small niche farms. With the national park

RAPPAHANNOCK NEWS

as a neighbor, one can hike mountain trails, swim under waterfalls and learn much about nature. Add an amazing Arts Association (RAAC. org), an Environmental Protection League (RLEP. org), the Theatre at Little Washington, Castleton Festival, an Education Foundation, many other non-profits and spectacular fundraisers and you begin to see the depth of this community. The Rappahannock Comprehensive Plan calls for Agriculture and Tourism. The founding fathers of the zoning did well, and with no major highway, railroad or industry in the county, it has remained much the same for the past 60 years. There is an annual Fodderstack 10K, a Rappahannock Rough Ride for bikes, the House Tour & Dried Flower Sale, an Artist’s Studio Tour, Film Festival, many fine wineries, breweries and even a distillery. There is a great deal happening in this charming county of only 7,000 people just one hour west of DC, or as one author put it, “On the Morning Side of the Blue Ridge.”
