Housing

Yavapai County is one of the fastest growing counties in Arizona. The City of Prescott is the largest urban area within the county. The city's growth has been around 4 percent per year for the past decade, and is expected to continue near that rate. More than 100,000 people reside within the tri-city area, which includes Prescott, Prescott Valley and Chino Valley. The majority of these residents live within about a 10-mile radius of downtown Prescott. As people move to the area, housing demands will continue to be met through new construction, and by maintaining and upgrading existing dwellings. All construction is subject to high standards of quality, mandated by state and local codes, and monitored by city staff. Prescott’s diverse character is exemplified by the many neighborhoods that offer a unique blend of housing and lifestyle options, from the historic and stately Victorian homes downtown, to apartment complexes along major roadways, to senior living facilities, to new single-family homes in the city’s rural periphery.

areas. Preservation incentives are available to assist owners in defraying the cost of restoration and maintenance. Beautiful period homes can be found among mature shade trees throughout the community. Some of the finest examples of Victorian homes in the West are located in Prescott. There are about 132 properties in Yavapai county, and approximately 65 objects in Prescott that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Economy

Since Prescott’s founding as the first Territorial Capital of Arizona and the establishment of nearby Fort

Whipple, government has been an important factor in Prescott’s economy. Headquarters of the Prescott National Forest, Arizona Department of Transportation, Veterans Administration Medical Center of Prescott, Yavapai County, the City of Prescott, and the Prescott Public Schools are all major employers. Excluding government, tourism ranks as the highest income resource for the community. Prescott is a tourist attraction not only from other parts of the U.S., but for visitors from around the world who are attracted to the beautiful surroundings, wonderful climate, and year-round activities available. Full convention facilities for groups of all sizes are available. Sports camps and church affiliated

camps are also significant contributors to Prescott’s overall economy. Top employment opportunities also exist in the medical field, retail and tourism. With the development of the Prescott Airpark and Commerce Center, new opportunities are being created in manufacturing, distribution and office operations. A live, work and play environment is envisioned for the approximately 8,000 acres surrounding the area. The construction and real estate industries are also major contributors to the economy in Prescott, with new quality homes being built in many excellent Prescott areas.

Adult Living Prescott’s median resident age is about 55 years old. There are about 15 assisted living facilities located in the city of Prescott. Living in a retirement community which offers seniors more choices and lifestyle amenities is a popular choice for housing. Many of these assisted living facilities offer spacious studios, one or two-bedroom apartments, with kitchens and private baths. Restaurant type meals, housekeeping and linen service, beauty shops, transportation, activities and programs, and all utilities except telephone are generally included. Residents are encouraged to bring their own furnishings to decorate to their taste. There is time for solitude in one’s own apartment, yet a community environment where someone is available 24- hours a day to lend a helping hand. For those who need more help there usually is a nursing staff on hand. Prescott also has another type of senior center, the non-profit Adult Day Services for adults who cannot or choose not to be home alone during the day; and for people who need a short respite from the responsibilities of round-the-clock care of their parent or spouse. www.adultcareservices.org Prescott has an abundance of assisted-living options for seniors wanting to give up the responsibilities of a home and yard, and who look forward to the new friendships and

activities that come with retirement communities. Prescott is also fortunate to have a special assisted living residence designed especially for people with memory loss. The nonprofit Margaret T. Morris Center provides 24-hour services, programs and activities for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias who are no longer able to live at home. The Center has a home-like feel, and family members are welcome and encouraged to visit and participate in activities, or join the counseling and support group. The Center also has the region’s first sensory garden with outdoor space for activities, gardening, strolling and family meeting spaces; a design that focuses on the five senses – the residents’ last strong links to their past and connection to the natural world. The Arizona Pioneers’ Home

The Arizona Pioneers’ Home is a continuing care retirement home operated and funded by the State of Arizona. The Home provides care and services to residents living independently, as well as to those requiring personal, assisted living, intermediate and skilled care; criterion for admission is affixed in state statute. Frank M. Murphy donated four and a half acres in southwest Prescott as the building site, and later T.G. Norris donated adjacent land to the North. The original red brick threestory building with porticos was designed by local Prescott architect, W.S. Elliot and built for $25,000. The Pioneers’ Home opened its doors on February 1, 1911, situated atop a granite promontory overlooking the City of Prescott, Arizona. A.J. Doran was named the first Superintendent and served from February, 1911 to August, 1912. Initially the home was built to house 40 men, but in 1916, pursuant to the benevolent donation from W.S. Parsons, an addition of a women’s wing was completed to provide for 20 women. Later, in 1929, the home was again expanded to include Arizona’s Hospital for Disabled Miners. Today, the Home can care for up to 150 residents, and operates with appropriations of approximately $5 million annually through state land trusts, a miners’ hospital fund, state charitable funds and the general fund. The current population of residents includes individuals from throughout the State of Arizona. Residents of the Pioneers’ Home pay a portion of their care based on their income, which is deposited back into the general fund. Located at 300 S. History Strolling through the downtown area, you will notice several historic buildings. Some are in the process of restoration and others are preserved as they appeared at the turn of the century. Historic churches, the County Courthouse, the Sharlot Hall Museum (with the old log structures), the stately Victorian homes, the Hassayampa Hotel, the Hotel Vendome and the Elks Theater all give testimony to Prescott’s rich past. Shopping is a one-of-a-kind experience in downtown Prescott. A wide range of choices are available from practical simplicity to the exquisite. Unique southwestern wear, curios and souvenirs, hand-crafted jewelry, vintage apparel, designer fashions and home decorating items reflect the southwestern lifestyle. Antique stores abound; the downtown antique emporiums offer collections ranging from distinctive to whimsical. Prescott’s rugged beauty, history and southwestern ambiance is reflected in much of the art that is displayed in the Prescott galleries. Here you’ll find both traditional and contemporary art by local artists. One of the most relaxing moments after a fulfilling day of browsing and shopping or sight-seeing is sitting down to a delightful lunch or dinner or perhaps just a great cup of coffee. Downtown Prescott is a cornucopia of wonderful sights, smells and tastes. From laid back burgers and brew to elegant gourmet dining, New Orleans shrimp to Texas steak, Prescott’s fare is served up in their unique, historic southwest atmosphere by friendly down home folks. For excitement, round off the evening with some foot stompin’ country western music along Prescott’s historic Whiskey Row or turn the corner for traditional jazz, spicy funk or classic rock. From morning ‘til midnight with

dozens of interesting and fun things to do, Downtown Prescott offers a rewarding, enriching cultural experience.   The Yavapai County Courthouse in the heart of downtown is a Neo-Classic Revival built in 1916. The granite structure is surrounded by garden-like grounds and large scale public bronze sculptures reflecting the Midwestern and New England background of Prescott’s early settlers. Perhaps the most famous of Prescott’s impressive collection of large scale bronzes is the one of William Owen “Bucky” O’Neill. Dedicated to the “Roughriders” of the Spanish American War, this amazing bronze sculpture is located on the Yavapai County Courthouse Grounds. The first “Roughrider” to enlist in Arizona Territory was William O. “Bucky” O’Neill who arrived in Prescott in 1881. He started his political career as probate judge, then became Sheriff of Yavapai County, and finally was elected Mayor of Prescott. O’Neill later resigned as mayor, and formed a cavalry regiment of Arizona men. He was promoted to captain on May 4, 1895, and along with 210 men left for San Antonio, Texas. There he was given command of Troop ‘A’, part of the First United States Volunteer Calvary. Theodore Roosevelt referred to them as “a regiment of rough riding men”. From then on the regiment which O'Neill joined was called “Roosevelt’s Rough Riders". Unfortunately, O’Neill was fatally wounded in battle at San Juan Hill on July 2, 1898. The bronze statute of Bucky O'Neill was sculpted by Solon Borglum, and dedicated at the Courthouse Plaza in 1907. The Courthouse Plaza is the gathering place of the community for festivals and events such as “The Fourth of July Parade” and Territorial Days. Live theater, arts and crafts shows, concerts and other events occur year round at the Courthouse Plaza which have become a valued tradition and source of entertainment for Prescott residents as well as visitors. The former Sacred Heart Catholic Church building is a fine example of a late gothic brick structure. It was the culmination of efforts by French-born Rev. F. Albert Quetu who arrived in Prescott in 1889 and served here until 1908. The 108 year old structure is considered by many to be one of the best examples of 19th Century religious architecture in Arizona. The former church building is now occupied by Prescott’s Fine Arts Association. Sacred Heart Catholic Church is currently located at the top of Fleury

History St.,about 2.5 blocks west of Montezuma St.,off of Gurley St. in Prescott, AZ. Prescott’s Grand Hotel,“The Hassayampa Inn” is another great example of the charming buildings of Arizona’s earlier days. The Spanish Colonial Revival is one block east of the picturesque Courthouse Plaza on Gurley Street. The stately hotel opened its doors in 1927, and has retained its western elegance with embossed copper panels and warm hued plaster embellished with colorful scrollwork and giant brass chandeliers. The name Hassayampa is an Indian expression for 'River that flows upside down.’ The Hassayampa River characteristically sinks beneath the surface at intervals only to re-appear at some distant place. This ‘river of enchantment’ became the inspiration for the name of an equally enchanting hotel. This downtown central core along with the surrounding area of historic residential homes is what gives Prescott its wonderful nostalgic ambiance. The preservation zeal of the community is a continuing project to preserve the colorful history that Prescott was founded on. Within Prescott, there are located many homes and business buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

In our attempt to model our values, we built a campus that showcases environmentally-sound building techniques, including passive and active solar energy, water collection systems, a constructed wetlands waste-management system, and drought-tolerant landscaping. The complete development of our campus has been based on minimal impact and sustainable building practices. The James Learning Center obtained a Gold Rating from the U.S. Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification program. The LEED Rating System is a set of guidelines that evaluate environmental performance and provide a definitive standard to measure and document our green building goals. This was the first building to achieve this rating in Yavapai County. The adjacent grounds model water conservation, fire-wise landscaping, and the use of native plants in re-vegetation. The site is operated under a Special Use Permit with the Prescott National Forest, USDA Forest Service. Through memberships and donations, the creative education staff develops innovative year-round programs. Each year, many thousands of children and adults are reached through day camps, family programs, school programs, field studies, lectures, workshops, special events and other activities. The Central Arizona Highlands, a unique biological and geological transition zone, lies between the colorful Sonoran Desert and the vast Colorado plateau of Arizona. As an outdoor classroom, it is integrated into learning programs for all ages. In keeping with the mission of being wise caretakers of the land, the constructed campus area showcases practical green building strategies, fire-wise living, water conservation, and environmental landscaping/site revegetation. The Highlands Center offers extensive family programs, afterschool programs, and week-long summer day camps. They host field studies, lectures, workshops, and other activities to broaden the adult community’s understanding of natural history in the Central Arizona Highlands. Museums Sharlot Hall Museum

Located in Downtown Prescott, the Sharlot Hall Museum was founded in 1927 by Sharlot Mabridth Hall, poet, historian, and independent thinker, whose passion to preserve the Territorial Governor’s Mansion has led to the development of the complete Museum campus you find here today. The Museum’s buildings form an architectural sequence spanning the years from the founding of Prescott in 1864 to the present. The exhibits and the Museum’s collections of artifacts (clothing, tools, vehicles, weapons), photographs, documents, and buildings tell the stories of those who settled Arizona and the West, of the Native Americans who preceded them, and of the area’s rich natural environment. Completed in 1979, the Museum Center is the hub around which Museum activities revolve. In the lobby you’ll find an exhibit about the founder of the Museum, Sharlot M. Hall. The museum was built in 1935 from native wood and stone, to resemble an Indian pueblo. It was constructed with labor provided by the Civilian Works Administration and the Smoki People. The Smoki People were a group of Prescott citizens organized in 1921 and dedicated to the perpetuation of American Indian ceremonies and dances. The Museum houses irreplaceable collections of prehistoric and

Governor, John Goodwin, and his staff. Large and well built, it is called a “mansion” in comparison to the tents, wagons, and crude cabins that were homes for the rest of Prescott’s new citizens in 1864. In 1927 Sharlot M. Hall moved into the Governor’s Mansion and opened it as a museum. The Bashford House (Gift Shop and Museum), is an excellent example of Prescott’s Victorian architecture, the height of housing fashion for the thirty years before statehood. The Bashford House was built in 1877. Fort Misery is the oldest log building associated with the Territory of Arizona. It was built on the banks of Granite Creek (two blocks south of the Museum) in 1863-64. Sharlot Hall had it disassembled in 1934 and reassembled on the Museum grounds. The Fremont House, built in 1875, served as the home of the fifth territorial governor of Arizona (1878-1881). The sophisticated construction of this house reflects the rapid growth of Prescott during the ten years after 1864.

Bagdad

The small mining town of Bagdad sits on Bridle Creek in the rugged Aquarius Mountains, approximately 60 miles west of Prescott at an elevation of about 4,101 feet. In 1882 copper ore was discovered in the area. The Cyprus Bagdad Copper Mine, now owned by FreeportMcMoran, still operates today and produces both copper and molybdenum.

Jerome

Jerome, sometimes nicknamed “The City in the Sky,” is situated a short drive east on Highway 89A at an elevation of about 5,435'. As one of the most talked about mining camp in America, it was a roaring, violent town, once called the most wicked city in America at one time. Three prospectors staked claims on rich copper deposits in 1876, which they later sold to the United Verde Copper Company in 1883. Eugene Jerome was the venture’s principal backer. A new owner, W.M. Clark, brought in a narrow gauge railroad to reduce freight costs. By the early 20th century, the United Verde was the largest producing copper mine in the Arizona Territory. In 1912, James S. Douglas purchased and developed the Little Daisy Mine. Copper production peaked in about 1929 and the population was around 15,000 then. Loss of profits brought Jerome mining days to an end in 1953. By 1955, Jerome’s population was less than 100, giving it

Located near Bridle Creek resides a 27-acre fenced riparian habitat located behind the Community Center at the base of Sanders Mesa. A dirt trail follows the intermittently flowing stream and provides an easy nature walk that is readily accessible to those interested. One should not confuse the spelling of Bagdad, AZ with that of Baghdad Iraq. The name supposedly comes from the first miners in the area, a father–son team. Together they hauled the ore out in bags filled by the son and aided by the dad. When the son had a bag filled he would yell, “bag Dad”. Hence the name "Bagdad". www.bagdadaztown.com

Montezuma Castle

Sinagua farmers began building this five-story, 20-room dwelling early in the 12th century. Montezuma Castle stands in a cliff recess a hundred feet above the valley in the Camp Verde area. Early settlers marveled at the structure and thought mistakenly that it was Aztecan in origin. A short distance west is Castle A, once an imposing six-story

The well is a limestone sink formed long ago by the collapse of an immense underground cavern. The springs that feed it flow continuously. Both the Hohokam and Sinagua irrigated crops with its waters. Traces of their irrigation ditches, thickly coated with lime, can be seen. The Hohokam pithouse was built about 1100 AD. Did You Know? About 3 million years ago

the Colorado Plateau uplifted and erosion by wind, rain and snowmelt created Oak Creek Canyon and exposed the layers of sediment to form the spectacular red rock formations seen around Sedona today. Human history can be traced back 4,000 years when the first known hunter/gatherers settled in the valley. A more advanced civilization emerged between 900 and 1350 A.D. Known as the Sinagua people (meaning "without water" in Spanish), they built pueblos and cliff houses, were proficient farmers, potters, made jewelry, established trade routes and had an understanding of astronomy. After their mysterious disappearance about 1400 A.D, the Yavapai and Apache peoples began to occupy this area. The first Anglo settler in Sedona was John James Thompson, followed by a few more settlers during the 1880’s. These early inhabitants lived a precarious existence, hunting, fishing and farming a few acres to keep their families fed. By the turn of the century the new settlers had diverted water from Oak Creek to irrigate and water the few head of cattle they had acquired. By the time T.C. Schnebly had arrived with his

Tuzigoot, which is Apache for “crooked water,” is the remnant of a Sinaguan village built between 1125 and 1400. It crowns the summit of a long ridge that rises 120 feet above the Verde Valley. The original pueblo was two stories high in places and had 77 ground-floor rooms. There were few exterior doors; entry was by way of ladders through openings in the roofs. The village began as a small cluster of rooms that were inhabited by about 50 persons for a hundred years. In the 1200's the population doubled and doubled again as refugee farmers, fleeing drought in outlying areas settled here. The next rodeo will be July 1-7, 2019. (928) 445-3103 Source: Prescott Frontier Days
