41st Annual Don Raabe Charities Classic Williams enjoying role as Raabe Classic president By JOE VINELLI Era Sports Editor

It’s been smooth sailing for new Don Raabe Big 30 Charities Classic president Frank Williams eight months into his role. Williams, who took over the title of president in December, served three years as vice president under thenpresident Bill Kleinberger. “Bill was helpful,” Williams said. “He was organized and prepared. I saw what he was able to accomplish. Bill was successful. It’s an honor to follow him.” The game, in its 41st year, has raised over $1.6M for numerous charities and personal causes throughout the Twin Tiers. “The schools that are participating are very excited about the game,” Williams added. “We have had an excellent response as far as the excitement level from both New York and Pennsylvania. “I had one parent from Gowanda come up to me on Press Day (May 18) and say this is a great thing you are doing. He didn’t realize we

gave money away.” The challenge for Williams and his colleagues is to keep the game competitive. “We have lost some schools from New York and have been forced to pick up new schools like Frewsburg and Southwestern,” Williams added. “The biggest problems with New York are the school cuts and the merging of schools.” Williams said he would like to see a little more cooperation from the New York coaches. “It’s harder to get New York coaches for the Raabe Classic than it is Pennsylvania coaches,” Williams admitted. “Some of the coaches in New York are not as excited as Pennsylvania about taking part in the game. “In Pennsylvania, we had no problem getting coaches. Our first choice was Virgil Graham and his staff at OttoEldred. Virgil said ‘yes.’ “There are a lot of young coaches in New York who have families. They don’t want to take time away from their families.” One topic that generates a

lot of discussion is the Raabe Classic kickoff time (7 p.m.). “We kicked around the starting time,” Williams noted. “A lot of the guys on the committee want to keep the starting time as close to the regular season starting times — 7 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. — as possible.” The committee also discussed eliminating two practices leading up to the game, but Williams said those two days are critical for the coaches to install their terminology and formations. Williams said it is important to promote the Raabe Classic whenever possible. “We want to keep the game in the forefront of the public,” Williams said. “We want them to know the first Saturday in August is Big 30 football day. “There are a lot of people who love high school football. Our attendance has been really strong the last few years to indicate that. “We have a good committee. There are a lot of great guys who have many different talents. We have brought in some good people. “These guys on the com-

The ceremony was conducted by Bill Kleinberger, then-president of the Raabe Classic Committee. Mrs. Joan Raabe, widow of the Classic’s founder (Don Raabe), along with two participants from the 2013 game, Kayla Funk and Zach Zawatski, made the check presentations. The distributions bring the total money given away in the year 2013 to $27,222. The total gifts from Game 1 through Game 40 stands at about $1.6 million. The event was hosted by CNB, which was represented by Robin Colwell and Patty Arlington. The following individuals and organizations received gifts: McKean County Historical Society, Duke

PORT ALLEGANY — There will be a new man roaming the sidelines for the Port Allegany High School football program this fall. Justin Bienkowski, a 10year assistant with the Gators, is taking over the reins in 2014, replacing Mike Bodamer, who went 59-38 in his nine seasons as head coach, including a trip to the PIAA Class A semifinals in 2012. “I’ve always wanted to be a head coach,” Bienkowski said. “I have the full support of my family and I’m pumped. I’m taking care of some of the administrative stuff right now, but I’ve already been in contact with several coaches in the area, scheduling 7-on-7s.” Bienkowski, who served a year under Bob Haskins before Bodamer got the head job, also has the reassurance of knowing that assistants Jason Luther, Nate Zitnik and Chad Saltsman will remain on staff. Luther is the head coach of the Gators’ basketball team, while Zitnik heads the baseball program and Saltsman is also an assistant wrestling coach. Bodamer is staying in the fold as well with the junior high program. “Mike genuinely knows the game inside and out, and

he’s a heck of a good coach,” Bienkowski said of Bodamer. It’s that type of togetherness and camaraderie that has made the process a smooth transition for Bienkowski. “That was my first question, are you guys going to be around for a while?” Bienkowski said. “When those guys told me they were in, it made it an easy decision. I know what’s going on in one corner of the field with Nate, and the same thing with Chad and Jason. I never have to second-guess what they’re going to do. We all get along and hang out outside of work. I have both the major sports taken care of with those guys and that’s a huge comfort.” Bienkowski hails from Allegheny Mountain League territory, having grown up in Johnsonburg and played for the Rams, graduating in 1998. It was there where he developed his love of football, particularly at the high school level. “I watched in the late ’80s when both Johnsonburg and Port Allegany were in their heyday,” he said. “My brother and I both played for Johnsonburg, and high school football became ingrained in us.” Port Allegany had a season for the ages in 2012, going 13-0 before losing to eventual state champion Clairton in the state semifinals. Winning is the expectation, as it is for every team, but Bienkowski made it clear that it’s about so much more than that. “Everybody wants to win, but I want to preach to the kids to get better every day,” he said. “I’m an attention to detail kind of guy. If you strive to get better every day, things will take care of themselves. Give me two, two-and-a-half hours a day, and we’ll make you better young men and hopefully they can apply that. Ninety-nine point nine percent of the kids are done playing football when they graduate high school, but if they can take those life lessons with them, then we’ve done our job.” The first-time head coach knows who he is and what he stands for. And if he ever has any questions, he can always look down the hall. “Mike and I teach pretty much next door to each other at the high school,” Bienkowski said. “We’ve had a good turn out for sign-ups and the kids are putting the time in. I’m ready to go.”

Three quarterbacks named to all-star team in 2013 By RONALD KLOSS Era Sports Writer

Offenses put up impressive numbers during the 2013 football season and that resulted in three quarterbcks being named to the Olean Times Herald Big 30 All-Star Team. The OTH Big 30 committee, made up of members from both sides of the state line, held its annual selection meeting on Nov. 10 in Olean to select the 30-player team. A total of 16 players were named to the offensive unit and 14 make up the defensive squad. The trio of quarterbacks - Kane’s Kevin Cleer, Olean’s Chance Anzivine and Cuba-

Rushford’s Carl Holmes - accounted for nearly 4,000 yards of passing offense this season. Cleer was one of five Wolves named to the team. Joining him on offense were wide receiver Jeff Kocjancic and lineman Nathan Klaiber, while teammates Evan DeLong (lineman) and James Lingenfelter (linebacker) were placed on the defense. The Wolves posted a perfect 9-0 regular season and also won the Allegheny Mountain League championship. They finished the season 11-1 after losing to Karns City in the District 9 Class AA title game.

Score of 58 wins scramble The team of Keith Stauffer, Gary Winner, Jeff Burgess and Barry Stauffer shot a score of 58 to win the first flight as part of the Don Raabe Big 30 Charities Classic golf scramble July 20 at Pine Acres Country Club. Terry Fuqua, Jacques Lagrua, Bob Vicini and David Horn were second at 59. Winning the second flight were Mike DePalma, Amy DePalma, Paul DePalma and Josh Stauffer (58). They won on a match of cards over Mike Butler, Dan Disney, Mark Smith and Zach Smith (58).

GOOD LUCK

Capturing the third flight were Kevin Kelley, Mike Bombasay, Joe Miller and Gerry Pehonsky (67). They turned back the challenge of Ron Smith, Don Smith, Jim Persichini and Mark Persichini (70). Closest to pin winners were Lagrua, Butler, Bill Swanson and Randy Titus.

GOOD LUCK TO BOTH TEAMS. PLAY HARD & SAFE!

41st Annual Don Raabe Charities Classic Raabe Classic scoring (Continued from Page 2)

Era photo by Wade Aiken Shown are several of the homecoming queens who will be in attendance at tonight’s Raabe Classic. In the front row from left are Alex Caton (Cameron County), Angela DeAngelo (Ridgway) and Krista Miller (Port Allegany). In the back are Julia Greenman (Smethport), Daysha Eckerd (Coudersport), Chelsea Shelander (Otto-Eldred) and Jordan Wilson (Sheffield). Missing at the time of the picture were Emma Daghir (Elk County Catholic), Michaela Pierce (Ellicottville), Paige Martonik (Johnsonburg), Elizabeth Tunall (Kane) and Ericka Carnahan (Randolph).

Gray jumped at chance to coach in Raabe Classic (Continued from Page 3) want to be a distraction. This game is about giving to charities and the kids. It wasn’t about me.” Now, two years later, the Raabe Classic committee went back to Frewsburg for a New York coaching staff and Gray once again jumped at the chance. “I’m also the athletic director and I teach driver’s ed so I’m pretty busy,” he explained. “First I had to see if my wife was on board with it and then if I had a coaching staff. They were all for it and I really wanted to be part of the game, especially after two years ago.” Gray said the New York all-stars showed up in shape when practice started July 17. “We handed out playbooks on media day and told our kids that their job over the summer was to come into camp in shape. We didn’t want to spend a lot of time on conditioning drills when we could be practicing. They looked good when they showed up,” said Gray. Gray noted that it didn’t take long for his players to jell as a team. “It’s important for a team to bond and we spend time on that every day,” he stated.

That’s allowed the staff to put all its offense in and prepare the defense as well. “Our offense is fully installed after one week of practice and defensively we’ve just had to convert some kids over to defensive backs. We’re really close to all of the kids knowing their jobs,” he pointed out. On the other side of the state line, Otto-Eldred head coach Virgil Graham has been pleased with his team’s practices. “I’ve been very pleased and surprised at how quickly the kids have picked up our offense,” Graham said. “They’ve been really efficient and productive the past few days.” This is Graham’s first opportunity to coach in the game and he admits being a bit overwhelmed when he was first approached by the Raabe Classic Committee. “It’s a huge honor, but then there was a sense of being overwhelmed,” he explained. “I needed a little time to think about it and make sure I had assistant coaches. When that was set I called back and took it. “We have great kids with great attitudes. They are athletes who want to be here and are happy to be part of the game. “That makes it easy to coach when you have a group like that,” he added.
