CHOOSING THE RIGHT HEARING AID Hearing aid choice is a challenging and important decision. Choosing a hearing aid can be a complex process. Because your hearing is so important - and because hearing aids are expensive - you want to make sur e you get the right one.

What to consider

What hearing aid is best for you depends a lot on the type and severity of hearing loss that you have. Before going shopping for a hearing aid, there are some factors that you should consider. SEE AN AUDIOLOGIST An audiologist is a professional who can help you choose the right hearing aid and be sure that everything fits and is well adjusted. Ask your doctor for a referral to an audiologist. A good audiologist should not sell only one brand of hearing aid or be doing any other sales tricks - he or she should be focused on finding the best hearing aid for your situation. LOOKS For some people, looks are very important. There are types of hearing aids that are nearly invisible and others that match your skin color. These options may cost more, but if looks are important, there are many alternatives for you. OPERATION Hearing aids can be tiny. People with vision difficulties or difficulty handling small objects may not want the smallest hearing aid available. Changing batteries may be impossible for them.

TRIAL PERIOD Some companies offer a “test drive” for a hearing aid. This is a good idea. You need some time to know if the hearing aid is going to meet all your needs. Be sure to check if the company charges for the “test drive.” COST What will your health insurance company pay? Will they cover all types of hearing aids? Hearing aids can cost several thousand dollars, so it is worth your time to make a few phone calls. COMPATIBILITY Some hearing aids are compatible with assistive hearing devices. Be sure to check about compatibility if you use a telephone amplifier or other device. SERVICE Be sure you understand the warranty being offered with a hearing aid - for both the hearing aid and the battery. Where can you get new batteries? Who pays for repairs? Where can you get the hearing aid repaired? What if you have a question? How long does the warranty last? Will they send you a temporary hearing aid while yours is being repaired?

Hearing aids are available in more styles and sizes than ever before; thanks to miniaturization of e lectronics and a new focus in the hearing industry on style and design. Now, more and more people can wear tiny, ne arly invisible models or sleek styles that are much less conspicuous than the latest Bluetooth® headsets.

In-the-Ear Styles

Hearing aids worn in the ear are usually custom-fit, based on a cast or impression of the ear. They’re available in different skin tones to camouflage with the outer ear. There are several styles, each of which is listed below, ranging from smallest to largest. • Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) - The smallest custom style, CIC instruments fit deeply and entirely within the ear canal. They fit mild to moderate hearing losses and offer high cosmetic appeal as they’re nearly invisible when worn. • In-the-Canal (ITC) - ITC instruments sit in the lower portion of the outer ear bowl, making them comfortable and easy to use. Because they’re slightly larger than CIC models; they have a longer battery life and can host additional features, such as directional microphones for better understanding in noisy environments and controls, such as volume control. They fit mild and moderate hearing losses. • Half Shell (HS) - Half shell models fill half the bowl of the outer ear. Like ITC models, their size enables the addition of features such as directional microphones, volume controls and push buttons to activate special settings for different listening environments. Because of their size, they may be easier than smaller models to handle for some people and yet are still often disguised by hairstyles or sideburns. This hearing aid style looks similar to the ITC hearing aid when worn on the ear, but is slightly larger. • Full Shell or In-the-Ear (ITE) - Full shell models sit flush within the outer ear bowl. Their size allows the maximum number of additional controls and features such as directional microphones, which require space on the outer portion of the instrument. They use a larger battery size than the smaller styles and can fit a larger receiver with enough power for even some severe hearing losses. Because of their flexibility, they’re widely recommended for mild to severe hearing loss.

Behind-the-Ear Styles Behind-the-Ear (BTE) models sit behind or on top of the outer ear, with tubing that routes sounds down into the ear that connects to an ear tip or earmold to secure them in the ear canal. BTEs come in colors to blend with hair or skin tones and even chrome colors, leopard print and other funky designs to suit personal styles. Different BTE sizes accommodate different features, controls, battery types and degrees of power (larger instruments generally have more power than smaller ones). While many people choose discreet BTEs that are unnoticeable when worn, others are tempted to show off the cool designs. • Mini BTE with slim tube and tip - Mini BTEs are designed to hide behind the outer ear and have ultra-thin tubing to discreetly route sound into the ear. The tubing connects to a soft tip that sits in the ear canal, but doesn’t occlude it. The result is a natural, open feeling as airflow and sound enter the ear naturally around the tip, while amplified sound enters through the tip. This is known as “open fitting” and is recommended for mild to moderate high frequency losses. • Receiver-in-the-Ear (RITE) - RITE models, also known as RIC (receiver-incanal) models, are mini BTEs that have the speaker of the instrument incorporated in the ear tip, instead of in the main body of the instrument. RITE instruments fit mild to severe hearing losses. This hearing aid style looks similar to the Mini BTE when worn on the ear. • BTE with earmold - BTEs with earmolds fit mild through profound hearing losses. They’re longer shape, following the contour behind the outer ear, generally can house more features, controls, and power than custom models. The earmold color and style, as well as the wearer’s hairstyle, determine exactly how they’ll look on each person.

HOW TO CHOOSE A Pharmacies have changed a lot over the years. In the past, pharmacies were usually small neighborhood stores where the employees knew your name. The selection might not have been the best, but the customer service they provided was always excellent. These days, pharmacies have grown. In many cases, they have turned into large, corporate stores. With their expansion in size has also come an expansion in the type of products they carry. No longer selling only medicine or medical related supplies, these pharmacies have turned into small retailers. Along with pharmaceutical goods, many of these stores also carry a variety of groceries, in the hope of creating for its customers a one-stop place to shop. Unfortunately, not every pharmacy has kept its focus on its customers. As pharmacies have changed, it has become more important than ever to sift out the good pharmacies from the bad. When deciding on which pharmacy you want servicing your prescription needs, there are several important factors to consider.

AVAILABILITY One of the factors to consider is the pharmacy’s hours of operation. Stores that are only open during regular business hours will not be very helpful if you or your loved one gets sick after hours. Try finding a pharmacy with business hours that are convenient for you. If you look hard enough, you are sure to find a pharmacy in your city that is open 24 hours. Unfortunately, it is the larger corporate chain stores that are likely to be the ones open late. Smaller, locally owned pharmacies may have more limited hours, but tend to provide more personalized service than the larger stores. Regardless of the pharmacy you choose, it is always a good idea to know where a 24-hour pharmacy is located in case of a late-night emergency.

SERVICE A pharmacy’s location is just as important as its hours of operation. Using a pharmacy that is close to your house is not only convenient, but makes purchasing your pharmaceutical needs much easier. You may even be able to find a store that is on your way home from work or school, allowing you to quickly and easily stop and pick up your medication on your way home. It is also useful to have a pharmacy that is only a few minutes away, in case someone in your family becomes sick in the middle of the night.

DRUG COVERAGE One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a pharmacy is whether they accept your prescription drug plan, since not every pharmacy accepts every kind of insurance. If you have insurance that covers prescription drug costs, it is a good idea to call ahead to make sure they take the type of insurance you carry. Even if the pharmacy has convenient hours and is conveniently located, these advantages mean nothing if you are going to have to pay out of pocket. For people whose insurance offers little to no prescription coverage, it is smart to contact the stores in your area and ask about their policies regarding prescription discounts. Many pharmacies are now offering lower prices on various generic versions of medications, some of which may be medications that you take. By using a pharmacy that offers prescription drug discounts, you can save a good deal of money. Older patients who are on Medicare should be also careful when deciding on a pharmacy. Check with potential pharmacies in your area to see if they accept your specific Medicare Part D plan. As there are many options available on Medicare Part D plans, it is vital to make sure the pharmacy you select is willing to work with your Medicare plan in order to cover the medications you need.

LOCATION One last thing to consider when picking a pharmacy is the customer service they offer. As previously mentioned, smaller neighborhood pharmacies are quickly becoming replaced by larger corporate owned pharmacies, so it is important to find a store where you feel at home. Do the pharmacists and staff remember your name? Does the pharmacist take the time to answer any questions you might have about your medication? Finding a pharmacy staff that is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly can go a long way. While it may not be easy to find a pharmacy that meets each of these criteria, with a little research you should be able to find one that fits your needs.

How to Choose A Primary Care Provider Imagine a “one-stop shop” for all of your healthcare needs where your primary care provider (PCP)-- your doctor, physician assistant or nurse practitioner is your trusted long-term partner that coordinates care between the hospital, health agencies, specialists and other medical professionals in the future? Cole Memorial’s health network and its over 60 healthcare providers at ten community health centers in Potter, McKean, Cameron and Tioga counties is paving the way to becoming a “Medical Home” to over 60,000 residents in the communities that Cole Memorial serves. PCPs at the Cole Memorial network include: • • • •

Family practitioners who see patients of all ages Pediatricians that focus on care for newborns, infants, children and adolescents. Internists located at the CCMH Integrated Internal Medicine office and specialize in care for adults for various diseases and medical disorders Obstetricians/gynecologists (OB/Gyn) who serve women of all ages.

The team of primary care providers at Cole is committed to building ongoing relationships with patients to provide personalized health and wellness programs. In addition, the new electronic health records system at Cole Memorial allows the Medical Home model to evolve, allowing a patientís personal care physician to communicate and manage the process of electronic scheduling, patient registries for chronic disease management, increase patient education and empower the patient to be engaged in improving his or her health. Ed Pitchford, president and CEO of Cole Memorial said, “When you receive a regular checkup, attend an appointment with your Cole primary care provider or come to our Express Care office, a team will proactively handle that visit. In the future, a Care Coordinator may follow-up between and after office visits to remind you of any testing or screenings, provide health education, review healthcare goals, answer your questions and offer steps to improve your health outcomes.” That’s why it’s important to consider the following when choosing a PCP: • • • • •

Is the office staff friendly and helpful? Is the office good about returning calls? Are the office hours convenient to your schedule? Do you prefer a provider whose communication style is friendly and warm, or more formal? Would you prefer a provider that also focuses on wellness and prevention? Does the provider invite you to be involved in your care? Does the provider view your patient-doctor relationship as a true partnership?

How To Choose A Hotel There are many reasons why you might need to choose a hotel. One reason you may need a hotel is for a family vacation. Another reason for seeking out hotel accommodations is a business trip. Perhaps you are in between homes and you need a temporary place to stay. No matter what the reason is that you need to choose a hotel, you must be very careful in your decision making process. You want to choose a hotel that has a perfect mix of cleanliness, benefits and superior customer service. If you follow the following guidelines, you will never go wrong choosing your hotel: 1. Conduct a Search The first thing you want to do before choosing a hotel is conduct an online search for all establishments that are in close proximity to where you will be. For example, if you have a business meeting in city xyz, you will want your hotel to be in city xyz as close to the meeting as possible. There will be several results online. Choose the top five closest hotels. This will ensure that you do not have to drive far to reach your destination when the time comes. 2. Compare the Benefits Your main job is to find the most accommodating hotel you can locate. Visit the web pages of the five hotels you have chosen and research the features and benefits. Every hotel has things that they give their customers. Some establishments offer free access to a fitness center. Other locations may offer a continental breakfast in the morning. Other things that are good to look for are free services such as Wi-Fi access, cable television, microwaves, refrigerators and gaming consoles. 3. Compare Prices Price can play a huge part in where you spend your time. Research a few of the locations to see which ones offer their services for the least amount of money. Check to see if you can find any more discounts on rooms at these locations. Certain hotels and resorts offer discounts to people who have AAA memberships. Your employer may also have a deal with certain hotels. Check to see if working for your currently employer can benefit you in any way. Use this information in the decision making process. 4. Read Between the Lines Customer reviews are one of the most important tools you will use to help you decide on a specific location. No matter what establishments you are considering doing service with, let the reviews help you to decide if you will spend your money to stay at a certain place. The customer reviews will let you know how each hotel ranks with users. Reviews will also be able to answer any questions you my have about the friendliness of the staff. They will also notify you of what condition the hotel is in. Customers are not afraid so say when they have had a negative experience with a business. Take each customer comment very seriously because each one could be a prediction of how the hotel staff will treat you. If you see a significant amount of negative comment, you might want to remove such an establishment from your list, but you should also take all Internet reviews with a grain of salt. 5. Pick and Choose The final step in the section process is picking out the top two hotels. You will decide which one is the best out of those two. Visit them if you like, so that you can get a feel for the new environment. Ask questions of the concierge and hotel staff. When you have taken all of the necessary steps, it will be time for you to pick your hotel. Hopefully from there will be able to enjoy your stay. After all, choosing the right hotel is very important in your happiness while you are away from home.

How to Choose Auto & Truck Accessories So you bought a new vehicle and are thinking about adding some performance or exterior modifications to make it suit your tastes. Where do you start? Will they void your warranty? Will you hurt resale value? Where should you buy them from? Let’s see if we can help. First things first, any modification that you do to your vehicle you have to write off as money spent to make you happy, period. It is extremely difficult to get your money back you spent on customizing a vehicle. If you are selling it yourself you might be able to get a little extra above the book value, but that’s about it. If you are trading it in, you will still only get trade in value. Usually a vehicle with tasteful modifications will be the difference between a potential buyer waffling and trying to beat you down on price and just saying ok to your asking price because they really like how it looks or performs. Unless you are a professional dealer who buys and sells vehicles every day, please look at any upgrades you do to your vehicle as money spent to make you enjoy your vehicle more instead of an investment. If you are thinking about modifying a newer vehicle that is under warranty, you have to be extremely careful that you do not void that warranty. Every manufacturer and dealer has different policies about what is acceptable. Finding this out first can be as easy as a trip to your service manager and explaining what you want to do. They will usually tell you up front whether your factory warranty will be affected. Also, most dealers are more accepting of modifications that are installed by a professional shop or dealers themselves. More often than not, inexperience will cause a do it yourself job to damage other parts of the vehicle and the dealer has no choice but to void the warranty. It’s best to have a good working relationship with the dealership you bought the vehicle from and let them guide you on what they deem acceptable. If you are under warranty, what can you do to personalize your vehicle? Nearly anything in the way of exterior bolt ons will not cause you any trouble. Running boards, tonneau covers, brush guards, spoilers, window tint, vent visors, and other items that are made specifically for the vehicle will cause no problems. These products do not require modification of the factory systems and simply bolt on. Any exhaust system or cold air intake system that is properly installed and does not affect the emissions systems is also ok. Lift kits, suspension modifications, wheels, and tires fall into a different category. If you modify the factory suspension, usually they will void the warranty on just the suspension. If you go crazy and turn your truck into the next Bigfoot, expect the entire warranty to be voided. Again, your dealership can guide you on what is acceptable if you want to raise your truck a little without affecting the warranty. Also, nearly any towing or work related modification is usually ok. If you need to add a trailer hitch, air bags, ladder rack, or tool box you will not have any trouble as long as the products are installed properly and no modification to the vehicles frame or other hard parts are made. Next question, where do you buy these parts from? There are multiple sources and no one place is the best for everyone. The internet has equaled the pricing on most items, but there are a few variations. There are three basic places to aftermarket accessories can be purchased from: regular auto parts, online/catalog retailers, and specialty shops. They all have their pros and cons. The regular auto parts store in your hometown can probably set you up with most anything you are looking for. It’s nice to have the same guy you trust to select your brakes and steering components help you with accessories. While they usually do a good job, their prices are a little higher than you can find the same item elsewhere. Also, most regular auto parts stores are really good at selling regular parts. When it comes time for installation, they do not have the experience with installation to guide you through more technical installs. They are a great choice for simple items like bug shields and floor mats. The internet has changed the auto parts industry forever. Since nearly anyone can jump online and find any product they want for a fair price and have that product delivered to their door within a few days. Online and catalog shopping is great for the do it yourselfer. They can take their time and select the products they want and usually get a better price than they could going to a local auto parts. Unfortunately many run into two problems. First, if they use a large aftermarket retailer they get great prices and quick service but do not get great installation or selection advice because companies that size have a hard time finding really good sales people. They are usually just order takers at best. The second problem is a growing number of online retailers are very small operations. While their price may be incredible, they are nearly impossible to get in touch with if you have any issue or problem. Returns are usually a hassle and most of them have no phone number you can call for support. What you save in price you trade off in customer service. The last channel is your local specialty shop. A specialty shop or speed shop’s only business is to sell and/or install aftermarket accessories. Usually these shops are well versed in aftermarket products and can help you select items that fit your goals and pocketbook. They are much easier to deal with if products don’t fit or work right. Look for a shop that has an installation facility. While it might cost you a little more for labor to have the part installed, it will usually be done professionally. Also, any shop worth their salt will be able to match most online pricing. Don’t be afraid to ask them to. Be careful here though. Lots of small shops pop up all the time who are not professional and are usually out of business within a year. Check to see if they are authorized dealers for the products you are looking for. When a manufacturer places authorized dealer status on a shop it means they have checked them out and the shop meets their high standards for sales staff knowledge and clean, professional installation facilities. Also check out their prior work. Any good shop is proud to show off their past work. Modifying a vehicle for show, work, or performance can be very rewarding. Just make sure you have a clear goal in mind when starting your project. A well thought out build will net you years of enjoyment and save you money in the long run.

How to Choose a Vascular Specialist to Care for your Vein & Vascular Problems People often are told “you need to see a vascular surgeon” or “you need to see a vein doctor” by either their primary doctor or friends and/or family. The problem is often trying to figure out just which physician they can see that will provide them with the most accurate diagnosis, the most optimal treatment or treatments, and the best follow-up. Nowadays, it seems that there are a multitude of options, locations, and physicians to choose from, and it can be confusing to figure out which direction you are best served in pursuing. As a general rule, if your problem involves either your veins or arteries, you are usually best served being evaluated by a vascular surgeon. Only vascular surgeons are able to offer the full spectrum of endovascular and open treatment options, and usually vascular surgeons have the most experience making proper diagnostic and treatment decisions about your problem. Unlike other specialties that may include vascular care as a part of a larger field, vascular surgeons evaluate and treat essentially only disorders of the blood vessels. Here are some of the key items to check when choosing a vascular surgeon: • Does he or she belong to the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS)? The SVS elects only full time qualified vascular surgeons to their membership. The selection process is rigorous and includes review of the vascular surgeon’s caseload and case numbers, their outcomes, their training and experience, requires recommendations by other qualified vascular surgeons, a review by the Membership Committee and finally election to the society. Surgeons belonging to the SVS are highly vetted and highly qualified individuals and this is a mark of distinction in the field. The SVS website www.vascularweb.org has a search engine that will allow you to find qualified surgeons in your area. • If the physician is billed as a venous specialist, do they belong to the American Venous Forum (AVF)? The AVF is the premier professional organization dedicated to the advancement of venous disease. Much like the SVS, there is a vetting process to ensure that only qualified physicians with a full time interest and practice in venous disorders are elected. The AVF website www.veinforum.org/patients has a similar search function which will give you the top venous physicians in your geographic area that can help you with your problem. • How many years has the vascular surgeon been practicing in your area and how experienced are they with the problem you have and the proposed treatments they are offering? Do they teach, lecture, or have they been published in the specialty area in question? • Do they perform both open and endovascular arterial procedures? Vascular Surgery has changed markedly over the last decade and it is essential that your vascular surgeon is able to choose the best approach for your disease process. Today’s vascular surgeon must be comfortable and proficient in catheter based endovascular approaches which make up a majority of the procedures now performed. However, they must be able to use open surgical

techniques (i.e. make an incision) if needed since not everything can be approached with catheter based therapy and sometimes it is limb or lifesaving to change from an endovascular to open approach in some selected cases. • Do they provide the full spectrum of vein care or only perform ablations and cosmetic work? While venous ablations provide significant benefit to patients, the true venous specialists should also treat and evaluate deep vein thrombosis (DVT) , iliocaval venous occlusive disease and pulmonary embolism. They should be proficient in the full spectrum of thrombolysis and stenting, as well as the conservative management of both superficial and deep vein disease as these are all linked together and inseparable. Simply doing superficial ablations or injections is not adequate nor comprehensive care for vein patients. • Does the physician have in-office diagnostics performed by qualified technologists? While more is not always better, a credible vascular surgeon should have full time in-office vascular ultrasound performed by full-time Registered Vascular Technologists (RVTs) as a bare minimum- particularly if they are doing any type of in-office venous or arterial procedures. This should include the ability to perform arterial color duplex studies and physiologic studies, as well as venous reflux and DVT studies. An office that has a tech come in once or twice a week is clearly not as well prepared for all contingencies as an office with on-site services full-time. • Does the physician do procedures in his or her office and if so what types? Is their facility large enough and well equipped enough for the procedures being offered? Is there adequate staffing (see vascular ultrasound above). An office based angiography lab (OBL) is both a plus and an indicator as there are very few “casual” vascular surgeons willing to make that level of investment in equipment and personnel. If the vascular surgeon you are considering meets all of the above criteria then you can be comfortable that he or she is going to be in the position to best diagnose and treat your individual problem. If not, you might want to check one or more of the websites listed above and see what other more qualified alternatives may be available. Remember, the choice is ultimately yours whether you have selected the physician or you are being referred to them! If you are being referred to a physician for vascular or vein problems, you can and should ask your doctor if the the person they are referring you or your family member to can meet these marks. True vascular specialists will usually be vascular surgeons, and most qualified vascular surgeons will meet most if not all of the above criteria.

HOW TO CHOOSE AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP

Some things to keep in mind when searching for an auto repair shop:

No one likes to think about needing an auto repair shop, but selecting a good one is like having health insurance: you hope you never need it, but you have it “just in case.”

• The Better Business Bureau can help you determine whether the repair shop’s performance and reliability measure up to the industry standards for expertise and professionalism.

When it comes to cars, all vehicles will require repairs or service eventually. You could even say that three things in life are certain: death, taxes and car repairs. Having an existing relationship with an auto repair shop will save time and hassle when your car needs an immediate repair. If you’re not sure how to build a good working relationship with a shop, try taking your car in for regular tune-ups and maintenance; a well-cared-for car will run longer and more smoothly, as well as incur lower operating and service costs.

• Less than 40 percent of new auto shop customers are walk-ins. Most people are referred by friends, relatives, or co-workers. If you haven’t received any recommendations, make sure you ask your prospective auto shop for references.

• If you travel often, look for an auto repair shop that offers a national warranty. For instance, a warranty of 12,000 miles or 12 months is handy for repetitive issues. • Check the shop’s range of services and whether the shop has the latest technologies to properly diagnose problems with newer cars. For example, can your prospective shop handle brake systems, electrical components, and warranty repairs? Do they provide a loaner, rental car, or shuttle service while your car is being repaired? • Look for a good customer satisfaction policy, good condition equipment and lighting, and cleanliness and organization. These factors all contribute to the level of professionalism, gaining customers’ trust, and to optimal service. • Look for brand-names and proper certification. Does the auto repair shop uses brand-name parts? These parts are engineered to meet the manufacturer’s specifications and will likely come with a warranty. Are the auto technicians certified by a specific car manufacturer, the National Institute for Automotive Services, or Automotive Science Excellence? Is the shop approved by the American Automobile Association? If so, this indicates a customer approval rating of 90% or better and the ability to adequately perform the services they advertise. • Whether you are considering a big name franchise or an independently owned shop, compare the usual services and fees of each shop to familiarize yourself with average price ranges. Don’t select a shop based purely on lower prices; shoddy service or poor quality parts can mean more repairs and higher costs in the long run. After you’ve chosen a facility, try to establish a good working relationship with the mechanic. Since your car needs preventive maintenance anyway, take it to your new mechanic for a trial run such as an oil change or air conditioning check. Some services may be offered free of charge; these can provide you with a good idea of the service you will receive.

Girl’s Night Out to welcome guest speaker Nicole Johnson This year’s hotly anticipated Girl’s Night Out is set for Oct. 2. The annual event will feature dinn er, music, health screenings, door prizes and a silent handbag auction, as well as guest speaker Nicole Johnson, author of “Fresh Brewed Life. ” Nicole carries a message of hope for women, encouraging them to break away from the daily grind in order to live their lives with mor e intention and a deeper sense of community. We asked Nicole to share a few thoughts in anticipation of her appearance.

What is the philosophy expressed in “Fresh Brewed Life”?

“Fresh Brewed Life” is a philosophy more than a title or something catchy simply because I believe that coffee symbolizes much of what we long for in life. When somebody invites you for coffee, it isn’t because they’re thirsty, it’s because they want to sit and connect and talk with you. It transcends being a beverage. It’s really an invitation to experience relationship or friendship.

What are some specific challenges women in the workplace face?

You only balance things that are equal. And so when you have a work life and a family and then frien ds, you’re always going to struggle a little bit to find an equilibrium. Sometimes it’s a little heavier on the work side and then sometimes it’s a little heavier on the family or the personal side but even in the midst of that tension, the goal is to be really present where we are, wholeheartedly and fully engaged.

How do those challenges affect women’s health and why is health such an important part of living a f ull life?

We don’t just carry stress like a suitcase outside of us; it’s in our bodies, it’s in our minds, it’s in our hearts, our spirits, and our emotions. A lot of times women don’t dig into what that stress is and they just live in it all the time. That’s going to come out, so when our bodies start to have reactions, it’s time to say, “Okay what’s really happening in my body as a result of what I’m doing and what I’m thinking and what I’m carrying?”

How can women break out of that daily grind in order to really, fully live?

The answer is twofold: it’s emotional health and physical health. People often focus on one or the other. I’m living here in Southern California. I have some friends and people I know they really are obsessed with physical fitness. They wouldn’t put gluten in their mouths if you tied them to a post and tried to force feed them a pancake, but when you talk about their relationships, there’s no focus there. Their emotional health goes unexamined. Or there are people I know that are, emotionally, fairly healthy. They pour a lot into their kids, into their relationships and families and as a result, there’s just no time to go to the doctor or get the checkup or have the mammogram, and that’s just as dangerous.

You focus a lot on building community among women in their day-to-day lives. What can women do to fo ster that?

I think events like Girl’s Night Out are great because when you look across the table and you’ve heard a message together, you have a new language. Another way is just walking together. It’s amazing what comes out when you’re walking because you just start talking and then all of a sudden you’re really talking about what is heaviest in your life or what you’re thinking about the most.

Why are you excited about coming to Girl’s Night Out and what do you hope women take away from the n ight?

I’m excited because I get to speak to a group of women about all the things that keep us running; not to keep us on the hamster wheel but to consider in which ways we are operating healthfully and intentionally, and which upon ways we can improve. The second thing I love is when you get a group of women together, we really get a sense that we’re not alone in our struggles; that someone else is walking through something similar. It’s through our connection with each other that we can be more a uthentic, more of our true selves, and take care of ourselves and the things that matter to us. Any time we can spend doing that is so valuable and I love being a part of it.

How to Find a Hobby While it feels like we never have enough, at least everyone has some free time. You probably already have a hobby or two, whether you know it or not, but exploring new ones can give you a fun new experience and open up how you view yourself and your life. The important thing is to remember to just focus on being happy: don’t let fear and doubt get in the way of trying new things. A little risk and adventure makes life most interesting.

T hink abo ut wh at y o u va lue mo st . The things that are most important to you can help you identify possible hobbies. Look at your bank statements. How do you spend your money? If you were stuck on a desert island, what would be your most prized possession? Questions like these can reveal what makes you happiest, and that thing can be pursued and turned into a hobby.

E valua t e y our c ur re nt ho bb ie s . You can find new hobbies that draw on similar activities as your current hobbies. If you can figure out what it is that you like about the hobbies you have now, you can find other activities that make you feel the same way. This is especially useful if you can’t do your old hobby anymore (such as if it is too expensive).

G o b ac k t o y o ur ch ild ho od . Think back to your childhood. Remember the things you enjoyed doing as a child. Many of these things can be developed into something you can enjoy as an adult, giving you a great new hobby. •For example, maybe as a child you loved playing with cars and trains. Now you can go to Dreamboat and build plastic models, radio control planes and cars, or electric trains as a hobby

Lo ok at h ow y ou t alk. The way that you talk about things can also reveal your passions and those passions can be developed into a hobby. Think about the things you can’t shut up about. Ask your friends and family what you seem to talk about the most. Now, think about what it is about that thing that you enjoy so much and how it can be transformed into a hobby. • For example, maybe you find yourself rambling about politics all the time. Now, you can turn that into a hobby. Try the many shops at Dreamboat such as the Kayak Shop, Boat Shop, or Boy Scout Shop.

B e w illing t o w ast e t ime . Some people are reluctant to try new things because they’re afraid of failure. What if it doesn’t work out and you waste all that time an money? This is not a healthy way to think. You can’t gain very much without being willing to invest. Trying new hobbies and experiences is not really wasting time or money. It’s an investment you make in your happiness and that’s always worthwhile.

Fin d c alming ho bb ie s. Calming hobbies are great for quiet people and people with way too much stress in their lives. These hobbies let you do activities which relieve stress. By being quiet and low key, they also don’t create any new stress. Dreamboat offers a Yarn Shop with a huge selection to choose from.

Tips

• Before you get involved starting your hobby, find a place to work on it, and to store it if done indoors. Even outdoors hobbies that need equipment will require storage space • Make sure you hobby will not take away the time you need to spend with your family and friends. • Pick an indoor hobby and an outdoor hobby to keep things interesting. • Try a hobby with a friend. •Try to find something that you’re usually good at! • Once you pursue a hobby for any length of time, you’ll get good at it. Often you may reach a point where it can pay for itself such as selling art or crafts, teaching others or displaying it for admission in the case of very extensive railroad setups. This is a good way to keep costs down.

HOW TO CHOOSE A WOOD OR PELLET STOVE Wood and pellet stoves are effective and efficient alternatives to gas, oil or electricity for heat during cold weather. Each type of stove has benefits to offer as an alternative heat source, but selecting the right one for your home requires some careful consideration.

WOOD STOVES

PELLET STOVES

Wood stoves are fabricated from either cast iron or welded steel. Both are made to burn wood and then distribute the heat through your home using a system of pipes. The choice of metal has no influence on the stove’s operation or performance. People choose either a steel stove or a cast iron one based on price, where the stove will be located and how it fits into a home’s décor. Wood stoves work due to basic combustion. The wood burns and produces heat, ashes and smoke. Heat is good and ashes we clear away periodically and discard. Smoke is a product of incomplete combustion. A stove outfitted with a catalytic converter makes use of the leftover combustibles, reducing emissions and boosting the efficiency of the stove. A properly designed stove without a catalytic converter can still be efficient enough to burn wood completely, leaving little ash and smoke behind. There are pros and cons to both types that affect the operation of the stove. The most efficient wood stoves have a proficiency rating between 60 and 80 percent. Unfortunately, these ratings are not standardized and not often understood by the average person. There’s a lot of room for doubt. Buy your stove from a reputable dealer who will give you straight answers to your questions and who will make sure you understand what you’re purchasing. You can do some preliminary work by calculating the cubic footage of the area you’re going to be heating with the stove. This determines the right size of stove to buy. Big rooms need bigger stoves, little rooms need smaller ones. That was easy. You’ll also want to know the size of the logs you’re going to be burning. Logs 16 inches in length are recommended because they’re easy to stack and handle. The log capacity of your stove should be about three inches longer, or 19 inches. Cheap wood stoves aren’t really a bargain in the long run. Their internal parts may wear out quickly and aren’t replaceable. Better stoves will be made of better materials and are covered by a warranty. Understand the terms of your stove’s warranty before you complete your purchase.

A pellet stove works on the same principle as a traditional wood stove. However, these stoves can burn other fuels besides wood, such as sawdust, waste paper, wood chips, bark and other organic materials compacted into a pellet. Some can also burn corn and walnut shells. Pellet stoves have been proven by the EPA to be the cleanest solid-fuel burning appliances. They are often suitable for apartments and condominiums when wood stoves are not. They are also exempt from EPA emissions standards. Pellet burning stoves come in two types: freestanding and fireplace inserts. They all have a feeder attachment and a hopper to feed the pellets into the stove. Newer pellet stoves have thermostats and sensors to regulate the speed the pellets are being fed into the stove, controlling the heat output and regulating the temperature. Pellet stove manufacturers provide very specific schedules for product maintenance which helps the stove deliver more efficient home heating. Due to the increasing popularity of pellet stoves as an alternative source of heat, both stoves and the pellets are easy to find. Manufacturers recommend using high-quality pellets to keep your stove burning cleaner and needing fewer repairs. Like the wood stove, a pellet stove should be chosen based on the size of the home or room it is expected to heat, its efficiency and its appearance. Whether you choose a more traditional wood stove or select a pellet stove, either will prove to be a more efficient and cost-effective heat source than electricity, natural gas, propane or heating oil. Wood and pellet stoves involved a major outlay of cash. Both should be installed by a professional. This will also cost money. However, you’ll soon recover these costs from the money you save on utility bills, and you’ll keep on saving in the years to come.

How to Choose a Wrecker Service

The last thing anyone wants is to be stranded late at night with a broken down car. What makes things worse is not having a trusted wrecker service to call for help. That’s why it’s so important to choose one or two towing services in your area ahead of time — just in case you need them. Knowing that you can count on a professional with a good reputation will give you valuable peace of mind and save you time and trouble. But how do you choose a good wrecker service? Here are a few points to think about.

Some of the best people to ask for suggestions are the local police, your insurance agent, or your mechanic. These folks deal with wrecker services all the time, and they’ll be able to tell you who they use and why. In their wide range of experiences, they’ve probably seen a lot of companies and could provide a few tips on where to find excellent service at a fair price. Be aware, though, that some recommendations might be paid referrals rather than true endorsements. For instance, a mechanic may steer you toward a towing company that they own or that pays them for sending customers. To avoid falling into this situation, try to obtain several recommendations to compare.

Ask around Family, friends and co-workers are another excellent resource for finding a good towing service. Find out which services they’ve used in the past and whether they would use them again. Ask for details: did the service arrive promptly? Was the price reasonable? Did they handle the car carefully during transport? Did the driver behave professionally?

Look for longevity It’s pretty easy to start a company that tows vehicles, but not every company is fully qualified and has staying power. Look for a company that is licensed properly, carries the appropriate insurance, and trains their employees thoroughly. Even better, search for a company who has also been in business in your community for a long time. After all, a wrecker company can only stay in business long-term if they keep customers happy and perform excellent work.

Get price quotes Obtain price quotes from several different companies to see what they usually charge and to compare rates. The prices quoted will depend on a number of factors such as type of vehicle you drive, how far it needs to be towed, and maybe even the time of day it will be towed. Ask each company how they calculate their rates so you’ll know up-front what your cost will be.As with most services, be wary of low-ball pricing. These companies may have hidden fees, inexperienced employees or shoddy equipment or service.Once you’ve identified a good wrecker service, be sure to keep their name and phone number in your vehicle’s glove box. This eliminates searching frantically for their number when you’re already anxious and worried about a broken-down car. Taking a few extra steps now will go a long way toward giving you peace of mind. Hopefully you’ll never need to call a towing company, but when it comes to safety, it’s often better to be over-prepared than to be caught by surprise.

How to Choose an Auto Body Shop As a large majority of the general public drives an automobile, it is important to have certain resources on hand which relate to the car. Things such as insurance companies, auto dealers and automotive parts stores are all important businesses to have close by should an individual need their assistance. However, perhaps the most important business contact an individual should have is an auto body shop. As a good auto body shop is important for your car repairs and pocketbook there are a few ways an individual should go about selecting the best auto body shop in their area.

Prescise • Prompt • Convenient

Consider Recommendations

Since many individuals use auto body shops, it is highly likely that one will know someone else who has also used a local auto body shop. As a result, asking for recommendations from friends and family members is a great way to select the perfect auto body shop. There are a few different reasons why considering recommendations is a good step to take prior to settling on a particular body shop. First, friends and family members will be able to state whether they have had a favorable experience with a particular auto body shop or not. Not only will they be able to comment on the overall cost of services but how the staff handled their automobile situation as well. This is a great point of reference when you are trying to find a shop that does good body work while charging a fair price. Another reason to consider asking for recommendations from friends and family members with regard to choosing an auto body shop is to make sure that the company you are considering dealing with will treat the customer in an honest and fair manner. As any individual who has to put their car in the shop wants it to go as smoothly as possible, asking for recommendations with regard to auto body shops will help because you will be able to find a good shop with reasonable prices.

Have an Auto Body Shop Picked Out Before it is Necessary to Use One

Because an inoperative car, due to an accident or otherwise, is already a stressful situation, one does not want to face any additional stress by having to find an auto body shop to fix their car at the last minute. For this reason, it is a good idea to have an auto body shop picked out before one even needs the assistance of one. This is also beneficial as the individual can check out the shop beforehand and ask questions of the staff, such as do they offer towing to their facility, for example, and receive answers to other important questions.

Warranties

Another factor to consider when wondering how to choose an auto body shop is whether or not the auto body shop offers warranty on any of its parts or services. Since warranties are frequently offered in auto body shops, if one shop doesnʼt offer many warranties or any warranties at all, then that prospective customer may very well wish to keep looking for an auto body shop that does offer warranties on its parts and/or services. When a shop offers warranties it makes the customer feel as if the shop is confident in their work and will do a good job.

Payment Accepted

Another factor which may be a determining one when choosing an auto body shop is what types of payment the shop accepts for auto body repair. If the auto body shop only accepts cash and checks in limited instances which must be paid up front, then perhaps considering another auto body shop which accepts many different forms of payment, such as a variety of credit cards, may be the best bet. In addition, auto body shops may sometimes offer installment plans which can work out well for those who are on a strict budget yet need to have their automobile repaired as soon as possible. Choosing the right auto body shop is a very important decision to make. By considering the previously mentioned tips when choosing an auto body shop, it may just help the individual choose the best possible one.

Getting Started with Ameriprise Financial

The first step in reaching your goals is reaching someone who can help get you there - one of our approximately 10,000 financial advisors. But if you have questions before you contact an advisor, that’s ok too. Explore what it’s like to work with Ameriprise Financial, from finding an advisor to preparing for meetings and what to expect from the financial planning process. We’ll help you every step of the way.

How to select a financial advisor

Choosing a financial advisor to work with may seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. You can contact us via phone or email before you schedule a meeting to ask a few questions. Or you can get to know the advisor during an initial consultation As you start your search, think about what type of financial help you’ll need and what kind of individual you’d like to work with. Consider asking your friends and family members for referrals, too. They’ll be able to tell you what they appreciate about their advisor before you contact them. In addition, following the suggestions below may help you find the right fit.

1. Find out about t he advi sor’ s background an d experi ence •

Ask the advisor why they chose their profession and what they enjoy about their career. How long has the financial advisor practiced? Have they helped clients with needs similar to yours?

If it’s important to you to choose a financial advisor with similar interests, ask about any hobbies, interests and associations.

Learn about any http://www.ameriprise.com/financial-planning/ameriprisefinancial-advisors/ameriprise-financial-advisor-credentials.asp the advisor has including any additional certifications. You can find this information on an Ameriprise financial advisor’s website or check online with organizations that monitor advisors or award credentials to measure qualifications, advanced degrees and experience. The http://www.cfp.net/ or http://www.fpanet.org/ are two you could start with.

2. Pay attention to how well the advisor listens to you In a preliminary conversation, an advisor should learn a little about you, your dreams and goals. After you meet, the advisor may ask more in-depth questions about your finances, financial objectives, goals and risk tolerance. You should feel that the advisor is interested in you and will be able to provide you with personalized financial planning and advice.

3. Ask the candidate the right questions as you choose a financial advisor •

Have you helped people with goals similar to mine? How will you help me plan for my goals? The answer may not be a one-time plan or quick fix solution. Generally, emphasizing a long-term strategy with incremental steps is a better way to help you move toward your goals. The advisor’s answers should also make you feel confident in his or her ability to understand and communicate the factors you need to consider.

What happens if my goals change? Your plan should be flexible enough to adjust to new needs and goals, a dynamic economy and your ownhttp:// www.ameriprise.com/retire/investment-advice-life-events/ — such as buying a new home, having a family, changing jobs or http:// www.ameriprise.com/retire/planning-for-retirement/

How do you help clients track their progress? How do you prefer to keep in touch? The advisor should be ready to help you measure your progress over time with regular meetings and check-ins as well as access to your account online. Find out how often you can expect to meet and how (in person, phone, email or teleconference for example) and what other tools or support the advisor provides.

What types of financial needs can you help me with? The advisor should be able to provide a full review of your entire financial situation, including cash flow, investments, taxes and insurance. They should be able to help you bridge the gap between your current situation and any short-

and long-term goals you identify.

4. Make your decision. Assess your conversation or meeting based on questions such as these: •

Has this advisor worked with people like me?

Am I satisfied with how often this advisor plans to contact me and by what method (in person, by phone, via email)?

Did the advisor seem genuinely interested in me, my family, my goals?

Do I feel comfortable with this advisor personally and professionally?
