Ways to improve bladder health Most people don’t pay much mind to their bladders unless they find themselves in need of a bathroom while on the road or out and about. Responsible for holding urine for the kidneys, the bladder can be vulnerable to various problems. However, certain lifestyle changes can help the bladder function the way it should. Bladder illnesses The American Society of Clinical Oncology reports an estimated 81,190 adults (62,380 men and 18,810 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with bladder cancer this year. Bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer among men, though it is not the only condition that can affect the bladder. Cystitis, which is an inflammation of the bladder, overactive bladder and urinary incontinence are some of the more common ailments that can affect the bladder. Cystitis is typically caused by a bacterial infection and could be accompanied by urinary tract infection. However, interstitial cystitis (IC) is an often painful bladder syndrome accompanied by the urgent need to urinate, states WebMD. Overactive bladder
is characterized by a sudden urge to urinate. Sometimes the urge can be difficult to control and involuntary loss of urine may occur, advises the Mayo Clinic. Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control. Severity can range from occasional leakage of urine to failure to making it to the toilet in time. The Urology Care Foundation says between one-quarter and one-third of men and women in the United States suffer from urinary incontinence. Maintaining bladder health Although not all bladder conditions can be avoided, there are many steps people can take to improve the health of their bladders and increase the likelihood of proper functionality. The following are some ways to do just that. • Drink enough fluids. Consuming plenty of water (six to eight 8-ounce glasses each day) can help flush contaminants out of the urinary system. • Void completely. Make sure to urinate completely and do not hold in urine for long periods of time. Urine that doesn’t escape can head back to the bladder and bring
bacteria with it. • Limit alcohol intake. Alcoholic beverages are diuretics and stimulants, which can produce symptoms of urinary urgency. • Eat adequate fiber. Constipation can put stress on pelvic floor muscles, eventually contributing to dysfunction that affects bladder control. Fiber decreases the likelihood of feeling constipated. • Perform Kegel exercises. These ex-
ercises work the pelvic floor muscles to strengthen them, which can prevent urine from leaking in various situations. • Quit smoking. Cigarette smokers have a two to three times higher risk of bladder cancer than nonsmokers, states the health guide Everyday Health. Quitting now can help the bladder. By making certain lifestyle changes. people can improve their bladder function and health.

Modern Dentistry by Dr. J. Nicholas Porcello
THE FLAP OVER WISDOM TEETH When the third molars (“wisdom teeth”) do not have sufficient room to erupt through the gums, a partial eruption can lead to inflammation and infection of the soft tissue around the tooth. This inflammatory condition, known as “pericoronitis,” commonly occurs among young adults in their 20s, with about 81 percent of those affected being between 20 and 29 years old. The infection often occurs as a result of the development of a gum flap over the partially erupted tooth, which traps food and allows a buildup of bacteria that cause infection. Chronic symptoms include dull pain, a bad taste in the mouth, and swollen gums, while acute symptoms range from severe pain and pus discharge to swollen lymph nodes. Whether dealing with wisdom teeth, restorations, cosmetic dentistry, or dental implants, a good experience with dentistry is based on two things— choosing the right dentist whom you trust and who is up to date on the latest in dentistry, and taking the necessary steps to keep dental problems at bay through self-care at home between professional visits. At VALLEY VIEW DENTAL, we work with you to maximize your oral health. Our office is located at 3065 Buffalo Rd., Allegany; please call 716.372.8400 if you’d like an appointment for a Painless, Professional, Pleasant dental experience.
P.S. Pericoronitis can be averted with regular dental checkups.

Me, myself and eye: 5 common behaviors that could be hurting your eyes (BPT) – If you’re like many Americans, you’re diligent about maintaining your health by eating right, exercising and regularly seeing your doctor. But even the most health-conscious people are often unaware of daily behaviors in their lives that could be straining or even damaging their eyes. That’s surprising, given that 21 percent of Americans believe severe vision loss would negatively impact the quality of their lives. The good news? Taking steps to protect your eyes isn’t difficult. Guarding yourself against these potentially damaging behav-
iors should be part of your regular health routine. • Not wearing sunglasses. Sun wear does more than just block glare. The same harmful rays that can burn your skin can also damage your eyes over time, sometimes leading to vision-reducing issues such as cataracts and macular degeneration. As a precaution, ophthalmologists recommend wearing sunglasses anytime you’re outside, seeking lenses that block out at least 99 percent of UVA and UVC rays.

• Failing to visit your eye doctor annually. Seeing an eye doctor once a year to check on any prescription changes is important, but a visit can also help detect other serious eye issues. Alarmingly, one survey found 64 percent of Americans notice signs of trouble such as red, watery eyes, light flashes, blurry or double vision, difficulty seeing at night or difficulty reading up close, yet only 13 percent follow up with eye exams. Fortunately, taking that step is easier when you’re covered by solid eye care insurance with a provider such as VSP Individual Vision Plans, which could save you literally hundreds of dollars a year in eye exams, glasses and contacts. • Staring at your smartphone. If your eyes are often sore or tired at the end of the day, you may be spending too much uninterrupted time zeroing in on your phone. To avoid that strain and even worse symptoms such as blurred vision, dry eyes, dizziness or nausea, enlarge your font, always keep your phone at least 16 inches away from your face and take screen breaks every 20 minutes. • Overusing eye drops.
Some people form a dependency on the over-the-counter whitening drops that reduce redness by temporarily restricting blood flow to the eye’s blood vessels. Repeat users often notice that their eyes “rebound” and get red again as oxygen returns to those deprived capillaries, creating a vicious cycle. As a rule, non-prescription eye drops should not be a long-term solution to any eye issue. • Using old or borrowed eye makeup. You should replace your makeup every three months to keep from introducing new and potentially harmful bacteria into your eye area. Avoid other people’s makeup for the same reason. Eye care experts also warn against applying eyeliner to your inner eyelids, which can be especially vulnerable to infection. Getting in the habit of caring for your eyes need not be time consuming, and it doesn’t have to be expensive if you think ahead by enrolling in a vision plan with VSPDirect.com, the provider with the largest network of independent doctors nationwide. Learn about the causes of adult hearing loss Hearing loss is quite common and can impact people’s lives in profound ways. Although there are some treatments that can improve one’s ability to hear and communicate, many people are interested in learning about the ways they may be able to prevent hearing loss in the first place. Medical experts from the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association advise that hearing loss can be caused by different factors. Learning about these causes can help individuals make smart decisions at a young age to prevent future hearing loss when possible. In certain circumstances, hearing loss may be unavoidable. In such instances, audiologists, or doctors specializing in hearing, can help. Conductive hearing loss Conductive hearing loss refers to problems with the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear and its bones, states the Hearing Loss Association of America. Some of the causes of conductive hearing loss include: • Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear in which fluid accumulation can interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles. • Impacted earwax also can cause hearing problems.
• Fluid in the middle ear may obstruct hearing. • Otosclerosis, which is a middle ear disease, can make it difficult for the tiny bones in the middle ear to move. Surgery can correct the problem. • Malformation of the outer ear, ear canal or middle ear structure can impact hearing as well. Sensorineural hearing loss Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, occurs due to problems of the inner ear. It is often referred to as nerve-related hearing loss. • Aging is a common cause of hearing loss that may not be reversible. Age-related hearing loss is called presbycusis and is marked by muffled or
unclear speech. Treatment with assistive hearing devices can help improve hearing. • Trauma to the ear or head may impact hearing. Wearing protective gear during sports or other activities can protect against neurological damage that may cause hearing loss. • Damage to the inner ear can result from prolonged exposure to loud noises, states the Mayo Clinic. These noises cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain. When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren’t transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs. Using hearing protection
and turning down the volume can help. • Ménière’s disease is an inner ear problem of unknown origins. It usually starts in people between the ages of 30 and 50. Dizziness and ringing of the ear are common, and hearing loss comes and goes. Some loss can become permanent. • Viruses and diseases as well as family history also may play a role in SNHL. In some instances, hearing loss may be the result of a combination of factors. Anyone finding their hearing has become less acute should visit with an audiologist. One resource to visit is www. asha.org/profind. The doctor can then prescribe a treatment plan to help improve hearing.

Safe and effective:
Choose physical therapy for your back pain (BPT) – If you’re living with low back pain (LBP), you’re not alone. The condition is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. Studies show 80 percent of American adults will experience LBP at some point in their lives. If LBP turns from short-term to chronic (lasting three months or longer), it can impact your overall quality of life. Modern society craves quick-fix solutions to even complex problems, but this mindset can be particularly counterproductive when it comes to LBP. Studies show that LBP is often overtreated, particularly when it comes to the use of opioids, imaging scans (such as MRIs and X-rays), and surgery. Guidelines recommend first trying exercise and other conservative approaches instead. “When it comes to low back pain, the best advice is to move,” said APTA spokesperson Colleen Louw, PT, MEd. “Most low back pain will resolve on its own and responds positively to increased movement and regular exercise.” As America seeks solutions to its ongoing opioid epidemic, patients and prescribers should be especially cautious about treating LBP with opioids.
Opioids come with a list of serious potential side effects, and every day more than 1,000 people are treated in emergency departments for opioid misuse. Meanwhile, longterm use of opioids might not be particularly helpful for LBP, which is why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released guidelines urging the use of safer alternatives, including physical therapy, for most non-cancer-related chronic pain conditions. “Given the substantial evidence gaps on opioids, uncertain benefits of long -term use and potential for serious harm, patient education and discussion before starting opioid therapy are critical so that patient preferences and values can be understood and used to inform clinical decisions,” the CDC states. Physical therapists can play a valuable role in the patient education process, including setting realistic expectations for recovery with or without opioids. Physical therapists are movement experts who optimize quality of life through prescribed exercise, hands-on care and patient education. A physical therapist will perform a thorough evalu-
ation that includes: • A review of your health history. • Questions about your specific symptoms. • A thorough examination that includes assessing the quality and quantity of your movements, and any movement behaviors that might put you at risk for delayed recovery. • Tests to identify signs or symptoms that could indicate a serious health problem, such as broken bones or cancer. • Assessment of how you use your body at work, home, during sports and at leisure. An active treatment plan from a physical therapist can help you improve your mobility while managing your pain, whereas opioids only mask the sensation of pain. Here are four reasons to choose physical therapy for your back pain: Physical therapy is a safe and effective alternative to opioids. While doctor-prescribed opioids are appropriate in some cases, choosing a safer alternative, like physical therapy, eliminates the risk of misuse and avoids
the potential negative side effects. Your physical therapist will set realistic expectations for recovery, with or without opioids. Physical therapists help you help yourself. Physical therapists empower you to be an active participant in your own treatment. Depending on the severity of your pain, your therapist may work collaboratively with other health professionals to ensure a comprehensive course of treatment. Physical therapy is cost effective. A recent study shows patients with LBP who consult physical therapists early in their treatment processes incur lower out-of-pocket medical costs, with less probability of accruing expenses associated with opioid prescriptions, advanced imaging services or emergency room visits. Physical therapy is accessible. You do not need a physician referral to access physical therapists’ services in the U.S. When it comes to your health, you have a choice. Choose more movement and better health - choose physical therapy. To find more information and a physical therapist in your area, visit MoveForwardPT.com.

Potential benefits of a vegan diet A nutritious diet is an integral component of a healthy lifestyle. One of the great things about eating right is there are many ways to do so. A healthy diet that works for some people might not work for others with different tastes, and it doesn’t have to. Eating right can boost immune systems and help people be more productive, and some people even tailor their healthy diets to align with their personal beliefs. One such example is veganism. Adherents to veganism do not eat or use animal products, and many do so to advocate for the ethical treatment of animals. Regardless of why people choose vegan diets, the potential health benefits of such decisions are myriad. • Shed excess weight: Vegan diets may help people shed excess weight. A 2015 study
published in the journal Nutrition found that vegan diets may result in greater weight loss than more modest recommendations. The vegan diets used in the study did not require participants to limit their caloric intake, though many might have simply by the nature of the vegan diet, which is packed with satisfying foods full of nutrients such as fiber that can help people feel full and maintain that feeling of fullness for long periods of time. • Improve kidney function: Studies have indicated that people with diabetes who replace the meat in their diets with plant protein may reduce their risk for poor kidney function. One such study, published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition,
concluded that, while more studies are necessary, substituting soy protein for animal proteins usually decreases hyperfiltration in diabetic subjects and may reduce albumin excretion as well. • Protect against certain cancers: The World Health Organization says that roughly onethird of all instances of cancer across the globe can be prevented if people make the right lifestyle choices. That includes their choice in diets. Due to the nature of vegan diets, vegans tend to consume considerable amounts of fruits and vegetables. That’s good news, as an analysis of data from the Health Survey for
England found that eating seven or more portions of fresh fruits and vegetables every day can reduce a person’s risk of dying from cancer by as much as 15 percent. • Reduce risk for heart disease: Fruits, vegetables and fiber also have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease. A study from researchers in Japan found that intakes of plant-based foods, particularly fruits, were associated with reduced mortality from cardiovascular disease. Vegan diets may necessitate an adjustment period when starting out. But over time, the benefits of such diets are numerous.
